Re: [ilugd] why linux-delhi is pathetic
Dear LL despite all this, only six to seven showed up for this month's ilug-d meet, from our nearly 2,000 people in the mailing list. wretched support. don't blame the rains. Not blaming anything else, but I'll take the responsibility and I am sorry, and I was busy with some very personal work. Will definitely try to join next meet. i suppose this goes to show two things: linux-delhi is falling apart. linux is dead. Linux is not 2000 ilugdiites. I do not know about Linux-Delhi, linux / open source is defnitely not falling apart. That brings us to another idea, that if physical presence is not feasible sometimes, how about holding Webinars / Online Meetings in some chat room etc. Cheers -- Amit ___ ilugd mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd

[ilugd] Booting into a compiled kernel
Hi, I have installed RHL 9 on my machine. As I required a kernel without version support, I decided to compile a new one. I created a directory /home/all and copied the kernel sources into it from /usr/src/linux### and compiled the kernel in /home/all/linux###. Followed the steps given, make menuconfig, make dep, make modules_install exactly as gien in the README ... Well, everything went off smoothly, no make errors of any kind. Then I copied the kernel, to /boot/ with a new name mylinux. The problem is I can't boot into this kernel using grub. I added a new entry similar to the already present entry. Then I even used rdev to specify the root device, but still am unable. I tried all combinations, including : title Linux_something root (hd0,8) kernel /boot/mylinux It says Kernel Panic : cannot mount root fs or something like that. What could be the problem? Should I build the kernel in /usr/src/linux### directly. Any help would be appreciated. Regards, Venky PS : ### is the version number. ___ ilugd mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd

[ilugd] OS Sequence
Hi Everybody I just wanted to know how many of us have actually installed more than two operating systems on a PC. I mean other than our adored Linux and, well, the one who should not be named (Windows). Other day me and my friend were talking about the sequence in which you have to install multiple Operating System. After much deliberation we finally said that in order to have multi-boot system, the correct sequence IMHO is as follows:- 1. Windows 98 2. Windows NT 3. Windows 2000 4. Windows XP 5. Red hat Linux 9.0 (with GRUB being the bootloader) 4 windows aur 1 Linux! Bahut nainsaafi hai But with GRUB controlling the boot sequence of these four it seems all the more powerful. He He He. Anyway I would like to have the opinion of the members of the list. Has anyone installed these many operating systems on your or yours enemies system. In case yes, what problems did you face if any? And what are the pitfalls that should be avoided? Has anyone prepared any checklist for installing these Operating Systems. -Original Message- From: Robins Tharakan [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, July 21, 2003 3:34 PM To: The Linux-Delhi mailing list Subject: Re: [ilugd] Booting into a compiled kernel 2. you probably specified to build the root filesystem [generally its ext2) (or even ext3 if you are like me...) into modules. That doesnt work, since atleast the root filesystem needs to be inbuilt into the kernel(i.e. say y rather than m for the root filesystem that you use). basically the idea is that the modules are read from the root filesystem, so if you read even the root filesystem modules from the root, it becomes more of a chicken vs egg problem, thereby causing the error... Thanks, that was quick, I will try out the possibilities and ping back the list tomorrow, as its my home machine. Well, I don't think I specified ext3 as a module, but I will make sure, I did that. hi, Trust me I was still writing a paper till 12:45 at some SVP college near Punjabi bagh. i had that one too! ;) MCA paper repeat? IGNOU? yeah life's unkind sometimes... ;) although i believe if you wrote one word in that exam, you'd probably score more... And to reach CGO complex from there in 1 or even two hours with delhi's transport service was to be hoping for a miracle or something. I was evan carring the hard disk with the bsd ISO's and stuff. I had to go back home. i did an up and down from lodi road to rohini for two years, and 970/994 were quite a help allowing me to reach ~1 hr... so although slightly late, i think one could have made it... but then, i might be over-zealous then!! ;) ;) And CGO complex does not sound central when you are standing in Punjabi bagh. yeah, i'd agree, but then, if you consider adding the govt. location with projector, infrastructure and a good place comparing it to the gardens and previous locations with sweating environs... i'd say i'd still pick up a place like this... *hint hint* you stand to loose out a lot of people if you *fix* one location and decide for it to be central xuz there is nothing called central in a city which spans 32 KM in each freakin direction. i think its not a bad idea, but if you could find a good place like this in a location further up north, i think the list should feel fine to alternate maybe, i donno... its not impossible i guess...! PS: I give a standing ovation to robins the freakin minutes were up before 8 PM i am standing too! i crack bad ones now and then, but welll people live through them, (and so have i!;) either the meet was god damn quick or this guy has superman powers. ;) apun ko man hi rehne do yaar, bandi to milti nahin superman kyun bana rahe ho!?? ;) keep it up dude. Problem description: The Linux kernel handles the basic functions of the operating system. Several security issues have been discovered affecting the Linux kernel: CAN-2003-0461: /proc/tty/driver/serial reveals the exact character counts for serial links. This could be used by a local attacker to infer password lengths and inter-keystroke timings during password entry. CAN-2003-0462: Paul Starzetz discovered a file read race condition existing in the execve() system call, which could cause a local crash. CAN-2003-0464: A recent change in the RPC code set the reuse flag on newly-created sockets. Olaf Kirch noticed that his could allow normal users to bind to UDP ports used for services such as nfsd. CAN-2003-0476: The execve system call in Linux 2.4.x records the file descriptor of the executable process in the file table of the calling process, allowing local users to gain read access to restricted file descriptors. CAN-2003-0501: The /proc filesystem in Linux allows local users to obtain sensitive information by opening various entries in /proc/self before executing a setuid program. This causes the program to fail to change the ownership and permissions of already opened entries. CAN-2003-0550: The STP protocol is known to have no security, which could allow attackers to alter the bridge topology. STP is now turned off by default. CAN-2003-0551: STP input processing was lax in its length checking, which could lead to a denial of service. CAN-2003-0552: Jerry Kreuscher discovered that the Forwarding table could be spoofed by sending forged packets with bogus source addresses the same as the local host. All users are advised to upgrade to these errata packages, which contain backported security patches correcting these vulnerabilities. Important: If you use Red Hat Linux 7.1, you must have installed quota-3.06-9.71 from RHSA-2003-187, and if you use Red Hat Linux 7.2 or 7.3, you must have installed quota-3.06-9.7 from RHSA-2003-187. 4. Solution: Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata relevant to your system have been applied. To use Red Hat Network to upgrade the kernel, launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command: up2date This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate RPMs being upgraded on your system. Note that you need to select the kernel explicitly if you are using the default configuration of up2date. To install kernel packages manually, use rpm -ivh package and modify system settings to boot the kernel you have installed. To do this, edit /boot/grub/grub.conf and change the default entry to default=0 (or, if you have chosen to use LILO as your boot loader, edit /etc/lilo.conf and run lilo) Do not use rpm -Uvh as that will remove your running kernel binaries from your system. You may use rpm -e to remove old kernels after determining that the new kernel functions properly on your system. 5. RE: [ilugd] OS Sequence
Yes that surely works. What I was worried about was using Win2K and WinXP on the same box, but some RnD shows that they too can coexist. The order that you mentioned is correct. But you need to be sure of one thing, WinNT, win2K and win XP need to be on *different* partitions. This is because they all have a common set of system files and if put on the same paritition may wipe out the other. Go ahead try it out. -jasmeet -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Robins Tharakan Sent: Monday, July 21, 2003 7:09 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; The Linux-Delhi mailing list Subject: Re: [ilugd] OS Sequence i've done a three at a time, 98+2000+linux or 98+XP+linux in that sequence anyways, i believe the order is quite right, and should work. rbs On Mon, 2003-07-21 at 09:34, Vaibhav Sharma wrote: Hi Everybody I just wanted to know how many of us have actually installed more than two operating systems on a PC. I mean other than our adored Linux and, well, the one who should not be named (Windows). Other day me and my friend were talking about the sequence in which you have to install multiple Operating System. After much deliberation we finally said that in order to have multi-boot system, the correct sequence IMHO is as follows:- 1.Windows 98 2.Windows NT 3.Windows 2000 4.Windows XP 5.Red hat Linux 9.0 (with GRUB being the bootloader) 4 windows aur 1 Linux!
