be of interest. I am sure that most of you have seen this in either
English or Hebrew (or both). It is hard cover, 110 pages with photographs
and copies of the original text as well as a great deal of historical
detail and information.

Published by Yad Vashem, 2004. $35.00 (English and Hebrew versions are

Re: [ha-Safran]: GOOGLE story in the Jerusalem Post

2004-04-19 Thread malka9
Dr. Weinshank,

I agree with you, and thank you for your efforts in making a very strong
case in this matter. Have you sent a copy of your statement to Sen. Shumer
(sp?) of New York, who has been so agitated about this? I would ask that
you please do so. We (that is, those agitating to change the Google
listings) are on the wrong path here, as you explain so fully, and only bad
things can come of it. It's hard for me to understand how librarians, of
all people, don't see what they are doing here.

Great point! Do we have ALA people to work on this? It would be interesting
to see whether the trash-Israel ALA would do this.

[ha-Safran]: Sheldon Oberman, zl

2004-04-19 Thread Cheryl Banks
Friends:

I don't know if I missed this announcement through HaSafran, but I was just
sent an article from the Winnipeg Free Press that notes the passing
of Sheldon Oberman, author of Jewish children's books, and winner of the
Sydney Taylor Book Award in 1994 for The Always Prayer Shawl. The article
reads:

Tributes began flowing in yesterday followng the death of one of the
city's most popular and creative spirits. Sheldon Oberman, best known as
an award-winning author of children's books, lost his battle with . .
.cancer late Friday night [March 26]. . .He was 54.

He published a dozen books, wrote film, TV and radio scripts, directed
short films, performed as an actor and even created the questions for a
board game. But it was in the traditional art of oral storytelling where
Oberman got his start and where his heart always lay.

There are people who tell stories and then there are storytellers, said
his friend and colleage, Jamie Oliverio. They create stories as they walk
through life and breathe. THose people are my teachers and my heroes. Obie
was, is, and always will be one of those.

Among Oberman's successful children's books are The Always Prayer Shawl,
The Wisdom Bird, and the Shaman's Nephew . .

May his memory be for a blessing.

Cheryl Banks

[ha-Safran]: Out of Print Titles

2004-04-19 Thread Linda Silver
Dear Anna,

In response to your HaSafran posting: there are so many children s
books of Jewish content that are out of print, that I think your request
for titles needs an organizing principle. I would suggest using the Sydney
Taylor Body-of-Work awards as the first priority and individual STBA
winners as the second.

For example, Isaac Bashevis Singer won the Body-of-Work award in 1971. His
OP titles include:

A Day of Pleasure and Other Stories for Children

Why Noah Chose the Dove

When Shlemiel Went to Warsaw and Other Stories

The Golem

The Fearsome Inn

The Wicked City

Mazel and Shlimazel: Or the Milk of the Lioness

The Topsy Turvy Emperor of China

Alone in the Wild Forest

The Fools of Chelm and Their History

Joseph and Koza: Or the Sacrifice to the Vistula

Naftali, the Storyteller and His Horse, Sus

The next Sydney Taylor Body of Work winner was Marilyn Hirsh. Her OP
titles include:

Where Is Yonkele?

The Rabbi and the Twenty Nine Witches

Captain Jiri and Rabbi Jacob

Deborah the Dybbuk

The Tower of Babel

I Love Hanukkah

Hannibal and His Thirty Seven Elephants

I Love Passover

Could Anything Be Worse?

Potatoes Pancakes All Around

The Hanukkah Story

K tonton In the Circus

Ben Goes Into Business

The House On the Roof

Joseph Who Loved the Sabbath

One Little Goat

These long lists of O.P. titles by two of the finest authors of
Jewish children s books exemplify the extent of the problem and the
difficulties in preparing a randomly generated list of such titles. If you
only followed the organizing principle that I suggest (above), the list
would still run to hundreds of titles.

[ha-Safran]: Need some help

2004-04-19 Thread WENDYSCARR
I am a part-time librarian at a Reform congregation. I meet with the
K,1,2, 3rd graders once a month and read them a story and they have the
opportunity to take out a book.

This past year we changed the program and had a theme for the year. This
past year (2003-2004) our theme has been Israel. We are having a mesibah
(library party) for these grades as a culminating event. There will be
games candy. We are giving each child a pinwheel with Jewish stars on
them. We would like to attach a sign that has a catchy phrase such
as: Read Jewish books, Jewish books are fun to read.

Can anyone suggest a catchy phrase we might use?

Next question:

Next years theme is Isaac Bashevis Singer. I will be reading his stories
to the students and discussing his life. I would like to have the 2nd
3rd grade students work cooperatively to make a bulletin board/mural around
his stories. It would be a work in progress. Does anyone have any
suggestions about how I might go about doing this?

Thank you for your help. Last year when I needed Israeli book ideas, I
received a lot of help. Thank you.

[ha-Safran]: JCLLA annual nationwide summer reading club

2004-04-19 Thread abigail yasgur
Friends and Colleagues:
Read, be read to, or read to..
Once again the Jewish Community Library of Los Angeles lovingly invites all
communities in North America and
B E Y O N D to have their congregations, classes, families, camps, etc.
participate in the annual nationwide summer reading club.
The club is specifically designed for the Early Childhood set (beginning
3-4 years old) through 11-12 yr. olds!
Read 6 appropriate level Jewish themed books over the summer, send in the
list and receive a certificate and prize.
If a teacher or librarian reads to a class of 20 kids..it counts for every
kid. If a sibling reads to a sibling, it counts for both of the kids. It's
a piece of cake to do.

All hints, information and the form to complete will be located on the
JCLLA web site:

All the best.
