Re: [fsug-tvm] Suggestion requested for a good distro
Dear Sasikumar sir, Arch or any arch base distro is highly command line friendly. Here is something about pacman, the package manager https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pacman Myself was a long time user of Arch linux and later switched to Chakra Gnu/Linux http://www.chakra-linux.org which came as a distrolet of Arch + KDE and eventually transformed into a stand alone distribution. Also, a recommended reading is the beginner's guidehttps://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners%27_Guide. Even though, you have installed the system, it is better to know how you build a vanilla Arch system from scratch and on the way, you would be familiar with every nuances of Arch, making you a wizard in command line on the go. Especially, a power user like you who knew quite a bit of CLI, its better to study more and more. The arch wiki and it's forums are a place where you could find virtually any answer about desktop and server computing. And I suppose, this is one of the few distros that allow so much Desktop Environmentshttps://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Desktop_Environmentand Window Managers https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Window_Manager to select from. and the sweetness of arch is its user repository. If by any chance, you do not find something in the official repos, you could search in AUR and install the program from there. Yayourt is a good wrapper having AUR support. (Of course, Chakra has chakra community repo or CCR, the same way.) Another tool, I liked very much here is yakuake, a terminal emulater. Something i picked from chakra is focuswriter, a text editor which can produce odt, txt and rtf, but is best suited for using in seminar's where you do not have a presentation, handy. -- -- Freedom is the only law. [fsug-tvm] Chakra project starts supporting Malayalam
I suppose, many of you have heard about Chakra Gnu/Linux, a distro based on Arch + KDE. It is still in Alpha. Here is the website: http://www.chakra-project.org/ and the wiki: http://www.chakra-project.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page The newest release, Aida 2010.04 for X86_64 architecture is available with zyxware. i686 may be made available upon request. The news is that, ttf-malayalam-fonts package maintained by SMC has found place in their official platform repository. This is especially sweet because, even Arch linux have not kept malayalam fonts in its official repo, but is still in AUR (Arch User Repository). There is a slight difference in packaging scheme of Arch and Chakra. Based on Ashik's AUR package, I had created a CCR (Chakra Community Repo) package and submitted it yesterday. Seeing the strategic importance of supporting Malayalam, a happening language in the FLOSS world, they acted fast and moved it to official repo even without waiting for any user votes. This decision was made after a brief IRC discussion between the developers. Now the call is ours too. Chakra is a fast evolving KDE based distro and very user friendly. Installing it in newer machines are quite easy. It maintains a half rolling release cycle and is bleeding edge. Installation and boot time seems to be much faster than many known distros. Do try it with new hardware you purchase and you would get a perfect stable modular KDE desktop. Only the bare minimum programs to get a running KDE distro is provided in live media. Another speciality of this distro is that they keep their official packages, gtk free. Even libre office is provided removing all its gtk dependencies. But this can't be possible with every gnome utilities. Therefore, those gtk based programs, we might need, like firefox, gimp, etc are provided as bundles and won't be installed in the core system. Clicking on a bundle will run it instantaneously. Perfomance wise, there won't be any delay in running them or any glitch in utility value. (Bundle system was unique for Mac systems until chakra adopted it.) If there are more takers to this new distro, we could even think of starting localisation efforts. As KDE Malayalam is strong, only few distro specific packages would need to be localised, like the tribe installer. -- Freedom is the only law. But dependencies are automatically handled by most of the modern package managers. The driver issues are not an inherent problem of Gnu/Linux. The evil business practice of Microsoft is to be blamed for this lapse. OEMs hessitate to provide drivers for free OS. They get indirectly taxed, if they do. On 29 August 2010 08:52, alan alan alan.alan...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, When I talked with my Windows addict friend about GNU/Linux, he said that, the main disadvantage of it is, it needs internet to install software. Who said this nonsense? In case of Gnu/Linux, you could get a bootable iso image from internet too where as, if you do the same with windows, its going to be called PIRACY. You need a windows install disk to install windows anyway, don't you? Either you or the guy at the computer shop should possess it. Likewise, Gnu/Linux distros too need an install disk. You could buy it from someone, share it from someone, or get it delivered by post from distributors itself through their request CD service. For most of the popular distros, s/w you need for your daily computing comes bundled with install media. So there is absolutely no need of using internet to install s/w. But if you need any s/w that is left-out from distro's choice of packages, you could well use the internet to download it and install. Isn't that a bonus? (Well, you could also get the binary files from someone else, if you don't have an internet connection, the same way, you get some CD's from a friend of you.) On the other hand, windows comes without any additional s/w. You need to buy Microsoft Office suit or download Open Office from internet. You need EULA licenced version of this s/w and that s/w or else use open source alternatives that can be downloaded from intertnet. Gnu/linux users use internet to update their packages to the latest available version. But this isn't a necessity. A working system is always a working system until it is broken. If you have installed a specific version of any Gnu/Linux distro, and it is working fine for you, there is absolutely no need to update the packages unless something goes haywire. What is the difference here? In windows environment, only security updates are freely available like this. Unless you install them, you are at risk. -- Freedom is the only law. Re: [fsug-tvm] Re: KDE or GNOME?
A perception: Canonical concentrates on gnome based platform by its design decisions. Though they have a KDE flavour known as kubuntu, its just an offering for the sake of it and is often criticized as bloated. The (parent) distro by and far is tuned to gnome principles. Also, to my understanding, Linux mint, another debian derivative too is predominantly gnome based. It is not that, you can't install KDE on top of these distros. But the fact that, these are not well knitted for the K desktop environment stands ground. It is because of such constant criticism that, kubuntu developers announced project timelord (http://www.kubuntu.org/news/timelord) which would be beneficial in the long run. We would assume that by kubuntu 11.10, the full potential of KDE would be made use of by the team instead of the half baked offerings, now in town. Why I say half baked? They were reluctant to offer plasmoids first. They broke kNetworkManager next. They usually miss the development circle of KDE. And lots more. For a good KDE experience, you should try a KDE centric distro. Here are the distributions shipping KDE (which obviously includes kubuntu): http://www.kde.org/download/distributions.php Read this comparison too: http://www.techradar.com/news/software/operating-systems/8-of-the-best-kde-distributions-657523 My suggestions: 1. OpenSuse for a n00b. It has on the fly installation like ubuntu. I have tested this, but was not robust or flexible as I intended it to be. One of the most favorite KDE distro in Europe. Instead of the blue interface of KDE, OpenSuse's version wears a Green gown. 2. Chakra Gnu/Linux (still in Alpha, but highly optimised, running KDEmod, a tweaked modular version of KDE, bleeding edge. Will rock the world soon.) 3. Pardus 4. Mandriva 5. Arch Linux with {KDE, KDE-meta, KDEmod} Highly customisable. As robust as you intend. No graphic installer. Should love Konsole too to use this. 6. FreeBSD (Not Linux. But highly robust. No malayalam support yet) 7. Slackware (vanilla KDE, with no modifications, no port based system as in Arch, so more Konsole based) Bottom line: None of this is .deb based. -- Freedom is the only law. Its just a plasma away! Click on the Cashew icon in top right corner of the screen. Click on Unlock Widgets, if it is locked. Now, another cashew icon will be present in the lower right corner of the task bar. Click on it to find a popup. Click on Add Widgets in that popup that you see atop the taskbar. All default widgets will be displayed. Use scroll button to find Lock/logout button. Double click on it to activate the plasmoid. You could drag it to whatever position in the taskbar. But if he intend to install Arch Linux, a separate /boot partition is must. Just 32 MB will suffice. But it should be one of the primary partitions. /var is where all your log files go. Normally servers only need separate /var. But its not a problem even if you have it. I have separate partitions for /, /boot, /home, /var, /usr, /tmp, and of course /swap The swap space is traditionally recommended to be two to two and a half times the RAM. But for most usual applications, when you have 1 GB RAM, 1 GB swap should be good Now with so much of RAM, 2x rule is obsolete. But if you want to enable hibernation (suspend to disk), your Swap partition should be able to hold whatever you were holding in the random access memory. The best thing with a rolling release is, you can easily roll back to your previous system state, if you don't need the changes you have made. This is not about configuration though. Reconfiguration should be done manually. I am just telling about downgrading. -- Freedom is the only law. [fsug-tvm] Re: KDE migration woes
@Binny Linux Mint is optimized for gnome. You better try KDE with distributions that default with KDE. I am using KDEmod 4.3.2 and I do not have any problem as you suggested. Everything works fine. @Saral for net configuring, use wicd network manager. Its easy and its native for KDE. to use Malayalam, its very simple. Start Menu System settings General Regional Language (in Personal) Country/Region Language here default might be US English. Add Malayalam too as second option. take Keyboard Layout in Layout enable Keyboard Layouts (its a radio button) Indicator options Show country Flag in Available layouts, select India, select mapping in for inscript and variant mal with label ml for Malayalam Now take Switching options. I do not remember the default option. Any way, click on the Global shortcuts radio button, and in Alternative shortcuts, you could well change the switching shortcut to Ctrl+Space. That would be lot easier. Leave Main shortcuts and 3rd level shortcuts and None. Apply the changes and exit. [fsug-tvm] Not able to type in Malayalam
Hi, After the last upgrade of my system, my Malayalam Keyboard is not functioning. No problem with Malayalam display though. OS: Arch linux, Desktop environment: KDEmod 4.3.2 (Ashik had packaged Malayalam for Arch linux. Probably, he could answer, I suppose) I checked System settings Regional and Language Keyboard layout. Here is the error message displayed: Cannot load library /usr/lib/kde4/kcm_keyboard_layout.so: (libxklavier.so.12: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory) Possible reasons: An error occured during your last KDE upgrade leaving an orphaned control module You have old third party modules lying around Check these points carefully and try to remove the module mentioned in the error message. If this fails, consider contacting your distributor or packager. Now the problem is that, as my /var partition was filled, I had cleared the pacman cache yesterday and so downgrade is not possible. Also, Udev is taking more time to load during boot. - Sebin -- Understanding is a three-edged sword: your side, their side, and the truth --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Freedom is the only law. The design you follow most suites a professional blog than a corporate website. Viewing the page, I doubt, whether it is search engine optimized. Content starts only after a whole bunch of links. It is not warrented from a web design school. A little tweaking in CSS will alter the position without comprimising the 3 column layout. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Freedom is the only law. I myself have a Canon EOS 350D and I appreciate their technology. But if you are in Kerala, its better to use Nikon products for two reasons. First one is climatic. In the high humidity of Kerala, the lenses are more likely to be infected with fungus. Nikon lenses inhibits more resistance to fungi. Second is availability of premium service. More service personals are accustomed with Nikon than Canon in Kerala. [fsug-tvm] Re: Offline installation of KDE in arch
I have daily updates of quite a large pool with kdemod, a tweaked modular version of kde. That wont be possible anyhow without a broadband connection. If you have access to a broadband connection, Arch is the best distro, you can have. After the base installation, you can chose whatever DE, you are comfortable with and the latest packages would be there for you. Also, you could try the live CD from Chakra projecthttp://www.chakra-project.org/. It is nothing, but Arch + modular KDE using a live CD installer called tribe, graphical system config utility called arxin, and graphical package manager front end for pacman called shaman. Note that Chakra is only at its alpha stage and x86_64 installation failed for me. So I went the usual Arch way of building from base. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Freedom is the only law. [fsug-tvm] deleting an unused sandwich partition without trouble
Hi, I have a peculiar partition problem that should be dealt with. My partitions are as follows: Primary partitions /dev/sda1 Windows TYPE=ntfs /dev/sda2 Linux boot partition TYPE=ext2 /dev/sda3 Windows TYPE=ntfs Extended partition /dev/sda4 Logical partitions /dev/sda5 ntfs /dev/sda6 linux swap /dev/sda7 lvm2pv over dm_crypt The encrypted partition /dev/sda7 is aliased as physical volume /dev/mapper/vgroup . The volume groups is partitioned as follows. /dev/mapper/vgroup: TYPE=lvm2pv /dev/mapper/vgroup-root: TYPE=ext3 /dev/mapper/vgroup-swap: TYPE=swap /dev/mapper/vgroup-usr: TYPE=jfs /dev/mapper/vgroup-var: TYPE=reiserfs /dev/mapper/vgroup-opt: TYPE=xfs /dev/mapper/vgroup-tmp: TYPE=xfs /dev/mapper/vgroup-home: TYPE=ext4 when mounting the partitions, swap is mounted from the lvm, /dev/mapper/vgroup-swap. I accidentally had kept a separate swap partition outside the logical volume which is of no use now. It comes around 1.7 GB, ie, 15% more than my RAM. I wanted to merge it with /dev/sda5, the ntfs logical partition inside the extended partition. But normally, if i do so, the encrypted partition /dev/sda7 will be automatically renamed as /dev/sda6. As /dev/sda7 is currently a linux logical volume, this may create a problem with booting my distro: Arch linux that I had build from base (using kdemod4 as DE). So is there a way out to successfully delete /dev/sda6 and merge it with /dev/sda5 without causing trouble to my GNU system? If I specify partitions with its UUID is fstab, can I succeed in doing so? Otherwise, it would take 2-3 days downloading installing and tweaking the system for my use. regards, Sebin -- Understanding is a three-edged sword: your side, their side, and the truth --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Freedom is the only law. [fsug-tvm] Re: Web authoring tools
Binny, I have used the Dreamweaver when it was with macromedia. At that time, I only knew just another web authoring / web site building tool and that was Microsoft's Front page. Dreamweaver was far more superior even then and it got only better with Adobe buying macromedia. It was only recently that I tried out amayo and kompozer, both for the mere joy of trying out. As amayo comes from w3c, it is striclty the most standard compliant offline web site authoring tool. The interfaces are not that eye-pleasing. Unless you need to develop your own CMS, or you want to try it out offline, those WYSIWYG tools that comes with popular free/opensource CMS like joomla, drupal or wordpress is far more easy to use. And if you wanna develop own CMS, you need to know the scripting. But if you are a freelancer who don't know this languages, its always better to use the aforesaid free CMS so that you could add any new modules you please with just a few clicks on them, you have umpteen number of free and paid templates to select from, and you have this tight integration with social media tools at your fingertip. [fsug-tvm] Installing Arch linux
I downloaded archlinux-2009.o2-ftp-x86_64.iso and created a bootable CD. But when trying to boot from it, I am redirected to caldera DR-DOS prompt and am standing at A:\ drive. I currently use a dual boot laptop with Windows XP-SP2 and Ubuntu 9.04. A few days before, I had switched the ext3 partition to ext4 without formating the system. Thinking this might be some problem with the change in filesystem, I tried it with my home PC in which Windows XP SP2 and Linux Mint 7 Gloria are the OS's. (Installed version was Mint 6 Felicia and I had upgraded the OS, a few days before.) Here also, the CD boots into DR-DOS. I searched for a solution and didn't find any handy reference. May be, something related to Grub may solve the problem. But still, I do not know what to do. FLOSS manuals are providing descriptive advice to use circumvention tools to avoid internet censorship. Get it from http://en.flossmanuals.net/CircumventionTools . You can make it a PDF. You can also use Vidalia (Tor). 2. This is not limited to China. In India, blogspot was blocked for three days, as someone posted something in support of the agitation in NE states. It is the authoritarian culture that is trying to block innovations and technology from developing. Theocratic states usually do the same. 3. Blocking FB or twitter is not a big deal. One cannot prevent any protest by doing so. When Tianmen Squre incident happened, there were no FB, no twitter, not even internet. Technology is only a convinience. Peaple can live and breath even without any technology. But if we have such tools, things are a bit easy. 4. Though Google made a china specific search engine, still Baidu.com is China's favorite SE. When Google launched their chinese SE, they offered licenced music download for free as a bait. This inturn reasoned that, the copyright regime's stand against music sharing is baseless. 5. Now a negative and weird argument: Google is soon turning another monopolistic mega corporate. Google's spiders are believed to read and interpret your gmail communications as if now. That is what helps them to display contextual advts along with our inbox. With this advt service, they are effectively looting much wealth from allmost all nations. When the much awaited google wave will be operational, though they are open sourcing it and intends to make it a standard for collaborative communication, they would be in a postion to read private postings in third party social media applications too. So someone could have begun a check on Google's growth. China effectively blocked Google Inc. Though the reason raised in public for the ban on Google SE is that they displays links to pornographic websites, the real reason *may be* China's secret stand that, Google should not be given chance to exploit China's wealth. 6. If peaple of China thinks what they are having is not a fair deal, this is a chance for them to create more challenging circumvention tools to effectively bypass any internet censorship. Restriction on filming helped Iran to make the most political films, we would ever see. The same way, Chinese may come up with quality circumvention tools. This may also help the cause of sharing. [fsug-tvm] Re: Google Chrome OS
this might in turn be of much help to Gnu/Linux users. As Google itself is into it, now, the OEM's will be pressurised to release decent free drivers for their hardware. Most of the OEM's only make default drivers for Microsoft probably because, Microsoft insist so. That is gonna change anyway. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Freedom is the only law. [fsug-tvm] Re: Google Chrome OS
Santhosh, yea, I have noted that point. But this OS will come as default installations in netbooks by mid 2010, right? Normally, it wont be a dual boot system. We may have some jobs that we cannot do through web like printing, scanning, CD/DVD writing etc for which we need third party hardware. So, Chrome OS should be able to connect with them. Without decent drivers, this may not be possible. Then the search engine giant will pressurise OEM's to release free drivers too. Sebin --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Freedom is the only law. [fsug-tvm] [OT] Free software for schools
-- Forwarded message -- From: Aishwarya Madineni Date: Fri, Jun 26, 2009 at 3:19 PM Subject: Free software for schools The open-source SchoolTool project, conceived in Cape Town by the visionary South African Mark Shuttleworth in 2000, is now available in version 1.0 under the Ubuntu Linux distribution. http://www.theghanaianjournal.com/2009/06/24/free-software-for-schools/ *Free software for schools * The open-source SchoolTool project, conceived in Cape Town by the visionary South African Mark Shuttleworth in 2000, is now available in version 1.0 under the Ubuntu Linux distribution. Ubuntu is developed and promoted by Shuttleworth’s software company Canonical Ltd, while SchoolTool now has its own dedicated US-based development team. Shuttleworth has long been an advocate of greater access to open-source educational materials in schools, both in South Africa and abroad. In 2008 he was the mastermind behind the Cape Town Open Education Declaration, an initiative that aims to make free learning material more readily available online. To date the declaration has signatures from 1832 individuals and 190 organisations from every continent. The May 2009 announcement of the release of version 1.0 of the SchoolTool suite followed the successful testing of 1.0 beta in October 2008. **Relevant to any school** The web-based SchoolTool 1.0 is an administration application for primary and secondary schools. It incorporates a number of modules developed to ease the running of a school, while striving to attain a global standard. It is designed to be relevant to any school, whether in a developed or developing nation. SchoolTool offers management tools including student demographics, report generation, course marks, attendance, and parent or other contact management. The difference between it and learning management systems such as Moodle is that SchoolTool is specifically designed to track student information such as grades and attendance, whereas others manage curricula and learning materials. The built-in calendar server can maintain calendars and timetables for each student and teacher, as well as each class, team or other group within the school. In addition, it co-ordinates the reservation and use of shared resources such as meeting rooms and equipment. Since the calendar is web-based anyone can use it, although individual records are private and group schedules are accessible only to the group. **Worldwide use** The SchoolTool project manager is former English teacher Tom Hoffman from Providence, Rhode Island. The worldwide adoption of SchoolTool, said Hoffman, must be driven locally as the development team does not have the resources to do so itself. To make this possible Hoffman plans to enlist the resourcefulness and co-operation of the international open-source community to promote SchoolTool in their own regions. Localisation is made easier with Canonical’s open-source project host Launchpad.net, which offers a translation service called Rosetta that allows any user to translate SchoolTool into their own spoken language. Translations from the community are encouraged. SchoolTool is already fully or partially available in a number of languages, with Afrikaans one of those in the pipeline. One of the great advantages of SchoolTool is that it can be installed in varying scenarios. It is equally applicable to schools that have easy access to computers and communications technology, and to rural schools that don’t possess even a single computer. According to the SchoolTool development team, the greater number of schools around the world fit the latter scenario. In these cases the server is hosted offsite. The school calendar and course information would be captured before the start of the school year, and much of the student-related record-keeping would be done on paper for later data capturing, preferably on a daily basis. **Customisable** SchoolTool is completely customisable for individual schools, states or provinces and can be used on any scale. Schools can use SchoolTool as their primary student information system or as a complement to other systems. An individual teacher can install the programme on their desktop or laptop computer and use it to manage their classes. There are three major components to the suite — SchoolTool calendar and SchoolBell, diary and resource management tools; CanDo, a skills tracking programme for teachers; and the student information system. SchoolTool is designed to be run as one server process for one school. However, more than one school can be managed on the same physical server simply by running more server processes. **Years in development** The SchoolTool project got off to a good start in 2000 when the Shuttleworth Foundation recruited a team of experts to develop the concept on the Java software platform. Shuttleworth terminated it in 2002 because he didn’t think it was going in the right direction, but a year later
[fsug-tvm] Re: attention Anoop John - Zyxwayre
You use Ubuntu right? I am not a geek. But my understanding goes here: RPM is RedHat Package Manager and YUM (Yellowdog Updater Modified) is a command line package-management utility for RPM based systems. Ubuntu is a Debian based OS and it uses DEB. Yum's equivalent in Deb based systems is apt. Sebin --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Freedom is the only law.
