If people on TAG have used such systems I would appreciate feedback. CVS: seems to be the classic solution. Cons: People say it is old and unmaintained code which is end-of-life. Mercurial: One of the modern VC systems considered notable on Rick Moen's knowledge base. One difficulty with hg is that it insists on the distributed model. Putting the version control history outside /etc (a la CVS) would require convoluted mounts. GIT: Another modern VC system (though not notable as per Rick's kb). It is rather similar to Mercurial in many ways. One difference is that one can use the environment variable GIT_DIR to point to a different directory for storing VC history. Some reasons to keep VC history outside /etc: 1. This way one can easily check for cruft without adding an explicit ignore for .hg or .git ... 2. Uses less space in /etc. 3. Can keep the history on an archival disk safe from potential corruption. Any thoughts/suggestions by people on TAG are welcome as usual! [ilugd] fossconf update
Hi, Fossconf took place in Chennai on Feb 1 - 3 2008. There were around 100 talks, 40 demo stalls with student projects done in FOSS and tutorial sessions. The attendance was around 700 on the first day, 1500-2000 on the second day and around 600 on the third day. About 80% of the audience were engineering college students. Volunteers and student projects came from engineering colleges in Chennai as well as from colleges in Salem, Madurai, Vellore and Tirunelveli. Most of the speakers were first time speakers, and although the bulk of them were from Tamilnadu, we had speakers from Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Goa, Trivandrum and Nellore. We also had a large number of speakers from the academic community who were participating in a FOSS event for the first time. The event was pretty chaotic at times since all of us were n00bs at conducting conferences. Many speakers had a rough time. In spite of the huge attendance, poor logistics lead to many talks having a very thin audience. But by and large, the feedback we have got has been positive. You could probably even script Firefox to run this from the command line. I'm looking for some set of tools that could render and save the page as an image without interaction from the user. One that would work without X preferred, but in a pinch X-based will do too. For non-x: links2 with snapscreenshot (http://bisqwit.iki.fi/source/snapscreenshot.html), should do it but I haven't tried it. Within x I'd maybe mangle together xwd with -nobdrs,throwing in xwininfo (applied to firefox) to extract firefox's window id from it followed by convert (- from imagemagick). Not sure if it can be done at that conveniently high level though and how you'd hide the firefox shenanigans (send to dummy display driver?). There is apparently a headless firefox around for this sort of thing. Let me know how you do it in the end.
