[ha-Safran]: The Pogroms of E. Europe 1903-1906

2009-12-14 Thread Lee Jaffe
I'm forwarding this item I received through another list ... -- Lee
Jaffe, UC Santa Cruz

The Museum of Family History would like to announce the presence on its
site of an important report and a table of pogroms committed between
1903 and 1906.

First, you will be able to read the introduction and commentary to all
of this as published by the American Jewish Committee in their American
Jewish Year Book, Volume 8 (1906-1907).

Secondly, you will be able to peruse a table of more than two hundred
and fifty towns and cities in Europe where pogroms occurred. Within this
table is a listing of the damage caused in these locations (when
available), as well as some general remarks made about each pogrom. You
will also find for each pogrom event listed, the date of occurrence, the
name of the town or city, the gubernia, the overall population of the
location and the Jewish population, though numbers are not given for
every town or city. There is also a supplemental table of pogroms in
other locations in November 1905 not included in this larger table.

To make your town search easier, there is also included a table that
lists alphabetically all the locations with a reference made with each
to the entry number in the large table. There is also a table that lists
the gubernias in which pogroms occurred, and their overall and Jewish
populations.

Most interestingly, though thoroughly depressing, is the Report of the
Duma Commission of the Bialystok Massacre that occurred in June 1906. A
goodly report is presented to you here as it reviews in detail many
incidents that occurred during the pogrom, especially to the Jewish
population. Those of you who might have had families that lived in
Bialystok may wish to read the report thoroughly to see if any family
names are mentioned. For those of you who have an interest in a
particular town, this report and its included tables are for you.

Lastly, the debates that occurred in the Duma as the report was being
presented is interesting to read too. You can also read of the
resolutions proposed and passed within the U. S. Congress from 1905-1906.

It should be mentioned that all this is being presented to you at the
Museum courtesy of the American Jewish Committee Archives.

All of the aforementioned information can be found at
www.museumoffamilyhistory.com/ajc-yb-v08-pogroms.htm

Have you looked at chinuch.org? If you sign in and search for
Secular Book List you will find some good information:

Description:

Newly updated as of September 2009! List of over 2000 secular children's and

young adult books with notations for acceptable, unacceptable and questionable.

There are extensive comments on most books as well as suggested grade

levels. There are three versions of the list: complete list of all books with

comments, approved list with comments and approved list without comments.

There is also a Classics Analysis List. Cover letter also includes
the criteria for evaluation.

RE: [ha-Safran]: Yeshiva-Appropriate YA fiction

2009-12-14 Thread Yeshivah Secondary Library
Hi Aviva
I am the librarian (retiring tomorrow!) at a Chabad boys' school in
Melbourne, Australia. I just put together a rough document for
evaluating resources which I am attaching for you. As it is the end
of the school year here, we are busy winding down, but I can email
you some books that are on our booklists if that would be helpful to
you. I have been given quite a bit of autonomy in choosing fiction,
not sure whether your criteria would be stricter than ours.
Regards,
Michelle Feiglin

I'm working with a small synagogue to automate their library on a
very small budget. I'm thinking of recommending LibraryWorld.com.
They need a hosted solution, and it seems the simplest and most
affordable ($395 per year subscription).
Does anyone have experience good or bad with LibraryWorld.com (They
used to be CASPR).? I searched the HaSafran archive and found a
discussion or two a few years back in which folks reported positively
on Surpass CL, which is a nice sysem, but more expensive.
Please contact me off list at ckinb...@gmail.com specifically about

[ha-Safran]: Small library

2009-12-14 Thread Marlene Schiffman
I received this query from a friend who is working at a Chabad House.
She writes:

We have a new library, not huge, but I'd like to organize
it. Someone at the shul is a librarian at a community college and
she suggested organizing it by subject, i.e. a shelf called
History, etc., similar to what they have in a bookstore. I was
wondering if there is a simple system for organizing Jewish
books. Can you point me to a website that would help me? Thanks so much,

She doesn't specify if she wants to computerize it or have some
system for keeping track of borrowers. Nevertheless, can anyone be of
help to her? Thanks.

[ha-Safran]: My Hebrew Songbook - Chanukah Songs

2009-12-14 Thread Jacob Richman
Hi Everyone!

Just in time for Chanukah, My Hebrew Songbook is back and
now has its own domain and website.
http://www.my-hebrew-songbook.com

Enter the songbook and choose the category Chanukah.
You can view any song online or create printed song sheets
with several songs together for a sing along. All Hebrew is
graphic so you do not need Hebrew support to view or print
the songs. All songs include Hebrew nikud (vowels).

You will find the popular Chanukah songs here (Sivivon, Maoz Tzur,
Al Hanisim, Yemay Hanukah, etc...) but also songs that you may
have forgotten from many years ago.

Feedback is welcome.

In addition to the Chanukah songs, I updated the following pages:

144 Cool Chanukah Videos on YouTube:
http://www.jr.co.il/videos/chanukah-videos.htm

21 Chanukah Humor Files
http://www.jr.co.il/humor/chanuka.htm

145 Chanukah Resource Sites
http://www.jr.co.il/hotsites/j-hdaych.htm

Enjoy!

Happy Chanukah!
Jacob

[ha-Safran]: help finding a video

2009-12-14 Thread Chaya Wiesman
Dear Safranim,

A teacher did a search on Wikipedia and came up with a description of
the following video : .In 1974 for The Marranos of Portugal the
Israel Broadcasting Authority (IBA) sent reporter Ron Ben Yishai to
carry out interviews with families about their religious practice.
After being asked to prove he knew Hebrew before they would talk he
found people still reluctant to talk openly but did eventually gain a
remarkable insight into their version of Jewish customs, prayers and
songs The film was commended at the 1976 Jerusalem Jewish Film and TV Festival.

I have exhausted all my resources in searching for this film, which
he would like to use for a class. If anyone knows where to get a
hold of it, please advise. We would prefer to borrow especially
since he has not seen it and does not know if it would be suitable
for his purposes.

Thank you in advance. Please reply off the list ch...@ramaz.org.

[ha-Safran]: New Holocaust Rfugee Memoir: Switzerland

2009-12-14 Thread Frieda Forman
 NEW HOLOCAUST REFUGEE MEMOIR: SWITZERLAND

 Frieda Johles Forman
*Jewish Refugees in Switzerland during the Holocaust:
A Memoir of Childhood and History*
 U.K., Vallentine Mitchell, 2009

This is the first English-language memoir of the Jewish
refugee experience in wartime Switzerland focusing on children's
experience and daily life in refugee camps. The author's own memories
of a refugee childhood are complemented by historical research
from the archives of the Swiss government and of Jewish
organizations, revealing a treasure trove of official documents,
refugee correspondence, photographs and children's art created in the
camps. Original French, German and Yiddish documents are translated
into English for the firsttime to reveal the heated public
debates about Switzerland's refugee policy and its treatment of
Jewish refugees.

Dear safranim,

A public librarian colleague of mine sent me the question,
below. I'd appreciate your suggestions.

Thanks,

Ann

FROM A PUBLIC LIBRARIAN IN THE BOSTON AREA:

We've been wanting to add an Israeli magazine, preferably in Hebrew
and a monthly. A patron recommended that we could subscribe to
Hamodia http://www.hamodia.com/ Do you have any suggestions for a
public library? Our readers regularly read our English titles, but
there is also a large Israeli community using our library.

[ha-Safran]: Library and Information Services Delegation to Israel

2009-12-14 Thread Sherry Wasserman
Has anyone else received an invitation to participate in a trip to
Israel as a delegate to the Library and Information Services
Delegation to Israel? I have received two of them, one from Camila
A. Alire who I believe is the current President of ALA and a follow
up one from People to People International which is running the
trip. This trip is supposed to happen August 20-28, 2010. It is a
one week trip, and it says it will cost approx. $6000.00. The cost of
participation for professional librarians may be tax deductable and
you can invite someone to travel with you who does not have to be a librarian.

The goal of this delegation is to return to the U.S. with a much
better understanding of international librarianship by listening to
and learning from our Israeli counterparts. Additionally, we will
have a lot of expertise to share with them that might be helpful in
addressing their challenges. Possible collaboration/partnerships
with our Israeli counterparts is another goal (from the letter for Dr. Alire)

The preliminary mission statement and direction for the delegation
have been defined initially by both Dr. Alire and our planning team
in Israel. The initial topics of discussion are listed below. These
will be further refined as the delegation is formed to incorporate
delegates' specialized areas of interest and expertise.

n The role of information technology in Israeli libraries and
the extent to which IT is implemented

n What are some of the other innovations in Israeli libraries

n From the opposite point of view, what are some of the major
challenges the Israeli libraries are experiencing.

n What are some major challenges for Israeli library directors
and administrators

n What is the extent of professional development for Israeli
librarians (from the follow up letter)

One seems to need to be invited to participate in this (I have an
invitation code number). I have no idea why I was selected to
receive it. I am not even sure it is legitimate. IF IT IS FOR REAL,
then it seems to me that someone from AJL should be involved. ALA
does not have a good track record when it comes to Israel and I would
hate for a trip like this to be hi-jacked by anti-Israel people. I
am currently retired from public library work and now volunteer in a
synagogue. This sounds more research and academic to me. I do not
feel I would be a good choice. They want a reply from me by December
29, 2009, and then, if I decline they will offer it to someone else.

So does anyone know anything about this? Has anyone in Israel heard
about this? What about the Jewish librarians group in ALA, have they
been involved? I'll be happy to email copies of the letters I have
received to anyone who wants them. There is contact information
given about this -- People to People Citizen Ambassador Program at
877-787-2000. emaili...@peopletopeople.com BUT they ask you to
reference your invitation code number. I don't know if I should be
giving that out…??? I just don't know if this is REAL or not.

I look forward to hearing if others have also been invited to be a
delegate to this.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Looking for a book...

2009-12-14 Thread rebsn...@juno.com
fyi: both www.bookfinder.com and www.addall.com show a copy for $45
including shipping is available from amazon.ca. It ships from California.

These sites search multiple used book sites and rank them by price
(including shipping). There are also several copies of the ALA
Filing Rules available from about $6 including shipping.

These are my favorite sites for bargains and to know that I'm getting
a good price on used books.
