[hlds_linux] SteamCMD crash - clean install

2012-08-21 Thread Jonah Hirsch
I'm attempting to run steamcmd for the first time. After downloading and
running steam.sh, it crashes after downloading Steam, with the following
error:

terminate called after throwing an instance of
'Grid::CBadCallerErrorStructPtrException'
what(): App provided invalid TSteamError pointer to Steam API

 Thoughts?

 Hey all,

So we have a Linux fix in the pipe and should be rolling it out by the end
of the day. This should fix the massive lag spikes for FTP offloading, and
the (smaller) spikes for those running local HTTP servers.

 Other fixes include:

   - Fixed pruning of stale replay data
   - Renaming failing for those using the local HTTP mode. If you are
serving replay data on a different volume, the rename will fail silently and
the game will explicitly copy delete the file.

We've run frontier on our servers for over a year before it went official,
the only performance complaints seem to come from those with underpowered
PC's. No one with any sort of decent hardware has ever complained about the
map, and we have a fairly large community. It's also a much larger map than
most, so lower performance is to be expected, you're not going to get the
same FPS as you do in achievement_idle as pl_frontier.

The get stuck bugs are mostly because of the cart, and there's nothing to
 be
 done about that.

Who is your server host? It wouldn't be outside the purview of possibility
that you've got a crappy server host with underpowered equipment or
 overloaded boxes either.

I only have a Droid to test it on, but I would love to know if it works
 well on other devices.

The app uses A2S_INFO, A2A_PING, and A2S_PLAYER queries to get information
about each server you have added to its list. Right now, this is just a
proof-of-concept version and it does not do anything fancy, like refreshing
the server list in the background or notifying you if one is down. It also
cannot be used to control a server remotely (RCON, NETCON, etc.) at this
time. Those are things that I hope to add later if I have the time.

If you own an Android device and you are interested in trying my app,
please e-mail me (either on or off list) and I'll get the app to you. Also,
if anyone has any ideas for what it should be called, I'm open to
suggestions. Right now it doesn't have a name. :-)

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Well, it doesn't really crash, it freezes up. The game files are still in

Here's the latest crash dump if someone wants to investigate (I don't have

Re: [hlds_linux] sourcemod l4d2

2010-04-25 Thread Jonah Hirsch
Well, I'll go ahead and help him then.

1) Gameinfo.txt is deprecated. It is no longer needed (see
http://wiki.alliedmods.net/Gameinfo_Deprecation). All you need now is
metamod and your metamod.vdf file in your left4dead2/addons/ folder.
2) This update broke compatability with SourceMod and MetaMod anyway. You
need a NEW metamod.vdf file (Generate it from http://sourcemm.net/vdf), and
snapshots of SourceMM and Sourcemod.
I'm assuming you're on Linux, so these snapshots will work:
http://sourcemm.net/mmsdrop/1.8/mmsource-1.8.1-hg699.tar.gz
http://www.sourcemod.net/smdrop/1.3/sourcemod-1.3.2-hg2947.tar.gz

Then you should be good to go.

Re: [hlds_linux] L4D2 dedicated server not being populated

2010-02-18 Thread Jonah Hirsch
You can leave the search key, but set it to something like this:
sv_search_key ;key:MYKEYHERE

where is the current version # of L4D2 (found by typing version in
the console. Remove the .s when putting it in the key), and where
MYKEYHERE is your search key. That will allow public lobbies to join, and
let you find the specific server.

That, or use mm_dedicated_force_servers without having sv_search_key set.

Not until Valve changes the way group ids are calculated. There is a simple

Subject: [hlds_linux] Team Fortress 2 Update Available

A required update for Team Fortress 2 is now available. Please run
hldsupdatetool to receive the update. The specific change include:

Server Browser (for TF2 and DoD:S)
  - Added a client-side server blacklist:
  - Supports blacklisting of specific servers, all servers on an IP, and
all servers on a class C range.
  - Saves the server list to a file, and has an Import button to allow
 easy sharing (cfg\server_blacklist.txt)

 Balance changes:
  - Reduced the health penalty on The Sandman.
  - The Force-A-Nature knockback on target now:
   - Only applies to hits that deal more than 30 damage and are in close
 range.
   - Factors in the firer's angle of attack when determining the
 knockback direction.
   - Has less of an effect on grounded targets.
  - The Dead Ringer now:
   - Reduces cloak to 40% when uncloaking early.
   - Has a 35% cap on the amount of cloak it can gain from an ammo pack.
   - Has a quieter de-cloak sound.

 Changes / Fixes:
  - Fixed a performance stability issue with AMD processors.
  - Improved the stability of the game server - item backend connection.
  - Fixed a rare server crash related to dispensers.
  - Added min/max values to viewmodel_fov convar to match the settings in
 the
 slider.
  - Reduced the number of moons in ctf_doublecross, sadly.
  - Demo playback now ignores sv_pure settings, allowing demos to easily
 contain custom content.
  - Fixed a crash related to sv_pure and the wireframe_dx6 shader.
  - Players can no longer shoot while stunned.
  - Fixed a bug that caused movement speed reductions to not work on stunned
 players.
  - Soldier Rage bar no longer resets when touching a resupply cabinet.

 Achievement fixes:
  - Fixed the Second Eye Demoman achievement.
  - Fixed a bug in the Play Doctor Medic achievement.
  - Changed the requirements for the Medals of Honor Soldier achievement.
  - Updated description for the Blind Fire Demoman achievement to better
 explain the requirements.
  - Fixed an issue that affected several achievements requiring the use of
 the Equalizer.

 Community requests:
  - Added skip_next_map server ConCommand to skip the next map in the map
 cycle.
  - Added Play a hit sound whenever you injure an enemy option to the
 Multiplayer-Advanced options menu.
  - Added server tf_use_fixedshotgunspreads convar. When set, shotgun
scattergun pellet spreads will use a non-random distribution.
  - Added a show_htmlpage command to allow server operators to display
 custom web pages to clients.

 Changes to the TF Bots:
  - In KOTH mode, Bots are now:
   - More likely to roam around and hunt enemies if there is lots of
 time
 left.
   - Become more likely to push for the point as time runs down, or
 their
 teammates start to capture it.
  - Medic bots now:
   - Opportunistically overheal nearby friends when they can.
   - Prioritize healing of injured nearby friends more.
   - Don't focus on Heavies quite so exclusively.
   - Don't spam their Medigun continuously at round start.
   - Won't choose cover far below their heal target so much
 (koth_nucleus).
   - Fight back with their syringe-gun appropriately.
  - Various improvements to combat behaviors.
  - General bot improvements:
   - They no longer stand still on the point when capturing or defending
 it.
   - They choose more varied routes now.
   - They choose better defensive spots around captured points.
   - They fall back to another weapon when they entirely run out of
 ammo.
   - They adjust their FOV when using zoomed in sniper scope.
   - They treat in-range Sentries as the most dangerous threat.
   - They fire their weapons is more realistic bursts.
   - Engineers use their shotgun properly.
  - Added a virtual mousepad concept to rework how bots track enemy
 players:
   - They now periodically estimate the position and velocity of the
enemy they are tracking, instead of locking on.
   - After rotating beyond a maximum angle, they will pause for a
fraction of a second to re-center their virtual mouse.
   - Allows for over/undershoot slop in aiming. Looks more natural,
 and
 allows skilled players to dodge.
   - Addresses the 180 spin around and fire, Heavy bot is OP,
 Sniper
is OP, and I can't fight a Heavy bot as a Scout issues.
  - Tuned Sniper spot

Well, this is a list that VALVE hosts, so it really only makes sense that
updates to Valve games would be announced. Killing Floor is the only

A more correct answer would be that you can use cheats in a game that wasn't
created via a lobby. So like Brent said load the map locally, or connect to

Correct. That's why it suggests using map mapname, since that gets you

[hlds_linux] L4D forks crashing, no debug log?

2009-10-12 Thread Jonah Hirsch
I'm having a rather disturbing problem with my L4D server right now.

Currently, I'm running NO addons on the server. It's a plain vanilla L4D
server right now.

On startup, I get many of these types of messages:

Child 5 aborted with signal 11

Child wrote a core dump

Debug mode is enabled, I get core dumps, but no debug.log is generated.

I even tried a clean install, no luck. It still crashes on startup and when
clients join (although it comes right back up, and is playable, just not on
the settings set by the lobby).

What's going on?

I've tried -verify_all, but I'm not sure if it's working or not. IIRC, it
should list every file it's checking with a percentage, but it seems to act
like it does if the flag is not there.

I'm hosting this through a GSP, so I'd have to ask them.

FYI: I disabled my HLStatsX:CE daemon (which the servers were logging to),
and I've only experience two crashes since start up (compared with approx. 1
per lobby connection before). That might have been the culprit. Not sure
why, though.

Re: [hlds_linux] l4d issues with logging enabled?

2009-10-12 Thread Jonah Hirsch
Easiest way would be mm_dedicated_force_servers IP:PORT
What happens is that when the lobby connects to the server, for WHATEVER
reason, the server crashes, and recovers quickly, so the players connect to
the default map as if they connected through the console.

My servers won't create a debug log. Will anyone else's?

I think I fixed it.
I renamed the cfg/ directory, redownloaded all the default cfgs, and
replaced the ones in my current cfg directory. Now the servers are becoming
reserved.

There's another interesting thing I noticed.

If you have sv_allow_lobby_connect_only set to 1, and you try to use a
search key, you get booted to the main menu with this error in the console:

Server error - failed to handle reservation request.

Re: [hlds_linux] L4D bots showing up as players

2009-10-01 Thread Jonah Hirsch
I've only seen this since the crash course update. It's rather
annoying, since some stats services, like gametracker, think the
server is always full on coop cause of the bots.

It's also kind of annoying in HLSW, since you have to sift through all
the bots (especially n survival) to find th humans. It's not SO
annoying, but it's slightly inconvenient.

I never saw this happen before the last update.  Has anyone else seen this?

Re: [hlds_linux] Left 4 Dead Update Available

2009-09-29 Thread Jonah Hirsch
I figured out my issue with my forks.
I used to have my ports set in the command line as this:
-port 27001##
which would give me
27001, 27002, 27003, etc.

After this update, I had to change it to -port 270##
That seems to fix that issue (Although not all the servers are coming up,
but the ports might have changed to something I need to discover)

I'm having a terrible time getting my server to update. I found that in
the Windows Steam client you can set a region under the download
settings, and once I set it to Japan it updated straight away at over
1MB/s. Is there a way to do something similar on the Linux Steam client?

[hlds_linux] Search key broken again?

So it seems something's wrong with the search key again, at least for me.

server: sv_search_key = 1015,key:MYKEYHERE

client: sv_search_key = MYKEYHERE

I have no luck finding any of my 25 forked servers.

I tried ms_force (with sv_cheats on locally), to no effect.

What's REALLY annoying, is now instead of ASKING if you want to host a local
game, it just does it automatically.

Anyone having any issues with their search key? or just me?

Re: [hlds_linux] Left 4 Dead Update Available

2009-09-29 Thread Jonah Hirsch
You can still change mp_gamemode with sourcemod
sm_cvar mp_gamemode versus

I've noticed that swiping any player (infected or survivor, human or bot),
the server crashes.

Anyone else?

 improve.

Thanks, that did the trick for me

Re: [hlds_linux] Left 4 Dead Update Available

2009-09-29 Thread Jonah Hirsch
Just wanna mention this is with sourcemod.

I cant test it without sourcemod because
1) mp_gamemode is a hidden cvar now
2) I can't connect to my servers from a lobby, and testing on a listen
server isn't what I want.
