It's always important to launch servers with the target port in the launch properties, although on an all SRCDS servers they will auto search for a free port if one is taken, it's still best to make sure that they all launch on their intended port (keeps your regulars a lot happier too). 2. Start all servers in incrementing port sequence (this seems to help keep things clean). 3. Never start all servers at once, always start servers 30 to 60 seconds apart, at the very minimum wait until they successfully log onto the steam servers. 4. all servers should have unique -sport specified (VAC port) - you can skip specifying this you only run HL2 servers but if you mix and match it's very important to specify them. 5. make sure for SRCDS servers that the port is open for TCP as well as UDP in the firewall/router if you want RCON to work 6. Ideally, all HLDS services must be restarted at least once before you start a server on the next port ... don't ask me why but all HLDS servers that haven't been restarted at least once are sure to act strangely and starting the next server when the previous one hasn't been restarted may well also start acting weird. This is one setup I find work the best for me: a. SRCDS on port 27015 should be started first with -port 27015 -sport 26902 in the launch properties b. HLDS on port 27016 should be started second with -port 27016 -sport 26904 in the launch properties On my linux server, If I start HLDS first, then one or more SRCDS processes this seems to work ok without specifying the -sport, but if I start an SRCDS and then an HLDS server, HLDS gets very confused and will act weird. I mostly believe that the problem here is SRCDS will look for ports it needs and if they are not available it will automatically try the next in sequence, but HLDS is not able to search at all and instead of complaining that it's unable to acquire a needed port it just stalls there. Just a last gotcha note, if you have to shut down the HLDS server and restart it (or it crashes, etc) you may find that weirdness will return when it restarts again in a system with SRCDS servers already running. Specifying both ports appears to help this, but the HLDS server must be restarted at least once to get it clean. I've opened up for all ports to the IP address and still no luck. Let me explain the problem one more time a little deeper after a little research my self... I host Counter-strike servers for a company in Norway and we have no problem to set up a fully functional server. But after the new "super server" arrived the problem occurred. My server specc: Dual Xeon QuadCore 1600mhZ 5GIG DDR2 REG OS: Linux Debian Etch with kernel 2.6.20.7 kompiled at 1000hz. "cs12:/home/cs# linuxinfo; uname -a Linux cs12 2.6.20.7-default3 #1 SMP Wed Apr 18 14:09:33 CEST 2007 Eight Intel Unknown 1596MHz processors, 25533.51 total bogomips, 5069M RAM System library 2.3.6 Linux cs12 2.6.20.7-default3 #1 SMP Wed Apr 18 14:09:33 CEST 2007 i686 GNU/Linux" Everything looks good so far... The server runs multiple Counter-strike and source servers (the problem occurs with only one server as well), and when I start the servers they are running fine. It says that it has established connection to steam and they are secure. But after a while when new people are connecting they can't validate there Steam_id anymore, and all new players has the STEAM_ID_PENDING status. As for my Source servers on this box they just get offline, I figured that this was because of the same problem? I run the hlds_i686 binary. (hlds_run autodetect uses that bin). RE: [hlds_linux] STEAM_ID_PENDING
Thanks for the link. RE: [hlds_linux] Any good Linux SRCDS OS Setup Guides?
Well, for starters Valve has announced that they will not work on 64bit support, so a clean 32bit enviroment will be best. Also if you intend to use 100ticks you have to compile the cpu timer freq to 1000hz. http://whisper.ausgamers.com/wiki/index.php/Tickrate -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Whisper Sent: Thursday, February 08, 2007 4:48 PM To: hlds_linux@list.valvesoftware.com Subject: [hlds_linux] Any good Linux SRCDS OS Setup Guides? -- [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] Hi guys I figured you would be the best to ask. I'm trying to help a friend get their Linux Box into shape for the SRCDS servers they are running on it. Problem is, I know next to nothing about Linux, so even if I searched for a guide on how to setup Linux OS for SRCDS, I have no way of evaluating the usefulness of the information. I do know a fair bit about SRCDS though, problem is, the person who looks after the box is a Linux guru who doesn't know anything about SRCDS, and since I know nothing about Linux, I'm not much help in telling him all the little in's and out's of setting up a Linux box for SRCDS. In any case, are there any guides on how to setup Linux for SRCDS, particuarly paying attention to specific kernel versions + settings and CPU/MB types and matching them correctly to maxmise SRCDS performance? RE: [hlds_linux] CPU Usage
I have a dual xeon 2,4ghz server, and compiled the new 2.6.20 debian kernel @1000hZ, but when I run a srcds server at 100ticks the CPU consumes 100% with 10ppl. Witch CPU family does this CPU belong? I used the i686, but I see that I also can use i486? Can this be the problem? I installed this; Pentium-4/Celeron(P4-based)/Pentium-4 M/older Xeon I can also choose 2core/newer Xeon, but the make fails when I use this. RE: [hlds_linux] Fluctuating Server FPS, but low CPU usage
I am using Opteron64 DualCore for socket 939, with Debian64 kernel 2.6.19 @ 1000hz, also using the hlds_amd64, a full 10slots server with pingboost 2 enabled consumes about 1-4% CPU with a peak of 8% (mapchange etc). The server is running at 1000fps, but drops down to 500fps some times. When using the hlds_amd binary the CPU consumes about 30% more. [hlds_linux] socket 939 Opteron
I have Debian and the new socket 939 opteron installed, i see that by default hlds_run starts hlds_amd and not hlds_amd64. why? When I run hlds_amd64 with pingboost 2 and 10 players on the server, the CPU load is 0-3% and peaks at 8% (mapchange etc)..
