Re: Tectia for ZOS STC Hang - Nessus Intrusion Detection Scans?
Everyone, I appreciate everyone's response - to bring everyone up to date I am working with network security team (owners of Nessus scans) and we are trying to isolate with Nessus vendor (unfortunately not much help - they point to us working with Tectia vendor which we already are - gotta love the finger pointing) but there are literally 100's of these scans packed into one iteration which runs ~30 mins so today we plan on running wireshark to try and "trap" offending activity that locks up the address space. Dennis Mruz, to answer your question / point we've updated the SSHD2_config file to latest updates that vendor / development recommends and still hang condition persists. Any other ideas please share but this is a fleeting one to "trap". Thanks again. Tectia for ZOS STC Hang - Nessus Intrusion Detection Scans?
Hello All, Pardon the interrupt on all the religious discussions surrounding Python vs. Rexx (count me in the camp of a REXX biggot given my years in ZVM and ZOS) I see Rexx as a swiss army knife for so many tasks in our never ending myriad of tasks as Sysprogs, etc. - I do though wish Rexx could process SMF records better though. BTW - I have never have done any OO Rexx tasks so can't comment on that world but certainly hope to at some point given all the great comments surrounding it's capabilities. Now to the real reason for my post: We run Tectia for ZOS in our environment (SSH.COM). During our attempts to upgrade Tectia for ZOS to 6.7.1 it became very apparent the base SSHD2 started task would hang under certain conditions on our Sandbox LPAR. After much further investigation it is clear the trigger to the hang conditions is because of our external Nessus port scans that run periodically against our mainframe LPAR's. The "hang" condition issue has been reported to the vendor support team in which their initial response was to halt our scans which won't fly with our security teams of course. Tectia SSH Dev. team seems stymied on the issue although they are trying to recreate in lab environment (many debug logs sent to them - they don't appear to like dumps - prefer the debug logs). The hang strictly presents itself in the SSHD2 operator interface (in other words "F SSHD2, VERSION" & "P SSHD2" commands are no longer responsive, etc. and the task has to be cancelled to restart started task). My key questions are: 1. Anyone else out there that is running this product on ZOS (We are running ZOS 2.5)? 2. If so, anyone else experienced any similar issues? If so did you figure out workaround for the issue to avoid the hang conditions caused by the port scans? If you prefer to talk offline on this please email me. DFSORT Fixed Records to CSV - Trim Extraneous Blanks?
Hello All, I looked back at history of DFSORT questions / answers and didn't see anything that quite matched up on this. My question is the following - I have a sharp App Developer I work with who is very good with SAS but can't quite get SAS to do what he wants - long story. In a nutshell he has a very large input file (~500K records) that are in fixed length format / fixed position format that he wants to extract select fields from the input records and then the output records will be written in CSV format. Some of the fields are variable length in size but he knows max length of each of the fields. He is interested in using DFSORT ICETOOL if possible, but he and I do not see anything in DFSORT App Guide that allows you to strip off extraneous blanks (TRIM function?) at the end of these input fields before it is packed into the output CSV file. Is this doable in DFSORT? If so, can help point me to some examples / suggested reading / command statements? Dump Analysis Best Training / Documentation
Hello All, Way back in the day I used to read dumps fairly handily in the MVS/XA era. But have been away for so long I know things have evolved but appears everything is basically still intact relative to ASCB to PRB relationships. I'm working on a hang/loop condition that prevents started task from being stopped normally (P STC) and have taken SVC dump and want to interpret it. I'm somewhat fluent with IPCS and can bring up via panels, but from there am struggling with where to go to identify where the hang/loop condition is happening. Any shares of doc, presentations, tips, etc. are much appreciated as I still think this is one of the lost arts that in the end to be a top notch systems programmer you need to be able to interpret. I know IBM used to teach whole classes on this but believe much of that has gone way of dodo bird... Thanks in advance. Homegrown ZOS Dashboards?
Hello all you smart seasoned ZOS vets out there. We all know that ZOS contains a vast landscape of key mission critical applications and components running 7x24x365. I'm quite curious about this sujbect having spent a considerable time of my career in the performance / capacity arena. But what I am most curious about is whether anyone out there has either developed or knows of a very robust homegrown ZOS mgmt / executive health dashboard out there? Possibly you did something with SAS/MXG or other toolsets (REXX, open source, etc.)? I'm envisioning something that might have red, yellow, green sections that inspects data for ZOS ranging from SLA's, syslog, SMF data, performance data (response times, batch cycle completions, etc.), storage usage data, security data and have it all rollup into single view that is adaptable to a particular environment (not tied to anyone product - so for instance in security whatever solutions should be ubiquitous whether running RACF, Top Secret, or ACF2). I know there are paid for tools as well and if you don't have anything homegrown maybe you have a favorite one of those that doesn't cost arm & leg? - possibly something open source that is easily adaptable. There is no right or wrong answer here but wanted to just throw this out there to gather everyone's collective experiences, thoughts, and best ideas. May the games (I mean ideations) begin. Re: Anyone exploiting ZEDC?
David, We are using it - biggest benefit so far has been with our backups in converting DFSMSDSS (ADRDSSU) backups using "ZPREF" option. It reduced runtime on backups significantly (50%+) with also some reduction in CPU cycles. We also are using it in other scenarios. You do need to test though - think biggest areas of concern are with vendors that don't use standard access methods - few of note SAS, NOMAD - sure many others. Feel free to contact me at sest...@gmail.com but am a big proponent of using. I think I have white paper somewhere but need to track down. One of the reasons we went this route is we are starting to exploit pervasive encryption which for most part requires extended format datasets (also required for ZEDC). Best practice is to compress before you encrypt. One other area we exploited was DFHSM and activated that so it now compresses migrated and backed up datasets - hard to measure improvement, but am sure is much more efficient than prior settings. I know that large VSAM files see benefits as well - but just ensure you test before going to far in that direction - one other point - ZFS have the ability to compress as well which can be advantageous - especially when vendors send large ZFS packages - such as SAS does. Areas we haven't exploited yet but are intriguing are JES spool space compression as well as SMF data compression. One other key suggestion to look at is to run a ZBNA (free software from IBM) study as it helps you identify good candidate datasets from your batch job cycles. As others have noted it doesn't make sense to compress things that are relatively small - but do try and apply the 80/20 rule here. Anytime you can do less I/O in batch jobs is always a good thing of course and win-win situation! ZOS Sending Logs to Sumologic Experience?
All, We are embarking on an endeavor to explore sending logics to a tool called Sumologic(sumologic.com). For those who are unaware, Sumologic is a competitor to Splunk and contains a very powerful real time log parsing analytics engine which can be used to build dashboards, alerts, and more. My basic question is has anyone heard of or actually been involved in devising ways to send ZOS logs into Sumalogic - our initial efforts will be security related, but for now am just asking if anyone has any experience in this realm at all? Or maybe you are doing something similar to Splunk? Technical Reason? - Why you can't encrypt load libraries (PDSE format)?
Everyone, Our team is knee deep into pervasive encryption rollout on ZOS 2.5 and despite the fact such functionality has been out for years by IBM to do this, it is quite surprising how many software vendors when you contact them they have no clue what you're talking about - that is a complete aside - I'm not going to name vendors here but if you want some examples you can contact me offline. My true reason for composing this is that we've discovered the inability to encrypt load libraries - even in PDSE format. I've yet to get a straight answer from IBM on why this is?... Is this a "giant" technical hurdle for IBM? Or is it just cause there hasn't been anyone who raised the need yet? If the latter does this capability interest others here if I were to raise as an IBM idea - would you vote for it? I know this seems innocuous, but we'd like to encrypt as much as possible in our environment and due to Top Secret deficiencies we have to encrypt at high level qualifier level (HLQ) (all or nothing under each HLQ unfortunately). Given we have load module libraries under many differ HLQ's this is posing difficulties in moving forward with our rollout when an HLQ does have one or more load module libraries as part of that HLQ. You can only imagine the pain of renaming a load library given all the JCL, etc that is referencing that library name. Also, while encrypting load module libraries might seem a little far fetched, there are of course many malicious viruses that have been launched by injecting code into a suspecting piece of code. So two questions: 1. Why has IBM not already provided such functionality - can anyone speak to the technical hurdles to provide? 2. If I were to submit an IBM idea, can I count on this community for some backing here to help in upvoting such an idea submission? Migrating Loadlibs from PDSE to PDS?
Seasons Greetings all, I know this might sound like a strange request, but we are exploring what if any options there are to migrate load libraries from PDSE (version 1 or 2) back to traditional basic PDS's. It appears this is highly restricted based on my experiences trying to perform via IEBCOPY and ISPF 3.3 (which just involkes IEBCOPY under the covers)? Any thoughts/experiences on ways to do this or is it just one of those once you are there the "train don't go in reverse" situations? Thanks in advance for any ideas/suggestions. Re: Performance i/o problem
Assuming you are running ZOS in native mode (not as guest under ZVM) where your dump/restores are occurring, I would definitely look at RMF reports - my first place to look is RMF Monitor III online - if not active, turn on with the recording VSAM files - typically "F RMF, S III" - this should show what is delaying / impeding the restore job. One other question - are you restoring from tape or disk - what is the source device type you are recovering from. We recently activated ZEDC on our LPAR's and found out dumping / restoring in DFDSS compressed mode speeds up our backups substantially (like by factor 3:1) if you have that option? You have to specify the proper "ZCOMPRESS" option on the ADRDSSU dump statement to take advantage if you have that feature / option active for your system / processor - we are running on Z15 hardware. Lessons Learned - Mass Extended Format DS Conversion - ZOS 2.5
All, We are in the midst of rolling out pervasive encryption in our ZOS 2.5 customer environment. To get there of course we need to move to extended format datasets (sequential, VSAM, etc) which we have minimal exposure / experience with today (We have multiple 100K's of datasets in our catalogs across 4 LPAR's. We also will be leveraging hardware compression (ZEDC) as we migrate things as well towards path to pervasive encryption (PV) of course following best practice to compress before encrypting. Have reviewed redbooks on PV, extended format, and hardware compression (experiences with hardware compression so far have been outstanding - especially in our DFDSS backup processing). What I'm looking for are any gotchas / lessons learned / real life experiences in embarking on this mass migration from basic format datasets over to extended compressed format DSN's and encryption that aren't documented in standard doc or redbooks. Or maybe you ran across or developed some tools to aid in such large scale migrations? SAS for ZOS 9.4.8 Install/Upgrade Experiences?
Everyone, I support a secure government environment that has limited ability to connect directly to vendor software download sites and am embarking on effort to upgrade our SAS for ZOS from 9.4.7 to 9.4.8 - you would think simple / simon but is my first time with this software package install/upgrade and am struggling with the process SAS dictates to get software from there sites. They use a tool called SAS download manager - one for ZOS, Windows, Linux, etc. Curious for those sites that have SAS for ZOS, how are you getting software from SAS site to your ZOS system(s)? SAS does not offer any sort of FTP like functionality and forces you to use download manager which unfortunately is not so simple to use - at least not on ZOS. SAS packaging for ZOS relies very heavily on Unix System Services for the packaging, install, maintenance, and deployments/customization. One other item, if you have engaged SAS support on regular basis, how would you rate your SAS support experience? Mine to say the least is challenging - one of the issues we've run into under SAS 9.4.7 is interfacing SAS 9.4.7 with CICS web services and ATTLS - they seem to not be too savvy in this space - found out they do not have / nor test CICS in there ZOS / lab test environment at all and we have programmer who has written code for SAS to talk to CICS web services to extract information. This is one of the reasons we are moving to SAS 9.4.8 as they repackage the OpenSSL such that it now relies on system SSL libraries / encryption routines vs. packing there own. Anyways if interested in talking further / sharing experiences / or maybe have some good contacts relative to SAS, please let me know. Appreciate any/all ideas. Open Job Positions? - ZOS / Performance / Tuning
Hello Everyone, I know this is primarily a "technical discussion" set of forums. But wanted to post this anyways. Little of my background - I worked at IBM 34+ years in a number of positions, but my predominant area of expertise was in MVS (SP, XA, ESA), OS390, etc. working in systems programming arena. I also am highly skilled in performance and tuning with deep experience with tuning (RMF, SAS, Omegamon, and others). I was the team lead for the MVS performance team in Boulder, CO for several years and got certified in this discipline. I performed these activities for ~20 years, but my skills are a bit rusty / out of date as I then moved into more leadership roles latter part of my career but know I can catch up relatively quickly and have been perusing docs, etc to do just that. I also have experience with VM as well - but not as extensive as my MVS years. My whole IBM career was spent in internal IS, Consulting, and outsourcing arena - so was in services role for 34+ years. Anyways I'm back looking for potential job positions if anyone is looking or knows of available positions - happy to share resume if anyone would like to talk further - my email is sest...@gmail.com.
