I see hostgator has India operations. Any recommendations/reviews ? Net4 is also providing good service at competitive rates. I can highly recommend E2E Networks http://e2enetworks.com if you are open to cloud hosting. They've their servers in India, and hence have excellent connectivity, low latency, and works well even if the international bandwidth is choked of your isp. Hi All, Just a friendly reminder for interested people willing to contribute to Sahana. The messaging module contributions are highly required, so even if you are not visiting the event this year, you can participate online as usual and contribute to the planning and development of the modules. Few people mailed me offlist, I request them to join the mailing list of Sahana mentioned on the wiki page http://wiki.sahana.lk/doku.php?id=dev:foss_in_2008_ideas and introduce themselves and work on the planning aspect. Puneet, If the matra in 'कि' renders after the 'क', you will need a CTL enabled build of firefox. To check if you have the right build... Re: [ilugd] Spam Re: Hindi Rendering Problem
wonderful - so after 3 years or so, firefox guys are uninterested in the second largest country in the world. How come Konqueror manages it? Aren't we being a little hard on them? If I were to interpret what firefox developers might be saying (completely my words), it would go something like this: We have checked the code into firefox to enable complex text layout necessary for some non latin scripts including many from indic, arabic, south east asian, and arabic languages. For anyone distributing firefox for these languages, please compile with the options required to enable CTL. We are not enabling it by default for everyone, because the performance penalty for the rest of the users does not justify the gains as most indic (or other such language) speakers browse the web in english. (More so, they generate most of their web content in english, and use english language skills as a differentiator to show/feel that they are educated and high class.) After that it is the responsibility of the indian foss community and other government agencies to make sure that ctl builds are available. For instance ubuntu and many other distributions' firefox build is by default ctl enabled, and all one needs to do is set the environment variable. I have personally never had problems with firefox w.r.t. indic. So, feel a little bad if the good folks at firefox get bad PR due to misunderstanding. If someone feels that it is not enough, they should find the firefox / ubuntu / redhat / your favorite distribution forums and make a case as they deem appropriate. I'd be happy to contribute to any discussion regarding enabling ctl by default in firefox. Re: [ilugd] [off-topic] UPS catches fire
more specific questions: how old is your luminous? is it an invertor? Not very old. +2 years. what kind of load have you connected to it? lights, fans, comps? 1100 W of fans, exhausts, comps and lighting - relatively stable load of about 600-700 W at power factors of about 0.6-0.7 (guessing) so about 1000 - 1100 KVA . Rest intermittent loads like the food processor, water pump, washing machine (without water heating and the spin cycle) etc. All within the energy budget I guess. is your luminous a pure sinewave, or a step-sine, or placeholder? They do call it a pure sinewave, but I have not connected an oscilloscope to check. Nevertheless, however big an inductor they may have used, they would still have their chopping frequency present in the output. Again, I haven't checked for I don't have at hand an osciloscope or other device combination like a step down transformer to use with the mic jack. Re: [ilugd] [off-topic] UPS catches fire
I've been using a Luminous inverter (1.8 KVA) and had no specific troubles until I neglected checking the batteries for evaporated water. It so happens that all this current passing through the batteries burns the water out due to ohmic heating and could eventually damage the batteries. I am sure you know all that. Nevertheless the setup was back in operation once the water was added and the batteries recharged. I usually add distilled / ro water to the bank. I also hope we are all aware of the environmental issues with the lead of the lead acid batteries. Among other things, lead causes mental retardation. [ilugd] FOSS Workshops [Was: Re: Minutes of August ILUGD meet]
Glad to see some movement on the list. While there were many takers for the need to have a lug meeting dedicated to content creation and digital learning, the supporters for evangelism were not very vocal. I personally think that the lug should have a brainstorming session for spreading the awareness. And going to engineering colleges can serve both the purposes. They are in education, are technically inclined :), and are going to benefit the most from advances in opensource software. They could also be instrumental in creating educational content if the right message is sent out. Although we have open solution for applications and GUI in PCs but there is nothing in the Mobile phones. OpenMoko will provide the building blocks which will give mobile developers the freedom to create complex and innovative applications and will benifit everyone ranging from consumers to service providers, hardware developers and tech-enthusiasts. This presentation will aim at introducing openMoko platform along with the specifications and the hardware of neo1973 (the first phone over which openMoko has been implemented). OpenMoko platform is built over openEmbedded and provides its own set of libraries over conventional Linux such as GSM, dbus, GPS etc. The presentation will discuss about the current state of work done on the platform and provide an introduction on the various build tools such as bitbake and openembedded needed for the development. It will also include a sneak preview into QEMU. The platform is still in a pre-alpha stage and is undergoing rapid development. So, the current phone is only meant for geeks and tech-enthusiasts, I will include a tutorial on flashing openMoko on the neo and will also include demos for playing songs and making calls from the phone. 2. Review of status of freed.in, and open call for volunteers: If you are interested in working for freed.in 2007, please be at the meeting. 3. Atul Chitnis, of foss.in fame, will also be at the meeting. According to him, he is only here to listen, so it is up to you all to show up and stop him from speaking.
