[HOT] Share Your Voice! Short Survey on Motivation in Online Civic Action Initiatives

2016-03-08 Thread Jennie Phillips
Hey HOT members!

Ever wondered….
Why do people engage in online civic action initiatives?
What motivates them to stay engaged?
Or how does engagement in online networks differ between crisis or humanitarian
 response?

We are currently conducting a study with the Digital Public Square
project to try and answer some of these
questions. Our aim is to better understand what motivates citizens to
participate in online civic action and how sustained motivation might connect
to the longevity of online civic action initiatives.

We need your help! If you can spare 5-7 minutes of your time, we would love if
you could complete our survey below. Data collected is completely anonymous,
and is available in English, Spanish, French or Portuguese.

https://loewenlab.az1.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_1UmqLdLceGfGBAV=hot=email

As we're on a rather tight timeline, please respond prior to Sunday, March
13th. Our final report will be completed at the end of March, and will be
publicly accessible on the Digital Public Square
website. For a more detailed summary of the
study, see the bottom of this email.

If you have further questions please contact Jennie
Phillips -

Thank you so much.

The Civic Participation Project: Research Concept Summary

The use of digital communication tools (software and hardware) has allowed
citizens to engage in civic action online in new and powerful ways. Popular
media tends to present this form of civic participation as short-lived, in part
– perhaps – because online campaigns have had greater success in generating
short-term impact than in sustaining the extensive, repeated and in-depth
engagement that drives lasting change. But is online civic participation
necessarily limited to exercising impact only in the short term? Or, are there
tools and techniques that allow for greater longevity so that online citizen
engagement can lead to long-term influence? This is an issue of interest to
researchers, governments and civil society alike as each tries to come to grips
with a political phenomenon reshaping political life across the globe.

The Digital Public Square at the University of Toronto is examining why
citizens choose to participate, and to continue participating, in online
campaigns. We have looked at social-psychological research into why individuals
participate in sociopolitical movements and political economy research into how
such participation affects sociopolitical processes. We would like to
contribute new material to the conversation by further studying how individual
motivations connect to civic actions and, if possible, political outcomes. To
that end, we are conducting surveys with people involved in online civic action
campaigns to look at the following research question: “What techniques best
motivate individual citizens to take civic action online in a sustained manner?

Hi all, a bit of advice, if you have time

In the task Blake posted, some of the buildings are too difficult
distinguish individually. However, I can see that there is a whole block of
buildins. Is it ok to trace and tag the whole block as building=yes?

For example, in the south-westerly corner of

Re: [HOT] "connecting" buildings

2016-03-08 Thread Mike Thompson
Blake,

Thanks for your quick response!

Of course we will do the mapping in the manner specified by those
requesting the data. However I do find that validating data where the
buildings share nodes is a little more difficult. For example, if one of
the two buildings is not squared (in the data), when you do square it, then
the other building is likely to become out of square... The same type of
thing applies if one of the buildings needs to be rotated a little to
better match the imagery.

Hi Mike,

It is really generally true, but in dense urban areas often the
buildings do share a wall. Hopefully we can get some feedback from the
folks in Dar as to what is typical in that environment.

One of the things that make dense urban mapping a challenge.

Hello HOT community,

I am excited and inspired by all of the events being hosted by HOTties in
celebration of International Women's Day! You don't need to participate in
an event to join the movement, though -- click here

to select and download an OpenStreetMap-related International Women's Day
pledge image that you can share/post on your social media accounts.

We'll be celebrating this entire month, so please think about making an
image your Facebook or Twitter cover photo for all of March.

Make sure you use #PledgeforParity *and *#map4women in all of your posts so
we can connect and share!

Here's my pledge:

[HOT] New mapping projects that could use some experienced mappers

2016-03-08 Thread Blake Girardot

Hi all,

I just posted a new project to map a small, but very dense urban area
(we have a few more in the same region coming up).

This kind of mapping is a real challenge in the city center areas and it
is slightly complicated due to the very tall nature of most of the
buildings. It gets easier as you get farther out from the city center.

If you have a fair amount of mapping experience, it would really help if
you could give it some of your time, it is really difficult to get these
projects mapped due to the precision mapping needed.

And for anyone interested, I created a short (6 min.) video explaining
how to map in this project and dense urban areas in general that just
about anyone, new and experienced mappers, might benefit from watching:

HOT excels in emergencies, but this isn't one. The label "unclassified
road" has changed to "minor road". This is a good thing
(https://github.com/openstreetmap/iD/issues/2916) and something we can
easily get our minds around.

Indeed - and it should make training people easier, not harder.
https://github.com/openstreetmap/iD/issues/2916 was opened in response
to a missing maps event where people were instructed to use
highway=unclassified for unknown roads instead of highway=road.

iD has never had a one-to-one correspondence between preset titles and
tag values, nor for that matter does JOSM. WIth translations it's fairly
obvious that this can't be true for all languages. Additionally, iD is
in en_US by default and OSM tags are approximately in en_GB, which is
another source of differences between preset names and tags.

[HOT] International Women's Day 2016 - One way to show your support for diversity in the OSM community - osm wiki userboxes

2016-03-08 Thread Blake Girardot

Hi all,

As part of International Women's Day 2016, I took a pledge to support
women, girls and gender diversity in the HOT and OSM communities.

One small way to share my commitment is that I created and OSM wiki
"Userbox" to show my support for women in the OSM community.

If you are an osm wiki user, you may or may not know about userboxes,
they are like badges that you can show on your osm wiki user page.

For example this is my osm wiki userpage (ingore all the junk on there
and just look at the userboxes section :)

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:Bgirardot

If you are a wiki user it is easy to add, you just need to edit your
wikiuser page. Some directions are provided on the userbox page itself:

Re: [HOT] Protecting girls at risk of FGM in Tanzania by mapping their villages - International Womens' Day event

2016-03-08 Thread Denis Carriere
Hey Pete,

It might be better to have the data as a CSV instead so when you add the
data to josm it doesn't get confused and merges into your existing osm
layer.

Ideally we should set up the data that it only downloads the subset of the
tasking manager tile, this can be added in the individual tile. I've seen a
few tasks that have done this in the past.

Unfortunately I won't have time to do it until tonight, maybe anyone on
this mailing list can help out with this?

area. We have made a quick TMS layer to add as a background in JOSM to help
with this.

The spreadsheet based workflow is definitely the easier option for an

Re: [HOT] Protecting girls at risk of FGM in Tanzania by mapping their villages - International Womens' Day event

2016-03-08 Thread Arun Ganesh
The data team at Mapbox is currently working on the TM. We're tracking our
observations here: https://github.com/mapbox/mapping/issues/159

One of the issues with using the TM was that it is very hard to spot the
location of schools in the import layer without losing context of the task
area. We have made a quick TMS layer to add as a background in JOSM to help
with this.

tms[99]:
https://api.mapbox.com/v4/pratikyadav.d2f92211/{zoom}/{x}/{y}.png?access_token=pk.eyJ1IjoicHJhdGlreWFkYXYiLCJhIjoiMTA2YWUxNjRkNmFmZGQ4YzAxZWFiNDk0NDM1YjE1YjAifQ.4P6N5dNmA_WQXd3BsJvu5w

The spreadsheet based workflow is definitely the easier option for an
inexperienced mapper.

Dear openstreetmappers,

I just got offered a Belgian chocolate. It's 8th march today!

Because they all have a busy agenda the 8th of march and did not found
the time to really get together today, the West African girls decided
that from 9 o'clock (UTC) they will start mapping on task
http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/1588 to celebrate international
woman's day and of course to support the Togolese community at the
same time.

Hereby I welcome everybody to join the west african girls in their mapping!
Let's do this together, man and woman as a team. Not only today, but
all the other days...
