Re: [hlds] Seere Choke/Lag issues

2006-03-20 Thread Drew Hostetler
I've never ran an Intel/HT server, but I know if I don't specify the
affinities on my dual core X2 it creates extra choke and doubles
pings.

If you haven't already, seperate your servers onto different CPUs.

-go to your processes in the task manager
-find one of the processes, right click, and uncheck CPU1
-find the other process and uncheck CPU0

This will leave you with 2 servers running on different threads.

This might help...

Instead of wasting time with extra memory from IE and Flash, try finding
that srcdsfpsboost.zip file. It is a program that only calls the
appropriate Win32 timer functions to set the time resolution. (ie the

2006-03-20 Thread Deacon - Digital Gaming eXtreme

So I've been banging my head against the KB for some time now. I've tried
both WMP and srcdsbooster and I'm still unable to get more than 85 FPS
server side. Any idea why this would happen?

We have two larger windows configs and they both behave the same. One is an
Opteron 242 and the other is a dual xeon 2.4. Other than the procs, the HW
specs are the same. Here are my specs:
dual xeon 2.4 Ghz, 2 GB RAM, 80 GB 10K RPM HDD.

Two servers (HLDS_W DOD)
1 x 32 (Bound to proc 3, physical proc 2)
1 x 24 (Bound to proc 0, physical proc 1)

Both servers are started w/ the following cmd line options:
-console -heapsize 262144 -game dod +ip server IP +port 27015 +maxplayers
maxplayer +exec server.cfg -dll addons\metamod\dlls\metamod.dll +map map
name -pingboost 3 -sys_tickrate 66

Is heapsize a valid command line option for the server? I always thought
that it was.

Is pingboost 3 still a valid option for windows servers?

Both servers use the following server.cfg settings.
//---

sv_maxrate 1
sv_minrate 0

Instead of wasting time with extra memory from IE and Flash, try finding
that srcdsfpsboost.zip file. It is a program that only calls the
appropriate Win32 timer functions to set the time resolution. (ie the
same thing WMP and Flash do)

I know that the + can be exec'd in game or at console and that - is console

I've downloaded the , srcdsfpsboost.zip but that doesn't seem to do the

You can also use a little app that somebody wrote, which you can find here:
http://whisper.ausgamers.com/downloads/srcdsfpsboost.ziphttp://whisper.ausgamers.com/downloads/srcdsfpsboost.zip
The file now includes the source code so you can compile it yourself if you
wish and I can confirm that the version is safe. When compiling you must
link this to libwinmm.a.
Thank you needforspeed for the source code
Thanks to trog for compiling it.

Please refer to http://whisper.ausgamers.com/wiki/index.php/Tickrate for all
other SRCDS tickrate fps information

http://whisper.ausgamers.com/downloads/srcdsfpsboost.zip will only work for
Windows

http://whisper.ausgamers.com/downloads/srcdsfpsboost.zip will change the
kernel timer resolution (aka pingboosting, fpsboosting) for Windows and is
suitable for SRCDS AND HLDS.

Getting SRCDS to run well on a Window box is a relatively simple matter of:

1) Having enough CPU Memory

2) Choosing the appropriate SRCDS/HLDS settings (player numbers, tickrate,
sys_ticrate, fps_max, sv_maxrate, sv_maxupdaterate) for your Hardware
bandwidth

3) Running http://whisper.ausgamers.com/downloads/srcdsfpsboost.zip

Linux SRCDS/HLDS on the other hand, can require you to jump through several
hoops to achieve the same result. Which requires the use of custom kernel
compilations or upgrades to specific versions of the Linux kernel with the
correct parameters set, which I also outline in
http://whisper.ausgamers.com/wiki/index.php/Tickrate and even after doing
all that, you may not be 100% satisfied with the results compared to what
you would achieve on a Windows based SRCDS/HLDS on EQUIVALENT hardware.

Re: [hlds] Seere Choke/Lag issues

2006-03-20 Thread kyle
--
[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ]
Lets just get this straight once and for all OK.

SERVER FPS CONTROL
HLDS Servers render frames independently from the Client.

HLDS Servers use the CVAR sys_ticrate to control how many frames per second
are rendered.

SRCDS Servers use the CVAR FPS_max to control how many frames per second are
rendered.

Why do you need to control this?

There are two good reasons for you to manage the server FPS. The number one
reason is loading on your Server CPU. The higher the FPS the higher the load
If you are getting more then 50% CPU utilization with your current FPS
settings, you are either running too many players or you have the FPS set
too high.

HLDS Servers start with a default of 60FPS and can easily run up to 1000FPS
(sys_ticrate 1000)

SRCDS Servers start with a default of 300FPS can can also run up to 1000FPS
but will require a substantially higher performance CPU to support this.

Win32 Servers should be run on WIN2K / XP Pro platforms with HLDS on a 1
8GHz CPU and a minimum of 512MB of RAM and SRCDS Servers should be run on 2
2GHz CPUs minimum with 512MB of RAM.

FPS Boost
Unfortunately, both of these servers will not achieve these FPS settings on
a Win32 platform without one tweak. In order for the server to get service
from the operating system, there must be a high-resolution timer running.
Normally, the operating system runs a low resolution timer that is only good
for a max of maybe 100FPS.

Running Media Player (you don't have to run a file, just have it sitting
there open) will force the operating system to use a high-res times that
will give your server the capability of running up to 1000FPS. Media Player
requires about 5MB while in idle, so it isn't too bad. You can also run a
Macromedia SWF file in Internet Explore and it will do the same thing.

INTEL VS AND CPUs
One thing about FPS and the processor manufacturer. If you set sys_ticrate
(HLDS) or FPS_max (SRCDS) to 1000, most Intel CPUs running on Intel chipsets
will run the full 1000fps (plus or minus a few). AND CPUs and Intel CPUs on
non Intel motherboard chipsets may only run at 500FPS with a setting of 1000

It doesn't make a lot of sense and it may not be consistant from platform to
platform but it's just the way the motherboard and the operating system
works.

WHY HIGHER FPS?
The key reason to run higher FPS is the render time. At 1000FPS, the server
is rendering one frame every 1 millisecond (ms). This means that the
worst-case adder to the player ping is only 1ms, I.E.: the player gets more
accurate data and can get it more often.

At 300FPS it's only 3ms which is perfectly acceptable, but at 100FPS it's
10ms, which is a significant percentage of a 100 ping (10%). A player with a
100 ping would actually be getting 110ms response time from the server. Many
AND systems will only run 60FPS without the ping booster which is 17ms.

Heh just to throw a spanner in the works, isn't it sys_ticrate and not
sys_tickrate? (and isn't pingboost for linux?)

Apologies if barking up the wrong tree, get confused myself these days.

What is the CPU Usage like when these are running full? And the 100 Tick

And ill never run any other settings.

It works for both HLDS SRCDS as its ia and OS level effect not
  application
  level.

Well since the poster wrote he was using media player, I just assumed
  he
was talking about running an HL1 mod of some sort.im not even
 sure
  if
that works for srcds or not. But if it does then running media player
  would
take up more CPU then just running a SWF file minimized.
when i use it, it boost's my FPS on my win2k server to 500.

i'm interested in how the hell running a swf file in IE can boost the
fps of a srcds server. Surely running a flash anim would slow it down.
Or is there a special trick this ageing noob dosn't know about.

That's for srcds not regular HLDS. :)

sv_maxrate is not enough for a 100 tickrate server
sv_maxupdaterate of 40 is lower than the CS:SRCDS default of 60 and
  would
nullify the benefit of running at 100 tickrate
Setting the sv_minupdaterate to anything atm seems to cause strange

  issues

for lots of people if the fps drops even for a millisecond

It's been my experience that win2k is the better win OS to run a
  server
  on.

Im running almost the exact server setup except there HL1 mods.
 one
  32
slot dod1.3 one 13 slot match and one 20 slot HLTV.

  Sv_maxrate 12000
  Sv_minupdaterate 20
Sv_maxupdaterate 40I swear by these rate settings.i have
  tested
many settings over the last 3 years that i have run server HL1
  servers.
And ill never run any other settings.
i do however run fedora core 4. which i cannot recommend highly

  enough.

 it,

  nor

  does restarting the whole box

its Win Xp Pro, SP2 latest updates, latest install of SCRDS, and

What is the CPU Usage like when these are running full? And the 100
  Tick
Rate could be something to do with it.
