RE: [ha-Safran]: Early Jewish children's books
Dear Fred, Nice to hear your voice. Your e-mail got me thinking. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have one place where early Jewish children's books could be housed? That way, anyone doing research in that field could go there instead of traveling about the country for bits and pieces. Here in Toronto, we have a collection of old important children's books housed at one branch of the public library. Is there something similar somewhere in the U.S? Perhaps this could be a project of the AJL, where the collection could be housed at one of our member libraries. What do you think? [ha-Safran] : My new book
Dear friends and colleagues, I hope this message finds you well. It gives me great pleasure to tell you about my new book, Dynamic Women Dancers. (I've included 3 1/2 Jewish dancers!) Here's the blurb from the publicist: ANNE DUBLIN's new book, Dynamic Women Dancers, is out from Second Story Press ($10.95, ISBN: 978-1-897187-56-2, pbk). The fourteenth in the Women's Hall of Fame series, this book for ages 9-13 profiles ten international women dancers. From classical ballet to modern, flamenco, and Bharatanatyam, these women have made a difference to the world through their involvement in dance and beyond. They include: Liz Lerman, Anna Pavlova, Pearl Primus, and Anna Sokolow. Each chapter includes photographs, quotes from the women profiled, and highlighted sidebars with facts about their lives and accomplishments. For more information, see below. You might also be interested to know that another book I wrote has been accepted for publication in 2010. The Orphan is historical fiction for young people, based on a family story my father told me many years ago. It takes place in Sosnowiec, Poland in 1937. I'm very excited about this book, for the story is close to my heart. Stay tuned May each one of you go from strength to strength. The book profiles ten women dancers from around the world. From classical ballet to modern, flamenco, and Bharatanatyam, these women have made the dance world their stage, performing and teaching all over the globe. They also share a commitment to making a difference in the world around them through their involvement in dance. A diverse selection of female dancers are profiled. They include Canadian Judith Marcuse, a modern dancer and choreographer who is currently on a cross-country tour of her environmental-themed dance-theatre work for young people, EARTH=Home. Fellow Canadian Karen Kain, perhaps this country's most well known ballerina, has used her influence to support dancers when they retire. Also included in the collection is Cuban ballerinaAlicia Alonso, who did not let partial blindness overshadow her dream of founding the Ballet Nacional de Cuba. And Liz Lerman, a modern dancer from the US who countered the rule that dance is only for the young by featuring dancers who range in age from their 20s to their 70s. Each chapter includes photographs, quotes from the women profiled, and highlighted sidebars with facts about their lives and accomplishments. [ha-Safran]: Saying good-bye/au revoir
Dear colleagues, Many of you are getting ready for what should be a wonderful Convention in Cleveland. Unfortunately, I wont be able to join you this year. Due to budget cuts at my synagogue, the position of librarian has been drastically slashed. I find the situation untenable and will therefore be taking early retirement. Its a shande that the largest Reform synagogue in Canada has seen fit to make this decision. I could rant on and on about the circumstances, but I realize that your time is valuable. Besides, from what Ive read on Hasafran, this isnt the first time that a Jewish institution has made such a short-sighted decision. Ive enjoyed working with so many of you in the AJL. Youve been mentors, colleagues, and friends. I thank you all. For a time Ill continue to co-edit the childrens and YA book reviews for the Newsletter. Meanwhile, I hope to continue my writing and speaking activities; to spend more time with family and friends; to get involved with new projects and possibilities. After June 25, feel free to contact me at home: [EMAIL PROTECTED] or (416) 633-7765. And because my boss has asked me to, Ill send a separate message to advertise the so-called librarian position. I apologize for the bitter tone in this message, but perhaps its warranted under the circumstances. Ive been asked to give input about my vision for a new library. Since I dont want to reinvent the wheel, I hope a few people out there will be able to help. If youve been involved in planning a synagogue library, please share your expertise and experience. What should I insist upon? What would be optional? What are the factors I should consider and what are the problems to avoid? [ha-Safran]: Another reading program
Dear colleagues, I was so impressed with Andrea Rapps reading programs that Id like to share what were doing, too. This year, I began a readers choice program which we call the Olive Branch Book Award. For students in grades 3 to 6, I chose 5 fiction and 5 non-fiction books, including some books by Canadian authors. The students commit to reading at least 3 books over 5 months. At the end of that period, theyll vote for their favourite. Well give a fancy certificate to the winning author, put a sticker on the winning book, AND give bookmarks and gift certificates to all the participants. Quite a few kids (and their parents) have already signed up for the OBBA. Theres a real buzz in our supplementary religious school about the program and Im thrilled about the positive comments so far. FYI, here are the titles of the books: FICTION * Ice Cream Town by Rona Arato * Emil and Karl by Yankev Glatshteyn * Broken Song by Kathryn Lasky * Confessions of a Closet Catholic by Sarah Littman * Turned Away by Carol Matas NON-FICTION * The Mystery of the Dead Sea Scrolls by Hagit Allon Lena Zehavi * The Underground Reporters by Kathy Kacer * Anne Frank by Josephine Poole * The Travels of Benjamin of Tudela by Uri Shulevitz * Albert Einstein by Frieda Wishinsky Regards, Anne Dublin, Librarian Holy Blossom Temple Toronto, Canada Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) === Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: Hasafran @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu SUBscribing, SIGNOFF commands send to: Listproc @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Questions, problems, complaints, compliments;-) send to: galron.1 @ osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html History: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/history.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org

[ha-Safran]: Another award
Dear Hasafran friends and colleagues, I can't quite believe this, but my book Bobbie Rosenfeld: The Olympian Who Could Do Everything (Second Story Press, 2004) just received another award! This one is the IODE Violet DowneyAward for the best English book for children published in Canada in 2004. I think it's wonderful because IODE stands for Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire, and this time they've given the award to a Jewish writer about a Jewish woman athlete. Neat, huh? Here's more info, in case you have nothing else to do: http://www.bookcentre.ca/awards/award_ind/awards.php?award=violet Cheers (of course), Anne Dublin, Librarian Holy Blossom Temple Toronto, Canada Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the AJL === Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: Hasafran @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu SUBscribing, SIGNOFF commands send to: Listproc @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Questions, problems, complaints, compliments;-) send to: galron.1 @ osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org

[Hasafran] Teaching Jewish Values

If you're planning to attend AJL mid-winter meetings, I can bring a CD for you if you let me know in advance. To cover costs, please send a money order or cheque in the amount of $4. (Can.) or $3.
