[IceHorses] File - Editing, Responding to the List

2007-12-02 Thread IceHorses

Just a reminder for those who may need it:

Please follow the list rules about editing / trimming (deleting) unnecessary
quoted text and all message headers, footers, Yahoo ads, list footer, etc.
from your replies to list messages.

Email list netiquette calls for only quoting 2-3 lines of relevant text as
reference for a response (and that quoted text should be less than your
response). It is standard netiquette.

Look at how other list members post.

Place your response *below* the small quoted text from the message to which
you are responding. Quoted text should be within brackets like this
(pointing IN to the quote).

Top posting is not allowed.

If editing / trimming is a problem, please use a new, clean email to post to
the list. Be sure your email program is set to Plain Text format (or
basic) and not HTML (or fancy text with colors and backgrounds).

Posts to the list that contain large amounts of unnecessary quoted text make
it very difficult for digest readers to find the replies, to search our
archives, and for people who pay for local phone service by the minute. If
those members have to wade through all the quotes to find your response, it
may not be read or taken seriously. Digest members, especially, need to
delete the whole digest from their replies.

Other lists may not have these requirements (which are a basic part of email
list netiquette), but we like to have our lists on the more professional
side.

Our archives are a very valuable source of information and we'd like to be
able to keep them without being charged alot for them. I'm reasonably sure
that those who quote excessively may not want to contribute to the expense
it may cost us.

So please snip (edit, trim) anything that's not needed and quite a few
people (including the moderators :-)) will be very grateful.

And thanks much for your participation on list!

the woods and I was down there alone to boot, but still not too
bad. When I came home from work, I wanted to clean up the paddock
while therewas still dayllight and give them more hay. Even with 4
piles Falki wanted them all. Not a big deal, just annoying. I so
want them to be happy and getting along. Probably, they're more stir
crazy from the small area, then anything else.

Anna:

You are doing the right thing by adding at least one pile more than there
are horses. Adding space is also important. The more space the better.
Horses tend to be happier if there is space to run in because then they can
choose to be either all together or apart. They will choose to be together
99 percent of the time. And as anyone knows doing something by choice will
make both humans and horses happier. So if the horses are now confined in a
small area - see if you can give them more space. Also put the hay piles as
far apart as you can - so far that chasing the others away from theirs
becomes too much bother.

i think at first they do overkill Anna, Tivar did, he was very polite
at first, and then brutally mean, it would really upset me cause he
was so mean to nasi, he would stand and not move, frozen for fear of
tivar jumping him. Then tivar settled down and now he acts like
jaspar, fights when they come after him but minds his own business
otherwise. and when i separate him and nas for some reason nasi calls
to him so i know he likes being pastured with him. and now he lets
nasi play and act like a youngster without jumping on him all the
time. It took about 4-6 months for all that to settle down.

[IceHorses] sucky mud

2007-12-02 Thread Janice McDonald
here we have some really bad deep sucky mud on the trail, especially
with drought and going down to drink at ponds and streams that have
dried some and left a very muddly bank. People say riding a young
horse hard in deep sucky mud is a good way to give them bowed tendons!
On the trail I saw an older TWH work himself out of belly deep mud,
one step at a time, I thought to myself, man, what a fantastic horse.
he never lost his head and just one step, one lunge at a time, got out
and I thought we would have to get him out with national geographic
helicopters and a crane :) (this was a few years ago) But makes me
wonder if it is primitive trail sense... because yesterday going down
to a river Tivar demonstrated a primitive trail sense i think. None
of the others would go down to drink from the river, a river that goes
underground for miles and comes out, fed by springs and it is sorta
narrow and deep right now. But when he felt the mud sinking beneath
him he did not panic and try and lunge out, he walked quickly DEEPER,
like he knew a stream or river gets more solid when you are actually
IN it, then he stood belly deep and drank, then when we went to leave
I got myself ready for him to lunge out quickly but he did the coolest
thing where he sorta hopped out with his front feet then unstuck one
back foot, hopped, unstuck the other back foot, in a methodical calm,
totally relaxed way. Like he knew the way to work himself out of deep
mud. He was also savvy when we came up on a wooden observation deck
overlooking a deep deep skinkhole. It was at the state park. The
overlook was small, about the size of a stairway landing, and you
could easily see over the railing that it was hundreds of feet
straight down. that we were SUSPENDED which you would think would
terrify a horse. none of the others would go anywhere near it, but he
walked out on it and looked all around like cool, then when we started
backing out someone hollered be careful its slippery, and it had some
sort of algae growing on it that made it very very slippery so I let
him back out and he would reach with one foot and test it then let it
land, then apply weight slowwwly then when it started to slip adjust
himself and I just let him work his way out. He finally did a half
turn and hopped over the slipperiest part. its interesting to learn
as time goes by what a horse knows and what he doesnt, what terrifies
him and what doesnt, what terrible issues he has and what he is ok
with. one thing he did also, we had to walk thru a very narrow gate
between two tall posts between a low two foot limestone wall. He
chose to step over the wall which made him have to hop out with his
back feet. interesting.

 There isn't much
 there EXCEPT for tendons.

Here's an article on The Horse, titled Lower Limb
Research, which includes information about shoes and
torque:

http://www.thehorse.com/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=4105

With heavy shoes, the whiplash effect is exaggerated.
As a result, the pastern tends to be more horizontal
during late swing, and the horse has more exaggerated
heel-first ground contact.

my gosh its not just the color, she has teevs pretty head shape and
his sturdy build I think. I asked teev and he said its ok if you name
her after him btw. i wonder what gait she is prone too with those
long back legs and short front but heavy chest? Tivar is prone to
trot with the long back legs and short front but he has a long LONG
body, hers is much shorter. I think Liz described it as he had a back
end perfect for a rw but a front end so shortlegged there would be no
way he could get out of the way of his own back legs. He can be
foxtrotty but his default relaxed gait is a beautiful smooth and easy
trot. do you have any ideas about her conformation and gait Karen? i
swear yesterday Tivar racked again. The horse in front of us took off
at a fast canter and he trotted faster and faster and then cantered
and then dropped out of it into is high headed gait that feels like he
is cross country skiing :) then he stumbled and scared the c*** outa
both of us and slowed to a walk and didnt even care at all when she
went out of sight,. The lady riding behind me on a tall long legged
thoroughbred said thank you! I was getting scared it was so fast!
and i was thinking to myself, wow, tivar has scared an off track
thoroughbred with his lightning furious blistering speed haha but he
stumbled going into a sharp curve so it was hardly the place for
speed.

Hello Janice,
I will talk to Svanny about this. It is a good idea. Of coure, if we
can do this, I bet that will be the day Blessi invents a new creative
way to evade. One of his favorite ways is to pretend he has to pee
several times during the boring part of the lesson. He assumes the
position but nothing else happens. (And yes, I was concerned about
this and had the vet check him out, blood work done, check for bean,
etc., so it is not a physical problem.) He will happily stand there
for 5 minutes, walk on, and then assume the position again. This never
happens on the trail or during more advanced work--only at the walk.
If you give only give him 2 minutes and then ask him to walk on, the
behaviour extinguishes itself after one lesson due to lack of
reinforcement. It is something he tries only during one lesson every
couple of months to fool us.

my friend ruth is always talking about primitive trail sense and I
think that is what you are describing! One sign is smelling the trail
when unsure or to make a decision. they can smell how deep mud is! i
am convinced of that from jaspar's decisions thru the years.Tivar
means mountain spirit but when i googled it i got some info about
Tolkien basing his Lord of the RIngs middle earth beings on The
Tivar which also tranlates to glorious beings, plural, something in
their mythology, beautiful spirits that live in the center of the
earth. Having said that I feel quite certain several icelandic people
will swarm out of lurkdom to tell me it means bucking a-hole haha.
i love that thing judy posted about leslie desmond saying how it never
fails that a horse on the trail arriving at the peak of a hill will
stop and gaze out across his surroundings like he is sinking it all
in. thats the way Tivar was at the sinkhole overlook. i know its
very stupid to base generalizations on the actions of two horses, but
teev and nasi are my only horses that seem quite oblivious of extreme
heights. nasi acts like he would happily jump over the guardrail of a
bridge i take him too all the time whereas Jaspar acts leery of
looking over the railing as we cross. my friend ruth also says trail
rides are as much for the horse's pleasure as it is for us. we rode
with a group of people one time which included a woman who was the
worst whiner i have ever seen. if we went above a dogwalk she would
yell for us to slow down that her horse, was 'beating her to death
but if we went at a dog walk she would whine that her horse was
jigging and beating her to death. i would want to scream get a new
horse and be so aggravated, but one day she yelled slow DOWN my
horse is beating me to death and Ruth yelled back over her shoulder
nope. this ride's as much for my horse as it is for me. and we
just kept on. I have not ridden with that woman since and now ruth
has moved away. i sure miss her.

Judy,
I have 5 Icelandics, two are foals. I got Gloa a couple of years ago,
almost exactly 10 years after the last of my old Icelandics died. Gloa
is my primary riding horse. Then I got a really nice but unregistered
pinto mare from Dawn Shaw named Netta. Last Spring I got a mare named
Grima who was pregnant by Lanny Carroll's Kolskeggur. Gloa and Grima
had two nice fillies named Kyppa and Lafa. All of these horses except
Netta are chestnuts with flaxen manes and tails. I have a palomino QH
gelding named Chigger who went of to work at a children's riding camp
this past summer. He was paid in hay bales in lieu of money, which
turned out to be a very good thing due to our drought and hay
shortage. Come to think of it, we could change Chigger's name to
Chiggur. Then he would fit in better with the Icelandics. I will
send photos separately.

 janice--

Janice, no idea but she is very big boned without being draft as far as
anyone here thinks. The mule farm really wasn't sure either.

I rode her today and it was an experience. She has only been here since
thursday night and she was very timid. I didn't have a bridle or bit that
fit her (I do have a girth...yay!), so I used a halter and lead rope and my
fiance first led me around the round pen. That went fine and so I made a
rein out of the lead rope and he walked beside us down the drive, which is
about 1/4 mile long so I thought it would be a nice short try. Well, she
was very nervous and wanted to go back with Rod's Appy. She was so uptight
that I told Rod to take the lead and stay close to her side while we walked.
At the end of the drive I said, lets turn back because I could feel her
tensing and Rod's Appy was going ape sh-t running around chaseing us... Rod
siad don't worry honey, I've got her...LOL! famous last words I thought
because he has no idea how string mules are! As soon as we turned she
lurched and pulled the lead apart and started galloping back to the barn, me
on her no reins, hands free...15.3 hands up in the air. She then ran into
the round pen and proceeded to try to crash through the fence to get to the
appy. I stayed on and when she started to push through the fence I jumped
off, kind of shaken because while I have good balance, I'm a kind of a timid
rider. I didn't freak or anything but I don't like that kind of thrill! LOL!
I'm a bit disappointed but we are going to work on it and see how it goes. I
think she is so in love with the appy because as soon as they met they
bonded and since she is still unsure of her surroundings, she's nervous. On
the ground she is very very calm. So maybe it will pass...or maybe not
(sigh...) we'll see!

2007-12-02 Thread Cherie Mascis
Cherie...do you know anything about opossums? I raised a male years ago
and
had non issues, but this young female is becoming aggressive and I am
wondering if she might be reaching sexual maturity?

Any thoughts?

Mary, LVT

Mary,

I've raised five opossums. Three males and two females. The males are
definitely slower and mellower.

The female I had in WA. for school programs was more hyper and harder to
hold but never aggressive. We had a female at Turtle Bay in CA that was
there when I took over and was three years old was very easily handled as
long as you woke her up slowly. Another female we raised later was a bit
more sensitive about being handled because she had been run over by a car,
had her jaw wired together and needed daily medicine for a several weeks. If
one of our volunteers picked her up when she was still half asleep or if
they didn't support her feet she'd grab with her feet and sometimes her
mouth to get support! A little disconcerting, so we clicker trained her to
climb into a basket that we'd place in her enclosure when we wanted her to
be in one of our school programs. It worked well. We'd pet her until she
woke up, present the basket and when she climbed in, she got clicked and
received her favorite reward-banana!

As far as the sexual maturity part goes..they have such short lifespans in
the wild, I think they can breed at 6-8 months, but they are spontaneous
ovulators, so don't ovulate until they meet a man! So I wouldn't think
she'd get cranky for that reason. How old is she? My friend Karen, who has
rehabbed many opossums, said that if you get them too far past the time
where they've just come out of the pouch they can be pretty aggressive.

2007-12-02 Thread Judy Ryder
One way to tell if a horse is light and soft is to
ask him to turn, without using the reins.

Can you turn your horse without the reins?

Sometimes dressage people think their horses are
light, but the horse is only responding to the reins
and not the rider's body.

The contact leaves the horse's neck compressed which,
in turn, makes them heavy on the fore.

It's all relative, and the riders don't even know
that their horses are heavy because everyone around
them looks the same way!

Re: [IceHorses] white hairs on back

2007-12-02 Thread Nancy Sturm
When you see a horse who has white hairs from tack or harness, it isn't
particularly subtle.

Dusty, a grade driving pony, came to us with white hair (lots of it) where a
crupper would have rested and also where the saddle part of the harness
would sit.

Twist, the OT Standardbred has white hairs on his legs where the track
hobbles probably rested.

And a friend's endurance horse has nasty white patches on either side of his
spine, just behind the withers. I know we all make mistakes and I surely
have made my share, but I really would feel awful if I were using tack
that fitted so poorly that my horse ended up with permanent white patches -
proof forever of my error.

I've seen white dots on TB cannons where they have been pinfired.

Holly has a big white mark on one of her shoulders from an old bite mark.
Thunder has white marks under where his saddle was - but they didn't appear
until late in his life, when he hadn't been regularly ridden for several
years. Also, his face now has a lot of white, as does most of his body, so
I can't swear the white under the saddle area is from a bad saddle - he's
28.

[IceHorses] Side saddle

Sometimes at the therapeutic riding program where she used to ride, they
would put kids on a horse so that they were seated with both legs on one
side. Do you suppose a side saddle would be safe for a disabled rider?

[IceHorses] Re:Shims and Inserts

2007-12-02 Thread Kaaren Jordan
Maybe I missed part of this thread, but just thought I would weigh in on
this subject as I have been a Skito dealer for over 10 years designing
custom pads for both treed treeless saddles.

What this UK site calls a full length shim is actually what Skito calls a
laminated insert. This type of padding is best used for treeless saddles
like the Barefoot /Bob Marshall/ Trekker/Hilason or Torsion which DO NOT
have panels to create more lift off the horse's spine for heavier riders
/create more of a twist feel for the rider in saddles that have little or no
twist. Is is not a good idea to use the laminated inserts on any saddle
treed or treeless with panels because of the pressure line that would be
created both at the spine edge mid-panel where the top layer of laminated
foam ends create lateral instability.

There are a number of both standard custom shims that can be ordered by
all Skito dealers according to need after seeing pix/detailed phone
consults.

In treed saddles one needs to be very careful how why shims are used as an
ill-fitting tree can not be remedied by adding shims or a therapeautic
pad. Very often this only temporarily shifts pressure points, but does not
help the real issue. In treeless one also needs to be mindful as to why
shims are being used if that particular treeless is in fact the best match
for your situation. Just adding more padding even in treeless does not
always make things better, in fact it can make things worse by causing
pressure lines at the spine/creating a lateral instability.

In treeless saddles, the padding systems can be thought of as an integral
part of the saddle. It creates the spine channel width depth for the
horses comfort. Choosing the most appropriate padding system for your
situation can be challenging, but not impossible. A good saddle fit
consultant that is familiar with both treed/treeless technology can help
avoid a lot of trial error costly mistakes.

The pix on the UK site do reflect the trend that in recent years most
companies have re-engineered the pad designs with a more horse friendly
anatomical topline contour so pad pull down mane rubs are a thing of the
past. In fact Skito now has over 150 different pad patterns to match each
individual model in all the different brands of all the brands of treeless
on the market.. Sensation alone has 6 or 8 different Skito patterns for
all the different Sensation modelsvery interesting indeed.
