If a kernel change fixed it, it's probably not as much a valve issue
than the rather.. Linux tends to change it's VM etc per every
release, so I'm not surprised.

It will probably use 100% of 1 virtual CPU and 0% of the other virtual
CPU, on average that makes 50% ;)

But the CPU usage is not really the big deal, we're only seeing that on
some servers. The bigger deal is that since the update the server
performance seems to be more unstable, especially with pingboosted servers.

We're experiencing some weird issues here too, on multiple boxes running
multiple Linux versions. All AMD Opteron with Gentoo 64 bit or Ubuntu 64

It would be nice if Alfred could comment on the changes made in the last

Running v35 without Pingboost with 24 Players - 100% Cpu.
Running v29 without Pingboost with 24 Players 56% Cpu.

It must be something else.

Uniform test structure? (was Re: [hlds_linux] Very high CPU usage since HLDS Engine upgrade 35)

2006-05-07 Thread Bonn Ortloff

Heya all,

I participated in the swapbeta test that Alfred had going during Valve's
move from an IPC architecture to a event-driven architecture, in hopes
of making everything perform unilaterally and cross-platform between the
hlds_l and hlds_win32 binaries.

Unfortunatly, my test set was quite hasty, and we did not test all the
possible configurations of hlds_i386 on our systems, the majority of
which being dual Intel Xeon 3.0ghz w/ HT, 2GB RAM and SCSI HDDs.

Since the release of Engine v35, we've had enough reports of 'registry'
problems that I was forced to make a backup 'last known good' copy of
hlds, just in case we had anymore trouble.

These troubles, again, seem to revolve around our pingboosted 32-bit
setups, as those without pingboost seem to have no trouble with the
newest release.

How about instead of posting a set of specs, we go one step further and
begin to propose ways to effectively prod the binaries, from not just
the server-side perspective but the player-side as well, collect reports
from players on these servers, get as much data as possible together to
bundle up and send to Alfred, for him to sift through and see if he can
find any correlations?

DISCUSS! Or I'll just force a testing structure idea on everyone that
I've been throwing around. :)

Just from the two responses already to this, it seems it's not CPU-

Re: [hlds_linux] Very high CPU usage since HLDS Engine upgrade 35

2006-04-26 Thread Stuart Stegall

The 64bit hlds binaries have problems the most important of which is
lack of VAC support. I do not run the 64bit version of any OS for game
servers as running the process through linux32 seems to be slower than
running with a standard 32bit kernel/libraries. (on the webhosting side
we use 64bit OS for all our database servers as there is a big
performance gain. for web servers it doesn't really seem to make much
of a difference when you also use ssl accelerators)

I wish we could find what element all of the people with this issue have
in common. (non SSE cpus, or HT enabled CPUs) There's probably some
type of race condition that only occurs with some software or hardware
difference. All my systems are Operton 250 or above, 2GB of RAM, FC
access to a SAN, and my linux systems use either Gentoo or RHEL4. I
totally get the exact same CPU performance from the current and the
pre35 files.

This won't be a security leak or anything - it's the information on
your CPU. If the sample set is varied enough, a full dmesg might be

Since I upgraded my Natural-Selection Linux Server from 'Linux Server
Engine' version 29 to 35, it takes very high CPU usage.
Around 20-30% more than usual, so that I had to reduce the Serverslots
from 32 to 20, as else the Pings increase about 300, up to 600 and
higher.
I'm 100% sure, that it is the Engine update 35, as I didnt change
anything else on the Server since months - and before there were no
problems.

I run a Amd Athlon 3000+ with 1 GB Ram and Suse 9.3 with Kernel: "Linux
linux 2.6.11.4-21.10-default #1 Tue Nov 29 14:32:49 UTC 2005 i686 athlon
i386 GNU/Linux"
Its a rootserver and theres nothing else running on it.

Unfortunaly I forgot to make an backup before I updated the Server, so
it would be nice if you could tell me where I can dowload the older HLDS
version 29, or lower, so I can downgrade till that problem is fixed.

Yes, its absolutely not the mod, but the HLDS upgrade - I downgraded to
Engine upgrade v20 now (was the newest-old one I could find), and we got
no Problems - CPU usage normal.
The Problems might also exist in HLDS upgrades between 29 and 35, but I
don't know, as I upgraded from 29 to 35 directly. If someone hands me a
link to older Upgrades, I can try them too.
