Re: VM Workshop -- was fantastic!
The suggestion of a June date will work better for me as well. I just returned from EAA Airventure, the largest aviation event in the world. It's always the last week of July in Oshkosh, WI. As the only fixed date on my calendar, and with 50:1 odds, you can imagine my disappointment when I saw the date of the Workshop. :-/ Madison in June would be nice. -Chip- On 8/2/11 08:50 Tom Huegel said: University of Wisconsin would be a good choice for next year... Glad to hear it will be repeated. I wasn't able to come this year, but hope to attend the next (and the one after, and so on). - Daniel Bewley On Tue, Aug 2, 2011 at 9:31 AM, Kent E. I have another commitment for that weekend And thus it begins... ;-) For all the years I organized the Rexx Symposium, we would start out with a location, set a date that the greatest number of people could attend, canvass venues for availability prices, change the date to a less-optimal based on the canvass, lather, rinse, and repeat until we had the perfect compromise: everyone was equally unhappy. Invariably, the date of the Symposium was set by factors completely beyond our control. But it's nice to ask everyone what they would like, if only to show that you are trying to be accommodating. :-/ Until you've successfully pulled off an event such as the Workshop or the Symposium (both of which were notable for affordability) you have no idea how hard it is to make it happen. Even though I couldn't be there this year, I'm grateful to the organizers for the effort that went into reviving one of the more valuable conferences I attended back in the day. -Chip-

University of Wisconsin would be a good choice for next year... Strong VM ties (TCP/IP) there too. Madison is one of my favorite places in the US, but it tends to be hard to get to cheaply (cheap is a big factor for Workshop). Current discussion has University of Kentucky as top candidate, Ohio State again, or University of Nebraska, but I'd go to Madison in a heartbeat. Nothing fixed in stone yet - we gotta go out and check it out -but UK did some awesome Workshops in the past. Those folks know how to throw a party - the BBQ at the last one was legendary. In order not to derail this list, I'd strongly encourage anyone who's interested in VM Workshop to sign up for the VMWKSHOP mailing list (at vm.marist.edu). Better yet, volunteer! Gets you free shirt, first shot at the beer, fame... well, at least for lots of tech dudes. 8-)

You wound me, good sir. I'm entirely in favor of anything that's good for the ongoing health and happiness of z/VM. Cheers, huzzah, bravissimo, and congratulations to all those involved in a successful workshop! VM has a long-established tradition of being long on community while being short on cliquishness and I'm delighted to know that the event was a resounding success. That being said... Absolutely and by all means, do what sensibly needs to be done to maintain awareness and support the program. We're all here because we're interested in All Things z/VM-related. DO please use this forum as one of many possible ways to promote awareness of z/VM-related community events of any sort or scope. Where there are event-specific fora available, please use those alternatives as the place for event-specific discussions of a non-technical nature. *sigh* Perhaps next year... I'll also point out that Monsieur Martin hosted another of the better workshops Back In The Day. The Bates Mountain Inn in Fayetteville has a niche all its own in the Workshop sagas As does getting mooned by the locals while riding on a steam train to Rudy, BFE, Arkansas. You had to be there. *sigh* Perhaps next year... I miss the old workshops. -dan.

Re: VM Workshop -- was fantastic!
Let me echo Dave's remarks. As you may perhaps recall, I asked a while back if an old geezer who retired over twenty years ago could attend. The answer was yes, so I went. I knew that the technical sessions would be over my head because much of the stuff didn't even exist when I was working. But in my working days I had attended many workshops and SHARE sessions, so I knew that much of the valuable stuff happened between session, at meals, in evening bull sessions, etc. So I went primarily to socialize. I had an absolutely wonderful, if exhausting, time there. I was excited to see people I had known in the past but also to meet younger people whom I did not know including folks from Endicott, where we live. You better believe I plan to go to the next one. I just hope my health holds up The original concept of the workshops was to provide a forum for people whose employers would not send them to SHARE. The idea was to try to keep the cost down so folks could afford to pay their own way. By attending SHARE and workshops I was able to meet and become friends with a whole lot of people. And I communicated with these people between meetings. It would be even easier to keep in touch now with the internet, which wasn't available then. If you have not had the opportunity to attend user group meetings before, you would be wise to do so whenever you have the opportunity. The knowledge and friendships I gained made my career.
