If you mean the volser of the tape, no. DDR uses unlabeled tapes.

Or use the version of DDR that works with CMS Pipelines (NOT PIPEDDR) and have
the TAPn stage manage the labels. Works nicely.

Do I need to do a requirement for IBM to ship the version of DDR that supports
this as the default DDR? It'd be real nice if the CMS file support was also
added to the standard one...

We used to run a product called XDR in place of DDR. It used standard labels
and had a few other nice features like CMS file level restores. I'm not sure if
the company is still around but their web site is still up:

Re: VMTAPE Command

2010-05-04 Thread Mike Walter
Jim Hughes mentioned VTAPE, but if I recall correctly, that provides
emulation of tape which the data resides on real disk. If you are
considering a VTL solution from a hardware vendor, that is an alternative
to the VTAPE product.

A VTL (Virtual Tape Library) requires some means to mount a virtual tape
within the Virtual Tape Library.

I'd be somewhat surprised that a hardware provider has a requirement for a
very specific software vendor's tape library product (e.g. CA's VM:Tape,
IBM's Tape Manager for z/VM product, etc.).

Ask your hardware vendor for more specific information regarding the
VMTAPE command they are requesting. No IBM VM system has ever been
distributed with a VMTAPE command as part of CMS.

Re: FTP of Nomad database files from VM to VM

2010-05-04 Thread Mike Walter
I think John's right. Isn't a Nomad2 database RECFM=V?

If that's true, won't you lose the record length on each record when it is
FTP PUT? COPYFILE (PACK fixes that, preserving the record lengths, but
with its obvious overhead at each end, especially for large databases.

Just remember when FTPing COPYFILE packed record to first: BIN F 1024

Then when uploading at the target z/VM system, ensure that you upload the
file as FIXED 1024, and COPYFILE UNPACK.

You might be better off just using a PIPE to send the whole minidisk.
Search the IBMVM-L archives for good examples on how to do that.

Design screen under CMS

2010-05-04 Thread Sergio Lima

Hello List,

Here, We don't have some product to design a screen for work with REXX / CMS.

Before, work here, I used TSO / REXX / ISPF Panels, that is a native panels
under TSO.

Years ago, I remember that used DMS / CMS.

Someone know, if have something that I can use for design screens to run a REXX
under CMS ?

There are other products, too. XMENU/E from CA is good. Depending on the design
of the screen, you may be able to use either XEDIT or CMS Windows for creating
dialog and data entry screens. DMS and XMENU will cost; XEDIT and CMS Windows
are both included.

Re: How to work with hex in REXX

2010-05-04 Thread Wayne Bickerdike
REXX has hex constants so you could just set up the variable with the
correct HEX value.

 str = ’0001A735’X   /* PRK */

I often assign the quote value using this method, saves confusion when
embedding quotes into strings.

QUOTE = '7D'X /* EBCDIC single quote */

DSN = QUOTE || MYDSN || QUOTE.

Lots of nice explanations for the various functions too. But I also
like simple solutions.

There is also the Univ. of Victoria' Rexx Display Manager
(RDM). It supports not only Rexx but Assembler, PL/I, C,

It's available off of the Univ. Of Victoria's VM web site,

RHEL 5.2 Kick Start

2010-05-04 Thread Martin, Terry R. (CMS/CTR) (CTR)

Hi

I am having trouble Kick Starting my RHEL 5.2 z/Linux guest. For some
reason I cannot get the Kick Start INITRD or IMAGE to load from the my
Jump server.

I have been using the same INITRD and IMAGE for all of my RHEL 5.2 Kick
Starts without any issues up to now. The only difference this time was
that I created a new z/VM LPAR and I am building z/Linux guests for the
first time on this LPAR. To this end I copied the RHEL 5.2 INITRD and
IMAGE files from an existing LPAR (where it has worked fine) to the new
z/Linux guests on the new LPAR. I packed the files and used IND$FILE to
send them to my desk top and then used IND$FILE to receive them on the
new z/Linux guests. I them UNPACKED the files. Now when it reads the
PARMFILE to FTP the INITRD and IMAGE files from the Jump server they do
not load. I receive the following.

I don't know if the COPY messes something up or what? Any help would be
