Re: [IceHorses] Natural Tolter
Hi Raven, Thank you for the welcome. Yes it is sad, My mare had a "hitch" in her gait before I bought her. The breeder and vet said she was fine. I just thought she needed conditioning as some horses can prefer one side over the other. She would occasionally take a short stride with her left hind. She had been in pasture and never trained at all. One year later after six months in training she began to get worse. So the vet dx's her with spavin (2k worth of tests) It was an expensive lesson. Yes Peruvians are smooth. I love my mare she is very sweet. I just remember every time I road an Icelandic I always had a big smile on my face. Not the same with my Peruvian. Please tell me about your horse. Maria

Hi Lorraine, >>>I Hope I spelled that right. I took Dagur to Carla'a and learned a little about team training. I could see the difference already. Where do I get one of those wands? In the US you can get the wands (dressage whip but very stiff so they don't sting and very well balanced) at the New Mexico office www.ttouch.com - Linda's newest book the Ultimate Horse Training and Behavior book is one of the best investments you could make - it is over 300 pages - the book is 8 1/2 x 11" and lots of color photos. It is written in sections so you can look up a problem - it will give a variety of exercises to do and you find the exercises in a different section. It means that the solutions are shorter and easier to read and you can just go to the places that are relevant for you. I am really glad you have made a connection with Carla. [IceHorses] Natural Tolter
Hi, I am new to the group. I own a Peruvian Paso mare with spavin. She is only 4 and is in the middle of training. I believe she had it when I got her but was too inexperienced to realize that is what it was. She even passed a vet check. My riding her will probably be limited. I will be getting another horse soon. I have always liked the Icelandics and actually found the ones I have ridden to be smoother and more fun than the Peruvians. I have only been riding a year. So I don't make a mistake on this next horse, I am wondering how I can tell a "natural tolter" from one that has had to be trained to tolt? I am looking for a horse that has a lot of "thread" as it is called in Peruvian Horse speak. It means that the horse has a wide range of speed within his gait and can perform it well at slow, fast and inbetween speeds. Maria

Someone told me once that there are atmospheric changes that occur with wind and that person felt the horses were reacting to those changes in pressure. I have always thought it was more instinctive, a reaction to all the "stuff" blowing around. Oddly, of all the horses I've had, the reactive TWH Hunter is very little affected by wind. Nancy >

Merry Christmas to all! I'm seeking information from all of you experienced folks as to why horses are so frisky, nervous or just wildly explosive when it is windy? Even my nice sweet (normally calm) Icelandics are like trying to hold onto a kite on a windy day. Bernadette

to my friends on the list: BELIEVE I believe- That we don't have to change friends if we understand that friends change. I believe- That no matter how good a friend is, they're going to hurt you every once in a while and you must forgive them for that. I believe- That true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance. Same goes for true love. I believe- That you can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life. I believe- That it's taking me a long time to become the person I want to be. I believe- That you should always leave others with loving words. It may be the last time you see them. I believe- That you can keep going long after you can't. I believe- That we are responsible for what we do, no matter how we feel. I believe- That either you control your attitude or it controls you. I believe- That regardless of how hot and steamy a relationship is at first, the passion fades and there had better be something else to take its place. I believe- That heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences. I believe- That money is a lousy way of keeping score. I believe- That my best friend and I can do anything or nothing and have the best time. I believe- That sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you're down, will be the ones to help you get back up. I believe- That sometimes when I'm angry I have the right to be angry, but that doesn't give me the right to be cruel. I believe- That just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have. I believe- That maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you've had and what you've learned from them and less to do with how many birthdays you've celebrated. I believe- That it isn't always enough to be forgiven by others. Sometimes you have to learn to forgive yourself. I believe- That no matter how bad your heart is broken the world doesn't stop for your grief. I believe- That our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become. I believe- That just because two people argue, it doesn't mean they don't love each other. And just because they don't argue, it doesn't mean they do. I believe- That you shouldn't be so eager to find out a secret. It could change your life forever. I believe- That two people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally different. I believe- That your life can be changed in a matter of hours by people who don't even know you. I believe- That even when you think you have no more to give, when a friend cries out to you, you will find the strength to help. I believe- That credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being. I believe- That the people you care about most in life are taken from you too soon. -- yipie tie yie yo

Clyde the Newfie died in a fire and was burnt pretty badly and the morgue needed someone to identify the body. So they sent for his two best friends, Danny and Joey. Danny went in and the mortician pulled back the sheet. Danny said, "Yees by, he's burnt pretty bad. Roll him over." So the mortician rolled him over and Danny looked down and said, "Nope, it ain't Clyde." The mortician thought that was rather strange. Then he brought Joey in to identify the body and Joey took a look at him and said, "Yees by, he's burnt real bad. Roll him over." The mortician rolled him over and Joey looked down and said: "No, it ain't Clyde." The mortician asked, "How can you tell?" Joey said: "Well,Clyde had two a**holes." "What? He had two a**holes?" said the mortician. Yees by, everyone in town knew he had two assholes. Every time the three of us went to town, folks would say: "Here comes Clyde with them two a**holes." Have a great day. Take care, be safe and be good to yourself

[IceHorses] Waaayyyyy OT- Jokes!
It was already late fall and the Indians on a remote reservation in South Dakota asked their new chief if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild. Since he was a chief in a modern society he had never been taught the old secrets. When he looked at the sky he couldn't tell what the winter was going to be like. Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he told his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the village should collect firewood to be prepared. Being a practical leader, after several days he got an idea. He went to the phone booth, called the National Weather Service and asked, 'Is the coming winter going to be cold?' 'It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold,' the meteorologist at the weather service responded. So the chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more firewood in order to be prepared. A week later he called the National Weather Service again. 'Does it still look like it is going to be a very cold winter?' 'Yes,' the man at National Weather Service again replied, 'it's going to be a very cold winter.' The chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of firewood they could find. Two weeks later the chief called the National Weather Service again. 'Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?' 'Absolutely,' the man replied. 'It's looking more and more like it is going to be one of the coldest winters we've ever seen.' 'How can you be so sure?' the chief asked. The weatherman replied, 'The Indians are collecting firewood like crazy.' -- yipie tie yie yo

Annie was near the end of the line and she said her best Christmas present ever was the year of her 8th Christmas when she got her pony for Christmas (He was a pretty 14 hand gray 1/4 pony) She said that someone could give her a house for Christmas and it would never be as special as that pony. They all said "You reeeally got a pony f9or Christmas?" and they all agreed that no one could top that. -- Laree in NC Doppa & Mura Simon, Sadie and Sam (the "S" gang) "Yet when all the books have been read and reread, it boils down to the horse, his human companion, and what goes on between them." - William Farley

Re: [IceHorses] logging and pulling thanks
Jeanette: When I first had my Icelandics in West Virginia ('60's), "pony pulling" was all the rage. These contests would be held at county fairs and other places and it became a betting event. A sturdy pony that looked as if he could pull would bring a good bit of money. Several times I had phone calls or visitors wanting to know if my Icelandics would make good pullers. I didn't think that it sounded like a good life for an Icelandic and I felt there might be abuse involved, so I never did sell to those people. You sound as if you know the risks and know what to look out for. Good luck to you. Annie

>> I sent him out for some training. >> Lorraine > I might do that for my husband. > Janice Hi Janice, I have sent my husband out for training a number of times. I tried sending him with the dogs and , when that didn't work, with horses. Nothing seems to have worked. In talking to the trainers about their lack of success, I learned that they found husbands, in general, very resistant to training. But - if you find an effective husband trainer, please let me know. My baby Assa is being shipped to me right now. I expect her to be here tomorrow or Saturday. She is my present, I am making my own dreams come true. As a girl I always wanted a pony for Christmas now I am 65 years old and getting a new pony for Christmas. Another baby, eight months buckskin filly, buttermilk color. It's funny the things we want vs other people our age. My house is full of seven week old puppies for the season too and I was given a new kitty after the fires. The surprise to me is that my Rottweiler female, mother of babies adopted the kitten and loves her. The canary is the only one unhappy.
