*NOTE: This email originated outside HUC.EDU *
Hi friends,

I have a patron who is looking for a translation of the Reform bar mitzvah
service in German, for relatives who will be streaming her son's service in
Germany.

She may also need Serbian too.

Readings for service
Bo (Exodus 11:1-3, 4-7, 8-10)
Jeremiah 46:27-28
Exodus 12:21-23, 24-28, 29-32
Jeremiah 46:13-16

If you have any leads, please let me know. If it doesn't already exist, I think
she may also be willing to engage a translator.

Many, many thanks.

[ha-Safran] good and welfare

2021-12-02 Thread Stahl, Sheryl via Hasafran
Hi all,

I wanted to let you know that as Jan. 14, 2022, I will no longer be at Hebrew
Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. I've decided it is time for a
change for me and I'm trying to figure out my next adventure. After working for
the library for pretty much all of my adult life, it is hard to leave. I have
an amazing group of friends and colleagues at the college.

I'm planning on staying active in AJL so you'll keep hearing from me. I don't
yet know the plan for replacing me.

All the best,

Cataloging Bulletin

*NOTE: This email originated outside HUC.EDU *

Apologies for cross-postings...

Do you have experience with library technical services in relation to religious
studies and theological materials? Do you want to become involved in library
publishing? Come work with us! The Theology Cataloging Bulletin
(TCB) seeks to fill a vacancy on the editorial board. Soon to be known as TCB:
Technical Services in Religion and Theology, TCB is a quarterly publication of
Atla Open Press. Currently, TCB contains information about new and changed
Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and Library of Congress
Classification (LCC) numbers compiled from the Library of Congress's monthly
lists. It also includes announcements about upcoming training opportunities and
a bibliography of recently published articles, as well as other information of
interest to religion and theology catalogers. Beginning in January 2022, TCB
will expand its coverage to include additional content on acquisitions,
collection management, and other areas of technical services. Additionally, a
new section will be introduced that offers reviews of open source and
proprietary software used in library technical services.

Editors work collaboratively with the Editor in Chief to produce four issues
each year, presently January, April, August, and October. The position is
appointed by the Atla Executive Director for a three-year term, with
reappointment possible.

To view the full position description for the Editor as well as for
instructions to apply, please visit the Atla Service Opportunities
Board.

2020-08-20 Thread Stahl, Sheryl via Hasafran
Hi, my three year old niece has had Rekhov Shumshum on constant rotation. Her
parents are desperate for other similar videos. Does anyone know of Hebrew

[ha-Safran] Have you ever been lost or frustrated by the AJL website?

2020-07-29 Thread Stahl, Sheryl via Hasafran
The AJL Council has approved a new committee to investigate re-designing our
website.

I would like to have a people with varying AJL experiences. So far we have a
few long time RAS members, so I would love to add some SSCPL members and some
newish AJL members.

The time commitment would be for one initial meeting to make a list of our
website needs and priorities. Then some independent work exploring which
options might work for us. There might be additional meetings to discuss layout
and design issues.

So, if you are an AJL MEMBER who would like to have a hand in making our
website better and more functional, please email me at
webmas...@jewishlibraries.org with a couple of words about yourself. (No web
design experience required)

webinar, March 10, 2020

You are invited to join us on March 10 at 1 p.m. CST for “Telling Your Story:
Articulating Your Value as a Technical Services Librarian” webinar.

See the Atla website to register:
https://www.atla.com/event/telling-your-story-webinar/

If you can translate your skills and achievements so others see their value and
impact, everyone wins.

Whether justifying the need to fill an open position, writing a tenure or
promotion narrative, or even carrying on a conversation with a colleague,
librarians who work in Technical Services are often challenged to articulate
what they do and the value it brings to the institution they serve.

In this webinar we will discuss:

  * The challenge of defining value in the context of technical services
  * Assessment measures that determine the impact of technical services
“products” on users
  * Connecting the impact of technical services to the mission of the
institution
  * Developing a 30-second elevator speech to explain the value of technical
services to those outside the library

This webinar will be led by Leslie Engelson, Metadata Librarian, Murray State
University, and Christina Torbert, Head of Continuing Resources and
Acquisitions, University of Mississippi.

[ha-Safran] Announcement of the award winners for the AJL Fiction Award

2020-01-27 Thread Stahl, Sheryl via Hasafran
It seems like our Award announcement got lost in the YIVO announcement. So here
goes again …

The winners of this year's award are:

Goldie Goldbloom, On Division. Farrar, Straus and Giroux (winner)
Julie Orringer, The Flight Portfolio. Knopf (honor book)

Thanks to all the committee members (Rachel Kamin, Merrily Hart, Laura
Schutzman, and Sheryl Stahl) for all their reading and thoughtful consideration
of many books. We are hoping that both Goldbloom and Orringer will be at the
convention in Evanston in June where you can hear them speak about their books.
All the committee members will be at the conference and there will be a panel
presentation about recent and forthcoming adult Jewish fiction. We also plan to
hold a book discussion for On Division during breakfast on Wednesday morning of
the conference.

My term will end at the conference; Laura Schutzman is the incoming chairperson.

Besides this list serve,
how do all of you in libraries find out about new releases? How do you decided
what to buy? Is it based on reviews? Needs on your shelves? ( Of course budget)
but are are there annual Jewish book fairs- Besides the Jewish book council?
Are there catalogues? I’m wondering what the best way for independent authors
to let folks know of their offerings in the age of self- publishing?

I’ve been approached by a marketing company, but I have no idea if thats the
best way to get it to my market. Are there Jewish book marketing companies -
besides Berhman and Kar-ben who do their own….?

Any advice appreaciated!

Thank you to Rachel for suggesting the book The Best Place on Earth. I like it

Subject: [ha-Safran] Online resources for teens

Dear Hasafranim,

A month ago, I taught our post bnai-mitzvah high school class how to find book
resources for lifecycle events and issues, which is the focus this year. Now I
have them again this Sunday and I'd like to show them online resources.

What in your opinion are the most solid, trustworthy sites -- good for teens --
to conduct research on birth, death, bnai mitzvah, marriage, etc? I know of a
few, certainly not all.

Hi
I think it is a good idea to continue the virtual AJL Reads and the conference
calls were fine. In terms of the kind of material, I think a mix of content
including librarianship titles and fiction could be good. The subject matter
should engender a solid discussion.

Hi AJL-ers.

Last year AJL had a virtual book club called AJL READS. Every few months we had
a conference call to discuss a Jewish novel or memoir. These calls attracted
just a handful of people each time, but they enjoyed it. In June at the AJL
Conference in Charleston we had a live discussion of a librarianship nonfiction
title. We got a good crowd and had a lively discussion.

The goal of AJL READS was to find a way for AJL members to connect and network
outside of conference time.

So my question for you is: would you like to continue the virtual book club?
Would you prefer librarianship books over fiction? Would you prefer a
discussion via Hasafran/Facebook that you can participate in on your own
schedule or a conference call scheduled at a specific time?

Please let me know your thoughts. If there is continuing interest, I will start
planning for a new year of AJL READS!

Re: [ha-Safran] Classics vs. New Books

2016-07-22 Thread Stahl, Sheryl
One of kid's teachers recommended that they read 20 pages of a book and if they
weren't "caught" to put it down. (for pleasure reading obviously) So I tried
this out at home when I recommended books to them - and it worked well. One of
the books I had the hardest time convincing my daughter to start was the
"Confessions of a closet Catholic" but then I had the hardest time getting her
to put it down for meals.

Subject: Re: [ha-Safran] Classics vs. New Books

I look forward to seeing what books are on people's lists, but this question
opens the door to a way of thinking when "recommending" books to kids
altogether.

At this time, when leisure time is so much about tech "devices", I believe it's
most important to get kids to think of reading as something they want to do, a
delicious way to spend time. When students are brought into my library by
parents or teachers and told "you'll really like this book"... "this is a great
book"... I just watch the kids go blank. They've heard it before, they don't
believe it or don't care. (and of course they'd rather turn to their device.)

So... I have a standard line that I say to the children I deal with (K-6):
"Look at the books in this section and see what appeals to you based on the
cover - it's up to you; what looks good? Read the first page. If you're
interested enough to turn the page you'll probably like the book! If it's
already boring, then put it back and keep looking. And I'm right here if you
need help with a word or have a question." Kids are bossed-around all the
time; I want to validate their right to make a choice in the library, and also
be seen as sympathetic. (Once you have their trust, you can recommend the good
ones!)

(Boys often need more guidance, and I've had great success with the Rabbi
Harvey series as gateway-books for non-readers.)

So Pnina Moed Kass (author of STBA winner Real Time, 2004) sometimes sends me
interesting librarianship articles, and she just sent this one from The
Guardian newspaper in England about classics vs new books for kids.

https://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2016/jul/13/stop-pushing-the-same-classic-books-on-children-and-trust-modern-writing?CMP=share_btn_link

Seems like when asked about "must read books" adults tend to answer with their
own out-of-date favorites. They are not lucky like us librarians, they haven't
read the more recent kidlit.

So this made me wonder - within the genre of Jewish kidlit, what are your top
ten classics and what are your top ten "must read books" that were published
more recently (say within the last 10 years or so)?

Just wondering...

Dear Safrinim,

We meant to hold a meeting of AJL READS on Sunday to discuss the book, The
English Spy by Daniel Silva. Embarrassingly, both Debbie Feder and myself (the
discussion leaders) got distracted and forgot to call in! Also embarrassingly,
only two members showed up for the book club, both of whom were members of the
AJL board.

Maybe the failed meeting was a blessing in disguise, because it's causing me to
re-examine what we are doing and to ask for YOUR feedback.

Our goal with the book club was to give members a way to connect outside of
conference time, to build AJL's sense of community and exchange of ideas. But
turnout has been low, and the folks who call in are mostly "the usual suspects"
- people who are already somewhat involved in AJL activities. How can we make
it more interesting, more worthwhile, and easier for people to participate in?

We have been holding live discussions at 9pm eastern on a Sunday night. Is this
a bad time? Should we hold discussions by email or in some other way that
doesn't require showing up at a particular time?

In June at the conference in Charleston we will be discussing a librarianship
book, Biblio Tech: Why Libraries Matter More Than Ever in the Age of Google by
John Palfrey. Would librarianship books be of more interest to you than
fiction, generally speaking?

We've been doing our discussions by conference call. We considered methods like
Google Hangouts or Facebook but wanted to avoid making participants sign into
anything. What technique do YOU prefer for having a long distance book
discussion?

I would really value your feedback, everyone! Please email me at
he...@cbiboca.org.

Thanks,
Heidi Estrin

Hi all,

Just a reminder that when we moved to the new website, the user names were all
changed. You should be able to login with your first initial last name (ex.
mine would be sstahl) or with the email in your record. The passwords were also
reset.

If you’ve forgotten (or didn’t know) your password, you can go to the login
screen and click on the “forgot username/password” link.

If these don’t work and you are still having problems logging in, let me know.

[ha-Safran] A Knock on the Door

2015-09-03 Thread Stahl, Sheryl
In the signature story of Etgar Keret's Suddenly a Knock on the Door, Etgar
finds himself sitting in his living room with three men, each with a weapon
demanding that he tell them a story or else! At AJL, we don't need that kind of
encouragement to share a story. We are willing to share our stories, our
expertise, and our time. And while some of you demand an entrance; some of you
need to be cajoled to come into our collective living room. Do you need a
question answered quickly? A list of the latest books for your patron's book
club? How about assistance with cataloging? Your AJL colleagues stand ready to
assist you, but we need your participation. Your dues keep our organization
healthy, thriving, and able to fulfill your needs.

If you have already paid for the 2015-2016 year, we thank you. If you have not,
now is the time! If your membership has lapsed, we welcome your return with
open arms! Login to our website http://jewishlibraries.org/index.php to join or
renew!

Knock on the door and join the party!

Re: [ha-Safran] Multicultural stories

2015-05-06 Thread Stahl, Sheryl
I know a story, but unfortunately I don't remember the names.
There is a story about a person who complained to his rabbi that his house was
too small and the rabbi told him to bring in his chickens, his goat, his cow,
his horse etc. When the man blew up that now his house was way way way too
crowded the rabbi told him to take out the chickens, goat, cow, horse, etc and
suddenly the house seemed much bigger!

I've seen several different versions with either the rabbi, or just a generic
wise man.

Subject: Re: [ha-Safran] Multicultural stories

Hello Friends,

I have been asked to assist a teacher of multicultural literacy at a local
college by reading to her students two versions of the same children's story,
one Jewish and one something else. I have been looking through my sources, but
am having trouble finding something, so I am turning to you. Does anyone have
any suggestions? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

[ha-Safran] Membership status

2014-12-11 Thread Stahl, Sheryl
Hi all,

Thanks to the 400 or so of you who have braved the new website and renewed your
membership. Now it's time for the rest of you to dive in!

Reasons to renew (or join!) now:

5. Sheryl, the VP of Membership, will do a happy dance for every renewal
that comes in.

4. You'll be able to access the many insightful reviews that are posted
quarterly (she said modestly)

3. You'll continue to be inspired by the our chapters' programs described
in the AJL News

2. You'll be part of a community that is passionate about Jewish books.

And the number one reason to renew or join now ...

1. It's the lowest calorie holiday treat around

And, as a bonus, an AJL membership would make a great Hanukkah gift for your
favorite library maven!

If you have any questions about where to join
(www.jewishlibraries.orghttp://www.jewishlibraries.org) or how to pay (check,
credit card, or paypal for international memberships), or where to send checks
(Sheryl Stahl, Frances-Henry Library HUC-JIR, 3077 University Ave. Los Angeles,
CA 90007) or how to login into your account, let me know.

All the best,
Sheryl

[ha-Safran] Are you having trouble finding our new website?

2014-11-04 Thread Stahl, Sheryl
If you had bookmarked our old website at jewishlibraries.org you might be
having trouble finding our new website at jewishlibraries.org Yes, they are
the same address, but at the old site, we automatically directed people to
jewishlibraries.org/main. This “/main” part does not exist on the new site.

So, you might have to reset your bookmarks and clear your cache.

If you have trouble logging in, please let me know!

Subject: [ha-Safran] Judaica Librarianship celebrates one year online

Dear colleagues,

A year ago, today (August 7, 2013) we launched Judaica Librarianship on the
Digital Commons network (bepress), at http://ajlpublishing.org. Since then, we
uploaded three back issues of the journal (Vols. 14, 15, 16/17) and published
our first volume online (Vol. 18). All in all, fifty-five articles are
available online of which most are freely available (Open Access). I am excited
to report that articles from these volumes have been downloaded 6,775 times and
the current number of unique users who visited the site-from 72 countries
around the world-is 2,061. Wow!

The homepage of AJL Publishing features the Paper of the Day, the Top 10
Downloads, and Recent Additions. Users can also run a full-text search on
the content of all articles and receive email or RSS notifications for their
specific searches.

On the journal level (click Judaica Librarianship on the homepage or go to
http://ajlpublishing.org/jl/), users can access additional information about
the journal and search content by volume number (slider on the left-hand bar).
On the article level, users can read abstracts / author information and
download the content, and also share it via social media (hint... please use it
to increase altmetrics) or follow the author across the Digital Commons network.

Volume 19 is scheduled for publication in 2015. The deadline for submissions is
December 31, 2014 (see Call for Papers on the homepage). All research and essay
articles go through double-blind peer review.

Happy anniversary and happy reading!

[ha-Safran] Survey says ...

2014-06-16 Thread Stahl, Sheryl
Well, we don't know yet because there is still one week left to fill it out and
let us know what is on your mind! If you haven't already, please take a minute
(maybe 15) to click the link below. YOUR OPINION MATTERS!

Dear Members,

As part of the AJL Strategic Planning initiative that started last year, we are
in the process of collecting data about the organization's practices,
visibility, transparency and relevance.

Your responses to this survey will help us evaluate the work we do in fostering
access to information and research relating to all things Jewish, in promoting
Jewish literacy and scholarship, and in providing peer support and
professional development for our members.

Please click on this link to access the survey, and respond by June 23rd.
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/AJLenvisions

10 respondents will receive a $25 gift certificate to Amazon (each). The
winners will be announced at the end of the AJL Conference in Las Vegas, on
June 24th. You don't need to be present to win, but to participate in the
random drawing, please provide us with your email at the end of the survey (we
won't attach your name to the answers you give - the survey results will be
anonymous).

Thank you for taking the time to assist us in building a stronger AJL for the
future.

Since this message is being posted on ha-Safran as well, we apologize for the
cross-listing.

Dear all,

Does anyone have Encyclopedia of the Bible and its reception, vol. 8?

I need some help with verifying citation below, i.e. title and page numbers for
Dr. Abusch's entry? The original question is below.

Following my question to you earlier, this is what a fellow of the Albright,
Prof. Zvi Abusch is looking for. He needs the reference (i.e. page numbers and
the year of publication) for a chapter he wrote in the Encylopedia of the Bible
and its Reception. It should appear in vol. 8 Essenes-Fideism (ISBN:
078110183764) which came out already or it might not – therefor there would be
no answer to both of his questions…

We do not have this set yet. Will much appreciate your help. Thank you very
much.

There is an OCLC keyboard (actually it’s the old RLIN keyboard) I think the
only difference is the placement of some of the punctuation and special
characters. Similarly, you need to download the Roman keyboard for the
diacritics, etc.

Happy keyboarding,

Subject: [ha-Safran] help with book choice

Hi.

I'm teaching an undergraduate (upper-division) course in Jewish-American
Literature this spring. I've taught this class several times before and will
be using most of the same books this time. However, I'm not thrilled with one
of the books and am looking for one to replace it. That book is Allegra
Goodman's The Family Markowitz. I use it because it fills certain needs I have
at the end of the syllabus (which is organized chronologically). It is
partially set in California; it is fairly contemporary, being set in the late
20th century; it deals with conflicting views toward Israel, and it includes
characters who are baal tshuva.

Can you think of another book that fits most if not all of these criteria? I
really want a book that is set in California, and I want to make sure the
issues of baal tshuva and American conflicts about Israel come up in one book
or another. I would consider substituting the Goodman book with two others if
I needed them both to satisfy these needs.

Here are the desired traits again:

Contemporary (21st century if possible)
California setting (for some or most if not all of the book)
Baal Tshuva characters (they do not have to be the main characters)
conflicts due to differing views of Israel

Thank you in advance for any suggestions you make.

Happy Secular New Year to everyone.

Thanks again,
June Cummins

[ha-Safran] Renewal updates

2013-09-30 Thread Stahl, Sheryl
Thanks to all our early responders! Our brave early renewers turned out to
be guinea pigs on our new website and have helped up identify a few problems.

1. Make sure you log in before you renew! If you don't, it will give an
error message that there is duplicated information. (and if it doesn't, then it
create a second record for you)

2. Members who live in countries that don't have states (like Israel!)
are getting error message that they have to fill in a state. Clearly AJL wants
to welcome even stateless members ;-) We're working on solving this.

3. We thought we were set up for American Express, but apparently we
weren't. We're in the process of setting that up and hope that it will in place
in the next week or so.

4. If your home zip code and the zip code associated with your credit
card (e.g. an congregation/office card) then the site has been giving error
messages. Again, we're working on trouble shooting this.

5. If you subscribe through a vendor (ESBSCO, SWETS, etc.) ignore the
renewal notices - we'll contact your vendors.

6. We appreciate your patience navigating the new renewal process and if
you aren't actually being patient - that's ok too - we understand!

All the best,

[ha-Safran] AJL renewal time!

2013-09-16 Thread Stahl, Sheryl
Hello all,

I hope that your New Year is off to a wonderful start!

To paraphrase the old aphorism, the VP Membership plans and G-d laughs I
thought that we would be able to send out invoices directly from the new
website, but it is not to be. So please take this opportunity to login into
the website and renew your membership. First logon in at
http://www.jewishlibraries.org/main/ and click on the join AJL link (top
right) and then click again on the join or renew now button. The system
should fill in your profile information.

If you need help logging in, let me know and I can remind you of your login or
reset your password.

Please also take this opportunity to update your profile and make sure your
contact information is correct.

If you need a formal invoice, let me know that too.

Also, using a debit card or low-frills credit card will save AJL money. The
cards that offer you rewards, just pass that cost onto the groups that process
your card (i.e. AJL)

I received the following request and wondered if others might have some good
suggestions for this teacher:

I am going to be co-teaching a class for 2nd/3rd grade group on contemporary
Jews around the world. We will have a historical context but want to focus more
on how/ ways people live now. What's the same, what's different. We are
thinking of starting with the US and some diaspora history and then moving
around the world focusing on a country/ region each week with a book,
traditions, food, music ect. This all sounds great but we have no curriculum. I
am scouring the internet to see what I can find. I thought you might have some
ideas about resources

Thanks in advance for your input,

You can also make a display the Best books you're not reading to highlight
some forgotten books. If you use bookcovers (sadly, we toss ours) you can
recover them with a shiny new jacket to make them look newer.

Dear Rachel,

If the books are in good condition, I see no reason why they can't be
circulating. When I was working at the Ostrow Library at American Jewish
University, we had books that were published in the early part of the 20th
century circulating. However, if the books are signed or are rare copies,
perhaps in might consider placing on a rare book shelf and not circulate.

I hope that this helps,

Dear Hasafranim,

I am near the end of recataloging our adult fiction. I have found several books
from authors such as Martha Wolfenstein, Jacob Lazarre, Rufus Learsi, and
Samuel Gordon, all of which were published between 1900 and 1925. The books are
in relatively good condition, though certainly show their age. My question is,
considering their status and condition, whether to place them in circulating
fiction or reference . What have others done? I know that some of them are
considered forgotten classics, so I don't want to weed them, but they also
show no sign of ever having been circulated.

Hello,

We are thinking of changes some of the class novels our students read about the
Holocaust. Here are the novels students read now:

4th Jacob's Rescue
5th Number of the Stars
6th Devil's Arithmetic
7th The Wave
8th Night

We are considering changing to Diary of Anne Frank for seventh grade and Shadow
on the Mountain for sixth. If you have any suggestions, I would be very
interested.

[ha-Safran] new book

2012-11-16 Thread Stahl, Sheryl
Hi all,

I thought you might be interested in this fascinating new book by my HUC
colleague.

Sheryl

Becoming Frum: How Newcomers Learn the Language and Culture of Orthodox
Judaismhttp://becomingfrum.weebly.com/index.html

by Sarah Bunin Benor
Rutgers University Press
November 2012

In the past few decades, the Orthodox Jewish community has seen an influx of
newcomers: ba'alei teshuva (BTs), literally 'those who return'. BTs grow up in
non-Orthodox homes and decide as adults to take on strict forms of traditional
Jewish observance. But when they join an Orthodox community, they encounter
much more than laws and traditions. They find themselves in the midst of a
whole new culture, involving matchmakers, homemade brisket and farfel, and
Yiddish-influenced grammar.

Becoming Frum shows how BTs adopt many aspects of Orthodox culture, but
sometimes in distinctly BT ways. Some take on as much as they can as quickly
as they can, going beyond the norms of FFBs (those who are frum [religious]
from birth). Others adapt gradually, making sure to maintain aspects of their
pre-Orthodox selves. This yields unique combinations: a black hat worn with
trendy sunglasses, gefilte fish prepared with Indian spices, and Hebrew words
used in the same sentence as American slang (like mamish keepin' it real). By
taking on Orthodox cultural practices in these ways, newcomers are able to
integrate into their new community while indicating their in-between status,
highlighting their identity not only as Orthodox Jews but also as BTs.

The findings in this book, based on a year of ethnographic and sociolinguistic
research in the United States, are relevant for other situations of individuals
joining new communities, such as medical students becoming doctors or Canadians
moving to Australia. Becoming Frum offers a scholarly and accessible look at
the linguistic and cultural process of becoming - an entertaining and
insightful read for students, scholars, and anyone interested in social
science, religious studies, or linguistics.

Re: [ha-Safran] Shalom aleichem - friday night song

2012-11-12 Thread Stahl, Sheryl
I used to sing that walking home from Hillel in my college days. I would repeat
the first verses over and over till I got to the dorms and them sang them a
thankful farewell. I don't know if the angels protected me on my walk or if
no-one wanted to mess with the crazy woman singing a weird language.

Look on http://www.piyut.org.il/english/ but I think the search box only works
in Hebrew, so you may have to search in Hebrew even to find material in English.

If nothing else, you will discover that in some communities, there are FIVE
verses to Shalom Aleikhem. The additional verse is #4; what we are accustomed
to sing as #4, Tzeit'khem l'shalom, becomes #5. The additional verse is
B'shivt'khem l'shalom, i.e., saying to the angels, dwell/stay in peace. This
verse answers the question often posed to the 4-verse version, namely, how
(in)hospitable is it to invite the angels, and then immediately to bid them
farewell. One answer is that since angels don't eat, it would be inconsiderate
to invite them to stay while we enjoy our Shabbat meal. The additional verse
suggests that maybe we DO invite them to stay. The unanswered question is, did
the Ashkenazi tradition drop the 4th verse, or did the Mizrachi communities add
it?

But maybe you already know all this, and that is why you are researching the
song! B'hatzlacha, good luck!

Since the first publication of the Elazar Classification System in the 1960's,
the AJL, as an organization, has had an unwritten anti-Elazar policy. However
many members of AJL over the years have given encouragement and support to the
Elazar project as many Judaica libraries large and small are successfully using
the System.

The catalyst for me writing this message is the current AJL website which
doesn't mention the System and/or include a link to the System's website.

Re: [ha-Safran] Poetry for a women program

2012-03-22 Thread Stahl, Sheryl
There's a poem by Judy Chicago that I really like

sheryl

Poem by Judy Chicago

And then all that has divided us will merge

And then compassion will be wedded to power

And then softness will come to a world that is harsh and unkind

And then both men and women will be gentle

And then both women and men will be strong

And then no person will be subject to another's will

And then all will be rich and free and varied

And then the greed of some will give way to the needs of many

And then all will share equally in the Earth's abundance

And then all will care for the sick and the weak and the old

And then all will nourish the young

And then will cherish life's creatures

And then all will live in harmony with one another and the Earth

And then everywhere will be called Eden once again.
