Google Cyclone Pam Crisis map shows the track of the cyclone. We see that north
of Vanuatu, it does not pass close to islands. But there were report of some
vulnerability of islands in
Kiribati.https://mapsengine.google.com/06831253009698256830-04330043000251498305-4/mapview/?authuser=0

Individual contributors can go there, map and evaluate if this needs more care.

With the dense forests, we can sometimes see partial roofs, which let us
confirm various isoleted residential areas.  In general, this is probably
metallic roofs. I have not spot any huts so far or more traditionnal housings
in these areas.

To document the mapping, it would greatly help to have pictures.
The international charter just activated and this should provide us new
imagery.

It is important for us to have feedbacks from the field about the work we do,
the places where people think we should revise.

Important aspect of remote islands is indigenous tribes with non-Western

The World Food Program (UN WFP) plan to use our data as their team are

Is there any other alternative(s) from the Geofabrik ones? Since the file

There are several Canadians (mostly MDs, families) with recent field

strategic assets (landing sites for rotary wing) hospital, etc. but also
trying to document location of small indigenous "tribes" on island. Hope to
have that working tomorrow Vancouver time.

data exports from OSM we provide to the humanitarian organizations
responding to Vanuatu.

You have more than doubled the amount of map data in OSM about this
nation in a little less than 24 hours!

Congratulations!

Once again the HOT community is rising to a challenge and it is not
going unnoticed by our current and future partners on the ground.

I created an .obf file for Vanatu taken from the most recent
2015-03-14-21:22:02 GMT Geofabrik Oceania extract.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/fuf7bcz4mr6jjya/Vanatu_2015-03-14T212202Z.obf?dl=0

I tested it locally in OSMAnd and it worked fine.

2015-03-15 Thread Rafael Avila Coya
Hi, Severin:

By 2010 I had my first smartphone, but unfortunately I took almost all
my pictures with a camera, so no geolocation.

I have many pictures that show a long way around Tanna island in the
south, and others of hamlets, small villages.

I can only geolocalize a few of them, using my memory and some waypoints
that I still have in my Garmin. I remember to get some tracks, but it
seems that I deleted them or can't find them.

I'm using some of this info for mapping in Tanna. I have more photos of
Espiritu Santo and the Torres group in the North, but those islands it
seems they weren't affected.

I am uploading photos here:

Cheers,

Rafael.

prepare an export in obf format for OSMAnd?

I created an .obf file for Vanatu taken from the most recent
2015-03-14-21:22:02 GMT Geofabrik Oceania extract.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/fuf7bcz4mr6jjya/Vanatu_2015-03-14T212202Z.obf?dl=0

I tested it locally in OSMAnd and it worked fine.

2015-03-15 Thread Pierre Béland

The extent of the disaster zone to cover from the north to the south is 650 km
long. The post-assessment evaluation will be difficult and the pre-disaster
informations should be very usefull for the response.
In this context, we want to trace all the buildings. This will be difficult
with the dense tropical forests and  the MapBox imagery lower resolution as
compared to Bing. Use Bing wherever it is available. Complete with MapBox. In
the Task Manager Job 945, we provide instructions to facilitate tracing with
MapBox. This is a little hack with specifying tms:17.

Please do your best and thanks again for your effort.

The tag natural=beach is the recommended tag for actual beaches. The
common areas are different. Generally they are rectangular area that
is covered in grass like a small park. I don't see so many of these
in Vanautu like we do in west Africa though, so there may not be so
many to map. Of course map them if they are there, but don't expect
that they must be there.

Great Crowdsourcing effort from the community again. Thanks to all for this
quick response. Be assure that the International community is quite happy about
this.
We repeated what we did for the first day of the Ebola response. In 20 hours,
we covered all the priority islands to map (both jobs are about 99% completed).

There are no discussions yet with our partners about the next steps that would
be necessary.

Validation + Communication towers + landing areas

I want to enhance the map while we do the validation step. Please, follow the
following intructions :
- Spot communication towers even if this is uneasy- For each village, assure
that a common space has been added (leisure=common) and trace major buildings
http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/943
http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/944

Coordination with the DHNetwork
We started a Skype communication room a few hours ago with the DHNetwork
partners.  Still incomplete News with the communication problems, the bad
weather and all the remote villages. An update indicates that many villages
were swept (up to 90% destroyed).
Jean-Guilhem collaborates with Jus Mackinnon to prepare an Impact map showing
pictures of various areas.

For your second TM project, Pierre, I've tweaked the description to say that

We can spot any roads and settlements but in most squares there's none of this.
There is a fair bit of work we could do in Vanuatu on coastline refinements
(lots of coarse PGS data) adding of missing natural=beach areas, and rivers.
Not very important data, but it aids navigation.

To decrease the chance of edit conflicts on coastlines I've split some of them
into smaller ways. Could do more of this. When doing this with a fresh island,
they are often in as a single way which also carries a place=island and name
tag. That needs converting to a multipolygon.

For this Class 5 cyclone (highest level), as powerful as the Haiyan Typhoon in

Baldwin Lonsdale, the president of Vanuatu, assisting at the Sendai, Japan
conference, appealed to the international community to support the Vanuatu
population in response to such a calaminity.

This 800 km long archipel have a population of 270,000 persons spread in a
multitude of islands.

A first report from UNICEF reports 44 deaths in the Penama province (33,000
people).
Going further south, the cyclone passed closer to Port Vila then was expected.
More then 2,000 people took refuge in shelters.

Note that with the communication cuts, it can take days before we have an exact

quite sad.
With these unconnected villages, it is important to locate them and identify
helicopter landing space. But with dense forests, it is hard sometimes to spot
houses. They seem to be largely covered by trees. Yes, pictures or any trace

The communications are cut with the Vunuatu Archipel. From the information I
gathered, I prepared a task wihth the islands that seems more severely hit.
I invite you to map these rapidly as Red Cross and other prepare to deploy. We
will creat other tasks if necessary when more information is available.
We want to mark roads, residential areas, possible shelters, helicopter
landing, communication towers. See http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/943

This is a category 5 Cyclone, the highest category and many deaths reported.
ReliefWeb map, March 13, shows that the Islands south of Port Vila should have
been the more affected.

I see two islands of about 30 km x 30 km and smaller islands.
A mix of Bing and MapBox imagery can be used since cloudy imagery in various
areas.

Vanuatu Archipel (800 km long) was severely hit by the Pam Cyclone.  I started
discussion with Dale about this. Not yet sure at this point if Red Cross will
deploy.
We start to document for the islands hit and the imagery available.
I first look at the situation this morning, I saw dispersed residential areas
not always connected by roads.
 Preliminary infos
ReliefWeb as published March 12 a map of the probable path. I cannot load the
pdf but we see the area that was probably hit.
