Re: [Hornlist] Need a reccomendation for school horns
Mike, If your school horns are Olds made in Fullerton, CA by F.E. Olds and Sons they are old (no pun intended). Olds went out of business around 1978. There is a new company that bought the intellectual property rights and use the name but more than likely their horns are made by Amati. One way you could solve two problems at once would be to eat a lot of greasy oily snacks during intermission, like potato chips, onion rings, chicken wings, spare ribs, donuts,... Just remember to spit out all of the remaining solids before you play again. As you play, the residual oils in your mouth will gradually get into your horn and work their way into your valves. Cooking oil and animal fats are generally pretty heavy, so as they mix with your regular oil over time, the stuff will coat the moving parts of your valves, and the clanking problem ought to go away, even if the problem is a loose bearing plate. Remember to place a napkin on your lap, even if you play off the knee. { David Goldberg: [EMAIL PROTECTED] } { Math Dept, Washtenaw Community College } { Ann Arbor Michigan } ___ post: [EMAIL PROTECTED] set your options at http://music.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
Re: [Hornlist] Need a reccomendation for school horns
That is correct, they are F.E. Olds and Sons. The new Olds (yeah, yeah, I know) seems to take pride in making cheap, terrible tubas. Three new tubas were bought for our high-school this year. My band director was a little clueless and didn't realize what he was doing when he bought them because when they came in, he was more than a little shocked to see the Olds logo on them. He meant to buy a different brand of tuba that supposedly are pretty good. What he got was Olds. He meant to buy a different brand of tuba that supposedly are pretty good. What he got was Olds. Sometimes a band director will request something very specific but the final decision rests with the school or district purchasing agent who will use generic specifications and put out bids. The degree of success that one often has in requesting what one wants is often times based on how well written the request is, and how amenable and reasonable the purchasing agent is. High school music directors are subject to forces and influences beyond them. There are simply too many people in administration and support staff who fail to completely understand the role of music in the comprehensive curriculum. Of course not every school and every school district is that way, but there are enough out there that are ! If they are quiet/tight the problem is probably the end/back bearing. It is a simple and inexpensive repair to trim the back bearing so it seats further into the casing and stops the noisy end play. Heavy oil will not solve the problem. IMHO it is better to solve the problem than to mask the symptoms. Scott: I'm sure your can't get them new at that price - but there is always a plethora of them used in excellent condition - the same goes for the Holtons. I usually suggest that this level of horns (the starter doubles) should be purchased used - because you can get them at very discounted prices - and you will never lose money when it comes time to resell them assuming that they are treated well. I guess the best comparison would be buying a new car - vs. one with a few thousand miles - You save a bundle on the showroom smell Currently I sell used 667's and 668's for around 16-1800. Goodluck! I wasn't aware one could get 667s/668s for around $2000. Who is offering this price right now? (I'm Interested on behalf of my students.) Re: [Hornlist] Need a reccomendation for school horns
All I know is what not to get. My school has generously supplied us with Olds horns (I know!) they are, to say the least, awful. On average, I get the sound of a cow on its last straw. Today, out of nowhere, my third valve completely locked into place. The horn will be going out for repairs for the second time in three weeks. It's pretty terrible. I really want to know if anybody has ever bothered to clean one of those horns because the amount of spit I produce on the school horn is about a third of what my King Eroica does. I think that there is mildew and mold sucking up the saliva on the inside of my horn. In all honesty, it wouldn't surprise me. On a completely unrelated note, my first valve on the Eroica has started to clank when I push it down. My private teacher said to get some Spacefillers valve oil because it's slightly thicker. Re: [Hornlist] Need a reccomendation for school horns
My two cents worth: (I'm assuming these horns are for high school students?) I am a big Conn 8D (Holton 188) advocate - if this is a private party purchasing the instrument intending to continue to college (or further). The throat and bell are so large on these models, however, that the average school student will have a very difficult time filling up the horn, controlling pitch, etc. If I were buying instruments for instiutional use, I'd look at the Holtion 179. Much smaller throat and bell make it easy for any player to focus and sound good on. I agree that SOME of the holtons do sound 'trombonish', but those are mostly the student models (378). As any hornist, I certainly would not purchase Jupiter or any chinese or off-brand instrument. The Yamaha students models are notorious for terrible intonation and rotors; be careful if you choose to go that route. That's not one of those unplayable Blessing-Getzen compensating double horns, is it? You know, the ones that force the left thumb too far back because of how the tubing radiates off the 4th valve, placing way too much load on the left pinky. -- Alan Cole, rank amateur McLean (Fairfax County), Virginia, USA. One horn to bear in mind is the Getzen Capri 561 (http://www.osmun.com/prod/Getzen/getzen_horn.htm). As a technician/player I'd go with the Yamaha 667/668 or an earlier used model. The Holton 178/179's of course will always do fine. All of these models are tried and tested (unlike the Getzen). Bob: I hadn't heard of this horn before. How does it compare to the Yamaha 567 or 667, or the Conn 10Ds in terms of playability and response. I ask because I have a large number of students, and I always have at least one or two students looking for entry-level/intermediate-level double horns. Also, what's the approximate pricing of the horn? Thanks, Scott Pappal P.S. Re: [Hornlist] Need a reccomendation for school horns
Kipp: On that type of budget, you could take a look at: Yamaha 567 (Should be around $1575 through NAMM) Conn 8D, 9D, 10D, or 11D (Without the cut bell, you could find these as low as around $2200.) I would not advocate the cheaper horns such as Jupiter or any of the Chinese models - they're just not worth it, and they won't hold up to everyday public school wear-and-tear. Holton horns are not for me, the sound is way too trombonish, and the quality control of the valves is terrible. These are just my recommendations.
