Aloha Kim,
What is her temperature when she gets like this? (Try a ride with a
rectal thermometer in your saddlebag. . .)
The first thing I would do is start giving her an ounce of sea salt
in her feed, and/or half sea salt and half oral rehydration mix
(electrolytes), especially if you have no salt available or even if
you only have those salt blocks out. Those were designed for rough
cattle tongues, and horses often can't get enough salt from them
before their tongues get sore. I would have loose sea salt available
for her , too. (sea salt for the trace minerals)This is really
important for our guys because of their coats, especially those that
are being fed hay from fertilized commercial sources instead of
pasture. Those hays are often really high in potassium (fertilizer
= NPK) so their sodium balance can get out of whack quickly with a
potassium heavy hay source. They fluctuate wildly, too, so having it
checked with one bale doesn't mean the current one is ok.
>
That having been said, I had a similar thing occur with an older mare
that I was starting to get 'back into shape' after a foal. I trace
clipped her and it helped a little. Then I full body clipped her
and added the above salt and the problem went away. I hope that is
the case for you! She was sweating a bit but it was trapped in the
underlayer of her winter coat, I think.

Best of luck,
Sally

The thing I'm worried about is that Nanna WASN't
sweating. I'd have felt much better if she was. Well,
she was a little bit around her girth, but, not her
neck and chest like the other horse. For as hard as
she was panting, I'd have thought she'd be alot more
sweaty. I rubbed her body, too, to see if she was
sweating near the skin, but, I couldn't see it, but,
she was dry.

I bet that clipping her all over will go a long way to fixing the
problem - or will entirely fix it. Drifa was standing out in that
pasture the other day and sweating. I clipped her over the weekend (I
blanket her at night) and she is very happy now (except that she is
embarassed about the lousy job that I did). I am Northern CA.

Yes, I'm in So. Cal. I don't know the exact
temperature, but, it was around 70 or a little more.
There was a bit of a breeze, I rode in a t-shirt and
was perfectly comfortable (not hot or cold). I got a
little warm and out of breath when I was walking up
the mountain. Nanna is clipped under her neck, chest
and the bottom half of her torso. She's been shedding
alot, so her winter coat isn't as thick as it was. I
think I will clip all the hair off and see if that
helps at all.

[IceHorses] Worried about Nanna

2008-03-04 Thread kim shumaker
I'm worried about Nanna. I went for a ride, with a
friend and her Icy today, up a mountain near my house.
Because the last time we took that route, Nanna was
panting at the top, I hand-walked her a good part of
the way. When we got to the top, she was panting
hard, but, not sweating much at all. She was a little
sweaty around the girth area. My friends' horse who is
17, fatter than Nanna, and ridden less frequently, was
breathing hard for a minute or two and then returned
to pretty normal breathing. Her horse's neck, chest
and nose were sweaty. Nanna panted for around 15
minutes and I hand-walked her down the mountain. I
called the vet when I got home because I'm worried
about anhydrosis (inability to sweat). He thought
her breathing seemed abnormal given the amount of
exercise I described. There are other possibilities
that could be causing this.

Anybody have any ideas? I guess we will start out
with several tests to try to rule things out.

Thanks, Kim

I thought someone on this list might enjoy Tom ites' Ridecamp post. Nancy

I just got back from the AERC Convention and the GAHR Reunion where after
32 years we again had the opportunity to meet others from as far away as
Australia, Germany, Canada and parts of the USA.

It was a Loving remembrance of a summer we all agreed was an experience of a
lifetime. We decided that since we had so much fun we're gonna do it again
the next 29th of February. That date sorta fits us.

But since there is this conversation of the Icelandics, allow me to convey
that there were 2 teams that finished in front of me riding Icelandic
Ponies. Count Johannes Hoyos of Austria in 13th place and Walter Feldman of
Germany in 21st place. These were some real good ponies whose leasing was
arranged by Linda Tellington-Jones.

Over dinner at the La Strada Italian Restraunt w/ Walter and Curt Lewis,
Walter told us he is going to Atlanta for a 3 week Icelandic Seminar he was
brought over for and arranged arround the reunion. Walter has on his farm
in Germany 300 Icelandics and has been enamored by them since 76 even those
his farm imported some Standardbreds, but the ponies are his forte.

These ponies are tough, strong and willing and there are stories i could
tell of how they jumped picnik tables for demonstrations during the GAHR.

Let me also say that Martha Post (who we have not found and if anyone knows
of her please contact us) rode POA's (Pony of America) who was also in front
of me in 26th place that should not be forgotten in this conversation. ts

Wonderful! We will all send positive vibes so that happens! I'm excited for

And I had just thought about part-breds before reading your message.
I think it's fine to have crosses included.

Charm has no experience with water crossing except trying to cross the
river with her once and the front feet were okay, but when her back
fit hit the water and splashed her, she had to leave real quick, so
that's something for us to work on. Tosca is WAY ahead of us!

[IceHorses] Natural Horse and the History

2008-03-04 Thread Judy Ryder
Even though the Icelandic Horse is a breed of 1,000 years, it is a relative
newcomer to the horse breed world outside of Iceland, probably about 50
years.

In Iceland, before this period of time, the horse was pretty natural, ridden
without much in the way of mechanical aids.

In this handful of decades, there have been a lot of unnatural things put
upon the Icelandic Horse.

We have the great opportunity now to bring the naturalness back to the
Icelandic Horse.

Let's all take a positive part in representing the breed in it's most
natural riding and training style.

[IceHorses] Virtual Natural Horse Show

2008-03-04 Thread Judy Ryder
How about a goal of June 14, 2008 for our virtual Natural Icelandic Horse
show?

Since we are all so geographically far apart, and at different levels with
different horses, this should give us all a chance to "enter" the show with
a little video of whatever point we're at with our natural horses.

I think we can all chose some type of category to enter into, whether or not
it's a category that has ever been used to show in before!

For example, someone might want to enter a "Mounting" class. I might do
that with Charm, if I'm able to mount her by then. That might be all that
we can do at that point in time.

Or a lead-line class. Perhaps Denise's children can ride their stallion
bareback once around the pen.

Or a trail riding class with video from the ride; or a senior horse class,
or therapy horse, or walk / trot (walk / gait) class; as well as riding in
halter, or three-trick class, etc.

Everyone can do something!

This is a perfect opportunity for us to show and promote our natural horses!

Are you in?

fragile' - so don't put them in such a high risk situation. Racing
and eventing would never be considered humane enough to be allowed to
occur if it were starting now. Too much money, power and history to
put a stop to it now. Kind of like insurance companies. We let them
become way too rich and powerful to think that we could ever to go a
health system without it.

oh they fit all dogs I think! They dont fall out so easy if they are
too big. The deal is they come empty inside and you put in this
plastic smooth putty stuff, bite into it and then it hardens and fits
your teeth exactly. So you could get some for sophie and I could get
some for ruby, but i think ruby might could just wear mine. of course
she would want me to wash them before putting them in her mouth...
but nasi, I think i would have to just put them on his very front and
close his lips around the sides. I could probably dip them in
molasses and he would accept them...

yes please post anywhere you can Nancy, I just feel she is gonna be
sent from one tough guy home to another. After she came back from the
place where the man gave her rope burns she was in a stall and she
came charging at the door when i walked by and at first I thought she
was attacking me but then I saw her eyes were begging and full of pain
and confusion! She lowered herhead for me to rub her as if desperate.
I honestly am thinking of taking her and having her put down rather

Thank you all for your concern, Ed is resting and will start rehabilitation
today, extensive. He still has his cognitive abilities just fine. His left
side is worse than I thought. When they got him up in front of me yesterday I
lost it. Yes, it was very brave of him to crawl to the phone and call 911 and

tell them he was having a stroke. He said he sat and thought about it once he
got into his chair. He felt that he was not having a heart attack but a
stroke, since he had no pain and his heart was beating fine. So he dialed 911
and
said I am having a stroke. He said he was afraid he would loose
consciousness if he didn't call then I would find him dead on the floor. Wow I
am so glad
he did.
Thank all of you again for your support and caring thoughts. Sylvia

Janice,

Is it okay if I post this to the gaited endurance list? She sounds too big
for endurance, but there may be a home for her out there. As for flipping
over, don't you think the shank bit had more to do with it than feeding
time? Poor thing.

[IceHorses] free TWH rehab mare

2008-03-04 Thread Janice McDonald
Free TWH mare, registerable SSHBEA, TWHBEA, RHBAA, is HUGE, a sweet
gentle mare, was broke to ride and doing great, then for some
inexplicable reason reared and flipped, seriously hurting the rider.
She is about 5 i think. All anyone can think of is it was feeding
time and other horses were being fed and she wanted to go eat. She
was in a severe shanked bit at the time and probably a too narrow
saddle. She is just huge. probably around 17hh and 1300 pounds.

Then she was sent to a an who "laid her down" with rope burns and "sat
on her head to make her submit" and gosh I just cant stand it. She is
mine if I want her, I dont have room. Anyone want her? I will haul
her free to meet you within a hundred mile radius of donaldsonville
GA. She is awesome old foundation TWH lines, BTO, Handshaker, she is
a grandaughter of Spirit of Evil Knieval. If you go to the Walkers
West website you can see him in the TWHBEA Hall of Fame i believe they
call it, anyway. She is beautiful sorrel and white and honestly i
dont believe she has a mean bone in her body, just a sweet gentle
spirit. I wish someone would take her!! I would if I had room!
Please

Anyone know anything about "Happy Hoof" by Seminole feed?? We just
learned that as posse members a local Seminole will give us each a
free bag of feed a month. So with both of us being members thats two
bags. I was thinking of getting Happy Hoof which is supposed to be
low starch low sugar for horses and ponies and mini's "prone to
obesity and founder". Anyone have any opinions about this? I was
thinking of feeding it to my icelandics and donkey only.

well I guess I thought wrong :) I always thought it was a walk that
has a strong to and fro to it, i guess i thought stonewall did it

such a distinct rocking motion you can feel each step in your lower

Yes, it's her - I remember her name is the same as my redheaded mare, Runa.

She was also defended strongly as a wonderful, caring horsewoman by an article
on the Eidfaxi website. Why? Because they found a picture of her rubbing her
horse ("lovingly" they said) and because there was a picture of her waving at a
competitor. I don't know about you, but waving at a competitor doesn't make up
for much in my mind.

It makes me thing of that old saying about not being able to see the forest for
all the trees...that, and also about the story about the Emperor's New Clothes.
There seem to be a lot of Naked Emperor Trees in that Competitive Forest.

RE: [IceHorses] Vote for J. Michael Plumb - WHY??

2008-03-04 Thread Karen Thomas
Please vote for J. Michael Plumb for the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame.
http://tinyurl.com/yvxyqc Please cross post.

Why? I'm curious as to why you say this, and why you care? Have you ever
met him, or trained with him? If not, why do you cross-post things like
this?

Michael Plumb, 8-time Olympian, is headquartered maybe an hour and a quarter
east of our farm. I've heard some rather disturbing things about some the
horses that went through his barn and didn't make it as eventers. I've only
personally met one, however. Her story wasn't very nice, although she was
finally living well, quietly on a small farm, with a sensitive rider, when I
met her. Her owners got her just before the killer arrived to pick her up to
take her to slaughter. I don't know for sure how typical her story was,
although I've heard there were many others. I don't know about the others
firsthand.

I'm of the opinion that if we don't know the details about someone, maybe we
should just stay neutral, and not promote him/her. I especially feel this
way if someone is going to promote himself or herself as a caring horseman.
I never said anything specifically to the list about meeting that horse
before, but seeing this request hit me wrong. I haven't met Michael Plumb
personally. I feel sure he'll make this Hall of Fame, simply because of his
record-setting 8 Olympic appearances. It does not, however, make me forget
that mare. Even if she were the only one, which I doubt, that was one mare
too many by my standards.

Eventing is a difficult, demanding, even rough, and controversial sport at
the international/Olympic level, and there has been serious talk at several
times of taking it out of the Olympics. I specifically remember this talk
surfacing one year - if I remember correctly two, maybe three horses, died
at ONE event. On the other hand, I've known some low-middle level eventers
who are good riders and caring horsemen - as with most equestrian sports,
the scandals and abuses seem to get worse, the higher the level of
competition. It doesn't HAVE to be such a rough sport, but often it is.

Stories like this one are what have made me grow pretty anti-competitive
when it comes to contests involving horses.
