[ha-Safran] CHANGE OF DATE FOR SCREENING OF WOMEN'S BALCONY AT MAGEN DAVID
THE TIME FOR WOMEN'S BALCONY AT MAGEN DAVID HAS BEEN CHANGED TO MONDAY MARCH 19TH AT 6:30. A LIGHT DINNER WILL BE SERVED. WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE *MDSC Sisterhood **Presents* *The Women's Balcony* * A Film Screening and Panel Discussion* *Please note new date and time:* *Monday, March 19th, 6:30PM* [image: balcony] Set in an Orthodox Jewish community in Jerusalem, "The Women's Balcony" centers on the literal breakdown of a synagogue. Structural damage to the women's seating section results in a social conflict - one that resonates well beyond its specific milieu. After a balcony in a synagogue collapses during a bar mitzvah, the congregation's Rabbi falls ill. While plans are being made to renovate the house of worship, his replacement, the younger, more conservative Rabbi David, comes in with ideas that divide the community along gender lines. *1hr 36min, Hebrew with English subtitles* Join us for a panel discussion moderated by MDSC member Jan Sedaka, with the participation of female leaders Rabbanit Edna Ovadia and Rabbanit Sara Antine of Beth Sholom Congregation and others. Doors open at 6:15PM for Jerusalem inspired light supper Screening will begin at 6:30PM *Advance Tickets (ends March 16)* Member Rate $5 Non-Member Rate $10 *At the Door* Member Rate $8 Non-Member Rate $13 Purchase Tickets Here <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001Us6JDZ5qJP-pi_Xzl84jfxI6RY_vPa83mTM6wexGzg-MZTAcTsm0cCyIUJUIHtJHdVZzNo217QJfmTVmPI-j9CgDw-O9bK66mV8lNuoksXQa9j3_3f72Ain5_p5TpKJhPsB378AFKBk0CxC7gPQhNg79VOx0iAYQDVh19qAjSY1cL5UtuXUTxlTh2LYBphMKV7eJUAEwYQTWeaGVeiYMKJzpbTlM0EaI&c=jT4rseRQIyjoTvsGXoFyY7DbGJg4oipxf-56p2Gx1qzEqLrfp3Z34g==&ch=9uqERUYbx0ArJxfksx-deckbK6_ow6qPbHJ3fZ6tGoWJM8K_Ti-_tA==> *Limited seating* Magen David Sephardic Congregation,11215 <https://maps.google.com/?q=11215+Woodglen+Drive+,+Rockville+,+MD+20852&entry=gmail&source=g> Woodglen <https://maps.google.com/?q=11215+Woodglen+Drive+,+Rockville+,+MD+20852&entry=gmail&source=g> Drive <https://maps.google.com/?q=11215+Woodglen+Drive+,+Rockville+,+MD+20852&entry=gmail&source=g> , Rockville <https://maps.google.com/?q=11215+Woodglen+Drive+,+Rockville+,+MD+20852&entry=gmail&source=g> , MD <https://maps.google.com/?q=11215+Woodglen+Drive+,+Rockville+,+MD+20852&entry=gmail&source=g> 20852 <https://maps.google.com/?q=11215+Woodglen+Drive+,+Rockville+,+MD+20852&entry=gmail&source=g> __ Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) == Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: hasaf...@lists.service.ohio-state.edu To join Ha-Safran, update or change your subscription, etc. - click here: https://lists.service.ohio-state.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran Questions, problems, complaints, compliments send to: galro...@osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.service.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html Earlier Listserver: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org -- Hasafran mailing list Hasafran@lists.osu.edu https://lists.osu.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran
[ha-Safran] Question about price of set
Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2018 15:55:31 + (UTC) Subject: Question about price of set Dear Hasafranim, I am in the painful process of weeding our collection. I finally bit the bullet and pulled this beautiful 6-vol set of Graetz's History of the Jews published from 1891-1898. It is not in pristine condition and has library markings and circulation pockets in the back. Do you think it has any value at this point? Would a collector be interested? [ha-Safran] A Memoir About A Ukrainian Jewish Girl in Post-Stalin Ukraine - Looking for a publisher
*From:* Anat Shmulovich *Sent:* Sunday, June 3, 2018 1:04 PM *Subject:* A Memoir About A Ukrainian Jewish Girl in Post-Stalin Ukraine *About Me and My Book* My name is Anat Shmulovich. I am a concert pianist and a educator living in New Jersey for thirty seven years. Though I was born in Ukraine, I also lived in Moscow, Vilnius, and Israel, before coming to America. There are many books about Jewish life. However, none of them are written about such unique experiences like those of my family and I in Ukraine and Russia from the 1950’s up to 1972, as described in my memoir, “Counting My Miracles.” There are a number of themes covered here in my multi-generational family saga: inside stories of incredible corruption, a girl taking pride in her Judaism in the face of constant anti-Semitism, my sacrifices for becoming a concert pianist, a four year love affair with Natan Sharansky (the famous Russian dissident and Israeli politician), and my father’s thirty year determination to take us out of Russia. My father became a leader of the Refusenik Movement of the 1960’s. I left home at the age of fifteen, in secret from my father, to study concert piano in Moscow. Accepted into the prestigious Gnessin Music School in Moscow, I lived alone; first in an orphanage and then in a series of boarding houses to fulfill my dream. My bittersweet love story, which ends with my own immigration to Israel, provides the drama that pushes the narrative to its satisfying conclusion. Each very different chapter represents a certain stage in my family’s story, the first of which starts with my grandfather in the late nineteenth century. This is a strong story with universal themes of family, freedom, rights, and love, all of which should appeal to a wide audience. The story is about resilience, and I believe young people will be drawn to that. Students of history will be drawn to the story as it recounts pivotal moments in history from a first-person perspective including the death of Stalin, the post-Stalinist era, the Moscow Summit, the human rights movement in the Soviet Union of the 1960’s. Some readers may be interested in getting to know the young Natan, before Zionism and Human Activism changed his life and outlook, as he described in his book, “Fear No Evil.” My story can also be translated into various languages for Russian, Hebrew and Ukrainian readers. I can also narrate it for an audiobook version in these languages. In the appendix of this memoir are jokes recorded by my father and confiscated by the KGB. Although his joke book was never returned, he was able to recall many of the jokes (16 pages in total), covering political and social themes, which have never been published before. Thank you for taking the time to read this email. My memoir is completely written and edited. I have a cover and pictures for it. If interested, I also have a synopsis for my memoir. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. I found that about 1/3 of our books had no subject, and so spent a fairly long time correcting that. Subject would be an important field to search on! When Khazaria was destroyed Jews continued its usage as did Crimean Tatars for who it was a symbol of their inherited legitimacy to rule over Russia. ** ** Many conversos ended up in horrible situation as a result of their betrayal of the Jewish people. Re: [ha-Safran] Fw: Policy on donor books
From: "Robin I. Zeitz" Date: Thu, 9 Feb 2012 01:10:15 -0500 Joan: We have a written library policy to provide guidance on our collection and weeding policies, donations, circulation procedures, other administrative procedures. Regarding our donations policies, we've had varied success in effectively communicating them to our congregation, and one motivation to creating a written policy was to advise donors that potentially their donation would not be accepted and if accepted, that it could be removed from the collection. Relevant parts have been posted in our monthly bulletin as well as within our small library. The policy was developed using various online sources. Due to our small size, and volunteer-only staff, we've decided to generally discourage donation of any item without prior authorization from the Library Chair. Previously, we gave criteria -- oftentimes ignored -- for donations . At present, we encourage monetary donations to our dedicated Library Book Fund or purchase from our amazon.com wish lists. Our policy also indicates disposition of items and reserves the right to remove any item from our collection. We also created what we term a "Donation Registry" -- a computer record of all donated items which "periodically may be printed and available for public perusal. . .An attempt will be made to maintain an ongoing record of items donated that were subsequently removed from the collection." The introduction to this *Donation Registry* includes the following explanation: A primary purpose of this registry is to record and preserve many of the sentiments expressed on the bookplates of books and other media that were extant within our collection at the time we computerized our records. Donations include “gifts to the library” as well as those in celebration of a *simcha (*Bar/Bat Mitzvah, birth, wedding, birthday, anniversary, graduation, job promotion, retirement); to express appreciation for some event, deed, or service; or to honor a memory. We conceived of this registry to preserve the original intent of a donor, even if the item subsequently was removed from the collection (e.g. was lost, damaged, etc.) With respect to lost books and other fines, currently, we do not charge fees for overdue items. Overdue notices are given (by telephone, e-mail, and/or mail) if an item is overdue. Any item not returned following two overdue notices (or overdue more than 90 days) will be considered lost, and the borrower will be billed to replace it. Replacement fines are calculated using actual replacement cost although we've also considered charging a fixed amount to include an administrative charge. The fixed amount would vary by item, adult hardcover, adult paperback, child hardcover, child paperback, audiobook, Hebrew-language materials, other audiovisual items, etc. -- *Robin* Robin I. From: donal...@bu.edu Date: Wed, 08 Feb 2012 17:21:16 -0500 Hello- This is an interesting problem and I greatly share the worry that these vile publishers will profit from such purchases. Some suggestions: 1. Request the materials on interlibrary loan. Some academic libraries collect extremist literature as do a few public libraries. It is worthwhile to check WorldCat. 2. Find out if any of the materials have been digitized. Some racist organizations kvell (the proper word, no doubt!) at the prospect of offering their full-text publications on the web. Be careful, however, about searching for these sites on your computer because many websites track the IP address of readers. (http://www.wikihow.com/Surf-the-Web-Anonymously-with-Proxies) I hope Ha-Safran readers post other recommendations to this list. Re: [ha-Safran] Playing Israeli DVDs on Computers in US (Shaw, Zeitz)
From: Kimberley A Shaw Date: Thu, 16 Feb 2012 10:13:33 -0500 Hello Debbie: it's actually better to go and get an international (multiregion) standalone DVD player if you know you'll be playing region 2 items! Computers are set up so that you only have a (very) limited of number of times when it'll allow you to change DVD region from 1 to 2 and back (or to other regions). I learned this the hard way -- there is no way to override this built-in limitation. And other major film-making countries use region 2 format, including the UK, France, and Germany. Hundreds or possibly over a thousand books available. It can also function as a self-contained lending library. They don't have a library model yet (at least in Israel) but it is worth following, even if the titles are chiefly available in print the e-titles might offer an extra perk to customers. The basic idea of the project, based on Umberto Cassuto’s insight into the parallel development of Higher Criticism in Homeric and Biblical scholarship of the 19th century, is to review the past and the present of Biblical and Homeric Studies and the merits and shortcomings of Historical Criticism. During this three-year period, scholars of the Bible and Homer in Japan met with scholars invited from abroad to share the issue and discuss scholarly achievements from a fresh and critical point of view, conscious of clashes between the values of secularism and traditionalism in the sense of Wissenschaft in modern times. The English and Japanese papers collected in the volume discuss the methodological issues of Historical Criticism as it relates to Source Criticism, Textual Criticism, Historical Grammar, and Context. Re: [ha-Safran] LibraryThing for Synagogue/School libraries
From: Rachel Fischer Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2012 19:38:25 -0700 (PDT) LibraryThing.com automatically finds a record from an ISBN number or title. If the record is found in a library, the LibraryThing.com record will automatically include the Dewey and Library of Congress Numbers. If you want to add in a Weine Classification number there is a section for comments that you can place it in by hand. It will not find it automatically. If a book is rare and you need to enter it in by hand then it will not automatically have a classification number in the record. LibraryThing.com only works for books. Although, I guess there is a way to put in a title and create a record for a map or something else manually if you wanted to label it like that. However, the form really is only set up for books. You could maybe put something in the title section like "Title of Album" (CD) and in the author section "Name of Musician", if you wanted to make it work for you in that manner. You would have to enter all of that data in by hand though. There is a place for multiple copies in the form. It will only upload one record. You can then look through your records to see what you have in multiple copies and change copies to the amount that you have in the collection. The amount of items that you can input per hour differs depending on how you input the records. If you can export your database to a .txt or .doc format, then you can upload it into librarything.com. It will recognize books by a valid ISBN and find them if they are in another library or in amazon.com and create a record from that list. You can enter in thousands at a time. It can take a couple of hours for the program to process the records if they are really busy. It will tell you how long it will take. If an item does not have an ISBN or the current and more common ISBN is different then librarything.com will not be able to find that record. You will have to go through the list of authors that it did find and match to your record. Then you need to enter all the other records in manually. It does not take to long if you can find it by title and author. However, sometimes you can not find it if it is rare or you have to transliterate hebrew and then it needs to be entered in manually. You do need to double check the records because some people have entered them in manually before you and you will need to fix mistakes, like adding in the first name if there is only a last name, or switching the order of the first or last name. When you enter books in manually it takes up as much time as typing it in would. It is definitely something that volunteers can help with. You would need to set it up for them and give them instruction. You should get to know how librarything.com works. You might want to think of how you want to add collections to your catalog before you begin, like making a label for the Juvenile Collection, YA Collection, Adult Collection, and Reference Collection. You also need to tag all books by hand because it does not have subject heading in it automatically. You can come up with a guide for a volunteer on how to tag the books so that it is uniform. The program is case sensitive so fiction and Fiction become two separate tags and you will need to decide on only using one or the other. I have noticed that you do not need to tag the name of a series, if it has won an award, or what region of the country it is a part of if the record is already in there. If you click on statistics you can see that option has already been done for you automatically. You can see what I have been doing with tagging and separating the collections in the catalog that I am working on at: http://www.librarything.com/profile/OakParkTemple You can see how I added to the profile that the member needs to talk to a volunteer to find out how to locate the book on the shelf, because it has been classified with the Weine Classification number. Re: [ha-Safran] LibraryThing for Synagogue/School libraries
From: Karen Cheyney Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2012 23:38:30 + (UTC) I have a library that is neither classified nor catalogued. Can I use Library Thing to classify with the Weine system by "grabbing" other libraries' data? I have been doing original cataloguing with CROSS (Church, Religious Organizations, Synagogue Software), which has been useful up to now, but I need to change. Does Library Thing work for multiple formats, games, puzzles, maps, etc.? Can I do multiple copies showing Teachers' Resources? I have about 4000 items. How many items can you enter in an hour? Can volunteers do much of the work? Thanks for any suggestions. [ha-Safran] News from the Library of Congress
http://www.loc.gov/today/pr/2012/12-120.html June 14, 2012Library of Congress to Mark Centennial of Hebraic Collection With Publication, Exhibition A century ago, New York philanthropist Jacob H. Schiff purchased an initial collection of nearly 10,000 Hebrew books and pamphlets from bibliophile and book dealer Ephraim Deinard for the Library of Congress. This gift formed the nucleus of what is today one of the world’s greatest collections of Hebraic materials and Judaica, comprising some 200,000 items. The Library is celebrating the centennial of its Hebraic Collection with the publication this month of "Perspectives on the Hebraic Book: The Myron M. Weinstein Memorial Lectures at the Library of Congress" and an exhibition titled "Words Like Sapphires: 100 Years of Hebraica at the Library of Congress, 1912-2012." "Perspectives on the Hebraic Book" comprises the texts of the Myron M. Weinstein Memorial Lectures on the Hebraic Book, which were delivered annually from 2000-2009 at the Library of Congress. The compilation is edited by Peggy K. Pearlstein, head of the Hebraic Section in the Library’s African and Middle Eastern Division. The broad scope of the lectures was designed to reflect the wide-ranging scholarly interests of Myron M. Weinstein (1927-1998), who served his 29-year career at the Library of Congress in the Hebraic Section, which he headed from 1980 until his retirement in 1984. The lecture series and its publication in book form were made possible by Weinstein’s sisters, Muriel Sterne and the late Helen Avati, with additional support from Project Judaica Trust Fund. Each chapter analyzes unique perspectives on the Hebrew manuscript and book. Joseph R. Hacker, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, discusses the printing of Hebrew books in the 16th-century Ottoman Empire. Grace Cohen Grossman, Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, examines 18th- and 19th- century Hebrew prayer broadsides. Bernard Dov Cooperman, University of Maryland, offers a view of the impact of printing on Italian Jewish piety. Jonathan D. Sarna, Brandeis University, chronicles the Jewish book in America. Zachary M. Baker, Stanford University, reflects on the Yiddish theater and its legacy. Marsha L. Rozenblitt, University of Maryland, explores 19th-century Viennese Jewry through the Isak Noa Mannheimer prayer book. Gershon Greenberg, American University, investigates the struggles of Hasidic religious thinkers to find a response to the Holocaust. Evelyn M. Cohen, an independent scholar, compares two 15th-century Joel ben Simeon manuscripts. Doris A. Hamburg, National Archives and Records Administration, describes the conservation of the 1478 Joel ben Simeon manuscript known as "The Washington Haggadah," which is housed in the Library of Congress. The rare item was rebound by the Library of Congress before its display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art last spring. "Perspectives on the Hebraic Book: The Myron M. Weinstein Memorial Lectures at the Library of Congress," a 240-page softcover book with 30 illustrations, is available for $35 in the Library of Congress Shop, 10 First St. S.E., Washington, D.C. 20540-4985. Credit-card orders are taken at (888) 682-3557, or shop on the Internet at www.loc.gov/shop. "Words Like Sapphires: 100 Years of Hebraica at the Library of Congress, 1912-2012," will be on view *Oct. 25, 2012, through March 16, 2013*, in the South Gallery of the Thomas Jefferson Building at 10 First Street S.E., Washington, D.C. The exhibition, made possible by generous support from the Abby and Emily Rapoport Trust Fund at the Library of Congress, will feature more than 60 items dating from the 7th century through the present. Items from 15 countries in nine languages include Hebrew manuscripts, incunabula (pre-1501 books), torah scrolls, Yiddish sheet music and contemporary limited edition artists’ books. More than half of the items in the exhibition have never been displayed. The Hebraica publication and exhibition are part of the Library’s "Celebration of the Book," which includes an exhibition, *June 25 through Sept. 29*, on "Books That Shaped America" and a series of programs, symposia and other events that explore the important and varied ways that books influence our lives. Date: Mon, Dec 3, 2012 at 2:16 PM Subject: Invitation to Living History: Rudi Rosenfeld and Moshe Yassur on Yiddish Theatre The Martin E. Segal Theatre Center cordially invites you to: - Living History: Rudi Rosenfeld and Moshe Yassur on Yiddish Theatre Monday, December 10, 6:30 pm, Proshansky Auditorium, The Graduate Center, CUNY, 365 Fifth Avenue (at 34th Street), NYC. FREE! First come, first served The Martin E. Segal Center welcomes living legend Rudi Rosenfeld - the last of his generation of Yiddish-speaking actors in the storied Romanian Yiddish theatre - in conversation with noted Romanian Yiddish theatre director, Moshe Yassur. Rosenfeld and Yassur will reflect on the past, present, and future of Yiddish theatre in Romania and around the world with a panel of artists and theatre historians. Vibrant from the late nineteenth century onwards, but banned during World War II, Yiddish-language theatre in Romania was consecrated when the new Communist government established the world's first state-operated Yiddish theatre in Bucharest in 1948. This theatre has been in continuous operation ever since, and now features primarily non-Jewish Romanian actors performing in Yiddish. We hope that you can attend and spread the word. Martin E. [ha-Safran] Penn Libraries Receive $8.5 Million Gift of the Kaplan Collection of Early American Judaica
a unique opportunity to rethink many assumptions that we have about American Jewish history, assumptions we’ve been unable to test because sources like these have been in private hands and yet to be examined,” explained Arthur Kiron, Schottenstein-Jesselson Curator of Judaica Collections at Penn Libraries and Adjunct Assistant Professor of History. Penn Libraries will make part of the Kaplan Collection available on long-term loan to the National Museum of American Jewish History (NMAJH). Through this endeavor, first envisioned by Arnold Kaplan, the NMAJH and the Penn Libraries have embarked upon a unique partnership to enhance public access to the Kaplan Collection. “Generations of scholars will be grateful to the Kaplans for their diligence in amassing this Collection, and for their generosity in presenting it to Penn,” said Carton Rogers, Penn Vice Provost and Director of Libraries. “It is an added benefit of the Kaplan’s gift that it creates an important new alliance between research and cultural organizations in this region, Penn and the NMAJH.” Every item in the Collection will be digitally reproduced and made available online to scholars and students. Penn Libraries will hold an exhibition in January 2014 in its new Special Collections Center with highlights from the Kaplan Collection on view, accompanied by an exhibition catalog with essays by leading scholars in the field. # # # __ Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) == Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: Hasafran@lists.service.ohio-state.edu To join Ha-Safran, update or change your subscription, etc. - click here: https://lists.service.ohio-state.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran Questions, problems, complaints, compliments send to: galro...@osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.service.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html Earlier Listserver: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org -- Hasafran mailing list Hasafran@lists.service.ohio-state.edu https://lists.service.ohio-state.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran
[ha-Safran] Jewish Astrolabes
Astrolabes (From Greek astro=star, labos=take) are the instruments that were used in the Middle Ages to observe the position of celestial bodies, and were the primary navigational tool before the invention of the sextant. Levi ben Gershom (1288-1344), also called RALBAG, or Gersonides in Latin, invented an astrolabe which he called Jacob’s Staff, or, The Revealer of Profundities. He described his invention in his famous book, *Milhamot ha-Shem *(Wars of the Lord):”We can use this instrument for accurate observation of the altitude of the Sun, Moon, or any other star that is seen on the meridian…We call this instrument The Revealer of Profundities, for with it many profundities in this science can be verified, with the help of God.” Gersonides’ book was soon translated into Latin, and became an essential navigational tool for Christopher Columbus, as well as all other great discoverers of the early modern period. Below is a description of a project to document all existing Jewish astrolabes. The project is being undertaken by the Warburg Institute of the University of London. -- I am pleased to send you the url of a poster illustrating the project on Astrolabes in Medieval Jewish Society ( * http://warburg.sas.ac.uk/mnemosyne/astrolabes_poster.pdf*<http://warburg.sas.ac.uk/mnemosyne/astrolabes_poster.pdf>). This is an AHRC research project based at the Warburg Institute (University of London) and with the collaboration of the Museum of the History of Science (Oxford University): *http://warburg.sas.ac.uk/research/projects/jewish-astrolabes*<http://warburg.sas.ac.uk/research/projects/jewish-astrolabes> . We are exploring the impact that astrolabes and manuscripts on the use and construction of astrolabes had in medieval Jewish culture. We are dealing with about 140 Hebrew manuscripts collected from all around the world and about twenty instruments with Hebrew inscriptions or signs of Jewish ownership and use (including instruments in the Collection of the Society of Antiquaries, the Khalili Collection, the British Museum and the Science Museum in London; the Deutsche Staatsbibliothek in Berlin; the Deutsche Museum, Munich; the Adler Planetarium, Chicago; the National Museum of American History, Washington; the Jagellonian Library, Cracow; the Museum of Islamic Art, Cairo and the Biblioteca Comunale, Palermo). It goes without saying that this is groundbreaking research in the field of Jewish studies and in the field of the history of science that we hope is going to enlarge and enrich our understanding of medieval Jewish culture. There is also a blog to keep post followers of any event and news related to the project (*http://blogs.mhs.ox.ac.uk/hebrew-astrolabes/*<http://blogs.mhs.ox.ac.uk/hebrew-astrolabes/> ). We would appreciate any assistance in alerting our attention to astrolabes that are not on our list, and in finding the following instruments that are essential for our research (the serial numbers of David King’s inventory of astrolabes are given): 1– Private astrolabe (last owner in Morocco, #1122) An astrolabe by Ya'qub ibn Musa Tapiero supposedly dated 716 H (but more probably 1016 H). Morocco, private collection. Formerly in the Duval Collection (according to Mayer). Brass. Diameter unknown. Signed and dated. Unpublished. Brief description (Colin). This astrolabe is signed by a Jewish astrolabist. __ Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) == Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: Hasafran@lists.service.ohio-state.edu To join Ha-Safran, update or change your subscription, etc. - click here: https://lists.service.ohio-state.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran Questions, problems, complaints, compliments send to: galro...@osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.service.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html Earlier Listserver: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org -- Hasafran mailing list Hasafran@lists.service.ohio-state.edu https://lists.service.ohio-state.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran

[ha-Safran] World War 1 Project
To whom it may concern: I write you this letter in hopes you can help me or direct toward the right persons or resources. I apologize in advance if I duplicated addresses, points of contact or have the wrong persons. I am the point of contact here in Brooklyn, NY US for a young German- jewish student in Germany who, on her own accord and time, volunteered and is tasked with organizing a museum project/exhibition dedicated to honor the memory of Jewish German-born soldiers who served in the great war of World War 1. (NOTE: Please see text below for greater description) As it is extremely difficult to find information about WW1 and the involvement of German Jews, I appeal to organizations around the world for their help. Julia is specifically looking for items (photos, military documents, passes, awards, uniforms, military clothing, books, religious items, recordings, etc) that could be put on display in this museum exhibition. We also ask that any reproductions or items used would be granted permission to be put on display. Availability for funds are extremely limited as no budget was approved to help with this project, I thus humbly and respectfully request your help in helping make this project a fantastic one. Please help me honor the Jews during that time and keep their history alive. They fought so valiantly and were really a part of history as many have forgotten and would like to deny their contributions. Any help would greatly be appreciated. I can be available to meet in person or help with any work should you be limited in your staff. Thank you again V/R, Eugene Gross 718-851-7373 geno...@gmail.com or Julia Meyer julia100...@googlemail.com *German Sewish Soldiers in World War 1* World War 1 is considered as the forgotten war, hence most people don't know anymore what actually happened around that time. Since german jewish history is mainly focussed on the Holocaust, people forgot that german jewish soldiers fought with for germany in World War 1 before. This project shall deliver results about the jewish people, their attitude toward germany, the war and their role in german society before and during World War 1. This project is run by the Otto-von-Guericke Universität Magdeburg and Dr. Monika Gibas who does research on german jewish history from the middle ages to contemporary history. Due to the long time distance, it's hard to find pictures of german jewish soldiers and we'd appreciate your help in finding more information, especially photos of jewish soldiers in uniform or military passes, iron crosses, military awards and any other physical memorabilia. The project leads to an exhibition in which jewish soldiers will have a special place in the history of World War 1. The exhibition is going to start in 2014 to honor the 100th anniversary of World War 1. My contact information is Julia Meyer, julia100...@googlemail.com. Thank you for your help and support in honoring the Jewish people and their phenomenal history. __ Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) == Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: Hasafran@lists.service.ohio-state.edu To join Ha-Safran, update or change your subscription, etc. - click here: https://lists.service.ohio-state.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran Questions, problems, complaints, compliments send to: galro...@osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.service.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html Earlier Listserver: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org -- Hasafran mailing list Hasafran@lists.service.ohio-state.edu https://lists.service.ohio-state.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran

[ha-Safran] "Preserving our Past for the Future”.
*From:* Rachel Bortnick [mailto:bortnic...@sbcglobal.net] *Sent:* Tuesday, August 27, 2013 11:05 AMDear Friends, ** The Quincentennial Foundation Jewish Museum of Istanbul – Turkey is launching its new campaign: “Preserving our Past for the Future”. Our aim is to build a virtual museum/library by digitally archiving the records of the Turkish Jewish Community: photographs, video and audio recordings, documents, objects and visuals. Examples of such records could be of: - Family photographs & documents, - Family gatherings, religious ceremonies, - Social gatherings, conferences, plays, musicals, shows, folk dancing and similar events by the social & culture clubs As it is very important to preserve these records, our officials can present vouchers upon receipt of a record and return to the owner the original after making a digital copy. If you are willing to donate your original record (an objet, a document) to the museum, we will make certain that viewers will know it has been donated by the owner. If you already have some digital records we will be happy to receive them over the Internet, to the following address: ni...@muze500.com For more detailed information and for questions you can write to : Mrs. Nisya Allövi Tel: +90 (212) 292 63 33 - 34 Fax: +90 (212) 244 44 74 E-mail : ni...@muze500.com Address: JEWISH MUSEUM OF ISTANBUL KARAKOY MEYDANI, PERCEMLI SOK. [ha-Safran] Fwd:[archives] IMT at Nuremberg documents available online
From: Betsy Pittman [betsy.pitt...@lib.uconn.edu] Sent: Thursday, November 14, 2013 8:57 AM To: Archives & Archivists (A&A) List Subject: [archives] IMT at Nuremberg documents available online Archives & Special Collections is pleased to announce the online availability of the papers associated with the trial of the Nazi major war criminals found in the Senator Thomas J. Dodd Papers. Dodd served as Executive Trial Counsel and supervisor of the U.S. prosecution team at the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg from July 1945 through October 1946, where he shaped many of the strategies and policies through which this unprecedented trial took place. Representing a small proportion of his entire collection housed at the Archives & Special Collections at the University of Connecticut, Dodd’s Nuremberg papers contain documentation relating to the proceedings of the Nuremberg Trials that are available nowhere else, such as hand annotated drafts of trial briefs and annotated translations of German documents. Found in Series VII of the Thomas J. Dodd Papers, the documents have been heavily used by scholars from around the world since they were opened to the public in 1997. The nearly 50,000 pages of documents in the Nuremberg papers will be digitized over the next two years and made available through the Connecticut Digital Archive, a joint program of the UConn Libraries and the Connecticut State Library. [ha-Safran] Jews and comics
Date:Wed, 20 Nov 2013 16:01:17 +0200 From:Katherine Aron-Beller Subject: Workshop: Comics and Jewish Studies at Columbia in January "TENT: Comics" will explore the role that Jews have played in the development of comic strips, comic books, and graphic novels, from their invention to the present. A group of fans, scholars, and emerging artists and writers in the field will gather to explore the richness of contemporary comics and the current state of the industry. Participants will read classic comic strips and comic books, as well as rare and archival examples, and discover the unsung Jewish artists and entrepreneurs who helped to shape the form of the serialized comic book and innovated in the development of the graphic novel. Meeting some of the leading contemporary creators of comics and graphic novels, we will consider how this art form has become a major medium for expressions of religious, ethnic, and national identities. Tent: Comics at the Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies, New York City January 19-26, 2014 *If required, lodging will be provided; most meals will be provided. The following message was forwarded to me. Can someone help? In the current Harvard Alumni magazine there is in inquiry that prompts me to write. [ha-Safran] Nili Sharon Adler
From: NAPH Date: Tue, Feb 25, 2014 at 11:00 PM Subject: NAPHNET: Nili Sharon Adler After a long struggle with her illness Nili passed away earlier today. While I do not have funeral details at this point I thought you would all want to know and I will pass along any information as soon as I receive word. Down to the end Nili continued to teach and encourage others to learn the language that she loved. I have never known anyone more passionate and devoted to her work, who cherished every moment with her students and advocating for the Hebrew language - to say she will be sorely missed by all who knew and worked with her would be a tremendous understatement. The number of students and colleagues is certainly greater than those included on this message, so please forward the information to those who would want to know. [ha-Safran] New Book: The Journals of the Haskalah in mid-19th cent.
[image: http://www.magnes-press.com/NetisUtils/srvrutil_getImg.aspx?unitId=4843&size=orig]The Journals of the Haskalah In mid-Nineteenth Century Hehalutz (1852-1889); Bikurim (1864-1865): *By Moshe Pelli <http://www.magnes-press.com/Authors/Moshe+Pelli.aspx?name=Moshe+Pelli>* This is the fifth book in the series of monographs and annotated indices on periodicals of the Haskalah. It covers two major Hebrew periodicals *Hehalutz *(1852–1889) and* Bikurim *(1864–1865), and addresses major developments in the history of the Hebrew Haskalah in mid-century: the emergence of radical Haskalah in Galicia which found its mouthpiece in *Hehalutz*, and the contribution of its prolific editor, Joshua Heschel Schorr, who publishing 13 volumes of his journal. *Bikurim*, published in two volumes, was edited by Naphtali Keller, and represented the moderate Haskalah and Hochmat Israel (the scholarly study of Judaism). The Indices to the two journals published in this book are cross-referenced, annotated, Alphabetized, and author-and-subject listed. They cover all articles, essays, and scholarly studies on a variety of topics in Jewish Studies, such as Biblical and Talmudic criticism and commentary, questions regarding the Halachah (the religious code), and studies on the Hebrew language, Jewish history, and Jewish education. They also cite newly discovered medieval Hebrew manuscripts, their critique and studies of their authors. Also included are various genres in *belles lettres*: poems, stories, satires, biographies, and miscellaneous writings such as editorial comments and announcements. All these subjects are discussed and analyzed in the monographs of the two journals. Now, upon their publication, the annotated indices should serve as a reliable reference tool for viewing and reviewing the major topics and issues that occupied the minds of the editors and the writers of these journals in Galicia and elsewhere in Europe in mid-19th century. Readers may now examine the scope and the character of the material published in these journals*. *Likewise, it is now convenient to assess the contribution of participating scholars, authors, and poets, to the Haskalah literature, and to explore their stand on various scholarly or Haskalah-related matters. [ha-Safran] Position Available: Middle East and Islamic Studies Librarian, Duke University
Duke University Libraries seeks an engaged and knowledgeable librarian for Middle East and Islamic Studies. Scholars of the Middle East and/or librarians fulfilling the qualifications who are interested in supporting the research and teaching mission of Duke University are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate should possess an understanding of research and teaching in Middle East and Islamic Studies and should be familiar with humanities and social science research and teaching methods. The subject specialist provides advanced reference and bibliographic assistance, and will be expected to develop online services and resources, including research guides and digital collections, and to work with the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library on providing access to and facilitating the use of materials on the Middle East. The position is in a highly collaborative and innovative department of ten librarians who partner with members of the Duke community to support pioneering research and teaching in and about countries outside the United States. Interdisciplinary, cultural studies-inflected research and teaching activities which synthesize social science and humanities methodologies have informed the development of Duke University Libraries’ Middle East collection over the past fifteen years. Supported by an acquisitions budget of about $200,000 (not including grants and one-time funding), Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish holdings have grown exponentially, mirroring the rising enrollments in Middle East-related language classes and increased linguistic diversity of FLAS-funded graduate student research. Expanded academic interest in the region across academic disciplines has guided thematically broad collecting in humanities and social science fields, not just of printed materials, but also of films, online resources, and rare historical source materials. Duke works closely with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in building research-level collections to support a joint NRC Title VI center. [ha-Safran] New book on Janusz Korczak.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (New York, NY, December 31, 2015) - Hailed by Pope John Paul II and strongly influential in the United Nations adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Rights of the Child, this doctor/educator/author’s brilliant life, tragic ending in the Holocaust and the enduring legacy of his ideas are vividly presented in Janusz Korczak: Sculptor of Children’s Souls (Child Development Research & The Wordsmithy, LLC: $18.95, 234 pp., May, 2015, ISBN: 978-1-935110-19-4). Although a bachelor with no children of his own, Korczak was a father to thousands of children via his stewardship of both a unique Jewish orphanage (Dom Sierot) and simultaneously a Catholic one (Nasz Dom) in early 20th Century Poland. Although he, his staff and his children were marched to their eventual death at Treblinka, the journey of his humanistic ideas has continued to march onwards. An educator for over 40 years in the United States and Israel, Marcia Talmage Schneider has not only written a biography of Korczak (already the subject of many works and an award-winning film), but has also uniquely traced his legacy through first-hand interviews with 10 graduates of his Dom Sierot orphanage. His “children”, who range from photographers and artists to psychologists and educators, illustrate the lasting effects of Korczak’s philosophy and personality decades later. What was it that made Korczak’s ideas so revolutionary? Talmage Schneider notes: “Heading the orphanage from 1912 to his end in 1942, Korczak’s methods emphasized each child’s right to respect by creating a democracy of children, for children and by children.” Unlike similar institutions of the time, his was self- governed by a Court of Justice comprised of Korczak, his staff (including the janitor!), and the children themselves; rules of responsibilities for oneself and others; a newspaper written by the children, plus other humane ideas emanating from his own magical personality, partially forged by his experiences in two wars that showed him the effects of violence on children. In his classic book “To Love A Child” (1919), Korczak wrote of children: “Give them the conditions for better development so that they can grow up to be adults who will bring a better future to the world.” This is why Pope John Paul II cited him as “a symbol of true religion and true morality” and why Poland declared 2012 The Year of Janus Korczak, marking the 70th Anniversary of his death and the 100th Anniversary of the founding of Dom Sierot. In a current movement to get Korczak’s ideas better known in Canada and to improve its welfare system, Irwin Elman, Ontario’s Provincial Advocate for Children and Youth, recently stated on CBC Radio’s “The Current” that “It’s possible...you can create the conditions and legislate the conditions where love can flourish.” As an innovative pediatrician, educator, radio personality and author (one of whose magical children’s books – Kaytek, the Wizard - anticipated the Harry Potter series), Korczak led the way with his loving and visionary methods. “Perhaps,” says Talmage Schneider, “his methods would greatly benefit the world today.” For further information, interviews, speaking engagements: Contact: Marcia Talmage Schneider 212- 662-7006 cell 347-380-3375 mahry...@verizon.net __ Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) == Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: hasaf...@lists.service.ohio-state.edu To join Ha-Safran, update or change your subscription, etc. - click here: https://lists.service.ohio-state.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran Questions, problems, complaints, compliments send to: galro...@osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.service.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html Earlier Listserver: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org -- Hasafran mailing list Hasafran@lists.osu.edu https://lists.osu.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran

[ha-Safran] JDC Archives online
We are writing to Judaica/Jewish Studies librarians with an update on our digitization activity. The JDC Archives holds the institutional records of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee since its founding in 1914. Given the nature of JDC’s work and the role it has played over more than a century of activity, these collections are among the most significant in the world for the study of modern Jewish history. Our online collections database now has more than 2.6 million pages of documents available. These are fully searchable, with pdfs of the individual documents, and open to scholars, students, and the general public at http://search.archives.jdc.org. Online finding aids for the collections are available at http://archives.jdc.org/explore-the-archives/using-the-archives.html. This database also includes more than 67,000 digitized photographs that document JDC’s activity around the world throughout the twentieth century, not only in Europe and Israel but also in the Middle East and North Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Asia. Our Names Index <http://archives.jdc.org/sharedlegacy/search-names/> holds more than 500,000 names and is a major source of information for genealogists and family historians. Search results include links to the digitized source documents—index cards, lists, remittances, and others—from which the names were drawn. The JDC Archives website at http://archives.jdc.org includes curated exhibits, photo galleries, topic guides for educators, and an interactive timeline of JDC history. You will also find guidance on how to search the collections, including video tutorials. We encourage you to include the JDC Archives in lists of online resources at your institution’s library and to direct faculty and students alike to this historical treasure! If you will be attending this year’s AJL Conference in Charleston (June 19-22), you can learn more about us. JDC Global Archives Director Linda Levi will be giving a presentation on “Treasures of the JDC Archives & Resources for Librarians.” We hope you will join us at that session.
