RE: [Hornlist] help
First: throw the tuner out of your practice room use your ear to correct pitches. If the slides are set once, they should stay so. Just remember how far they have to be pulled out each. Remember that the Bb-slides (the lower set) have to be pulled out just a bit less than the F-slides. Get the Schantl: Great theoretical-practical Method work it through on both sides of the horn by combining both sides. Do one #-tonality followed by one bb-tonality. If you have difficulties getting the very high notes, skip these measures try them two months or half year later when your embouchure is improved. Get the right horn mouthpiece after playing mello before. Come back with your questions, after you have passed this book. = -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Unkn own Sent: Sunday, April 11, 2004 2:09 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Hornlist] help hello, i just recently managed to get a double french horn. there isnt any horn tutors in my area, so i would have to learn how to play the horn by myself. basically, i have the foundation due to my 4 years experience on playing the marching mellophone in my school's marching band. i do know the fingerings for the horn and i use a tuner to keep in tune. what can i do to improve my playing and my techniques? please advice. thanks Ian - Do you Yahoo!? [Hornlist] expression
We played Parsifal last night, the 5 1/2 hours opera by Wagner. He called it Buehnenweihefestspiel = difficult to translate, but I try: Theatralic passion play, where passion means the Christian way of passion, as the Holy Friday ceremony is part of the play. Well, this piece is full, very full of emotions, very strong emotions, not because of the story, no, because of the music, which is high grade passionate but also forgiving asking for forgiveness and very peaceful. Now the point: How to express such most intimate feelings ? The more words you know, the more ways of interpretation you will find. How many precious semi precious stones do you know how many typical colours do they have ? How many flowers do you know , and their smell ? Did you ever notice what different kind of activity you can command your hand ? How many different spices do you recognize in one single dish ? Ooops, you rely on Ketchup, salt, onion pepper only. Yes, that´s modern society. Do you know the different types taste of the several vinegars ? How many sorts of cheese do you know. You might ask, what has that to do with music ? Yes, it has to do with music. The wider your horizon (more knowledge) the better the interpretation of just two-dimensional black signs on white paper, what we call music commonly. If you have developed your taste regarding nature food everything (broaden knowledge), the better you will be as three dimensional interpreter of the phenomenon we call music. This applies to all kind of music without exemption. The two dimensional way is just loud soft, slow fast. The three dimensional music has expression as the third dimension. Expression translates as colours, emphasis, phrase, style, feeling feeling again, but all on an elevated level but still human but sometimes celestial, heavenly or supernatural, - and the EGO should be placed just in the farthest corner, which means not to produce oneself into the foreground, rather serving to the composer, the group or the partner. [Hornlist] Freddy Vogelgesang solos on Brahms trio
Sent this over the weekend and it vanished into thin air, so now I'm trying from work. Sorry if the topic has already played itself out (hey, not too of a bad unintentional pun). -ph This record used to be fairly common in cutout bins here in NYC. I'm sorry that I didn't pick up a dozen copies. Ironically, or maybe appropriately, it seemed to come from the same source as the Music Minus One LPs. One of the cute touches of this album was the cover photo which had Vogelgesang in concert à tre, so to speak. Given the fact that this was done some thirty years or more ago, the level of technical trickery was pretty impressive. I recall speaking with free-lancers here that knew him and they said that he was somewhat embarrassed by the low-level notoriety that the album brought to him. This record was much fun to play for unsuspecting friends. Unfortunately, my copy seems to have been loaned out to one friend too many and remains missing in action; I've desperately tried to figure out who has it, but no one will admit it. Perhaps one of my old horn acquaintances reading this posting has it (unintentionally un-returned, of course) and will get in touch. All is forgiven. [Hornlist] Slightly OT, but not totally: New frontiers in robotics
Somehow, the NYPL web-based version of its mail software gets rejected by most of the listservs that I am subscribed to (I don't think that there is any plain-text option available; at least, I can't find it if it does exist), so I am re-posting this from work using the dedicated version on my PC. By now, the link may be out of date, but give it a try if you want a bit of a laugh (well, I found it hysterical; your mileage may vary). RE: [Hornlist] dictionaries
Believe it or not, in my GS group, we have had several soloists who had a hard time going just slow enough not to make mincemeat of the words, despite the music directors insistence on sowing down. It seems that people unconsciously have the need to use such pieces to show off what they can do. [or can't] Dave J. David Goldberg [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This phenomenon shows up often in Gilbert Sullivan patter songs - they tend to be played so fast that the singer can barely keep up, and the effect is unstable. It takes a brave musical director to ease up a bit so that the singer stays with with the orchestra and the words are understandable. - Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Hello Peter, I have the LP, but cannot find it in my archive, but have a casette copy fortunately. Can convert it to CD, eventually, for you. During the search for this tape, I discovered some other tapes cassettes: Joseph Eger playing Peter Jona Korn´s Concertino op.15 (Radio Orchestra Vienna), Alfred Brain: Haydn no.2 with Janssens Symphony, Dennis Brain playing Haydn No.2 (direct BBC transmission 1955 ? w/Aldebough , Goehr cond. ?), Dennis Brain Neill Sanders, E.Chapman A.Cursue playing Hindemith´s Sonata for 4 horns (1956), M.Seiber: Notturno for horn strings, LSO Dennis Brain (1955), A.Lewis: Concerto for Horn Strings with Dennis Brain BBC Midland (1957), Lecture Recital on early horn incl. Mozart no.1 incompl. 1st mov. On hand horn, Gordon Jacob: Concerto no.1 with Dennis Brain Riddick String Orch. (1951 first broadcast perf.), Britten: The Heart of the Matter w/Dennis Brain Peter Pears, Aldebourgh Festival 1956) A.Cooker: Arioso Scherzo w/Den nis Brain Carter String Trio (1956). Quite a treasure. If I have time this week, I will transfer these recordings to CD -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of phirsch Sent: Monday, April 12, 2004 2:54 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Hornlist] Freddy Vogelgesang solos on Brahms trio ___ post: [EMAIL PROTECTED] set your options at http://music.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
[Hornlist] Summer Break in DC
Hello fellow crowded email box friends. I'm a college horn student, from LSU, thats going home for summer break in Washington DC. I'm desperate to find somewhere to play as to keep me honest about taking care of my horn business. I'm sure everyone can sympathize with the monotony of a day job and trying to fit your practice into that rat race wothout an outlet to keep you on your toes. If anyone knows of a group that needs a horn player in or around Washington DC, around the college level and for just the summer, let me know. Thanks Mike Rogers PS- does anyone know a way to contact Scott Ferring (sp.) about lessons? ___ post: [EMAIL PROTECTED] set your options at http://music.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

Re: [Hornlist] Re: Slide Lubricants
I know this is probably a little too much on-topic, but back to the subject of slide grease I've started using the Hetman slide gel. It takes a little longer to get on the slides since it comes out in a thin bead half the time, but I find that a little goes a long way anyways. Plus, it seems to have a very secure grip and seal all around. Just my two Euros...
