[Ilugc] A big thank you from FSFTN

2012-02-09 Thread Prasanth Radhakrishnan
Monday, February 6, 2012 saw history being made as a mammoth crowd came to
see and listen to Richard Stallman talk on 'Free Software, Freedom and
Education.' The event, organised by Free Software Foundation, Tamil Nadu,
part of Free Software Movement of India saw over 3000 people at the SAC
auditorium at IIT-Madras

After the event, students at IIT-M tried to remember the last time they had
seen such crowds at their institution. When A.P.J Abdul Kalam had come to
the SAC auditorium, the hall had just about been filled. On February 6, we
at FSFTN and outsiders watched in amazement as the hall was not only
overflowing but at least one big group who had come to listen to Richard
Stallman was forced to wait outside as there were not enough seats.

Students, teachers, activists and software professionals – all of them came
to listen to the RMS . And the massive cheer that greeted him when he got
on the state was a sign of things to come as the crowd enthusiastically
listened for three hours as he held forth on a variety of topics. The
greatest applause of course came when he spoke up about Facebook condemning
it as a surveillance engine. The night before the event, during an
interaction with the media in the presence of FSFTN volunteers, RMS had
powerfully spoken about the problems of using terms such as Open Source and
FOSS while referring to Free Software. On Monday too, he explained the
history of the movement and the importance of terminology, say in the case
of using GNU/Linux instead of Linux. And of course there was the hyper-cool
St. IGNUcius avatar!

But the event was also as much about the crowds and the volunteers who
managed them. People flooded in from all around the city. Some journalists
were even comparing it to political rallies. And on top of every situation
was the dedicated team of volunteers from so many colleges over the city.
Some of them had even stayed over the previous night and helped finalise
arrangements. The best thing was this was the first time most volunteers
were working with FSFTN. Even so, the coordination between everyone was
perfect. And the magnitude of the task was immense, considering that
students from nearly 30 colleges were there as were at least 20 buses. And
personally for us at FSFTN, what was gratifying was also the considerable
interest shown by participants in the Community Computing Centre at
Mylapore, a project we see as being vital to the development of free
software in education.

So finally, kudos to the volunteers and participants of 'RMS in Chennai –
2012', definitely one of the biggest programmes the free software community
has seen so far.

Some reports of the event.

Of course you can use that plugin but according to GPL if you use it then
your work becomes a derived work of the GPL'ed code which means you have to
have your code under GPL. If you are going to add improvements then those
improvements should be in GPL.

In short: If you are ready to put your code under GPL then go ahead with
modifying the code else don't do that.

Thanks for taking your time to answer my question. Let me clarify a bit here.
The plugin that I am going to modify will be released under GPL license. There

[Ilugc] About GPL Licensing on a plugin

2012-02-09 Thread Alagunambi Welkin
Dear David,

So just releasing the plugin in GPL would solve it rite? The
application codes can remain our company property?

Releasing a project in GPL requires the source code to be available in
public without any restrictions for the four freedoms mentioned in the
following link.

http://www.gnu.org/licenses/quick-guide-gplv3.html

Not releasing the source code will result in violation of the GPL, and
it is called proprietary software. I hope, you will not like to restrict
the source code which you got from the public and will share your
modified code with the public. Please refer the wikipedia page on GPL
for more details.

If one releases binaries to a customer and if the customer asks for

How does your application talk to the plugin ? Is it over web service
(or) some other protocol (or) some other way ? If the communication
method is one of the standards (such as HTTP 1.1) then you should be
okay with releasing source only for the modified plugin. But if the
communication method is GPL licensed then, i am not sure, you need to
dig into the license to see if your application is considered derived as
per GPL.

Also, there is a lot difference between GPLv2 and GPLv3. What license
does the plugin come under ? GPLv2 is far more relaxed, even when it
comes to contributing back to the community.

So just releasing the plugin in GPL would solve it rite? The
application codes can remain our company property?

Seems to be so but no one can say for sure without the details.

Hi Guys,

I am looking for some open source contributor to work on
https://github.com/pocha/**hashag https://github.com/pocha/hashag . Its a
pretty basic rails app with some heavy oAuth though. The version so far is
done by me a friend Utkarsh. The readme has pretty detailed instructions
to get started.

A quick brief about the app - its called hashAG. Basically it is suppose
to parse a user's tweet with hashtag #ag publish it to his angellist
startup status. Angellist (angel.co) is a community developed by two
Indians in silicon valley to connect entrepreneurs with investors. Usually
lot of entrepreneurs (like me) use twitter as a channel to market their
startup. You would get detailed information on how why here -
http://groups.google.com/**group/ninjaclan/browse_thread/**
thread/549762aa22a89540http://groups.google.com/group/ninjaclan/browse_thread/thread/549762aa22a89540

I personally need this app so be assured that this would be something that
would go into production. I believe that there are lot of small but
industry relevant stuff can be developed I look to engage college
students for the same. I also look to create a segment on
stalkninja.comwhere people can source contributors for their open
source project. If
anybody is interested to work on this, let me know this could be the
first project there.

You would need to show your competency by at least able to install run
the current app on a heroku server. I can add you as contributor to the
github project we can then take it off from there. If you are able to do
the same, drop me a mail with your heroku url.

If you get stuck need help, feel free to ping. You would need basic
knowledge of rails, git heroku to be able to deploy then start tweaking
with the code.

Thanks
Ashish

Re: [Ilugc] A big thank you from FSFTN

2012-02-09 Thread A. Naseer Ahmed
In our program (RMS Meet in Tiruchengode) sung the tamil version of
Free Software Song in carnatic music. RMS is happy with that tamil
version of his own lyrics. also we sung the english version.

Totally 2400 participants are participated. we uploaded the detailed
report of the program very soon in our blog.

Congratulations to FSFTN,IIT lug Jaya fossclub and others for successful
conduct of RMS meet. The turn out was indeed great.

Most of you must be aware of the Free Software song usually sung in his
meet. RMS told that he would like it in carnatic music. Someone with talent
 can try.
