[Hornlist] John Packer Mini French Horn

2008-10-04 Thread Graham Jarvis
Hi
I have seen this instrument on the J Packer website and am seriously thinking
about buying it (not, I would stress as a serious instrument). Does anyone have
any experience of this horn? (Intonation? Durability?... that sort of thing).
Any opinions as to how it compares with the Wisemann or Berkeley versions?

Regards
 Graham Jarvis

[Hornlist] Saint-Saens - Horn and organ

2008-08-06 Thread Graham Jarvis
Hi
Can anyone give me some information about the Saint-Saëns Andante for horn and
organ?
I love the two romances (Op 36 and 67(?)) and if the Andante is in the same
class then it would be a good piece of music to have available.
I'm thinking of details like length, difficulty... etc.

Graham Jarvis

[Hornlist] The Dennis Brain - Roberto Inglez connection

2008-06-07 Thread Graham Jarvis
Hi
Inspired by a recent discussion on this list (or was it the other list) I
have just read Jasper Rees' fascinating book - I found my horn.
Lots of interesting stuff - I read it too quickly but will be re-reading it
before too long. I was especially intrigued to read that Dennis Brain had
played with Roberto Inglez and his orchestra. Is anyone able to point me in the
direction of some recordings of D.B. in this context? I've found some CDs on
Amazon but none of them mention Dennis Brain by name - is there anyone out
there in the know?

[Hornlist] Peter Müller

2008-04-17 Thread Graham Jarvis
Hi
A wind quintet that I play with has been working on one of three quintets by
Peter Müller (1791-1877 ). We've been trying to find out more about Müller but
not got very far.
According to information gleaned by our clarinettist he was born in Hanau (near
Frankfurt am Main) and active as music-teacher and priest in the Darmstadt area.
Any more information would be most welcome.
We're enjoying his 1st Quintet in Eb which has some pleasant melodic material -
even/also for the horn!

Graham Jarvis

[Hornlist] Fuchs - Canticle to the Sun

2008-02-11 Thread Graham Jarvis
Hi
I just listened for the first time to Keneth Fuchs' horn concerto - Canticle
to the Sun (Timothy Jones and the LSO). Does anyone know whether there is an
arrangement for horn and piano that is available? I'd love to do some work on
this peice of music - I doubt whether I would ever get a chance to perform it
(even if I could bring it off) but I'm sure I would get a lot of satisfaction
out of working at it.
If there is no piano arrangement I would be interested to know if the solo horn
part is available on it's own.
Thanks,
Graham

[Hornlist] Slur - or phrase marking?

2008-01-14 Thread Graham Jarvis
Hi
I can't believe I've ben playing the horn for as long as I have without having
cleared this question up but better late than never.

How do I know whether a curved line over (or below) a series of denotes is
meant to denote a slur (notes connected without tonguing) or a phrase-mark
(notes connected musically but not ruling out tongued articulation between
notes)?

The issue arose when I was looking at the Concone studies which I recently
bought. But thinking back over rcent orchestra rehearsals I can remember times
when I've made decisions based in instinct rather than theory.

Are there rules out there?

Graham

Black seems a logical choice. Partly because it isn't a colour - and therefore
won't clash with other colours. Partly because, as I see it a black mute is
more discreet and contributes to a less fussy stage.

Then again - the fact that we had a can of black spray paint lying around was
also a factor!

I have opne of these bags. It's given me good service for 5 years or so.
Its a soft gig bag so it's not going to give any protection from hard knocks
but it is reasonably well padded and certainly better than some of the other
bags I looked at.

Space is limited but the compartment at the front has room for my
metronome/tuner, Dennis Wick straight mute, 2 mouthpeices, and 2 valve oil
bottles and slide wax. There is a side container with room for music - not a
thick wad but more than just a4 sixe.

The straps are robust (though I've had to adjust the clips which had a tendency
to come loose - a quick squeeze with a pair of pliers did the trick. And the
case is comfortable enough as a back-pack.

I wouldn't let my horn out of my sight (or reach) in this (or any other soft
bag) but it lets me cycle to rehearsals which means I can do my bit for the
environment.

Hope that's some use.

Graham

2007-10-19 Thread Graham Jarvis

Hi

Thanks for all the advice...
A special thank you to Dave Weiner. I'm based in Sweden so getting you to do
the job was never likely to be a realistic option! I'm going to have a go at
replacing the corks with gasket material. I've prepared the way by converting
your fractions of an inch into millimetres (4.5mm) and found theSwedish
equivalent of gasket material. I've got a day off on Monday so we'll see how it
goes then!
Thanks also to those who sent suggestions for alternative mutes - we'll se how
it goes with the H+B first.

So far noone has come up with any reason why the Dennis Wick should not work in
the lower register. Should I consider shaving the corks on that mute - now that
I know how to replace them if something goes terribly wrong ; ).

I thnk I might keep the DW for normal muted passages as it really is quite OK
in the higher range. We're playing the Beethoven Violin Concerto soon and it
works fine for the solo at the end of the slow movt.

Graham

[Hornlist] Mute problem

2007-10-18 Thread Graham Jarvis
Hi
I bought a Dennis Wick aluminium straight mute a while back.
It works fine in the higher register but around and below middle-C ( F horn
notation ) it stops sounding like a mute and just gives an unsatisfactory
muffled sound with poor intonation.
My old Humes and Berg was fine but the corks fell apart and I was hoping to
upgrade. Is there something I can do with the Dennis Wick or should I be
looking for something else.
My horn has a narrow bell flare - I guess there are mutes that would work we´ll
in something like an 8D that wouldn't be suitable for my purposes.
Any ideas?

Graham

[Hornlist] Mozart Symphonies

2007-10-18 Thread Graham Jarvis
Hi (again)
While I'm at it (I normally just lurk).
I was at a live concert a couple of weeks ago when the Swedish Chamber
orchestra (our local band!) played Mozart's little g-minor symphony (No 25 -
K183 I think).
I recall some discussion of this symphony on the list a while ago. The
performance was brilliant and when I looked at a score of the last movement I
was even more impressed by what I'd heard.

The experience got me hungry for more - and I thought I'd just ask you guys -
what are your favourite Mozart symphonies. To play? To listen to?

Anny comments?

[Hornlist] Corno da caccia

2007-01-06 Thread Graham Jarvis
Hi listers
I picked up a bargain in a CD sale the other day. A boxed set of 4 CDs from
Berlin Classics with music for Blechbläser, Trompete, Corno da caccia und
orgel.
I am happy enough with the recordings and performances - except that the Corno
da caccia turns out not to be a baroque natural horn but a modern invention
which seems to be a cross between a very high descant horn and a (piccolo?)
trumpet. Played by a trumpeter without using a hand in the bell (there probably
wouldn't be room for a couple of fingers!!).
Can anybody throw any light on this kind of instrument?
I always understood the Corno da caccia to be the baroque or early classical
natural horn.

Graham

[Hornlist] O holy night (in F)

2006-12-18 Thread Graham Jarvis
Hi (and please excuse the double post again)
I urgently need to get hold of sheet music for Adolph Adam's Cantique de Noel
(O Holy Night... or O Helga Natt here in Sweden) - in F major (C maj for the
Horn). I've ordered a copy but, although I'm hoping it will arrive in time for
a Christmas day service I'm sure it won't arrive in time for our organist to
practice the unfamiliar key. The Swedes have a tradition of very early morning
services (Julotta)which means I'll be playing this at the end of a service that
starts at 5.30!! (A record för me as far as early starts are concerned!

I'd be very grateful if anyone out there had the Cantique in a pdf or other
suitable format and could mail it to me off list.

2006-12-15 Thread Graham Jarvis
Hi again.
Thanks for the responses. my concern was not with the oiling but with the
technique he uses, pulling and pushing the slide without opening the valve.
I've always understood that the slides should only be moved with the valves
depressed - to avoid creating hihj (or low) pressure that might lead to leaky
valves in the long run. I'm no expert - and I have been long enough on the list
to respect those of you who have backed up the advice in the video. I guess I
can relax and pull out the slides without having to think about holding the
valves down at the same time.

[Hornlist] Tough exit (Was tough entrance)

2006-12-09 Thread Graham Jarvis
Hi
Tough entrances can be a pain - but a tough end to a piece can be worse. After
all, a mistake at the beginning gives you time to let the audience forget. If
the mistake's right at the end then that's what the audience are left with.
My own pet hate is the very end of the last movement of Lars Erik Larssons
music for Shakespeare's a Winter's Tale (Vintersaga). I can't remember what
the movement is called but in the closing bars the first horn has a delicate
entrance on an f# (pianissomo, dotted half-note as I remember) moving equally
delivately delicately down to a b natural. Preceded by enough counted bars to
make the challenge really nerv-racking.

I think the conductor of our (amateur) orchestra must like the work because
I've had to face the entrance far too often for my liking - no disasters in
performance but some spectacular misses in rehearsal.

Graham

[Hornlist] John Graas - name that horn?

2006-02-08 Thread Graham Jarvis
Calling all listers!

Having had only limited success on the Yahoo hornlist I'm going to try my luck
here.
(Don't let me down...)
I recently bought a LonehillJazz CD Jazz-lab 12 with John Graas on horn.
On the front cover of the CD Graas is holding a single Bb horn with F extension
(successfully identified as a Sansone by Yahoo listers).
On the inside of the insert he's shown playing a full double that has still not
been (convincingly to me) identified. The wrap is not one i recognised - but
it's certainly close to a current Lidl model. (Anborg has also been mentioned -
though it's nothing like the Anborg full-double that I still use). Two details
that could be deciders are a bulge on the bell-brace and apull ring on what I
guess is the Bb tuning slide.
I've posted photos on the Yahoo group http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/horn/
You have to be (or become) a member to see them. If you're curious I could send
a copy of the picture by mail.
I'd like to be able to offer a prize for the first definite identification -
but I can't think what the prize could be - maybe the satisfaction of winning
is enough?

2005-12-30 Thread Graham Jarvis
William Melton mentioned a number of alternative recordings if the Brahms Songs:

Graham, I won't try to suggest a better recording (lets leave the
critics to do that), but here are some that offer some fine horn
 players:

Stefan Jezierski and Manfred Klier with Marcus Creed and the RIAS-
 Kammerchor (Harmonia mundi CD)
Anthony Halstead and Christian Rutherford with John Eliot Gardiner
and the Monteverdi Choir (Philips CD)
Gerd Seifert and Alfred Dedens with Hubert Guenther and the
 Rheinische Singgemeinschaft (Garnet LP)
Dennis Brain and Norman Del Mar with Roy Henderson and the Nottingham
 Oriana Choir (Decca 78)

The last two are worth looking for if they are ever issued on CD
because they document their first players in young years, the Brain
recorded in 1943, and Seifert in 1964 (at the end of his stint in
 Duesseldorf).

It looks as though the first two on the list are unavailable just now - from
Amazon at least. Seifert or Brain would have been interesting of course - in a
few years perhaps?
looks like it will be the London Symphony Chorus/City of London Sinfonia /
Hickox.

Re: [Hornlist] Rank Amateur Counting Measures

2005-05-22 Thread Graham Jarvis
Hi
Herb Foster asked about tips for counting.

Like Herb, I resort to fingers but usually find that it's enough to count with
five fingers without complicating things with curled or uncurled - if I'm
likely to get more than five bars/measures then I'd be thinking about writing
in some cues. In the end the counting has to be in the head not the fingers -
but sometimes the extra reinforcement is a life-saver.

Whenever possible I would count a slow 8 as a four. (One, and two, and three,
and four and) Just works better for me that way.

I don't usually find it's a problem in concert - but counting the same passage
umpteen times while the strings sort out the details can make concentration
difficult after a long day's work.

Regards,
Graham

[Hornlist] Work(s) in progress

2005-02-15 Thread Graham Jarvis
Hello listers
I guess I am just curious - but maybe I'm not the only one.
Wouldn't it be interesting to know what music we're working on just now - a
sort of snapshot of repertoire covered by hornlisters at one moment of time.
(It could be for a solo recital, a community band concert, a church service, a
freelance gig, a pro orchestra concert, or whatever).
Maybe we shouldn't count studies - we can take all that Kopprasch for granted.
...and not works that we're looking at just for interest (I'm getting to know
the Gliére concerto at the moment - but I'll never play it in public!!).

I can kick of with our community/amateur orchestra working on Beethoven's First
Symphony and a selection of songs by Carl Michael Bellman. (In the wind section
we're going to be working up Mozart's Serenade No. 11 in Eb.)

All the best,
Graham

[Hornlist] Problem accessing IHS site.

2005-01-24 Thread Graham Jarvis
Dear listers
I have been trying to access the IHS website for months with no success. I know
that I have been using the right URL address and have been in contact with my
internet provider to try to solve the problem.
They have been extremely helpful but say that they are unable to more and that
the problem lies with the IHS site's hostmaster. I'd be grateful for any tips
that any of you might have. I'd also be grateful for an e-mail address direct
to the IHS webmaster.
Thanks,
Graham
(P.S. I know that I've been using the right URL because I sent it to my
internet provider and they had no problem accessing the site. Don't ask me to
explain that - the wonderful world of computing strikes again.)

[Hornlist] Still having problems with the IHS site

2004-10-21 Thread Graham Jarvis
Hi again.
Thanks - those of you who have confirmed that the IHS website is working.
Unfortunately it still isn't working for me. As one of you suggested, it may well be a
problem with my internet operator or with my browser settings - could somebody give me
some tips (off-list) - I don't know where to start and don't want to start messing
with my settings on the basis of guesswork. The funny thing is that no other websites
seem to be affected.
Thanks,
Graham

[Hornlist] IHS site?

2004-10-19 Thread Graham Jarvis
Hi.
Does anyone know whether there has been a problem with the IHS website?
I have been trying with www.hornsociety.org - but don't get through to the server.
Any ideas?

Thanks,

[Hornlist] Missing digest

2004-08-25 Thread Graham Jarvis
Hi.
Due to an overenthusiatic relative with a new digital camera I had problems with an
overfull e-mailbox. This meant that I missed digest Vol.20 Issue 24. Would anyone be
able to send me a copy. (I'm particularly enjoying some of the threads at the moment.)
Thanks,
Graham

[Hornlist] Name that horn!?

2004-02-28 Thread Graham Jarvis
Hello there,
I saw the end of a broadcast by the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra the other day and
caught a tantalising glimpse of an unusual looking horn. It looked as though the valve
cluster was on the opposite side of the horn to the valve levers (if you can picture
what I mean) with the valve slides pointing towards the players left hand instead of
away from them. By now you are probably either totally confused or have a pertty good
idea what kind of horn it was.
The section listings on hornplayer.net haven't been much help. As far as I can see,
the instruments listed are E. Schmid and Alexander - no likely candidates there as far
as I'm aware.
So - any suggestions?
Thanks,
Graham

[Hornlist] Who... playing what? (Just curious)

2004-01-18 Thread Graham Jarvis
Hi.
I just enjoyed a video recording of Bach's Christmas Oratorio (1993 Teldec) performed
by the Munich Bach Soloists etc. The performance was great - the recording frustrating
as the hornists were always filmed from the wrong side making it difficult to work
out what type of horn they were using. Double? Triple Alexander?
It'd also be interesting to know who the hornists were. As this list usually provides
answers to impossibly obscure questions I feel certain that someone (Hans P?) will be
able to satisfy my idle curiosity without going to too much trouble.
Thanks,
Graham

[Hornlist] RE: Opinions and logic

2003-12-08 Thread Graham Jarvis
The Jack Attack writes:

William writes:
No that is only my opinion. It is not the most pertinent sentence I have
made
on that subject since it is only opinion.

The thought struck me that someone may just be mixing up pertinent and impertinent.
(Excuse me if it's me being impertinent now!)

[Hornlist] Re:Things to listen to

2003-10-30 Thread Graham Jarvis
Hi John.

Here's my list: (I've missed out things already mentioned)

Bach - Brandenburg concerti 1 (+2); B minor mass (in particular the Agnus Dei - but
it's all great music)
Beethoven - ALL the symphonies (Seriously! - maybe No1 can be left out but
otherwise)
Haydn - Symphonies 31, 51, 73
Fibich - Symphony No 1 (Not well known but some wonderful horn parts!)
Lars Erik Larson - God in Disguise (Förklädd Gud) The prelude has one of the most
beuatifl horn solos I know. Naxos have a good low-price recording.
Tchaikowsky - Symphonies 4,5 + 6 - No 5 is a must!!
Rimsky-Korsakov - Scheherazade
Dvorak - New World symphony, Cello concerto
Gabrieli - 'Brass music' (Not really horn but wonderful anyway)

The list could go on and on - there's so much wonderful music out there.

Happy listening,
Graham

[Hornlist] The naming of horns

2003-05-30 Thread Graham Jarvis
Until it was (more or less) housetrained my horn was called Attilla. Now that we've
got to know each other better names don't seem important - except when we miss an
important entry - the names my horn gets called then are mostly unprintable.
Graham
(Actually - when I think about it - maybe it's ME they're calling names??!)

[Hornlist] VPO - what's going on?

2003-03-15 Thread Graham Jarvis

O.K - while I'm on line
A week or so ago I watched a televised concert with the Vienna Phil. I can't remember
now what they were playing or where, but I was struck by the fact that one of the two
hornplayers was playing what seemed to be a full-double german horn while the other
(principal) hornist was playing a Vienna horn.
I thought that the VPO only used Vienna horns - have I been wrong about this or was
this concert an exception.
Can anyone shed any light?
Thanks,
Graham

[Hornlist] Up-close sound

2003-03-15 Thread Graham Jarvis

Hi,
What does all this say about microphone placement?
I was recently involved in a local radio recording with a small wind ensemble. The
recording engineer insisted on lacing my microphone directly behind my bell. I tried
to argue but he wasn't interested in changing the position. Is this normal? What is
customary in this kind of situation?
All the best,
Graham

[Hornlist] Re: Denis Wick mpc

2003-03-14 Thread Graham Jarvis
Hi,
I've been playing on a Denis Wick No. 5 for over 20 years and never even thought about
trying something else. (Well - hardly ever and even then only out of curiosity.) It
works for me. In fact I'm now onto my third mpc - back to gold-plated after 10 years
of silver. Of course it took work to develop both high and low registers - but it's
the embouchure that produces the notes - not the mouthpiece.
