Net4 is also providing good service at competitive rates.

I can highly recommend E2E Networks http://e2enetworks.com if you are open
 to cloud hosting.

They've their servers in India, and hence have excellent connectivity, low
latency, and works well even if the international bandwidth is choked of
your isp. Also, they've a technically competent staff; in fact it's being
run by Tarun Dua who's also a member on this list.

Hi everyone,
There is a planned Localization sprint for Sahana on 1st November,

and do a quality check.
You can track the announcement/discussion thread located here

Also, we are trying to have it for other languages as well in case we
get some people to participate.

It is planned to be a day long activity and we will use the Sahana
localization mailing list and the #sahana IRC Channel on freenode for
communication for the purpose.

Would request all who are into translation to participate in it and help
contribute to Sahana.

Sarai has agreed to host the sprint and allowed us to use the CSDS
Seminar Hall for the same. Thanks to Mr. Gora Mohanty :-)

Please feel free to send in comments and suggestions about the same.
And do join in the Sahana mailing list and send in your confirmations.

Re: [ilugd] Hindi Rendering Problem

2007-10-03 Thread Ajay Kumar
Puneet,

If the matra in 'कि' renders after the 'क', you will need a CTL enabled
build of firefox.

To check if you have the right build...

Type about:buildconfig without the quotes in firefox's address box.
You will see something like the following, and would need to check for
the --enable-pango flag.

Configure arguments

--host=i486-linux-gnu --build=i486-linux-gnu --prefix=/usr
'--mandir=${prefix}/share/man' '--infodir=${prefix}/share/info'
--enable-default-toolkit=gtk2
--with-default-mozilla-five-home=/usr/lib/firefox /_*--enable-pango
*_/--with-user-appdir=.mozilla --with-system-png=/usr
--with-system-jpeg=/usr --disable-mailnews --disable-composer
--disable-ldap --enable-postscript --disable-installer --disable-xprint
--enable-crypto --disable-strip --disable-strip-libs --enable-canvas
--enable-svg --enable-svg-renderer=cairo --enable-system-cairo
--enable-mathml --disable-tests --disable-gtktest --disable-debug
--enable-xft '--enable-optimize=-pipe\ -w\ -O2\ -g\
-fno-strict-aliasing' --with-system-zlib=/usr --without-system-nspr
--enable-xinerama --enable-extensions=default --disable-pedantic
--disable-long-long-warning --enable-single-profile
--disable-profilesharing --enable-gnomevfs --enable-application=browser
--disable-installer --disable-updater --enable-chrome-format=flat
--disable-elf-dynstr-gc --enable-system-myspell --enable-libthai
--with-distribution-id=com.ubuntu --enable-official-branding

Also ensure that you have Pango installed and a mozilla specific
environment variable (MOZ_ENABLE_PANGO=1) set. Just google for it if you
still can not get it to work.

Cheers,
Ajay

So I believe the problem has something to do with my Ubuntu System.

Re: [ilugd] Spam Re: Hindi Rendering Problem

2007-10-03 Thread Ajay Kumar

wonderful - so after 3 years or so, firefox guys are uninterested in
the second largest country in the world. How come Konqueror manages it?
Aren't we being a little hard on them? If I were to interpret what
firefox developers might be saying (completely my words), it would go
something like this:

We have checked the code into firefox to enable complex text layout
necessary for some non latin scripts including many from indic, arabic,
south east asian, and arabic languages. For anyone distributing firefox
for these languages, please compile with the options required to enable
CTL. We are not enabling it by default for everyone, because the
performance penalty for the rest of the users does not justify the gains
as most indic (or other such language) speakers browse the web in
english. (More so, they generate most of their web content in english,
and use english language skills as a differentiator to show/feel that
they are educated and high class.)

After that it is the responsibility of the indian foss community and
other government agencies to make sure that ctl builds are available.
For instance ubuntu and many other distributions' firefox build is by
default ctl enabled, and all one needs to do is set the environment
variable.

I have personally never had problems with firefox w.r.t. indic. So, feel
a little bad if the good folks at firefox get bad PR due to
misunderstanding.

If someone feels that it is not enough, they should find the firefox /
ubuntu / redhat / your favorite distribution forums and make a case as
they deem appropriate. I'd be happy to contribute to any discussion
regarding enabling ctl by default in firefox.

Cheers,
Ajay

Re: [ilugd] [off-topic] UPS catches fire

2007-09-06 Thread Ajay Kumar

 more specific questions:
how old is your luminous? is it an invertor?

Not very old. +2 years.
what kind of load have you connected to it? lights, fans, comps?

1100 W of fans, exhausts, comps and lighting - relatively stable load
of about 600-700 W at power factors of about 0.6-0.7 (guessing) so about
1000 - 1100 KVA .
Rest intermittent loads like the food processor, water pump, washing
machine (without water heating and the spin cycle) etc.

All within the energy budget I guess.

is your luminous a pure sinewave, or a step-sine, or placeholder?

They do call it a pure sinewave, but I have not connected an
oscilloscope to check. Nevertheless, however big an inductor they may
have used, they would still have their chopping frequency present in the
output. Again, I haven't checked for I don't have at hand an osciloscope
or other device combination like a step down transformer to use with the
mic jack.

Ajay

2007-09-05 Thread Ajay Kumar
I've been using a Luminous inverter (1.8 KVA) and had no specific
troubles until I neglected checking the batteries for evaporated water.
It so happens that all this current passing through the batteries burns
the water out due to ohmic heating and could eventually damage the
batteries. I am sure you know all that.

Nevertheless the setup was back in operation once the water was added
and the batteries recharged. I usually add distilled / ro water to the bank.

I also hope we are all aware of the environmental issues with the lead
of the lead acid batteries. Among other things, lead causes mental
retardation.

Cheers,
Ajay

 dear all,

a few nights ago my home was filled with thick, burning smoke. an
online UPS caught fire at night, took almost an hour to battle the
flames. the dangerous aspect was the truck-sized batteries connected
to it for 8 to 12 hours of backup during power failures. took another
hour for exhaust fans to clear the air, and even now the place has
residue acrid smells of the smoke fire.

never mind the details, don't wish to repeat them. nasty experience.

this UPS was used to power lights and fans, like an inverter.
the setup's been working fine since 1999 with the usual regular maintenance
 etc.

i've been installing and using UPSes for since 1989 and am familiar
with all aspects of it. must have installed several dozen at various
sites till date, never had any problems. this may have been a freak
 accident.

need your immediate advise and suggestions please.
to power lights and fans for a rating of about 1KVA to 1.5KVA, should
i go in for an online UPS or the new crop of pure-sinewave inverters?

more importantly, which brand would you recommend, and/or know works
 in a similar setup reliably?

any specific things to watch out for in the unit?

 thanks for your advise.

[ilugd] FOSS Workshops [Was: Re: Minutes of August ILUGD meet]

2007-08-25 Thread Ajay Kumar
Glad to see some movement on the list.

While there were many takers for the need to have a lug meeting
dedicated to content creation and digital learning, the supporters for
evangelism were not very vocal. I personally think that the lug should
have a brainstorming session for spreading the awareness.

And going to engineering colleges can serve both the purposes. They are
in education, are technically inclined :), and are going to benefit the
most from advances in opensource software. They could also be
instrumental in creating educational content if the right message is
sent out.

LUG / Kenneth/ Dr. Srinivasan, I know of a few engineering colleges in
Chandigarh that would be interested. I am sure some of them would also
be happy to host such an event. Coincidentally, I'll be traveling to the
place sometime soon. If the LUG and NRC-FOSS are keen, should I pursue
the matter with them?

Cheers,
Ajay

if you organise a teachers training camp - 1,2 or 3 days, NRC-FOSS
will be happy to pay for the expenses. Only we would like teachers
from more than one college to come. We can also help them to get
leave OOD by contacting the managements. If you are interested please
contact Dr Srinivasan who cc-ed on this mail

Re: [ilugd] ILUG-Delhi meeting 2pm Sun., 19th Aug., at JNU

2007-08-14 Thread Ajay Kumar
Gora / Luggers,

My name is Ajay Kumar, and after having been a reasonably accomplished
technologist, I am now working full time on Education Technology
facilitation.

Would love to meet the LUG and make new friends in Delhi, to which I
know I am welcome. I also wanted to know if I could make a slight pitch
for the need of OSS to increase focus on social development issues like
Digital Learning, Community Radio, Telecenters, etc.

The thoughts that I want to share are on the lines of the mindmap posted
at http://www.classapart.org.

Wondering if the last minute addition of agenda is possible.?

Cheers,
Ajay

 Hi,
The next ILUG-Delhi meeting will be held at 2pm, at the JNU
Bio-Informatics Centre, on Sun., Aug., 19th. I am posting this
on behalf of our esteemed general secretary who is indisposed
courtesy of a non-fatal motorcycle accident (normally I would
extend more sympathy, but on a motorcycle on Delhi roads, you
are asking for it, in my opinion. Gaurav is up and about, and
should be at the meeting). Here is a tentative agenda:
 1. Presentation on OpenMoko by Deepank Gupta:
Introduction to OpenMoko
-
OpenMoko is the first truly open platform for Mobile Phones
and other Embedded Systems. Although we have open solution
for applications and GUI in PCs but there is nothing in the
Mobile phones. OpenMoko will provide the building blocks
which will give mobile developers the freedom to create
complex and innovative applications and will benifit everyone
ranging from consumers to service providers, hardware developers
and tech-enthusiasts.

This presentation will aim at introducing openMoko platform
along with the specifications and the hardware of neo1973 (the
first phone over which openMoko has been implemented). OpenMoko
platform is built over openEmbedded and provides its own set of
libraries over conventional Linux such as GSM, dbus, GPS etc.
The presentation will discuss about the current state of work
done on the platform and provide an introduction on the various
build tools such as bitbake and openembedded needed for the
development. It will also include a sneak preview into QEMU.

The platform is still in a pre-alpha stage and is undergoing
rapid development. So, the current phone is only meant for
geeks and tech-enthusiasts, I will include a tutorial on
flashing openMoko on the neo and will also include demos for
playing songs and making calls from the phone.

 2. Review of status of freed.in, and open call for volunteers:
If you are interested in working for freed.in 2007, please
be at the meeting.

 3. Atul Chitnis, of foss.in fame, will also be at the meeting.
According to him, he is only here to listen, so it is up to
you all to show up and stop him from speaking. Seriously
though, this is a good opportunity to show up, and hear
about the refocused aims of foss.in, and to talk about how
better to join hands to foster a genuine FOSS movement across
India.

 Regards,
 Gora
