The only other source is the complete download of a collection kit from 
Publications center and using Softcopy Librarian against the descriptor file 
(.des) file therein.

It, however, will only be as current as what each individual product decides to 
put in and many have moved away
from any species of BookManager.

I would if I knew where to get one. Softcopy Librarian offers only
choices based on the /epubs/df/ebrscrt.des file, and that has the
problems I mentioned above: The comments for the files it points to
don't seem to be up to date (e.g. the z/OS 1.13 collection is dated
Sep 2012, even though the update date on the directory is Sept 2013),
so it's hard to know what's a new file and what isn't. And then the
actual collection .des files don't seem to have the new material in
them, e.g. COBOL V5R1. Or rather, there exists no file *that is
pointed to by a top-level .des file* that contains a list of the COBOL
V5R1 pubs. Since IBM has disabled the ability to look at the
directory, there is no way I know of to find these things other than
by discovering an external reference of some kind, which can't be
automated.

Can you point me at one of these "newer" files so I'm sure we're
talking about the same thing?

My bad, typo.  The individual product schedules do not all regularly fall on 
the zOS platform schedule. 
Base elements usually are on the zOS platform  but products like OSA, SMP/E, 
NFS, ICKDSF, etc don't necessarily have to be. 
Certainly the languages (PL/I, COBOL) may not completely match the platform 
schedule.

root directory of the collection.  At least at this level, IBM is keeping the

ObAlanSherman No; for anything critical one must ensure that one uses
the correct manual for the level of code that one is using. A manual
that is too new can be as bad as a manual that is too old. Some of the
posters here are running OS/390; do you really suggest that they use
manuals for z/OS V2?

All the electronic-only deliverables SHOULD have the .des file (it is usually 
in the root).  It still works with Softcopy Librarian (SCL).
I usually test by installing the electronic-only then starting SCL to see if 
updates occur (and usually they do as more products are
NOT on the main platform schedule then are on the platform schedule).

You shouldn't have to build your own shelves, at least not for "products", as 
the XKS shelf acts exactly like a BKS for each product on the electronic 
collection kits.  Each product has an XKS shelf. zOS, at least, also has some 
other general interest shelves, for example:  "messages and codes",  commands, 
diagnosis. This is also the same way it worked on the physical media.  

Softcopy Librarian (SCL) works with either BKS or XKS.

Unlike many of you, I keep copies, as PDFs, of only the manuals I
access very frequently.  They are now so readily available and so easy
to download that I do not keep, for example IMS manuals, which I look
at only infrequently.

Others will of course have different usage/reference patterns.

I also understand that bookshelves are convenient, but one sometimes
pays a high price for this convenience.  Their component manuals are
often updated on different schedules, and these changes in
atomic-manual availabilities are not always reflected at all promptly
in the bookshelves that contain them.

For anything critical one must anyway be sure that one is consulting
the most current version of a manual [or its repackaged replacement in
some other manual], and it is really quite convenient to just download
it after ascertaining its publication number.

I simply meant the .des files that contain pointers to the actual
books, whether in .boo or .pdf format, and the metadata necessary to
decide if a book is current or has been superceded. It looks as though
IBM is not maintaining those files, perhaps because Softcopy Librarian
has gone away along with Softcopy Reader, even though SL supports the
IBM-preferred PDF format quite nicely.

Softcopy Librarian is pretty damn easy. 
While I prefer Bookmanager to PDF for navigation and search, I can live with 
PDF.
But, I really don't like the idea of building my own shelves and I certainly am 
not interested in significantly increasing my time to download individual 
products.

A nice thing about Softcopy Librarian is that I can get it started on a new 
collection when I leave for the day and it runs overnight downloading 
everything.

For those many of us wanting to maintain a complete and current set of
books for some subject area, Softcopy Librarian provides a nice
approach. But SL itself does not contain the hard part. Rather, it
depends on the continued maintenance of IBM's indexes; something IBM
is showing little sign of doing.

Whilst at Share I picked up a DVD of (what I thought was) the 1.13 manuals. 
Turned out to be a (Windows only) exe for what appears to be a local install of 
Infocentre - presumably including manuals as the thing was 1.8 Gig. No doco 
included of course.
Went and found a Win7 instance and tried it - no luck; failed trying to connect 
to a port on localhost. Huh ?. Another sysprog also failed to install it.

That DVD is now in the bin - my comments on Infocentre (local or cloud) 
probably correspond pretty closely to Daves. Being predominately a Linux user, 
I tend to go find the PDFs and pull them down with a script and build an index 
page as well. That way I can read them anywhere.

I did a little poking around, since it wasn't obvious where Softcopy
Librarian was getting its info. You set up an Internet "source" such as
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com (I can't remember if SR comes with this built
in, or if I got it from somewhere else, but I think the former.) So when
you click on it, SL does an HTML GET for /epubs/df/ebrscrt.des on that
site. This file contains a barely structured list of filenames and
comments, and *that* is where that "Sep 2012" string on the "z/OS V1R13 and
Software Products Collection  PDF/BookMgr" comes from. Evidently no one
changed the comment, even though the file dates are 13 Sept 2013.

So the file for this Collection is /epubs/df/zosv1r13.des, and that,
despite the same .des filetype, contains a much more structured - though
not XML - list of .bks, .xks, .boo and .pdf files, and some other metadata.
You can see these in a browser, but unfortunately the directories
containing the files (/epubs/book, /epubs/pdf, and /epubs/bkshelf) are not
listable.

Now looking at the page
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27036733 that was
mentioned for COBOL, the PDF files are on the very same
publib.boulder.ibm.com server as the SL files.

So all it would take would be for someone at IBM pubs (if there's anyone
left), to edit the file zosv1r13.des and insert six PDF filenames for
COBOL. Or they could do it right and actually create a .xks bookshelf file
as well; even Softcopy Reader can do that.

As for whether there's any way to fake this by putting your own descriptor
files somewhere, well perhaps, if you have a local web server that can
serve the /epubs/df directory locally, and redirect all others to the IBM
site. Or perhaps you could use the proxy support in SL to redirect
selectively. But then you'd still need to know the filenames, and by the
time you've done that you might as well do it all (heh) manually.

that version of COBOL and that actually, we are still on   IBM Enterprise COBOL 
for z/OS and OS/390 3.1.0, with a moribund mainframe :( COBOL 5.1 is not even 
on my list of would be nice to do some day.

I just like the organization provided by the Softcopy Reader/Softcopy
Librarian combo. Shelves and so forth. Meaningful titles for the
mysteriously-named manual files. Ability to download all of the manuals for
a given product with a single click. Keeping track of what's newer than what
you already have. Etc. Yes, it supports PDF -- although less wonderfully
than it supports BookManager. (Of course -- it calls PDFs "Extended
Shelves." "Extended" as in "less functionality"!)

As far as updates to the z/OS library, zVSE and zVM have had new releases
more recently than z/OS. That may explain why there are no z/OS  updates.
Lizette is correct that z/OS 2.1 is PDF-only so say goodbye to Softcopy
Reader.

Sorry. I was not clear. (My excuse is I am sitting in an airport on weather
hold.) I don't mean the IBM proprietary book *format.* Yeah, I like the
search on those but that's a different topic. PDF is fine.

The program I use to read the docs is "IBM Softcopy Reader 3.8." I like the
way it organizes the books in shelves (including the PDFs).

The program I use to download docs is called (IBM) "SoftCopy Librarian 4."
It retrieves books from "the Internet" (?) or "IBM Publib Boulder." I like
that it works with the "Bookshelf" organization. THAT is the program in
which the IBM repositories show as a year back-dated. THAT is the problem I
am trying to solve.

Older versions like 4.2 and earlier have 2 types: BOO and PDF.

That is one mother of a COBOL link with links to 7 versions of Enterprise COBOL 
and other nice resources!

Ok, however there are no nice search facilities across bookshelves, but never
