[ha-Safran]: Historical Fiction recommendations
In response to George Lederer, here is another work of historical fiction. Conway, Sara. Murder on Good Friday. Nashville, TN: Cumberland House, 2001. The murder of a Christian boy in 1220 brings accusations against a northern English town's few Jews. Miracles convince the townspeople that the boy is a saint, while the bailiff searches for evidence that will lead to the killer and save the Jews. The mystery is engaging, and the setting and relationships between the characters are well portrayed. Grades 9 and up.. [ha-Safran]: Southern California wildfire
Friends, Here is a recent report from Jewish agencies in Southern California about the impact of the fires on everyday life. Dr. Yaffa Weisman Library Director The Frances-Henry Library Hebrew Union College-JIR 3077 University Ave. Los Angeles, California 90007 www.huc.edu/libraries/losangeles 213.7652170 -Original Message- From: Windmueller, Steven Sent: Wednesday, October 24, 2007 9:07 AM To: LA Staff - All (no students); LA Students - Fall 2007 Subject: Southern California wildfire Some of you have inquired about how the Jewish community in Southern California is responding to the wildfires. In conversations with our local Jewish Federation and our Jewish Family Service as well as the JCPA (Jewish Council for Public Affairs), I have learned the following: Primary volunteer and service work is being handled by the American Red Cross, although our JFS agency is currently providing social workers to deal with the issues of emotional stress and trauma among victims. Other resources will be required at a later point. There will no doubt be some special emergency campaigns established to assist those made homeless by the fires. The situation is particularly serious in North San Diego County where volunteers and resources are particularly important at this time. I am enclosing below a report prepared yesterday and provided to us by the JCRC Director of the San Diego Jewish Federation that will give you some greater insights into the dimensions of this difficult situation. Hi, everyone. In a nutshell, a short time ago the sheriff's department reported 346,000 homes evacuated and they expect that number to increase before the Santa Ana winds subside later in the week. Virtually every synagogue and agency is affected. In fact, I would dare to say that everyone in this city knows someone who was evacuated or were themselves directly impacted. From my house I could see the fire line about 20 miles in the distance (I was evacuated in the 2003 fires). I sent my kids to a friend's for the day because I didn't want them home by themselves (they're 14 and 16) watching the fire in the distance or on the news, scaring themselves crazy. Some synagogues were evacuated. Our community's Jewish nursing home evacuated all of the residents at their assisted living facility; most of the residents of their SNF in a different part of the County were also evacuated. As of right now I have not heard reports of any Jewish institutions sustaining serious damage (other than smoke). All schools in San Diego County - public and private, elementary through college - are closed today. The Wild Animal Park and Sea World are also closed. Many businesses are closed. Most major freeways are open for passage except when the fire is too close for safety. The roads need to be kept as open as possible for evacuation purposes. They're asking people to minimize cell phone usage. Our power went down for a few minutes yesterday (a word from G-d, perhaps?). Power has gone down to thousands of customers throughout the area. Qualcomm (The San Diego Chargers stadium) has become a major staging ground and shelter. Today's temperature will be HOT (about 95 near my house) with very low humidity and high winds (that's part of the Santa Ana weather condition). If people want to do something please direct them to the United Jewish Federation Website at www.jewishinsandiego.org. Unfortunately we've had experience with this before. We're taking donations which will be used for short term cash relief for those in need. We're working very closely with the Jewish Community Foundation and Jewish Family Service (they'll provide the direct services). We're keeping track of our rabbis and other agencies. Everyone has been terrific. . --Tina Tina Friedman Director, Community Relations United Jewish Federation of San Diego County 4950 Murphy Canyon Road San Diego CA 92123 telephone 858-571-3444 fax 858-571-0701 e-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] Visit our Website at www.jewishinsandiego.org Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) === Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: Hasafran @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu SUBscribing, SIGNOFF commands send to: Listproc @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Questions, problems, complaints, compliments;-) send to: galron.1 @ osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html History: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/history.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org

HUC-LA is located near downtown Los Angeles. Since we are almost surrounded by fires (to the west, north-west, north-east, east and south-east - most 30-60 miles away) our air is pretty smokey and sooty. One staff member did have to evacuate her home, but so far is doing well. Besides worrying about friends and family who are living closer to the fire-regions, we're doing well. Sheryl Sheryl F. [ha-Safran]: Yiddish Dance Symposium at NYU December 9
Yiddish Dance Symposium at NYU December 9 The Center for Traditional Music and Dance and New York University's Department of Performance Studies present: The Yiddish Dance Research Symposium Defining Yiddish Dance: Secular, Sacred, Borrowed and Transformed Sunday, December 9th - 9:30AM - 5:30PM Edgar M. Admission: $10 general public, $5 students/seniors Scholars wishing to register should RSVP to Center for Traditional Music and Dance's Pete Rushefsky, 212-571-1555 ext. 36, [EMAIL PROTECTED] A special session focused on strategies for revitalizing the Yiddish Dance tradition will be held on the morning of Monday, December 10th (call/email Pete Rushefsky for details). The Yiddish Dance Research Symposium is a historic first-ever gathering of leading researchers, teachers and practitioners of the Yiddish (Ashkenazic) Dance tradition along with scholars specializing in dance ethnography, Jewish culture and other Central and East European cultures. The goals of the Yiddish Dance Research Symposium are for researchers to share fieldwork, discuss research into the dance tradition and its place within Yiddish culture, and identify goals/strategies for future fieldwork and dissemination of educational resources. The Symposium co-Chairs are Michael Alpert and Walter Zev Feldman, Ph.D. Professor Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett of New York University's Department of Performance Studies is the Symposium's host and will moderate. Sessions: Sunday, December 9 - 9:30AM - 5:30PM 1) Welcome from the co-Chairs and Moderator 2) Defining Yiddish Dance - Contexts, Genres, Gestures 3) Analysis of Film and Video Documents 4) Connection of Dance and Music 5) The Sher and Contra-Dance 6) Interaction with Co-territorial Dance 7) European Hasidic Dance Concluding Thoughts Monday December 10th: Special Session (place/time to be announced) 1) Strategies for Field Research, Documentation and Dissemination 2) Training Dance Leaders Encouraging Participation For hundreds of years, Jews were part of a diverse tapestry of ethnic communities in Eastern and Central Europe. Dance, particularly during wedding festivities, was an important means of cultural expression and community cohesion for Jews living in cities and shtetlekh (villages) alike. Much of the dance repertoire of East European Jews was of a multi- cultural nature. Nevertheless, Jewish dance also featured a unique vocabulary of gestures and genres. A variety of factors caused most traditional Yiddish dance and its associated klezmer repertoire to fall almost completely out of practice by the 1960s. Participants at the typical American-Jewish celebration of today may move in a circle to the rhythm of the music but are at a loss as to the dance forms, steps and stylistic gestures of the tradition. While remnants of a limited number of dance forms and gestures are retained in Hasidic communities, today there are but a few elderly immigrant and second-generation Jews left who still perform, or can even recall traditional dance from either Europe or America. Despite significant success in the revival of traditional Jewish klezmer music over the past thirty years, the associated Yiddish Dance tradition has received less attention and is at alarming risk of being almost completely forgotten. It is only thanks to the work of a handful of dedicated individuals (mostly operating without institutional support) that any fieldwork and documentation of Yiddish Dance has been done over the past thirty years. Special thanks to Erik Bendix and Jill Gellerman for their work in helping to conceptualize the conference. Thanks also to Renata Celichowska, Adrienne Cooper, Lee Ellen Friedland, Jill Gellerman, Itzik Gottesman, Cindy Greenberg, Judith Brin Ingber, Haim Kaufman, Janet Leuchter, Hankus Netsky, Ethel Raim, Karen Sander, Jake Shulman- Ment, Fanchon Shur, Mark Slobin, Steve Weintraub, Adam Whiteman and Helen Winkler. Other Upcoming Yiddish Dance Events: Thursday November 1st and Thursday December 6th from 7PM - 10PM Tantshoyz (Yiddish Dance House) - Workshop/Dance Party at the JCC in Manhattan (76th and Amsterdam). Zev Feldman leads the dancing to live klezmer music. Dancers of all abilities welcome. $10/$8 for JCC and Workmen's Circle members. Support for the Yiddish Dance Project was provided to the Center for Traditional Music Dance by the Forward Association, the National Endowment for the Arts Heritage and Preservation, the New York State Council on the Arts Folk Arts Program, a State agency, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. Fred, Thanks for your concern about our Southern California members being affected by the fires. So far, I haven't heard of any problems. We in the central Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley have not been affected - fortunately! The worst hit have been all around us. We see the smoke but the high winds that have caused havoc in the fire areas have kept our skies relatively clear. I do know some personally who have been evacuated in outlying areas - but haven't yet heard of any libraries affected! As Suzi Dubin wrote, the San Diego area and others are still very much a concern. This morning's news said the fires are 80% contained, but then there are crazed arsonists who seem to want to join in the melee - so new fires are springing up here and there. We keep hoping that all will be well. Barbara Barbara Y.
