[ilugd] Reinstalling Ubuntu on dual booted machine

2006-03-01 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi

I need to install ( upgrade) from Ubuntu 5.04 to 5.10 (Breezy) on a
Thinkpad T 43 machine. Which is dual booted with Win XP.

Do I proceed with a normal install or is there any precautions I should
take, to ensure that WiN XP remains and I don't have to fiddle around
with it.

Thanks
ram

Just go and install. Ubuntu prompts for dual booting.

Open Source Software Services *is* a service/consultative practice and
thus would (ideally...) have a Service Tax component included

We have to setup the SMS alerts from emails, whenever some problem
occurs in NMS(Network Management System) it generates email and when
that email falls in a mailbox it should do a SMS to a list of mobile

I just want to know what are the service providers for same in around

As per available information with me, if you classify the services as
Information Technology Services then probably the services wont fall
under the Service Tax net. There is a service category called Business
Auxiliary Service (added in 2003) which excludes Information Technology
Services from the service tax net. Please refer to the Section 2 of the
following circular available on the service tax web site:

http://www.servicetax.gov.in/servicetax/circular/st_circ_62-2k3.htm

There are some news reports also which add to the confusion:

http://www.thehindu.com/2006/01/23/stories/2006012300241700.htm
http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/2005/10/15/stories/2005101502421100.htm

It would be great if any of the firms / companies charging or paying or
not paying service tax can shed more light on this.

why not just hook up an old mobile phone to the Monitoring system and
use that ?

doing alerts over the network ( like email / URL / webservice etc )
brings a massive disadvantage : that the system might be trying to
complain about the same network being out!

Well after thinking that the problem was solved and needing to run

 1. The offending folders (now up from one to 2) were sourced from a

When we load the disk and try and check its size in properties the

I tried to delete it from the USB Disk it said permission denied ,

I chmod 777 'ed the entre disk and was operating from sudo - and then
tried to delete it it simply refused.

It makes it difficult to try to debug a problem online, unless you
describe the source of the problem in complete enough detail. Also,
let us attack one thing at a time, i.e., lay aside the permissions
problem for now. As the problem seems to originate with the USB disk,
let us first try to tackle it there, and do one thing at a time. Mount
the USB disk (if there are any warning/error messages while mounting
it, please list these), and show me the following for the contents of
the USB disk:
1. The output of ls -ld dir, where dir is the directory in
question, i.e., some sub-directory of /media/usb, or wherever
   Ubuntu mounts a USB drive.
2. The output of ls -l dir for the same directory.
We will take it from there.

So If I run fsck , what precautions should I take - and how should I
 go about it.

Don't run fsck anywhere, for the moment. That might or might not be
a solution.

[ilugd] got tata indicom cdma card working with ubuntu linux on acer laptop

2006-03-01 Thread Linux Lingam
dear ilug-d troops,

did about 12 hours of googling and research, but the final steps were
real easy AFTER i did a painless, smooth, three-click install of
ubuntu on an acer celeron laptop.

the correct steps that work, are provided by our own nishant sharma,
at this site:
http://nishants.net/articles/sierra.htm

thanks nishant. you are the game, the game is you.
a tip 'o the hat to vivek khurana and prabind kumar singh, a.k.a prem.

the steps by nishant were for reliance. i just added the username,
pass, phone, for tata indicom, and it worked brilliantly the first
time.

ok, do you also wonder that tata is a strange name for a telephony service?
'hello, this is tata.'

and if tata ties up with ebay, what do you get?
'hello, tata, and buy-buy?'

overall, tata's service is quite relianc^d^d er... tata's service is
quite reliable.

i experience almost instant connection, but have to test it in the
indian outbacks, ar away from urban madness, on a dusty road
somewhere.

next steps:

1. wish to make and receive ordinary phone calls from this card. what
do i need? i don't even know if i need a headset that jams into the
sound and mic port of the laptop, or a special one that plugs into the
aircard. what software?

2. any way of sending and receiving sms?

fyi, the laptop only has debian and ubuntu. will install agnula, and
leave a spare partition or two for the random distro or LFY distro of
the month.

3. gotta go and install skype. by the way, just discovered somewhere
that the *.deb package of skype is flawed to run on deb or ubuntu. so
get the *.rpm package, run alien to make it into a deb, and install
that.

4. webconferencing. any tips on webcam hardware, and which software is
ideal for a webconference with ppl over multiple platforms? am okay
with slow frame-rates and postage-sized video. just wanna look into
the eyeballs of people i wanna interact with.

better to see the face than to hear the words.
- old zen saying.

:-)
niyam

ps: if anyone's got stickers of any linux LUG, FSF, or other langars,
please share with me. wanna splatter the laptop outer surfaces with
indian lugs, glugs, .orgs. will be easy to spot, and hopefully a bit
difficult, to misplace or steal such a laptop.

Hi Niyam,

On 3/1/06, Linux Lingam wrote:
thanks nishant. you are the game, the game is you.

You are welcome *blush*. In fact, I had a lot more plans, even to
create the similar watcher software for GNU/Linux but couldn't get
time and motivation.

 1. wish to make and receive ordinary phone calls from this card. what
do i need? i don't even know if i need a headset that jams into the
sound and mic port of the laptop, or a special one that plugs into the
 aircard. what software?

You can easily make an outgoing phone call. Put in your Samsung/Nokia
handsfree in the aircard and use minicom to issue this command:

AT+CDVnn (nn is the number you want to place call to)

To disconnect the call:
AT+CHV

You can recieve the incoming call, but no ring is heard. That's what
the Sierra Watcher software does in Windows. Command to recieve the
call is:
AT$QCCAV

 2. any way of sending and receiving sms?

Yup ;-). I am able to read the SMS using minicom only:

!CNTSMS should tell you the number of SMS in the inbox.

!GSMS=i,m (i=index no., m=message no.) displays the mth message in ith
index. I don't remember it exactly, but would send you the commands
reference for this card that I have somewhere on my laptop ;-)

 3. gotta go and install skype. by the way, just discovered somewhere
that the *.deb package of skype is flawed to run on deb or ubuntu. so
get the *.rpm package, run alien to make it into a deb, and install
 that.
Hmm... Don't know about that, but yes, I had to compile and install
skype_dsp_hijacker over skype as it has a bug to lock the sound card
being accessed by OSS and not ALSA on the debian. The incoming voice
speed is double too, may be because of cheap half-duplex sound cards
used on the laptops. Festival also had similar problem.

Also, did you face any trouble running pack_cis command on Ubuntu? As
I have seen people complaining that it throws some error because of
Ubuntu using new gcc and libc?

yes, i did face a bug. googled around and found the fix was to upgrade
to pcmcia-cs-3.2.7-3.2. i could not find a deb of this. so first
installed alien, then downloaded an rpm, alien converted it to deb,
then ran dpkg on it, and got it running.

interesting side-effect of doing this though.
the cardinfo utility, that little gui thingie, disappears, and am at a
loss to get it back.

also, i installed 'gnome phone manager' in the hope i'd get a
gui-based sms send and receive utility running from the taskbar. it
could not sense the card and just showed a disconnected sign.

You are welcome *blush*. In fact, I had a lot more plans, even to

Wonderful and I am going to try this on my Reliance + Samsung connects.

Nishi any idea what Nokia init string should be for Reliance. I am
able to connect wonderfully with Samsung / LG using Ubuntu but with
Nokia (using DKU-5 cable) simple ATZ only shows Dialing #777 on
phone and then drops with No Carrier dtecet. Have played with S9 and
S10 settings with no avail.

 plz help

does lspci show this device?
#cdrecord -scanbus would show if any RW device is found
If it does then try burning with some other software like k3b.
NautiliusGoBurn also uses cdrecord command line so it may be worth
your whil to man cdrecord
