what does this do??

news:mailman.1036028472.9536.hlds_linux@;list.valvesoftware.com...
Hello,

I've just released a new version of PrivatePlayers (P2), my MetaMod plugin
that controls who can play on any Half-Life mod server !

Changes and additions in version 0.40 :
° fixed sometimes bad counting players (sv_timeout workaround for
connections refused by other Metamod plugins)
° fixed multiple MySQL connections when changing maps
° added p2_type 4 : refuse unknown players if there are at least
   (CVar)p2_min known players
° added CVar p2_forcenames, to ensure known players use their known name,
   and protect them (anti-fake)
° added WebMod 0.43 interfacing functions

More information & download page :

Cheers,

there are plugins to disable these types of names. Check out clanmod, it
allows wildcards in the illegal names. Wont let a person with a bad name
join, and when you try to change your name to a bad name it doesnt let you.

This is a talent learned. You sidestep and press the other way. If you fire
at the right time you get a true 100% accurate shot but this is hard to do
and takes lots of practice and skill. I am learning, slowly.

I have seen this in the last couple weeks too and while it sucks, its no
reason to attack the weapon itself. A hack is just as deadly and maddening
on any other weapon.

so was the rail gun in Q3 an unfair weapon as well? There will always be the
TOP, most powerful weapon. Taking that away, takes away the reward of the
good player. My reward for killing 5 peopel in the pistol round is that I
get to buy an awp the next round and actually have some fun.

Re: [hlds_linux] weapon restriction

2002-09-25 Thread Ryan McCullough

I coudnt have said it better. I too used to be an AWP-Hater calling people
who used it "awp whores" as the term goes. Then I started playing with it,
and learned to play with the weapon and grew to love it. I know at least 10
other people who were in the same boat as me. Hated the weapon until they
learned to use it. You know what I hated most about the awp? Getting killed
by it and not being able to kill the other guy even when I bought one. I
think this is why most people dislike the awp. I will tell you, some maps
just are not the same without the awp. What is to stop a sewer storm on
aztec without the awp?

I also agree that the awp takes some level of skill to use as opposed to
some peoples claims that its a n00b weapon. There is a reason almost all CAL
players use it as their primary weapon. Watch some cal demos, 90% of the
time the guy has a deagle and an awp.

I also agree that the problem is not the awp being too powerful of a weapon
for the game, it is the players not evening the skill. Like Unix here said,
a skilled player can own in any weapon. They just prefer the awp.

I would also like to point out that the awp gets harder and harder to use
with each version of CS. The accuracy gets less and less wiht each new
version. Remember when shooting the guy in the foot(I loved doing this on
the bridge on dust) would kill him, now you have to hit them in the chest or
head. The weapon has made some changes and I think right now it is a fairly
balanced between power and difficulty of use.

I would urge you to take Unix's challenge and play with the awp for a week.
Really play with it. I am sure you would come to love it.

Hmm, realistic. And so getting shot 6 times with an mp5 and not dying is
realistic? Come on, its not like this game is s life like.

I usually find players that dislike the awp are usually just not that good

hpbbot is a good stable bot but I ahve found the bots to be kind of dumb.
They cant buy weapons and I dont see them defuse bombs. Stable bot though.

use a camp slap script for metamod. Make the penalty big though, like 25-50
healthpoint for camping more than x number of seconds.

yeah, maybe I was wrong in posting that info but as Dave said I was
suggesting that if you put the problem in front of the big dogs then maybe
they will be encouraged to kick some ass on the problem. I know how
development works and if a manager gets pissed because he suddenly starts
getting complaints from users(and alot of them no less) in his personal
email address it makes magical things happen overnight.

There could be an option for hte admin to kick the offender after they have
been listed as cheating by X different servers. Like I wouldnt take the word

ban for TK, TW, language, sprays.

Re: [hlds_linux] server.cfg, autoexec.cfg, *.cfg - ettiquette

2002-06-05 Thread Ryan McCullough

some commands with your banned.cfg need to be in autoexec rather than
server.cfg. Otherwise you run the risk of overwriting your banned.cfg fairly
often.

Re: [hlds_linux] FW: [hlds_linux] High Server Usage?

2002-06-04 Thread Ryan McCullough

are you running the 3109c patch? I believe it fixed the linux memory
problem. If you are running windows server( in which case why are you
posting here) there isnt a fix yet and doesnt look like one is on the
horizon.

"Barry L. Jeung" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote in message

Never got any response on this issue, and it seems to be worsening. Just
wondering if anyone else is noticing higher than normal memory usage. I run
2 very popular 32 player CS servers, and I get a LOT of "feedback" when the
server isn't running tip-top. The same server listed below, with the
exception that I removed the democracy plugin and updated StatsMe to 2.5.6
was just showing the following:

nobody 15504 14.6 61.1 340720 314716 ? RJun01 366:00 ./hlds -game
cstrike -port 27015 -pingboost 2

I just restarted the server + halfd since I was getting reports of pings
skyrocketing. My other 32 player server is currently showing the following,
and will probably need to be restarted soon as well.

nobody 32516 22.3 42.5 359100 218612 ? SMay31 930:33 ./hlds -game
cstrike -port 27015 -pingboost 2

This box is identically configured, the only difference being a faster
processor (Athlon XP 1800+) and a lower version of RH (7.2 as opposed to
7.3). Both boxes have everything stripped of what they don't need, all RPMS
patched up to date, and "low-fat" kernels compiled from the latest source
(2.4.18). Just wondering if anyone else is noticing skyrocketing memory
usage, and if so, what steps they've taken to troubleshoot/fix. Thanks
again.

That that seem to be a little on the high side for memory usage? Any thing I
can check?

don't really care that it's using that much memory (dedicated CS machine),
but it just seems a little high. Thanks

Hello hlds_l gods,

I've seen it before and though that I saved it. I was mistaken on the
saved it part. Does anyone know the calculation you can use to
determine the approximate amount of players a given amount of bandwidth
can sustain. For instance, if you wanted to figure out how many
players a 1.5/384 ADSL line could handle; or a 768/768. Also, is it
dependent
upon the MOD ? For instance, would Counter Strike require more
bandwidth than plain vanilla Death Match ?

Thanks all,

True. The client port is unimportant in this case. Notice how "lool" is
using 21483. Try banning his IP. If he comes back, then ban his whole subnet
with your linux OS isntead of HL. Someone on here with moreproficiency in
linux than I can tell you how to ban a subnet through your linux os.

as far as the clientport is concerned there is nothing in the "RFC" that
states that the client MUST use 27005, it's just the default port and can
easily be changed, either coming from a NATed environment or changing
+clientport to whatever you want, true?

different from the rest.

This is how normal connects to the server look like :

As you can seem all players have 27005 behind their IP, except for that
rotten cheater, he's got 43622

If someone knows how this is possible, please post it here.

It seems like the machine you currently have shouldn't be acting in the way

RE: Round start ???

2001-09-28 Thread Ryan McCullough

well to start I would make sure you have stuff in your mapcycle.txt. If this
is not the problem then set the mapcycle perms to 777 and see if it works.
If this works, play with the perms to get a level you like and that works.
If it doesn't work tell us your results.

It seems that I know what the problem is, but I don't know the solution.

After the map is about to change, it freezes up. Normally after a few
seconds you see the "Loading" in the screen, and then it changes map.

When I manually change the map, it loads the map as usual and players can
connect again. When you open the console and type "listmaps" nothing
happens ! So I think that that might be the problem. It doesn't know which
map to load next.

On the server the chmod for the mapcycle.txt is 644, and for some weird
reason the server doesn't see it. I run two CS servers on the same
machine, with different start-up lines, motd's and server.cfg's.

Do I need to put the mapcycle.txt in the server.cfg somewhere or in the
startupline ? Or do I need to make the mapcycle.txt executable ?

If someone knows, please reply ;)

Kind regards,

Marcel Beringer

I
think that is the won auth part. You might want to see if you can
ping

half-life.west.won.net IP:

Sounds
like you can't so check your network connection and DNS entries. You might need
to use the IP's in your woncomm.lst

The ATI patch was exactly that, for ATI cards ONLY.

Hi all,

I installed a Hl & CS server for a friend of mine the same way I already
installed a couple of other servers.

The problem with the new server is, that when people connect they can only
spectate. So they enter the server, and cannot pick a team.

I have used exactly the same server.cfg as I have used for the other
servers ( the ones that DO work :) ) but still it doesn't seem to work
correctly.

The server IP is 195.64.68.54:27015 and 195.64.68.54:27025

Doesn anyone know what could be the problem here ?

Grtz,

RE: Punkbuster is dead?

2001-09-25 Thread Ryan McCullough

See thats the thing that they cover. If you were banned for no good reason
you can appeal through the website or an email address. It would need to be
part of the MOTD or sent to the users screen with a kicked by console
message so that the user knew. That way they could apeal and say they
weren't cheating, explain themselves and go from there. By having the server
who banned the person you can talk to the person who banned them and find
out what happened. The user would be unbanned with sufficient reason, but
with a remark that if they screwed around again to be re-banned. Yeah, one
bad admin could screw it up, but if you got alot of complaints from users
about getting banned for now reason on one guys server, you would know that
he was abusing the system. Nothing will ever be perfect, but this is probly
as good as it gets.

If you have a better suggestion I would like to hear it.

this system is something that works in theory but is open to incredible
abuse. the bottom line is, how do you categorically KNOW that someone is
cheating? sure, wallhackers who shoot through walls are easy to spot. but
what about wallhackers that just use the information to be more aware? and
all it takes is one bad admin and someone might get banned from every server
without cause.

the only way something like this would work is if all the admins were in a
trusted domain. i wouldn't want to join this network knowing some of the
peeps on this list, for example...

there's a small number of admins i really trust and those are the ones i'd
like to share my bans with.

RE: Punkbuster is dead?

Someone has something like this already. I don't recall the URL, I will dig
for it. /me rumages
http://pbusted.cscentral.com/caughts.php
http://poo.foolclan.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi
http://quakest.xmission.com/banned.txt /some guys banned list, not proven
HERE IS THE ONE
http://guest:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/ban/
Simon garner posted this a while ago. Maybe with his guidance/help we could
get something like this going in the states and other countries. It uses
mysql and php. He offered at the time to provide the source. If I can get
one of my extra computers back, I would not mind running this. I only have
cable, but this is not really that bandwidth intensive.

The way they solved the trust issue was that when you submitted an ID you
had to give a reason with it for why they were banned. They could also apeal
to it looks like and get unbanned, but they were on probation meaning if
they screwed around again they were banned. What happens is when ID's are
submitted you give a reason such as "PB detected OpenGL", "Intentional Team
Killing/Team Hurting", "abusive towards players and myself", "this person is
[ :) ]Creed, was caught wusing wallHax by PB(gameplanet servers)". This site
also stored who submitted the cheater. Since it is in mysql, I am sure there
is a way to also filter by cheat they were using. For instance if you want
to ban haxors, but not TKers if you do not run a FF server you could just
search for that. It is a pretty sweet way of doing this.

Comments simon? What do you guys think of simon's site? Interested in using
that system?

Works fine for me in required mode.

Anyway, it's a real shame, now we get to welcome back all the cheaters.
Woohoo.

This leads me onto a new idea, however.

Would anyone be interested in taking part in a universal blacklist system?
Whereby trusted people on servers can submit wonid's to a list on a web page
somewhere. You then run a small daemon on your server that contacts this
page and grabs the wonid's and sticks them in the banlist. The only problem
with this system is that you have to trust the people submitting ids for
banning. Actually proving a cheat is difficult but maybe possible by
watching the first person perspective in the new spectator mode. Perhaps a
screenshot or demo from this would be required before accepting an id..

If anyone is interested in taking part in a coordinated blacklist like this,
I'd be happy to organise it. I know there are blacklists out there already,
but I'd like to think this would be better coordinated and automated..

Comments anyone?

Hey there, I don't think the Linux server uses mp.dll. I don't think the
file even exists in the Linux install. Not only that, if it was a problem
loading a DLL or SO, the server would not run at all.

This is how I upgrade mine. I untar the full install package in a temporary
area. Then I delete all the files I don't want to overwrite, like:
liblist.gam, server.cfg, etc. After that I cp -R * /path/to/dir

If you are running admin mod, you need the latest version and you should
also check metamod.org for an update and replace metamod_i386.so.

Start over with the full install packages and you should be ok.

I downloaded these from Valve, but I do not have the official Valve letter

RE: adminmod 2.50e broken with new hl/cs?

2001-09-19 Thread Ryan McCullough

well, when I go here: http://www.metamod.org/

I get this:

403 Forbidden

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /

Am I using the right url?

I'm not aware of a permissions problem on the server; everything should be
working. There does seem to be a lot of traffic now, though, so that may
be affecting response time. I haven't seen any particular traffic
attributable to nimba, though.

This went across the hlds list already.

Apparently metamod is broken in the new release. Look for a new metamod. For
some reason the site is jacked right now: http://www.metamod.org/ with some
permissions thing. Maybe in response to nimba???

Uh, subject says most of it is admin mod broken or am I a moron
(both are possible).

I just switched servers so I'm not totally sure if I fudged this up or
if adminmod needs to be updated too.

HL just coredumps upon someone joining a team. I didn't have any
special plugins or anything going because like I said, I _just_ switched
the servers (, dual 1.2 now in service)

help?

I should have checked this before I extracted the update, but make sure
you backup your current server.cfg before you extract the update because
it will be overwritten.

Luckily, all my .cfg's are in /etc/hlds_l/cstrike and sym-linked in
/opt/games/half-life/hlds_l/cstrike, so I just had to relink it, not go to
my backups. :)

But still, is it necissary to have a server.cfg in the upgrade archive?
>From my point of view, it's definitly not desirable. I think it should be
in the full install, but not in the update.

Anyway, up and running on the new patches. Now I just have to sneak out of
work early and go play...hehehe. :)
