[ilugd] Open Source Business Proposal

2007-01-31 Thread Amit Karpe
Hi all ,

Do you have skills to offer in the domain of IT such as programming,
designing, testing, project management etc. ?

Would you like to be your own boss without taking risks associated
with starting business ?

Are you disturbed that big companies are getting bigger and bigger at
the expense of small companies and their employees ?

Do you realize that you are selling yourself cheap to large companies
who profit 10 times to 100 times more than what they pay you ?

Would you like to build your personal brand and reputation or just add
to brand and profits of your employers ?

What if you could choose your role, your place of work, how much you
want to earn and make a difference ?

If answer is yes .

Then do attend BOF session for Open Source Business Proposal at
Linux Asia 2007.

Here we propose

[ilugd] Another use of graphics card

2007-01-31 Thread Mithun Bhattacharya
Found a interesting use for graphics card's dedicated RAM - might be useful if
you have a server where you dont need the graphics card at all or have a high
end graphics card but no games to play on Linux ;) Do note hyper memory and
similar technologies are actually stealing your RAM and are not dedicated
memory modules.
http://hedera.linuxnews.pl/_news/2002/09/03/_long/1445.html

If you have a really cool graphics card with DDR3 RAM your SWAP might run
faster than your DDR2 RAM :).

[ilugd] Intel 3945 with WPA2

2007-01-31 Thread Mithun Bhattacharya
Does anyone have success getting a Intel 3945 wifi card working with a wifi
router configured with WPA2 authentication.

As of now I have had luck with the following:
1. Configured the ipw3945 module and wpa_supplicant
2. I can browse available wifi access points
3. I can use a static IP other than what my Windows was assigned and ping the
router

The following doesnt work

1. DHCP gives a timeout - windows gets an IP through DHCP without a problem
2. The kernel module doesnt load automatically when I run wpa_supplicant even
though I have alias eth0 ipw3945 in my /etc/modprobe.conf and the
preinstall/postinstall setup in /etc/modprobe.d/ipw3945. It works fine if I do
a modprobe ipw3945
3. I cant ping the router if I use the IP which Windows got before I rebooted
into Linux

Any suggestion would be highly appreciated.

[ilugd] The MS trojan horse in Linux Asia 2007

2007-01-31 Thread Sandip Bhattacharya
In the Economic Times (at Bangalore) today, there is an article on page
6 titled MS takes linux world by storm

When asked about its participation in Linux Asia, Microsoft said that
the company will try to educate clients and communicate about its new
stance towards open source. Mr Radhesh Balakrishnan, director, platform
strategy, Microsoft, told ET, “Open source software is turning
commercial and commercial software is becoming more open to open source.
We believe that interoperability between the two is the way to the
future. People have created a myth in the minds of clients that the
world can work only either on open source. Rather than being carried
over by rhetoric, clients should rather look at lowering TCO (total cost
of ownership). According to a Frost Sullivan study, Windows offers
15.9% lower TCO than Linux on the server side.’’

It is quite obvious what their point of participating in the event is
about. I don't understand how a company which doesn't contribute to
Linux is any positive/constructive way, can be allowed to participate in
such an event. What is the criteria for participating in this apparently
Linux event?

Conversely, is there any way a Linux company can participate in an
Microsoft promoting event and talk about the virtues of Linux?

uuthat amongst others is why ILUG-D stayed away from the event.

Conversely, is there any way a Linux company can participate in an
Microsoft promoting event and talk about the virtues of Linux?

Let us find out by proposing such a participation at next MS event and
if they refuse try to highlight it in press. Unfortunately most of the
main stream press does not know or care.

On second thoughts should we post this traversity by LA
management on all lists that we are collectively members of? We can
ask them to send a email of protest to LA organisers. Or put up this

Count starts from me and if there are twenty / thirty people for it

much larger user base.

NRC-FOSS participation was decided when we thought ilugd was running
the show in collaboration with LFY. The microsoft news came too late
in the day for changing plans (we *are* a govt thingie and not too
much into protesting). However our participation is far less than it
would have been had ilugd been part of the show. I personally have
been making a noise, but there are a lot of oss people who are
neutral to microsoft - and even target the microsoft platform. In
fact, a large number of foss applications spend more of their time
finetuning the microsoft ports of their applications than the linux
ports. Each to his own poison.

I agree however that a try should be made to introduce FOSS into a

Re: [ilugd] The MS trojan horse in Linux Asia 2007

2007-01-31 Thread Vishnu Gopal
I'm not sure what's wrong, is the money somehow tainted? In the all
the events I've organized the sponsors don't have much of a say on
*how* the event is organized, or what is actually said/done at the
event. Just that they want this much space for the stalls, this much
of time on stage, this much of projector space, their name in the
branding etc... not sure it's that much of a problem.

Is your opposition on ideological grounds? Then it's definitely a no-no.

I think LCA is the REAL os conference, and I don't see MS there
  http://lca2007.linux.org.au/Sponsors and neither for oscon
  http://conferences.oreillynet.com/os2006/ nor for foss.in
  http://foss.in/2006/info/Main_Page

past avatars of foss.in have had microsoft speakers - nothing wrong
there. But accepting microsoft sponsorship is a different kettle of
 fish altogether
