Package: xconq
Vulnerability  : buffer overflows
Problem-Type   : local
Debian-specific: no
CVE Ids: CAN-2003-0607

Steve Kemp discovered a buffer overflow in xconq, in processing the
USER environment variable. In the process of fixing this bug, a
similar problem was discovered with the DISPLAY environment
variable. This vulnerability could be exploited by a local attacker
to gain gid 'games'.

For the current stable distribution (woody) this problem has been fixed
in version 7.4.1-2woody2.

For the unstable distribution (sid) this problem will be fixed soon.
Refer to Debian bug #202963.

We recommend that you update your xconq package.

KDE Security Advisory: Konqueror Referer Leaking Website Authentication Credentials
Original Release Date: 2003-07-29
URL: http://www.kde.org/info/security/advisory-20030729-1.txt

0. References
http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2003-0459

1. Systems affected:

All versions of Konqueror as distributed with KDE up to and including
KDE 3.1.2 as well as Konqueror/Embedded

2. Overview:

Konqueror may inadvertently send authentication credentials to
websites other than the intended website in clear text via the HTTP-referer
header when authentication credentials are passed as part of a URL in the form
of http://user:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/

The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has
assigned the name CAN-2003-0459 to this issue.

3. Impact:

Users of Konqueror may unknowingly distribute website authentication
credentials to third parties with links on the password protected website.
This may make it possible for those third parties to gain unauthorized access
to the password protected website.

   Users of Konqueror may unknowingly send website authentication
credentials in clear text across their local network and to websites of third
parties. This may allow an attacker who is able to eavesdrop on such
communication to obtain the credentials and use them to gain unauthorized
access to the password protected website.

4. Solution:

Users can reduce, but not totally eliminate, the risk by not providing
any password as part of a URL. Instead they should provide the password in
the KDE authentication dialog when prompted.

Users of KDE 2.2.2 are advised to upgrade to KDE 3.1.3. A patch for
KDE 2.2.2 is available as well for users that are unable to upgrade to
KDE 3.1.

Users of KDE 3.0.x are advised to upgrade to KDE 3.1.3. A patch for
KDE 3.0.5b is available as well for users that are unable to upgrade to
KDE 3.1.

Users of KDE 3.1.x are advised to upgrade to KDE 3.1.3.

Users of Konqueror/Embedded are advised to upgrade to a snapshot of
Konqueror/Embedded of July 5th, 2003 or later, available from

hi,

my Zyxel ISDN modem used to work perfectly in Redhat
Linux 7.2 but i have now upgraded it to PCQLinux 8.0
(redhat 8.0) since then this problem is coming. hope
someone can help me.

the problem is listed again below :

and Wvdial says

 -- Disconnecting at Sun May 11 14:54:21 2003

 phone
 (exit code = 16)
 -- man pppd explains pppd error codes in more
 detail.
 -- Try again and look into /var/log/messages and
 the
 wvdial and pppd man
 pages for more information.

 Zyxel had something peculiar with its ISDN setup ..
 You can check the AT
 commands for Zyxel in its manual

 It uses ATDIphone Number when using ISDN line to
 dial.  I used to issue
 these two commands :

 ATZ   --- for intializing modem

 ATDIphonenumber for dialing

 Hope this Helps

 hi,

 i found this question put up in mailing list

---
 Hi all,

 I am trying to configure Touchtel ISDN on PCQ Linux
 8.0 with ZyXel omni.net
 modem, but here are problems i am facing

 1. The setup works perfectly fine in Windows 98.

 2. In Linux, I am using wvdialconf to auto-detect
 the
 modem with following
 settings

 [Dialer Defaults]
 Modem = /dev/ttyS0
 Baud = 115200
 Init1 = ATF
 Init2 = ATO2B40
 Modem Name = ZyXEL omni.net PLUS DSS1: V 4.27
 Modem Type = ISDN Terminal Adapter
 Phone = 1501
 Username = *
 Password = *

 3. Whenever I try to connect, pppd dies and I get
 the
 following messages in
 /var/log/messages
 May 11 14:50:16 localhost pppd[13204]: pppd 2.4.1

 -- Auto Reconnect will be attempted in 5 seconds
 -- Initializing modem.

 4a. Some searching on google suggest that I use
 following Init strings
 instead of above(on geocrawler),
 Init1 = ATF
 Init2 = ATO2B40
 Tried using these inits instead of original, but
 error
 above(in point 3)
 persists. No changes in error.

 4b. Again searching on google suggested that I use
 following Init strings
 instead of above(on suse list),
 Init1 = ATFB40
 Init2 = ATXO
 Tried using these inits instead of original, but
 error
 above(in point 3)
 persists. No changes in error.

 5. Also tried commenting out Baud = 115200 . Same
 error as above

 6. Then tried inserting Stupid mode = On . This
 works on now-india ISDN.
 But with touchtel, no change.

 7. Again connected back to Windows 98, and found
 out
 actual strings passed
 in log file. Inserted the same in the wvdial.conf
 [Dialer Defaults]
 Modem = /dev/ttyS0
 ; Baud = 115200
 Init1 = ATFZE0X8
 Init2 = ATV1D2C1S0=0
 Init3 = ATL1S38.3=1

 Modem Name = ZyXEL omni.net PLUS DSS1: V 4.27
 Modem Type = ISDN Terminal Adapter
 Phone = 1501
 Username =
 Password =
 ; Stupid Mode = On

 Some success this time. I get connected at 57600
 bps ,
 but pppd dies again
 after few seconds. Here is the wvdial output

 [root at localhost etc]# wvdial

yeah, i have been doing some digging on this past few months as well. there's
something called jashaka, and i discovered a few more. they seemed to have
slipped outta my mind for the moment. why don't you do a search or browse
through the relevant categories at sourceforge.net and at freshmeat.net
(org?).

have also read some articles, that state the stuff is not really made for
'production loads' that is, when you get say 40gm or 200gb or even 10
terabytes of just raw footage, at full D1 resolution or something, with
mutli-channel sound and stuff, the software begins to creak.

but then things change dramatically in the FLOSS world.

delegates attending of the company?s Asia Pacific Strategic Planning
Conference in Queensland that was a set of forces that were
attempting to stymie adoption of the open source operating system.

They're mostly located in Redmond although they have recruited a few
allies, said Zollar.

He then indicated that SCO -- which is currently making intellectual
property claims over code contained in some versions of Linux and
maneuvering to extract license fees from commercial of the operating
system -- was part of the alliance.

[ilugd] few problems...

2003-07-30 Thread Anuj Tuteja
Dear sir

I have recently installed Linux as a second operating system.
Unfortunately, am facing the following problems while working with it.

1. My modem is not detected and so I cannot connect to the internet.
Am having internal modem “ Conexant SoftK56 Data,Fax,Speakerphone P “
Please also give me a detailed way of connecting the internet.

2. am unable to play mp3 files on xmms though I can successfully run .wav files
on the audio player
I got information about the following plugins from the magazine LINUX FOR U
XMMS Album List 0.6 / James Curbo
I downloaded it and then executed the exe file as per the instructions ….
But there was no effect
I still couldn’t run mp3 songs.

3. I don’t know the names of the basic applications under linux
Like I know that in windows browser is “internet explorer” or “netscape”…….i know that
to play songs I can use “winamp” or “media-player”……..
Can u help me by giving some basic information about these little general utilities

4. like in windows we have “ c: “ drive…”d:” drive I can open these
folders and then see what is there inside them
but how do I access in LINUX ?
am not aware about : which extension implies what type of file and application

5. is there some way by which I can access data on my other partition (where windows
is installed ) through the linux.

I shall be very greatful if u kindly help me in solving the above stated problems
Please reply at the earliest.

Thanking you
Anuj ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

Re: [ilugd] ISDN with Zyxel modem

2003-07-30 Thread supreet
My first suspect would be this hotplug thing. What is it upto. I have
used Zyxel omni.net plus modem or TA whatever you call it and it works
fine. I have used it about a year ago.

No ready solutions.

1) Take a look at omni.net manual. Especially look at channel bundling
in ppp. Few AT commands there

2) in /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial add a line

debug

You would start recieving more verbose messages in /var/log/messages or
/var/log/debug

Re: [ilugd] editing software

2003-07-30 Thread supreet
If your requirements are simple cut/paste and some effects. Avifile
suite is good enough for capturing and editing. I have tested it once or
twice, its quite nice and stable. Your milage may differ though.

It should be available at avifile.sf.net

2003-07-30 Thread Sunil. S.
Hi,
There's a software called MainActor which is available for both Linux
as well as Windows. The latest Linux edition of Main Actor 5.1V is yet to be
announced. I had downloaded its previous Linux demo version about 6 months
ago and it was amazing. Also few of the Premier Video Processing Labs and
some Television Chanel Company use its Linux version.

With Warm Regards,
