2004-02-15 Thread Sharninder
Hi,
I just wanted to know if anyone is using gaim (v 0.75)
to connect to the yahoo network these days. I am using

How are the other linuxers on the list connecting to

Hi all linux users guru's ,

First of all i want to thank u all for the wonderful suggestions and indications that
led to the solution of my problem.here i want to thanks Mr.. Ritesh for the guidelines
that he had given me .

Regarding linux there is another problem which i recently faced :
When ever i booted to linux i had to manually typed mount commands for mounting my
windows partition (c,d e) again to access the windows partition . Is there not any
file(s) that do this i.e. that auto mounts all the windows partition automatically

mounting the windows partition again and again.

Thanx in advance to all the linux users and guru's for giving me the solution of my

2004-02-15 Thread Mani
The file you are looking for is /etc/fstab
you need to add an entry to the winduhs partition (e.g /dev/hda2) and the
mount point (e.g /mnt/win) and the file system type (e.g vfat, ntfs). Keep
the mount options as defaults and the last two colums as 0 0

xine should be able to meet your requirements. though i've used mplayer,
i used it mainly to play asf, avi, wmv and 3gp files, i found it to be a
bit less responsive than xine. in xine, just pop in the cd and click
vcd.

While mplayer scores on performance, with the newer computers the
difference is becoming less and less noticeable. Use xine instead which
comes with stock redhat 9. It is good, and there is a KDE frontend

fixed in a few days, but it takes a bit more time to take out an

Also check out ayttm on sourceforge. It uses a totally different yahoo

ayttm frequently borrow reverse engineered protocol logic between

The source for the particular piece of text was not the organizers own

[ilugd] IBM to launch MS Office for Linux

2004-02-15 Thread Sandip Bhattacharya
[Isnt this the situation the openoffice community manager at linuxasia
was talking about at the semianar? - Sandip ]

http://www.infoworld.com/article/04/02/13/HNlinuxoffice_1.html

As part of its initiative to put Linux on the desktop, IBM Corp. wants
to migrate Microsoft Corp.'s Office suite to Linux. Microsoft said it's
not involved and suggests that IBM might do it by emulation.

[...]

Stefan Pettersson, technical manager for IBM's Lotus division in Sweden,
said that there will be a Java client of Lotus Notes some time during
the second half of 2004. This means that the first native Notes client
to run under Linux will soon be available.

However, the ubiquitous desktop software package is Microsoft Office,
even inside IBM. So there are no plans to abandon Office. To the contrary.

The Office package is very good. If there's anything from Microsoft
that shines, that's it. Frankly, we choose to port all our solutions to
Office, said Pettersson.

[ilugd] MyDoom dies today

2004-02-15 Thread Sandip Bhattacharya
[Whew! - Sandip]

http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/56/35516.html

MyDoom-A is programmed to stop spreading today, marking the end of
arguably the worst email-borne viral epidemic to date.

MessageLabs, the email filtering firm, blocked the virus 43,979,281
times in the two weeks since its first appearance in late January. At
the height of the epidemic, one in 12 emails the firm scanned were viral.

P.S. Regardless of the fact that this was a windows virus, never has a
virus troubled every email user on any platform so much.

I was more troubled by the countless messages sent by the anti virus
programs. When will Symantec/Mcafee and others realize that email
headers can be forged ? maybe this calls for an on line petition

[ilugd] Threads, top posting and [SNIP]'s

2004-02-15 Thread Sudev Barar
So maybe I am going to be flamed for this!!
ONE:
I am observing that most of the people on the list do not have idea on
how to start a new thread. They just hit reply button and over-write a
new topic in the subject line. Unfortunately this leads to the message
being recognised under the original thread and the causes total
confusion. Those who are not using threaded viewing on their mail
readers are missing a nice feature.
Without getting personal think of Mairu's mail [ilugd] gOTTA play
Video yesterday that appeared in middle of [ilugd] how many? thread.
And so on

TWO:
Top posting is as common irritant. This robs the reader of essence in
which the posting is being done and one has to read the context posting
below the message and re-read the top posting. I know there always is
debate about this but it is essential. See the mails of Raj / LL and how
easy it is to place the context by proper use of [SNIP]'s and bottom
posts.

THREE:
Many people just hit the reply button and add their 2 bit without even
snipping the original post. This results unnecessary bandwidth. In
extreme cases people have hit reply button to digest posting resulting
in the whole digest of ten~twenty messages being forwarded when one line
of one post was being commented upon.

Look at the guideline on ILUG-D http://kandalaya.org/guidelines.html

Thank you for your patience.

 Hi,
I just wanted to know if anyone is using gaim (v 0.75)
to connect to the yahoo network these days. I am using
the latest version and can't connect.
How are the other linuxers on the list connecting to
 yahoo these days.
