Re: [ha-Safran]: Tu B'Shevat Books for a blog post

2011-01-31 Thread Susan Dubin
There is a new Jewish publisher! PJ Library is going to be working
with Marshall Cavendish to bring a new Jewish publisher. Here is the
article from Publisher's Weekly:
Susan Dubin

New Jewish Children's Books Line Launching This Fall
by Lynn Garrett
Jan 26, 2011
  ShareThis | | Reader Comments (0)

Marshall Cavendish, a New York-area publisher of adult trade,
reference and children's books, as well as curriculum and digital
research resources, is partnering with The PJ Library, a Jewish
literacy program in Massachusetts, to launch a line of Jewish
children's books. The first titles under the new Shofar Books imprint
will release this fall; they include The Golem's Latkes; Hanukkah, Oh
Hanukkah; Many Days; and One Shabbat.??

The PJ Library is a nonprofit program that distributes some 65,000
books each month free to families in the United States and Canada.
Half of the cost is paid by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, a Jewish
philanthropic organization, which launched The PJ Library in 2005
with a mission of strengthening Jewish identity and encouraging
involvement in Jewish life. The other half of the cost is provided by
philanthropists, Jewish federations, community centers, and other
non-profit organizations in local communities.

Marshall Cavendish is not new to publishing Jewish children's books,
and it has already been selling books to The PJ Library for its
program. Under the terms of the new partnership PJ will provide its
expertise in Judaica and the Jewish book market, participating in the
acquisitions process and offering its seal of approval for the books.
In addition to a healthy base of sales through The PJ Library, Shofar
Books will be distributed through retail channels and to Jewish
libraries and synagogues, according to Margery Cuyler, publisher of
Marshall Cavendish Children's Books, who approached PJ about forming
the partnership. She said the imprint will publish four to six books per year.

[ha-Safran]: Author available to speak

2011-01-31 Thread Susan Dubin
Author and retired librarian Hava Ben Zvi is available to speak at
schools, libraries, and adult learning groups in Southern California.
Hava was the librarian at the Jewish Community Library of Los Angeles
and is a Holocaust survivor. Her memoir Eva's Journey: A Young
Girl's True Story is the true story of how she survived and is
appropriate for young adult readers. It has been used to support
curriculum in Jewish and public schools.

Her book The Bride Who Argued with God: Tales from the Treasury of
Jewish Folklore and Portraits in Literature: The Jews Of Poland. An
Anthology, which will be published April, 2011, are collections of
folktales for adults. Hava's storytelling style brings these
folktales to life for a new generation of readers who should be
familiar with these tales from Jews in Eastern Europe. Reviews of all
three books can be found at http://havabenzvi.wordpress.com. Please
contact Hava at hava.ben...@att.net to schedule a visit.

[ha-Safran]: Have a good Pesach

2010-04-08 Thread Susan Dubin
A little too late - Sorry

My mother used to say: Esrogim nokh Sukes

Hasafran Moderator

Dear Safranim,
Just a brief break from cleaning and cooking to wish you all a
beautiful and memorable Pesach. I wrote a poem about the seder that I
am copying below for you to enjoy:

Seder

Freedom must come from order.

Order in our lives gives us freedom to explore.

Order to our thoughts leaves room for imagination.

Order in our telling gives meaning to our story.

This is the order of our seder:

First we bless the candles

Then we bless the wine.

A holy space is thereby marked in our mundane world.

We are commanded to welcome and to serve the needy.

Now we can welcome the stranger.

Let all who are hungry, come and eat.

Wash hands.

Prepare a clean space for freed hearts.

Dip the greens in salty tears.

The symbol of spring replaces the winter of weeping.

Renewal of hope in the pool of misery.

Next we break the middle matzah.

The bread of affliction,

Symbol of our haste,

Is broken in its heart.

The hidden piece allows us to hold back

Let our hurry wait.

After dinner, after the story is told,

We will search for that HIDDEN PIECE,

The piece we need to be whole.

And why?

Why do we celebrate?

Why do we eat like this?

Why?

Ask and answer.

Ah, the story…

Let me tell you…

If you only knew…

You wouldn't believe it…

But, it's true!

The ten plagues recounted

Dayenu

Enough

A second cup of wine

Halleluyah, we praise G-d.

Matzah to eat

(To eat, at last!)

Matzah alone, Matzah and bitter herbs, Matzah and sweet charoset
dipped in bitter herbs.

Charoset and Matzah. And Charoset. More Charoset.

Not ever enough sweetness to replace bitter memory.

Dinner, too?

Dayenu! Enough food.

Find the afikomen.

Now blessings.

We welcome Elijah

Not stranger but guide.

We are free,

But we are promised more than mere freedom.

Bring us Shalom, the wholeness of peace.

Two more cups of wine.

Next year together again in health, we pray.

Sing then of our journey

 From bondage to freedom

From narrow thoughts to open acceptance

 From sorrow to joy.

Thank G-d for our seder

Thank G-d for our freedom

Thank G-d for our lives.

Wishing everyone a hag sameach v'kasher,
Susan Dubin

[ha-Safran]: Letter to directors encouraging attendance at convention

2010-03-01 Thread Susan Dubin
Dear friends,
Below is a letter that you can copy, print, and give to the director
of your institution encouraging their support. I will also be mailing
this to all institutions.
Sincerely,
Susan Dubin
AJL President

Dear Director,

We are delighted to inform you that your librarian has been invited
to attend the annual convention of the Association of Jewish
Libraries, Inc. (AJL). As you know, the AJL is an international
organization with over 1,000 members devoted to the educational,
informational and networking needs of those responsible for
collections of Judaica. The annual Convention, the venue for much of
this networking and information exchange, is its most important
event, the first in the Pacific Northwest.

The 45th annual convention of the Association of Jewish Libraries
will take place at the Seattle Fairmont Hotel, Seattle, Washington,
from Sunday, July 4 through Wednesday, July 7, 2010. Through its
annual conventions, AJL offers a variety of professionally prepared
and presented programs on a wide range of subjects relevant for all
types of Judaic librarians. Once again, AJL has created a set of
sessions to meet the specific needs of librarians and volunteers,
both professionally trained and untrained. This exceptional
opportunity will enable your librarian to enhance the value of your
library by sharing all the new information gained by participating in
this event.

If your librarian is not a member of AJL, we recommend that s/he join
via the application form found on the AJL website at
www.jewishlibraries.org . If your librarian chooses not to join AJL,
s/he may still attend the conference, but must pay the higher, non-member rate.

Please support your librarian's attendance at this most important
event. The library is a key center of learning in your institution,
and your librarian's participation in conferences such as this
ensures that your institution will continue to receive the highest
value from your librarian's increased knowledge.

You will find a registration form, information about travel and food,
as well as a full Convention program on the AJL website at
www.jewishlibraries.org . I am happy to answer any additional
questions regarding participation in this year's Convention. You can
email me atpresid...@jewishlibraries.org or reach me by phone at 818-606-0793.

We hope your institution will take advantage of this opportunity, and
we look forward to seeing your librarian at the Convention.

Sincerely yours,

Susan Dubin

[ha-Safran]: Survey

2010-02-28 Thread Susan Dubin
Could you please post this survey on your mailing list.

Thank you,

Magda El-Sherbini

Ohio State University
--
Colleagues,

We are writing and invite you to participate in a brief survey on the
application of Non-English Subject access to the bibliographic
records on library catalog. There are only 12 questions, and the
survey will take fewer than 5 minutes to complete. Participation is
voluntary. There will be no personal identification questions asked
throughout the survey, and in any case, the response will be kept confidential.

This survey investigates on how library users, like you, are
accessing non-English, especially non-Roman language materials by
subject and will determine the needs to add non-English subject
headings to bibliographic records. Also, the investigation will
reveal if user would prefer to access library materials by subject
through social tagging or any other manners of non-controlled vocabularies.

We appreciate your willingness to participate in this survey, and we
thank you in advance for your time. Please feel free to contact us if
you have any specific questions.

This is an online survey form posted on Google Docs:

(Click on the Submit button under the form when you are done)

If you prefer, we would be happy to send a paper copy in the mail so
that it could be completed without using electronic communications,
or to send the survey as an email attachment.

It has been an extraordinary privilege to work with Elhanan through
AJL. There is no way we can ever repay him for his outstanding
contributions to the field of Judaic Librarianship and librarianship
in general. He serves as a role model for those now in the field and
for future librarians.

Many hearty congratulations, Elhanan on your retirement, and all
your myriad of accomplishments.

Has there ever been any kind of study on the importance of libraries
in synagogues? Statistics?
Any data would be helpful. If no such study exists as of yet, would
it be possible to design such a study?

[ha-Safran]: AJL is an ALA Affiliate

2010-01-31 Thread Susan Dubin
It is official! We are now an ALA affiliate organization. ALA will be
setting up a page for our organization on their website. We are
invited to send 2 representatives to ALA in summer and also to
Midwinter. At Midwinter we will be part of a lunch meeting with their
Executive Director. At summer we can have a table with information about AJL.

ALA also announced the Sydney Taylor Awards in their newsletter.

This should give AJL much more visibility and hopefully allow us to
reach many more people.

  Thanks to all who helped,

Susan Dubin

AJL committees to maintain
these activities on an ongoing basis.

Qualifications:

[ha-Safran]: AJL Memebership

2009-09-07 Thread Susan Dubin
As the New Year is fast approaching, I want to greet our new AJL
members and remind those that have not yet rewed their membership for
2009-2010 that they should send in their forms now.

Being an AJL member entitles you to copies of our quarterly
Newsletter with articles about the news in Judaica Librarianship and
current book reviews. Members also receive our scholarly journal,
Judaica Librarianship and reduced rates at conferences and Convention.

The Convention in 2010 will be in the Pacific Northwest for the first
time. Seattle is a beautiful, book-loving city, and our Convention
will take place right in its heart with outstanding programs and
special treats. Our keynote speaker will be famed librarian Nancy Pearl.

In addition, AJL members may receive discounts from some vendors such
as Kar-Ben, Pitspopany, Mackin, and others in development.

Don't miss out! Membership forms are available on our website at
www.jewishlibraries.org . Annual membership is $50 for individuals or
institutions. Institutional members may designate one person as their
member. Others from the same institution pay individual rates. There
are also retired librarian and student rates.

Have a wonderful, healthy, prosperous New Year!

B'shalom,

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AUGUST, 2009

FROM: Kathleen Hughes

Libraries Prosper: A Guide to Using the PLA Advocacy Toolkit, by
Sandra Nelson, is now available for purchase from the Public Library
Association (PLA). The first in PLA's new 'Train the Trainer
series,' this electronic publication supports Libraries Prosper with
Passion, Purpose, and Persuasion: A PLA Toolkit for Success.

Designed for a one-day advocacy training program, this electronic
publication will instruct library trainers how to apply the
fundamental principles behind Libraries Prosper to their own
workshops. By using the guide, trainers will be able to create a
sample advocacy plan for a library, adapt the general training agenda
for specific audiences, answer questions relating to the materials
from training participants, provide concrete local examples of how
each of the resources in the Toolkit might be used, lead general
discussions and group interactions, and manage small-group discussion
and reporting processes.

Included in the toolkit are sample introductions (pdf file),
Trainer's Guidelines (pdf file), Master Training Program (includes
trainer's agenda, PowerPoint, script, and participant handouts), and
a modified training program designed for presenting to trustees and
library supporters.

Libraries Prosper: A Guide to Using the PLA Advocacy Toolkit
(ISBN 13: 978-0-8389-9713-0) costs $45.00, with discounts available
for ALA and PLA members. To order, contact the American Library
Association Order Department, 800-545-2433, press 7. For more
information, contact the PLA office at 800-545-2433, ext. 5PLA.

Sandra Nelson is the author of Implementing for Results: Your
Strategic Plan in Action (ALA, 2009) and Strategic Planning for

[ha-Safran]: Donations in memory of Dov Klein

2009-07-20 Thread Susan Dubin
Dear Safranim,

Many people asked about where they could make a donation in memory of
Dov Klein, son of Adaire and Manny Klein. I spoke to Adaire
yesterday, and she said that they are making a memorial garden in
memory of Dov at her synagogue, B'nai David Judea in Los Angeles.
Donations may be sent in Dov's memory to:

Dov Klein Memorial Garden Fund
B'nai David Judea
8906 West Pico Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA90035
Attention: Amram

Dov loved working in the garden, and Adaire felt this was a fitting
memorial for him.

May his name always be for a blessing, and may Manny and Adaire find
comfort in the warm feelings of their friends.

[ha-Safran]: Annual Mazon Donation at Convention

2009-07-02 Thread Susan Dubin
MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger

The only national Jewish organization whose sole focus is hunger
relief, Mazon helps to provide nourishment and promote
self-sufficiency for hundreds of thousands of people at risk of
hunger in America, Israel and around the world.

Mazon is a leader in the global anti-hunger movement. Since 1985
Mazon has granted tens of millions of dollars to emergency food
providers, food banks, multi-service organizations and advocacy
groups that seek solutions to the problem of hunger.

Our support makes it possible!

The AJL's convention started a tradition of its own: we have
generously given to MAZON in Cambridge, Scottsdale, and Cleveland,
and we want to make Chicago as memorable!

We will be placing Mazon envelopes on the tables at the banquet, and
ask you to give from the heart.

Thank you

[ha-Safran]: Closing all high school libraries - SOS

from:

10 Reasons Why the Internet Is No Substitute for a Library [2001]
By Mark Y. Herring, Dean of Library Services
Dacus Library, Winthrop University, Rock Hill, South Carolina

Aren't There Library-less Universities Now?
No. The newest state university in California at Monterey opened
without a library building a few years ago. For the last two years,
they've been buying books by the tens of thousands because --
surprise, surprise -- they couldn't find what they needed on the
Internet. California Polytechnic State University, home of the
world's highest concentration of engineers and computer geeks,
explored the possibility of a virtual (fully electronic) library for
two years. Their solution was a $42-million traditional library with,
of course, a strong electronic component. In other words, a fully
virtualized library just can't be done. Not yet, not now, not in our lifetimes.

But a Virtual State Library Would Do It, Right?
Do what, bankrupt the state? Yes, it would. The cost of having
everything digitized is incredibly high, costing tens of millions of
dollars just in copyright releases. And this buys only one virtual
library at one university. Questia Media, the biggest such outfit,
just spent $125 million digitizing 50,000 books released (but not to
libraries!) in January. At this rate, to virtualize a medium-sized
library of 400,000 volumes wo uld cost a mere $1,000,000,000! Then
you need to make sure students have equitable access everywhere they
need it, when they need it. Finally, what do you do with rare and
valuable primary sources once they are digitized? Take them to the
dump? And you must hope the power never, ever goes out. Sure,
students could still read by candlelight, but what would they be reading?

If anything, there is even MORE of a need for a collaborative space where

students from different small learning communities can communicate in an

educational setting. There is even MORE of a need for the resources that

can be provided collectively with funding from each of the SLCs, rather

than duplicating expensive resources many times over or going without

them. When I worked at a high school that moved to become small schools

rather than one big high school, our usage increased. The same is true for

Berkeley High, which has 4 small schools and 2 programs serving the 3400

students. We have 2 teacher librarians and one beautiful library that

serves everyone on that campus. Aren't the SLCs still sharing the

socer/football field? What about the cafeteria, the auditorium?

 Dear all,

This is for the high schools utilizing the small learning community

model. How have your library services changed utilizing this model? Do

you see an increased need for school libraries utilizing this model, a

decrease or the same? Our district has moved to this model for all four

 of our comprehensive=2

high school libraries because there is a perceived notion that libraries

will not be necessary. I am the teacher librarian at a relatively new

high school that has been utilizing the SLC model since it opened so I do

 not have a comparison.

Please respond ASAP – the district librarian is at a hearing today that

[ha-Safran]: Gale publishing on Israel

2009-04-22 Thread Susan Dubin
  Dear Safranim,

I am writing to follow up to my post to this listserv from January
14th of this year, regarding the available content in some of Gale's
database products, most notably Global Issues in Context. As
promised, Gale has been working aggressively over the last few months
to expand our broad coverage of current events in the Middle East.

I am happy to announce to this group that we have recently signed
an additional 16 titles, including:

Globes (McClatchy News Service): This publication covers political,
business and technology news and is published in Tel Aviv.

Commentary (Commentary, Inc): A scholarly magazine publishing
analysis and opinion on contemporary issues in politics, religion,
foreign affairs, social policy, culture, and the arts.

Israel Studies (Indiana University Press): A journal devoted to
multidisciplinary scholarship on Israeli history, politics, society,
and culture, with emphasis on the current State of Israel, including
the effect of events in the Diaspora communities.

Israel National News (Arutz Sheva): Based in the West Bank, Arutz
Sheva is a voice of the Israeli settlement movement and a views
itself as a counterbalance to the 'negative thinking' and
'post-Zionist' attitudes so prevalent in Israel's liberal-left media.

Adva Center: Adva Center is an action-oriented Israeli policy
analysis center. Gale's agreement includes 11 titles ranging from
Education to Development Globalization, Social Reports to Employment.

InFocus (Jewish Policy Center): The Jewish Policy Center's quarterly
journal, InFocus is a collection of scholarly essays that focus on a
specific policy theme each quarter.

We plan to have current coverage of all of these sources available in
our InfoTrac and Global Issues in Context products within the next
month. Articles from Globes, Commentary, and Israel Studies have
already been included in both these files. As always, we thank you
for your continued interest in and attention to Gale's products, and
we look forward to seeing many of you this summer at AJL and ALA in Chicago.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Seeing a list of past book reviews

2009-04-20 Thread Susan Dubin
Here is the copy of that discussion:
It seems to be the consensus of the Council that we are interested in
providing Newsletter reviews in an online searchable database.
However, there are several details that need to be decided:

a.. Which reviews do we make public?
b.. How far back do we go?
c.. Should more recent reviews be available in a password protected
members only section?

Nancy Sack will return from vacation in early August, and as
Webmaster, she should be consulted about her thoughts on this matter.
She did email that she has many of the articles in pdf format so no
digitization would be necessary for those reviews.

There was also a note from Ted Koppel:
I don't think that AJL has ever digitized the full text of all the
reviews, but the Index to Jewish Periodicals has *citations* to all
of the AJL Newsletter book reviews - and tens of thousands of other
book reviews. (Reviews 1988-present online) Online availability
through Ebsco by subscription.

Who would like to work on this issue, gather the necessary
information and get back to us with a proposal?

Suzi Dubin

I have not had any new information. If this is still of interest,
would you be available to get the details on what it would take and
get back to me?

[ha-Safran]: Library Advocacy next steps

2009-03-02 Thread Susan Dubin
Here is a good way to look at advocacy. We need to get the message
out that what we do is valuable and fits the goals and objectives
already established by our funders!

This message was from the California Library K-12 listserv:

To build on where the money is and goesI've found that dialogues
are more productive when driven by prioritizing outcomes first and
funding second. The funding justifications for school libraries are
about matching the library program to district-wide objectives
goals: raising test scores, increasing literacy, mentoring/staff
development for teachers, decreasing student to teacher ratios when
TLs collaborate, college readiness, etc. etc. When districts choose
to invest in specific areas, show how the library program
accomplishes them. One of our strengths is adapting quicker to
educational changes than classrooms. There has to be a
redistribution of the dwindling dollars and new ways of delivering
public education. The funding deciders expect pleas for
dollars. Change the dynamic by being on their side to problem-solve
for the good of the whole.

[ha-Safran]: AJL is in the News -- Northwest Regional Coming Up

2009-02-10 Thread Susan Dubin
The Western Regional Conference in Los Angeles was the subject of an
article in Publisher's Weekly. Although the organization wasn't named
directly, the conference garnered very favorable reviews. Here is the
link: http://www.publishersweekly.com/article/CA6634517.html?nid=2788

A wonderful article about the upcoming Northwest Regional Conference
From Word to Deed appeared in the JT News. Here is the link :

The article failed to include the outstanding work of Janet
Heineck, 2010 Co-chair, or the the help of Tessa Bennion who has
produced beautiful publicity, but it does give a full picture of AJL.

From Word to Deed takes place Sun., Feb 15, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at
Temple Beth Am, 2632 NE 80th St., Seattle. For information and
reservations, contact aj...@earthlink.net.

For Toby Harris, the librarian for Temple De Hirsch Sinai, the
decision to put on a regional conference for the Association of
Jewish Libraries in Seattle is a no-brainer.
We Seattleites love our libraries, said Harris, a member of the AJL
and co-chair for the event, which will take place Sun., Feb. 15 at
Temple Beth Am.
Titled From Word to Deed: Teaching our Children Through Literature,
the conference will focus on the various ways the Jewish tradition is
expressed through children's literature, specifically how the
Holocaust is presented to young readers. The event will also provide
an opportunity for local Jews to learn about the AJL.
The AJL has more than 20 chapters in North America and one in Israel.
The organization's primary goal is to provide support for Jewish
libraries and librarians through recommended book lists, online
support forums, connections to Jewish publishers, scholarships, and
various educational opportunities. This marks the first time the
organization has hosted a conference in the Pacific Northwest,
however, as the region does not have a formal chapter.
Rita Frischer, event co-chair and an AJL member of more than 30
years, thinks the time has come for Washington State to join the fold.
The organization has been around a long time. They have chapters all
over the country, and now they've had their eye on the Northwest,
Frischer said. This is an area that is so family-oriented. Our
experience is that when we talk about libraries, it's often times
parents with young children who want to get involved first.
The conference, which organizers hope will draw in close to a hundred
people from the local Jewish community, will feature exhibits on
children's literature and Temple Beth Am's literary journal, Drash,
as well as lectures by the Seattle Hebrew Academy's head of school
Rivy Poupko Kletenik and Lisa Silverman, children's book editor of
Jewish Book World magazine.
Lisa Silverman is a real children's literature expert, Frischer
said. She's particularly interested in how to deal with the
Holocaust in children's books. She's very knowledgeable.
The conference will also provide time for networking and discussion.
And there will be food, obviously. You don't have a Jewish event
with out food, she added.
According to Frischer, the AJL has member librarians at all manner of
institutions, from major universities to small synagogue libraries.
Aside from Harris at TDHS, there are only a handful of member
librarians in the region.
We might not ever get the critical mass for a formal chapter out
here, admitted Frischer, who recently moved to Seattle from Los
Angeles where she worked as the library director for Sinai Temple for
more than 20 years. But there may be enough people who want to
network to get something going.
According to Harris, the conference isn't just for librarians, however.
Teachers are always looking for educational opportunities like
this, she said. And there are just so many incredible Jewish
authors out there right now. A lot parents are interested in how they
can pass some of these traditions down to their children and they are
looking for books as a place to start.
The February event will be a pre-cursor to the AJL's 2010 annual
international conference, to be held the in first weekend of July at
the Fairmont Olympic Hotel in Seattle. According to Frischer, the
AJL's decision to host its largest annual event in Seattle signals
real interest in bringing more libraries in the region into the organization.
I was in New York at the midwinter board and council meeting,
Frischer said. They are so excited about coming to Seattle.
The annual international conference typically draws several hundred
participants from the U.S., Canada and as far away as Israel and South Africa.

Title: Essential Tools Tips for Successful Web Searching (Online
learning course)

Dates: February 24 – March 23, 2009

To register for this workshop: Use the online registration form at
http://infopeople.org/workshop/419

Fee: $75 for those in the California library community and $150 for
those out-of-state.

Google it is the way a lot of people find information. Often, we
(and our users) ask Google and are amazed how often it works. But
sometimes we get too much. Or, even when we know the answer is on the
web, we cannot construct a search that pulls out just what we need.
We get millions of search results and wonder What next? We lack a
search strategy for navigating the billions of web pages and other
stuff that's out there.

•What goes on in search engines? How do they think about searching?
•What are today's best search engines after Google? Why are they the best?
•What are the most useful search commands? Will they work beyond Google?
•How can I create searches that effectively zero in on just what I need?
•When is it time to turn from web search engines to subject
directories (like lii.org)?
•How can I find good, specific directories on subjects my users or I
need to explore?
•Is there a best search strategy for searching for a variety of information?
•How do I deal with the need to evaluate all the stuff on the web quickly?

In this course, you will explore answers to all these questions and
more. It offers a comprehensive introduction to the best search
engines and general subject directories, to many ways to use them to
find information quickly and efficiently, and an overall search
strategy applicable to most web searching. It is designed for those
who want to refresh their web search skills or are fairly new to web
searching. It consolidates the instructor's 12 years of experience
teaching web search.

Workshop Description: This four-week online learning course will help
you at the reference desk or in any situation where you think, I bet
that's on the web; let's take a look. It is designed to enhance your
speed and confidence deciding where to search, why, and how. Through
online readings and individual exercises, you will be able to apply
and practice the essential tips and tools of web searching. The
instructor will provide cheat sheets that can be used after the course.

During the course, you will be doing exercises and taking quizzes to
help you verify your grasp of the tips and tools explained in the
weekly readings. You will also participate in online discussion
forums and have a chance to submit a real question from your own
experience to be searched and answered by another student in the
class. We will discuss your successes and frustrations with this
ready for anything exercise in terms of the search strategies
offered in this course.

Preliminary Course Outline: Using your web browser and your Internet
connection, you will log in to the Infopeople online learning site
and complete the following learning modules:

•Module One: The Best Web Search Engines Today
How search engines work
Strengths and weaknesses of the best search engines
Essential search principles shared by almost all search engines

•Module Two: Using Limiter Commands to Focus Your Search Results
Essential limiter commands and how they work
Building effective searches using and combining limiter commands

•Module Three: When to Turn to Subject Directories
The best general subject directories today
The essentials of evaluating what you find on the web
Using Google to find specialized subject directories and link-rich pages

•Module Four: Being Ready for Anything
Developing search strategies for different kinds of questions
Analyzing questions, learning as you go, and remaining flexible

Instructor: Joe Barker. Until June 2007, Joe worked full time as a
reference and instruction librarian at the University of California,
Berkeley, in the Doe library and the Moffitt undergraduate library.
He also maintained an online web searching tutorial which remains one
of the most heavily used resources for finding and evaluating
information on the web. Joe Barker has been teaching web searching
for Infopeople, especially in connection with answering reference
questions, since 2000 on topics such as PowerSearch, State of the Art
Web Searching, Extreme Googling, Making the Most of the Post-Google
Web, and Web 2.0: Searching Innovations.

Online Learning Details:
This four-week course will be taught online using the web. When you
register, you will receive a registration confirmation that will
include the URL to get to the course, as well as a username and password.

[ha-Safran]: Mentoring vs Library Consultant

2008-12-17 Thread Susan Dubin
Shalom, everyone and Happy Hanukkah!

As we get ready to end 2008, take a minute to think about the ways
you might be able to help a librarian new to the field. The Mentor
Committee is looking for a few people interested in helping a new
librarian in their fields of expertise. Being a Mentor means
answering questions and giving some suggestions to someone who needs
help. It is a way for a new member to make connections and feel like
part of the group.

Being a Mentor does NOT mean giving full service to someone trying to
set up a library from scratch. That is a job for a library
consultant, a paid professional position. As a mentor, you may answer
questions such as which library software programs might work well for
a particular library, where to catalog a certain book, or how to
teach a specific library concept. It does NOT mean cataloging an
entire collection, ordering and setting up a software program, laying
out a floor plan, or providing an entire curriculum.

If you think you might like to connect with another librarian who
needs some help, contact the Mentor Committee. If you think you might
like to help the Mentor Committee make decisions about the roles of
mentors, please contact the committee chairs, Sarah Leah Gross or
Diane Romm. Both can be found on the organizational chart found on
the AJL web page.

B'shalom,
Susan Dubin

[ha-Safran]: Sad News

2008-11-25 Thread Susan Dubin
With great sadness we mourn the death of Margot Berman. She served
AJL as President from 1976-1978 and was awarded Life Membership for
her service in 1992. She was the author of How to Organize a Jewish
Library . Margot was a true role model for many of us in Judaica
Librarianship. Her name will always be remembered...

Susan Dubin
AJL President

Margot S. Berman died November 23, 2008 at age 79. She was the
beloved and loving mother of Melissa Berman (Richard Klotz) and
Carrie Berman (Michael Foltman); wife of the late Irwin Berman;
grandmother of Daniel and Rachel Klotz; sister of Harry Strauss (Ruth
Strauss); aunt of Stephanie Strauss (Bill Regenold) and Andrea
Strauss (Alegria Cupit); great-aunt of Simon, Nina and David Regenold
and of Ari and Ian Cupit-Strauss. She was committed and devoted to
her family, and that devotion lives in their hearts. Margot Berman
was born in Germany, coming to New York City at age 8. Despite a
lifelong battle with Gaucher's Disease, she lived a life of courage,
ideas and grace. She was the founding head librarian of the
synagogue and school library at Temple Beth Am of Miami. Through her
story hours and book programs, she inspired countless children to
become lifelong readers. She served as president of the Association
of Jewish Libraries, and was a mentor to synagogue librarians across
the country. The funeral service will be held on November 30th at
10:30 a.m. at Lakeview Cemetery in Ithaca, NY. Donations in her
memory may be made to the Association of Jewish Libraries
(www.jewishlibraries.org), which is establishing an award in her
honor. Condolences may be sent to Margot's daughters at the
following addresses:

[ha-Safran]: Gale response to AJL criticism of Article on

Dear Safranim,

There has been much discussion on this listserv about the article on
Zionism published by Gale in their Encyclopedia of Race and Racism. I
have been in contact with the publisher and expressed AJL's concerns
about the article. Gale is aware of the controversial nature of this
article and has responded to the criticism of it in the letter copied
below. After discussion with several of the AJL members in the RAS
division, we agree that Gale's response shows a willingness to
recognize the problem and take steps to correct it. Gale is the
publisher of several well-respected reference works of interest to
Judaic librarians including Encyclopedia Judaica.

Here is the letter:

November 10, 2008

A Message from Gale, a part of Cengage Learning, regarding the
Encyclopedia of Race and Racism.

In November 2007, Gale, under its Macmillan Reference USA imprint,
published the Encyclopedia of Race and Racism. Edited and written by
scholars from a variety of fields, this work examines the
anthropological, sociological, historical, economic, cultural, and
scientific aspects of race and racism in the modern era.

The encyclopedia contains over 400 signed, peer-reviewed articles. A
complete list of articles, contributors and their affiliations, and
editorial board members is available from a special link at www.gale.com.

One article in the encyclopedia, Zionism, has sparked controversy
among some readers who have challenged the accuracy of the article
and questioned whether this topic is appropriate for inclusion in an
encyclopedia on race and racism.

Gale's role as publisher of the Encyclopedia is not to present a
particular viewpoint on any topic, but to provide well founded
information that presents a broad scope of knowledge and views on a
subject. Further, while we cannot and do not shy away from
controversial views, we are committed to providing comprehensive,
respectful coverage. Based on the constructive feedback we have
received, we have concluded that we should offer a broader range of
views on the subject of Zionism.

With an apology to those who believe that we failed, in this case, to
live up to our high standards to publish a fair and balanced account,
we are taking the following steps. First, we suggest that readers
visit the websites of organizations such as the Zionist Organization
of America (www.zoa.org) and the American Jewish Committee
(www.ajc.org) who have contacted Gale to communicate their objections
and express their viewpoints.

In addition, we have begun to commission a series of articles for the
online edition of the encyclopedia that will address these objections
in several ways. We will commission several articles on Zionism that
engage perspectives other than those given in the current article.
Gale will work with well respected scholars to plan these additional
articles and to identify authoritative authors. In addition, in
recognition that national movements do not equate to racism, we will
commission articles that address other forms of nationalism in order
to present this topic in a broader context.

Gale's objective is to provide publications that support critical
thinking and informed debate. Gale's editorial integrity in
presenting a broad array of viewpoints in a balanced manner is well
known and acknowledged in the library and academic communities.
Accordingly, where our readers and customers identify ways to improve
our publications to deliver on this goal, we gratefully consider them.

We will update this message with further information as authors for
additional Zionism articles are chosen and other topics are added.

B'shalom,
Susan Dubin

[ha-Safran]: AJL MIdwinter

2008-11-06 Thread Susan Dubin
Dear Safranim,

The AJL Midwinter meetings of Board and Council will be here before
we know it! I just sent an email to Board and Council about the
meetings. Please let me know if you did not receive it! We have many
new ideas for AJL and look forward to talking about them at Midwinter
and pushing these programs ahead.

We are still looking for people to help with our National
Conventions. If you want a really exciting and challenging way to get
involved in our organization and give your library some national
visibility, then contact Fred Isaac or Shoshanah Seidman, our
National Convention Chairs , about ways you can help. We especially
need someone who is good at email contacts and wants to help contact
our exhibitors. We also need people interested in helping to organize
our 2010 convention in Seattle. We have a dedicated group of people
there who are starting to make plans and they would love to work with you!

We also need people interested in mentoring librarians who need some
guidance in Judaic librarianship. If you would like to be mentor,
contact Stephanie Gross, Mentoring Committee Chair.

Thanks to our wonderful PR Committee who has just made available some
of the podcasts of sessions at the 2008 Convention. Check back for
more throughout the year.

Heidi Estrin and Andrea Rapp have also made available an extremely
valuable bibliography of books for Israel's 60th birthday. Look for
publicity on it and please share it with other libraries and schools
during Jewish Book Month.

Please check our AJL blog for news and ramblings. I try to post every
week or so. I would love to hear from YOU! Let me now the news in
your library. Share a story, a resource, or just good news.

Looking forward to hearing form you!

You can get Jewish books at all the places you named. There are also
several booksellers who advertise in the AJL Newsletter and post
announcements on HaSafran. In addition, AJL has arranged with Kar-Ben

offers a discount to AJL members.

[ha-Safran]: Shana Tova from AJL

2008-09-26 Thread Susan Dubin
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
As the New Year approaches, I want to take some time to share
with you some of the many new developments we are working on for AJL.

The Library Task Force has been working hand-in-hand with the
Public Relations committee to examine our mission and goals and
develop a strategy for accomplishing initiatives that will move our
organization forward and provide even more support and service to our
members. RAS and SSC Board members have worked with the task force to
come up with a plan for our organization. The specific details are
being honed and will be presented to Council at Midwinter and to the
General Membership at Convention. Thank you to all involved for their
creative ideas and hard work.

The 2009 Chicago Convention Committee is hard at work planning
the upcoming Convention to take place in July, 2009. They are putting
together the program suggestions and papers they received and are
insuring an outstanding experience will be had by all. Right now they
are starting to contact vendors so that we will have an exceptional
array of exhibitors. If you would like to present a session or know
of a possible exhibitor, please contact the Committee through the
information provided on the AJL home page. Definitely mark your
calendar to attend Convention this coming year. It will be an
experience you will long remember.

The Continuing Education Committee is looking at ideas for a
CEU class at Convention. In addition, the marvelous course they
organized for the 2008 Cleveland Convention on Valuing Libraries is
available as a powerpoint over the internet and AJL will underwrite a
visit from the presenter to local chapters or regional groups who
would like to offer this program to their chapter members.

The Mentoring Committee is still accepting volunteers to mentor
librarians who request help as well as those who wish to find a
mentor. Our mentors offer a personal touch to learning and growing in
our profession.

The Accreditation Committee has posted the forms to download if
you wish to apply for library accreditation this year. Accreditation
helps you look at your library and evaluate how well you are meeting
your goals and fulfilling your mission as well as making your school
or synagogue look really good for having an accredited library!

There are many, many people in our organization who volunteer
their time to make our profession the best that it can be. Please
join us and let us know what we can do to help you.

Wishing everyone a healthy, prosperous, and sweet new year.

Shana Tova Metuka,

Susan Dubin
AJL President

Dear Vivian,

That is a very difficult figure to come up with since it varies so
much by State and by experience. I am a Day School librarian and I am
paid a salary comparable to the public school teacher salary in my
area. Unfortunately, though, we do not have comparable benefits.
