[ha-Safran]: Who By Fire, Who By Water - Meet the Authors
Dear friends, In less than two weeks most of us will be participating in the HIGH HOLY DAYS SERVICES, participating in their unique liturgy. BUT WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN? * What does it mean to say, in the Un'taneh Tokef poem, that Teshuvah, Tefillah and Tzedakah will remove the harshness/hardness of the decree? * Is the High Holy Day liturgy about humanity or the Jewish people? * Why is the theme of election of Israel so central to the liturgy, if the focus is the entire humanity? * What is the symbolic relationship between the shofar and Kol Nidre? Is Un'taneh Tokef also tied in there? * What exactly is being closed during N'ilah? How is it different than other concluding services? * What is different between the two new years: Rosh Hashanah and Pesach? * What are the highlights of the Machzor that drive home the High Holy Day's universalism theme? If these or other questions about the meaning of the High Holy Day liturgy are of interest to you, I have the pleasure and honor to invite you to join the two best experts on the subject in a world-premiere LIVE, INTERACTIVE TELE MASTER- CLASS on WHO BY FIRE, WHO BY WATER New Approaches to the Meaning of the High Holy Days with Rabbi LAWRENCE HOFFMAN, Ph.D. Editor of the 10-volume My People's Prayerbook, Who By Fire Who By Water: Un'taneh Tokef, and HUC Professor of Liturgy and Rabbi REUVEN KIMELMAN, Ph.D. Professor of Classical Judaica Brandeis University Full information and registration at: http://www.AskTheRabbis.com/P --- Date: Tuesday August 31, 2010 Time: 3:00 PM Eastern | 12 noon Pacific Add'l: Over 10 e-Bonuses Register: http://www.AskTheRabbis.com/P --- Yes, if the date and time don't work for you, you can listen to the entire program in RECORDED FORMAT shortly thereafter (we usually release the replays 24-48 hours after the live event). [ha-Safran]: The Seduction of Eve - One Last Time for quite a while...
Dear Friends, It's Monday night, so I'll make this quick... Our most popular no-cost tele-webinar with Brandeis Professor Reuven Kimelman has been The Seduction of Eve: Why Did She Do It? where Master Teacher Reuven Kimelman explores in depth the question whether the story of Adam and Eve (Genesis 3) eating from the Tree of Knowledge is a story of the Original Sin OR a parable of the Anatomy of Sin. I have heard from many that they could not attend our last event, due to the holiday and vacation season. So I managed to convince Professor Kimelman to do it one last time. The ONLY time slot available was tomorrow, Tuesday January 13, 2008 at 9:00 pm Eastern. Sorry for the really short notice, but that was our only option. The GOOD NEWS is that we will record it, and if you register you WILL be able to access the replay, and listen to it at your leisure. So, even if this timing doesn't work for you, simply register to gain access to the recording. Only registrants will get this access. How to register? Simply go to (there is absolutely no cost!): www.Our-Learning.com/MoralBible/TW07/Invitation.html After you read more about the event, please click on the REGISTER NOW button and you're on your way to a delightful 90 minutes of learning. [ha-Safran]: What Does the Shema Really Mean?
Dear Friends, How many times have you said or heard the Shema in your lifetime? A few? Hundreds? Thousands? Maybe even tens of thousands... But what does it really mean? Why has the Shema become the center piece of Jewish liturgy? How do the 6 words of the Shema, the 6 words of the blessing formula (Barukh Ata Adonai Eloheinu Melekh HaOlam), and the 6 words of the Rabbinic insert (Barukh Shem K'vod Malkhuto l'Olam va'ed) relate to each other? What is the literary meaning of the opening verse You shall Love is, and how it relates to the rest of the Shema's first paragraph? Does the Shema really command us to love? What does the oneness of the divine has to do with love? If the Shema has been puzzling to you or even if think you know it well, this interactive, live session with Brandeis Professor and Master Teacher Reuven Kimelman is for you. Date: Tuesday November 27, 2007 Time: 9 PM Eastern / 6 PM Pacific Where: Your telephone OR your Internet computer In 75 minutes, you will not only participate in a live class on getting a better understanding of the symphony we call the Jewish liturgy and its poetry, but also get the what, why and how to listen to, or even better recite the Shema with a greater understanding of the poetics of this inspiring text. [ha-Safran]: Prof. R. Kimelman's new Audio Coursebook is now available
Our Learning Company LLC Media Release Contact: Sergiu S. Simmel Founder President Our Learning Company LLC Phone: 617-731-3132 Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Innovative Adult Learning Courseware Publisher Announces New Audio Coursebook Featuring World Renowned Brandeis Professor Brighton, Massachusetts, 27 November 2006 - Our Learning Company LLC (OLC) - a start-up publisher of innovative Adult Learning courseware with Jewish content - announces its follow-on audio coursebook featuring Dr. Reuven Kimelman, world-renowned professor at Brandeis University. The Moral Meaning of the Bible - The What, How and Why of Biblical Ethics -- Volume I is an 8-part series featuring studio-recorded audio sessions, study text and uniquely colorful mindmapped graphic summaries. Reflecting a significant increase of interest in the Jewish heritage of highest quality teaching and lifelong learning, OLC's mission is to bring the highest quality Jewish teaching into the hands of learners, Jews and non-Jews, in a convenient, portable, and flexible format. Learning from the enormously rich Jewish tradition should not be limited to the classroom experience that may not fit either the location or the schedule of today's busy adults, says Sergiu S. Simmel, OLC's Founder and President. Having personally benefited from the gift of some of the best teachers world-wide, I set out to solve a simple question: How can we make this superb teaching available to the widest possible Jewish audience? Following the ground breaking audio coursebook on The Hidden Poetry of the Jewish Prayerbook - The What, How and Why of the Jewish Prayerbook, this new title is geared to learners whose experience in learning from Jewish sources ranges from none to comprehensive. The course examines well known Biblical episodes, such as Adam and Eve's eating from the Tree of Knowledge, the failure at the Tower of Babel, Moses' argument with God on Mount Sinai to save the people of Israel in spite of the golden calf episode, or Abraham's binding and near sacrifice of Isaac. The first volume focuses on eight such narratives. In each session, we explore its historical background, highlight its literary artistry, and uncover the ideological motivations of the text by asking three questions: what is said, how is said, and why is said. In doing so, we show how historical issues, literary considerations, and ideological factors converge to illuminate the full meaning of the Biblical text, writes Dr. Kimelman in the Introduction to the course. The package combines a professionally recorded audio track with substantial visual support and reference materials, suitable for both individual and group learning. The audio part is organized in short sessions under 30 minutes each, designed for listening in both informal (such as during commutes, trips or exercise routines) and formal (such as individual or group learning) settings. Each session includes opportunities for discussion or introspection, depending on how one uses the resource. The study text is based on the NJPS translation, and is laid out as stage scripts to make it more readable and to facilitate greater involvement through role playing. Each session is summarized by a multi-colored mindmap, a unique technology for knowledge representation, gaining widespread use in many educational and business applications. The printed and audio materials are bound by an elegant hard cover into an audio coursebook, suitable for gifting and active study. In reference to OLC's first title with Professor Reuven Kimelman, Rabbi Mark Bisman of Scottsdale, Arizona wrote: Reuven Kimelman's course on the hidden Poetry of the Siddur is superb. Not only have I learned from it, but a lay leader whom I gifted a copy reported that [it] changed the way he looks at a prayer book. Thanks for your pioneering efforts. I find [it] very clear, well organized, and easy to listen to. Often I have to go back and repeat sections because they are so densely packed with material,. remarks Rabbi Michelle Missagieh of Los Angeles, California. Barry Shrage, President of the Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Boston, and a pioneer in adult Jewish learning, notes that After a decade of growth, Boston's revolution in adult Jewish learning has helped prepare the ground for yet another high quality resource for Jewish learners everywhere. Professor Reuven Kimelman's recent audio coursebook gives learners and teachers alike a uniquely new modality for study and understanding. OLC distributes its audio courses through a number of channels, including Jewish organizations fostering adult Jewish learning, congregations, retail outlets as well as directly to Jewish learners worldwide. Its recently launched B'al Peh Program through several such organizations, such as the Synagogue Council of Massachusetts and the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School, is designed

LEARN ALL THINGS JEWISH IN 10 CDS by Ed Symkus, Newton TAB
NEWTON TAB Newton, Massachusetts LEARN ALL THINGS JEWISH IN 10 CDS By Ed Symkus/ Senior Staff Writer Wednesday, November 16, 2005 When Brookline resident and management consultant Sergiu Simmel enrolled in a series of four lectures on the Jewish prayer book - the Siddur - about a year ago, it was to gain some personal knowledge on the subject. But he was so knocked out by the presentation by Brandeis professor and Brookline resident Reuven Kimelman, he later approached the teacher with the idea of spreading his word beyond the classroom. The result is The Hidden Poetry of the Jewish Prayerbook: The What, How and Why of Jewish Liturgy, a 10-CD audio course, with accompanying book and graphics, that's having a release party on Nov. 17 at Temple Emanuel in Newton. The multimedia course is also the first publication from Simmel's new venture Our Learning Company. Presented by the Synagogue Council of Massachusetts and Temple Emanuel, the event will feature Kimelman giving a talk on God Loves You: Jewish or Christian? followed by a QA session, some dessert and a book signing. Of that night's lecture, Kimelman, who has been teaching Jewish studies at Brandeis for almost three decades, asks, What does it mean to say God loves you? What are the implications of it religiously? And what is the difference between Judaism and Christianity in making that claim? And which claim has more cogency behind it? The answers to his questions are forthcoming. There are many more questions and answers to be found in the audio book being celebrated that night. This is about learning about Jewish culture, Jewish philosophy, Jewish history, Jewish religion, explains Simmel. Essentially, all aspects that, in a word, are called Jewish. I started with this as a first title because it's focusing on the one book that is most read by most Jews - not the Bible, but the prayer book. Every time you go to a synagogue, that's the book you will be reading. Professor Kimelman once said to me that if he was forced to teach a course on Judaism in general, and he was asked to use only one single book, it would be the Siddur, he adds. Over the course of history, it has basically accumulated a kind of overview of the entire Jewish philosophical and religious way of looking at the world. But most people, even those who are apt at praying and participating in a regular Jewish service - including myself - don't have a clear idea of what these texts really mean: why they are there, who put them there, why they're structured this way. And that's what Professor Kimelman is doing in this course. The course consists of 10 CDs, each with a concise lecture on a specific prayer found in the book. It's accompanied by written text as well as a graphic component known as mind-maps, which are based on a teaching method developed in England in the 1960s. Kimelman explains how the course works. It's an aural book, but it actually does three things. It first presents the liturgy, with an English translation and transliteration, he says of the printed part. On the audio, each lecture is 28 to 32 minutes. It introduces the liturgy, the specific prayer. It opens with questions which are to be answered in the lecture, then does a verse-by-verse analysis. Then all the material is drawn together in a conclusion. The prayers involved are ones that are found in Reform, Conservative and Orthodox synagogues, he continues. These are prayers which are common to all of them, and then the analyses are based on the understanding of contemporary poetry - the interaction of structure, of form, the function of sound. Simmel, who envisions this as the first in a series of Jewish-related courses, is pushing the fact that it's in essence, a mobile classroom. I'm interested in using various kinds of media to impact the breadth of adult Jewish learning, he says. And I want to be able to deliver it in a very convenient way to people everywhere - people who might not have the time to go to a class but could in fact listen to a half-hour lecture on their way to work or on their way back from work. That way I have an ability to impact more people than classroom teaching could ever do. Alan Teperow, executive director of the Newton-based Synagogue Council of Massachusetts, says his organization partnered on the project because We are interested in its Jewish educational value. We think it's going to be transformative, that eventually more and more people will hear about it and will be using it when they're driving in their cars or walking around or exercising. Simmel and Kimelman worked together in the structure and presentation of the series, while Kimelman did all of the writing. Yet, when asked separately, they have different responses to the same question: Will the course be of much interest to non-Jewish audiences? It would probably be useful only to specialized non-Jews who are

REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION Copyright C 2005 Rabbi Jack Riemer A NEW WAY TO DELIVER JEWISH EDUCATION THE HIDDEN POETRY OF THE JEWISH PRAYERBOOK The What, How, and Why of Jewish Liturgy by Reuven Kimelman Published by Our Learning Company, Brookline, Massachusetts 2005. Ten discs, plus study text and charts, $225. Reviewed by Rabbi Jack Riemer Rabbi Jack Riemer is the co editor of So That Your Values Live On: A treasury of Jewish Ethical Wills and the editor of the three volumes of The World of the High Holy Days, and Jewish Reflections on Death, a classic resource which assists mourners. He has lectured at universities, healing centers, synagogues and churches around the world and has been called probably the most quoted rabbi in the country by tzedakah guru Danny Siegel. In addition, Rabbi Riemer has also written prayers and poems that have been published in prayer books of both the Conservative and Reform movements, and has published articles in most major journals of Jewish thought throughout America and abroad. A new term has entered our vocabulary in recent years. It is multitasking. It used to be called doing several things at the same time, and our parents used to rebuke us for doing it, but now we lead such harried lives that we feel we are not being productive if we just do one thing at a time. I, for example, multitask whenever I go to the barbershop. I get a haircut-that's one thing. I get my nails done at the same time-that's two things. While the manicurist is doing my right hand, I read-that's three. While she is doing my left hand, I write--that's four. And since she complains that I disturb her by turning pages too often, I now read Hebrew, which takes me a little longer-so that's five. I am not alone in feeling the need to do more than one thing at a time. Go into any gym and watch the people exercising-I love exercise, I can watch it all day-or watch the people jogging by, and you will see that many of them are wearing headphones so that they can listen while they work out. It only needed someone smart to make the connection between this practice and the need for a new way to deliver Jewish education, and now Sergiu Simmel has done it. Sergiu Simmel, who is a management consultant in Boston, came up with the idea of delivering Jewish education in a new way to meet the needs of busy people. He studied in the Me'ah Program of the Boston Hebrew College and came in contact with some of the city's best Judaic scholars. He asked these scholars how many people they reach in a year of teaching, and the answers that he got were usually less than a few hundred. He decided that these numbers were unacceptable in today's world of communication. But a scholar can only teach so many classes in a year, fly to only so many places on the map, and accept only so many people into his or her classroom. Publishing lectures in book form was an obvious answer, but there is something about the power of the spoken word that gets lost on the printed page. Publishing lectures on video was another possibility, but many people are too busy nowadays to sit still and watch a screen. And so Mr. Simmel came up with the idea of an 'audio coursebook'-a combination of CDs combined with additional learning materials. It is a good idea, for how many of us have the energy after a day of work to drive to a classroom? And how many of us can find a babysitter, and leave our children to go off to a class on a regular basis ? These CDs now make it possible to study while driving to and from work, though I must warn you that the points are sometimes so interesting that you may be tempted to pull off to the side of the road in order to make notes and a traffic cop may not be understanding if you try to tell him that you were so busy concentrating on a lecture that you forgot to signal when you turned. The first volume in this projected series consists of Professor Reuven Kimelman teaching the Prayerbook. The Prayerbook is the central book of Jewish life and thought. It is the book that more Jews come in contact with than any other. And yet, for most of us, the Prayerbook is a closed book-even in translation. What does it say and how does it say it and why does it say it? What did it mean to those who composed it and what can it mean to us today? Dr. Kimelman's eighteen lectures are accompanies by over sixty pages of text which include his translation of the Prayerbook text and twenty-what the publisher calls mind-maps, printed on foldouts. If you listen to the tapes and follow the maps that go with them, you begin to understand the architecture of the Prayerbook. You see how Biblical, Talmudic and Kabbalistic themes are interwoven on each page and how each prayer is carefully constructed. And, when you are done listening to these discs, you are not only better able to understand the workings of the Prayerbook; you are
