[hlds] Suggestion for new FF Mode

2008-08-19 Thread CAIN
While many players enjoy Friendly Fire being enabled, for public servers FF
requires some type of TeamKill Manager plugin, since it is impossible to have
enough Admins constantly on both teams to properly police a pub server with FF
enabled.

COD4 has a terrific FF mode they call Reflect Damage. It works quite simply.
When FF is enabled and the RD option is selected it is impossible for any
player to damage a teammate.

100% of the damage a player attempts to inflict on a teammate is instead done
to them, including killing themselves if the damage is greater than 100%.

Several different HL2 mod authors have attempted to create a plugin to create a
new Reflect Damage (or mirror damage) option, however they have discovered that
if the damage inflicted is greater than 140%, the teamkiller will succeed in
killing their teammate.

Since it is stil possible to kill a teammate, then it becomes necessary to add
some type of TeamKiller management system to this type of plugin.

All of this can be eliminated if the developers can simply create a new type of
FF mode that would nake it impossible to inflict any damage on a teammate, with
100% of any and all damage being reflected back on the team killer.

Thank you for your consideration.

people will always complain, thats the nature of the beast. instaspawn blows

people complain about the 3-5 seconds you get on disabled respawn timers,
hence the vast number of InstaSpawn plugins available.

[hlds] A Heavy Update

2008-08-19 Thread Blood Letter
Hey Valve,

Can we get an update on the update? Specifically...

Are you still on track for releasing sometime today?
Will we be given an advance warning as the time draws nearer?

I fully expect to find out the update is released, drop my sandvich, and go
into typical panic mode updating servers and maplists and motds and making sure
beetle'smod / metamod / whatever doesn't crash, only to find out it does.

Users will be banging on the gates, sending me dozens of messages along the
lines of:
Is it updated? (Almost...)
When will it be updated? (When the updater finishes...)
It crashed just now! (I know, I know!)
Is there a second update for the crash or is it the plugin's fault? (I don't
know the patcher got stuck and then said 5746529852% and then I patched again
and it said it was fine. It's probably the plugin.)
Is it okay if we achievement farm? (No, but you're free to play like morons
and just have fun.)

I know everyone (Developers, server admins, and players) is excited, and I know
everyone's hard at work making sure things go smoothly, so I appreciate any
info you can give us.

I have seen it, though rare they do post on other issues at times.

 Hey Valve,

Can we get an update on the update? Specifically...

Are you still on track for releasing sometime today?
Will we be given an advance warning as the time draws nearer?

I fully expect to find out the update is released, drop my sandvich, and go
into typical panic mode updating servers and maplists and motds and making
sure beetle'smod / metamod / whatever doesn't crash, only to find out it
 does.

Users will be banging on the gates, sending me dozens of messages along the
 lines of:
 Is it updated? (Almost...)
When will it be updated? (When the updater finishes...)
It crashed just now! (I know, I know!)
Is there a second update for the crash or is it the plugin's fault? (I
don't know the patcher got stuck and then said 5746529852% and then I
patched again and it said it was fine. It's probably the plugin.)
Is it okay if we achievement farm? (No, but you're free to play like
 morons and just have fun.)

I know everyone (Developers, server admins, and players) is excited, and I
know everyone's hard at work making sure things go smoothly, so I appreciate
any info you can give us.

maxplayers to 16, and doesn't change back after you switch away from the
map.

It seems that a bunch of players on the same team are crashing at
random times on arena mode. It doesn't seem to be tied to a specific
map. It also seems to happen right near the start of a round, as a
clump of players will just halt in their tracks and crash while
leaving the spawn.

For those who cannot change their hostname on arena servers:

When the server is changed to an arena map, the server will execute
the config_arena.cfg file located in the cfg directory of the server.
In there is where the hostname is being changed.

people complain about the 3-5 seconds you get on disabled respawn timers,

yes the other types have spawn timers, but with arena having no respawns

It's not a command line option, afaik. The option to use arena mode is
probably within each map itself, or perhaps changing the map to an
arena_ map causes the server to switch to arena mode and use the
arena mapcycle as well as the arena_config.cfg

Re: [hlds] Team Fortress 2 Update Released

2008-08-19 Thread Blood Letter
Just a quick question.
My server seems to be running, but I won't be able to hop on for a while to
test. (People are playing though, so that's a good sign.)

How do you switch to arena mode? Do you just have to load an arena map
manually?
How do you get out of arena mode? Do you just have to manually load a
non-arena map?

I'm set up to load random maps from a file, and was wondering if dumping arena
maps in there would throw things off.
(Since arena config and maps seem to be segregated by default)

ok ..being a little stupid here may be but...

on our windows server and on our linux server i cannot change the
server name away from Team Fortress 2 Arena Server when the server has
updated and running an arena map.

my server.cfg is okay and is the same one it was before the update.

Any help would be great thanks

Re: [hlds] A Heavy Update

2008-08-19 Thread Flubber
If I can't call an specific arena cfg what's the point running multiple
server, i won't install 3 server each having their arena cfg, we need a
clear way to launch server with a specific arena cfg like we do for the
classic cfg file.

-like this :

./srcds_run -game tf +map arena_ravine -ip xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx +maxplayers 18
+serverarenacfgfile demo_arena.cfg +servercfgfile heav.cfg -port 27015
./srcds_run -game tf +map arena_ravine -ip xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx +maxplayers 18
+serverarenacfgfile heav_arena.cfg +servercfgfile heav.cfg -port 27016
ect...

Or else each server will go back to the arena_cfg which is the same and
won't keep name and other tweak proper to each, same problem if (like i want
to) launch 2 server arena only on the same install.

Re: [hlds] A Heavy Update

You could remove the hostname command from the fileproblem solved.

Everyone is so fracking dramatic today!

Flubber wrote:

[hlds] Lovin the Heavy Update

2008-08-19 Thread David
Although i must suggest having the sandvich's taunt to be something
awesome..like he can throw it at someone and kill them. that
would be a cool taunt. throws it like 200mph or sometin. not the same move as
when he attacks at least..

Natasha i dont like much...it only slows em down for like .1 of a second :/

would be awesome if it froze them for .1 seconds or w/e so they can become a
target for someone without such a large spray.

Clearly there must be a command line option to call a specific one for a
server, can't you valve release all info for once?

theres a new config file in cfg called config_arena.cfg

this sets the server name to that.

Re: [hlds] Lovin the Heavy Update

2008-08-19 Thread tgnwells
I was looking forward to the update, but after playing it for only a
couple of hours I can easily say I'm not happy with it.
It seems rushed. The sandvich might have been a good idea but the way
it's done makes no sense. Like it just instantly heals you at the start,
rather than it being a gradual process. Same with arena. It's like the
classes weren't designed for this kind of gameplay but Valve didn't care
and did nothing to compensate.
The new maps are nice, but I hate payload, and am really not into arena
so it's like a waste to me. Oh, and I hate steel as well, so really
there's nothing I'm very impressed with. Well actually I like that the
custom tab is gone, but I probably won't be playing all that much after
this so... uh yeah.

David wrote:

Natasha i dont like much...it only slows em down for like .1 of a second :/

would be awesome if it froze them for .1 seconds or w/e so they can become a
target for someone without such a large spray.

i would have to disagree.

you already have the fist taunt that actually has some range on the
kill. another kill taunt would be to much. with the slow down i think
its quite balanced. It slows people enough with out being over powered.
i think if it froze them in place then it would be a issue.

I agree that valve should make their arena maps modify in some way to make it
more simaler to Halo 3's Swat. Maybe like...eveyrone
gets equiped with very accurate...battle rifle remakes. headshots kill,
everything else hurts a good amount you know..

just throwin ideas out there.

o and community map sucks...love the new pl map. + lumber yard should be
converted into a pl map aswell...
