Interesting. I’m sending this off to my Rabbi. He s young and game for
challenges and change. Our synagogue’ s library has become a dumping ground. We
never had a librarian , nor any library programs. I always say , as Jews , we
are people of  the book twice blessed. Let’s showcase our libraries anyway
possible. Whether to our own congregations or to the public, for Jewish
communities, holidays, personalities( books on Anne Frank Ruth Bader Ginsberg,
various sports players) .)history ( the Holocaust), and books discussing
intolerance ,immigration and of course values, mitzvot  . B Shalom Wendy a.

 Toby,
So beautifully put especially your point about having the clergy and staff
promote the library.
I feel fortunate to still have a job even though it's only 6 hours a week,
have had the same salary for 10 years ( it's sort of a trade-off for flexible
vacation time), the same budget of $1800, and do Hebrew School lessons weekly
and see the preschool for storytime. No time to promote the library; no money
to do meaningful or memorable programming. People who do use the library praise
it. I often get new books before the public library but, as you say, people
don't think of checking the synagogue despite telling people in real time that
we have the books they want to read. It's easier to have the books delivered to
their front doors or to borrow an ebook from the public library.
Our public library- a good one- didn't even promote Jewish American Heritage
Month with a display, never mind programs that might expose patrons-or
customers- to Jewish interest books.
Maybe we need to reinvent our selves as learning or literacy centers to appeal
to younger families.
It seems to be an unsolvable problem, but one which AJL is doing it's best to
help solve.

Circulation numbers are quite fungible, as we all know. A significant
amount of current circ in public libraries is now online. So the numbers
there are up, but the physical objects aren't there.

This leads to the broader topic of digitization. We've been dealing with it
for the past 40 years (first with periodicals), but haven't faced it quite
so directly till now. We now have to ask a somewhat different set of
questions, at all levels.

Dear Judaica Librarians:

My library at Beth David in Westminster, California is being cut in half. They
need the classroom for the Youth Lounge. The Youth Lounge is being turned into
a preschool classroom to make more money for the synagogue as the Preschool has
a waiting list.

The 1,100 childrens and teen books are going into the Religious School
Directors office. The 100 reference books are going into the Rabbi's office.
400 of the 1800 adult fiction and non-fiction books are staying in the new
Youth Lounge. The remaining 1,400 or 1,500 books are going away. This is a
nightmare to eliminate the books that are going away from my ResourceMate
catalog. Has anyone else had to deal with this? I have been the Volunteer
Librarian there for 10 years.

Re: [ha-Safran] Beth David Library (Reform) in Westminster California is Being cut in half.

2023-07-12 Thread Sukenic, Harvey via Hasafran
Michelle,

I don't know the ReSourceMate catalog program. Is there a way you can remove
the catalog records of the books you are not keeping in a batch process, and
not have to do so one by one? Are there barcodes on the books that you can scan
into a file and then upload them to the library system to delete those records?

Hebrew College moved to a new campus in January, a smaller campus. We went from
what had been a few years ago a 90,000-volume library down to about 14,000
volumes. Preparing for the move we had selected the books we are keeping by
putting colored stickers on the books.
I hired some teenagers scan the barcodes for those books we had selected to
keep into a number of files, and I changed the holding records for the books we
are keeping to a new collection in the library system using a batch program. I
was then going to delete all of the remaining records in the old collection
with another batch program.
During the move we were told by the movers that we had packed more books than
we had room for. I knew that beforehand but was told we could bring them over
to the new building and deal with weeding more out later. We had no space in
the new building to store the books so the last two days of the move we were
told we had to pull out an additional 4-5000 books. Those included books that
had the holding records already changed to the new collection.
I am now in the processing of scanning again all of the barcodes of the books
that we kept for the library and again changing the holding records to our new
collection. I will then use a batch process to remove the 50-60,000 records
from catalog that are in the old collection that are no longer here. By the end
of the summer, I should be finished.

If our library is any indication, lack of use would be the main reason.

I've been lucky; though my budget is miniscule compared to some, I've worked to
get the library integrated into the religious school curriculum and it gets
great traffic during the school year. And because we are a small shul in a
small community, the library is considered a major asset, an attraction for
members and Jewish professionals.
But I have weathered my share of short-sighted brutal budget cuts and board
members greedily eyeing the space for other purposes. It could happen to any of
us.

Re: [ha-Safran] Beth David Library (Reform) in Westminster California is Being cut in half.

2023-07-11 Thread Carol Janoff via Hasafran
This is happening to my temple library too. We have sold our current building
and are renting it back for 3 years, but the outer building where the library
filled two rooms with over 7,000 volumes has been unavailable to us from the
time of the sale. The books are all packed in boxes and stored in the attic of
the sanctuary. The new building will almost certainly not have a room (or
rooms) dedicated solely to the library but will most likely have a conference
room or some such with shelves around the perimeter. Obviously most of the
books will not fit and I just don’t even know what we can do with so many
discarded books. It breaks my heart because I started this library and have
added to it and run it for over 25 years and I think it is a fine collection.
I am a volunteer (with a library science degree from 1973) and I don’t really
want to even deal with this situation. I am dreading the day when the
administrator asks me to do it. But if I say NO as this point I have no idea
who would do it.

Forgive me for my humor --- I think you should ask that your salary be
doubled for all the pain and *tsorot* of decision making.

I purged many of the books from the Temple Sholom collection and replaced
them with electronic books. We now have more than free 405 e-books. This
only works for some older books and books that publishers let us have free
access to. Most of our older books are in a closed stack area. The
library room is used for meetings and classes and few books get checked
out. We also have books in the Beit Midrash.

Michelle,
This is so upsetting. It happens to many librarians, but, it doesn’t solve the
problem.
I’ll be surprised if anyone has a simple solution.
