[ilugd] How do I record LPs using a Linux Box?

2004-03-02 Thread Ashwin Baindur
Dear all,

I´ve got a stackful of LPs. Irreplacable to me. I want to record them, myself.
I´ve got a Comp with Red Hat 8.0, a borrowed laptop with Mandrake 9.2 and a
Record Plater (currently in disrepair).

Can anyone tell me what hardware and software I need?
Yes, I am googling and I am starting to go through the chaff.

If anyone know how, would really appreciate his help in putting it up. Free
beer promised during sessions.

Thanx in advance,
AshLin

Hey, listen!
Anyone wants Linux loaded, bring your own machine. Better still, learn to do
so yourself. I ain't gonna permit strange hard disks to be attached to my
machine. Never know where they've been. Besides I'm a one-machine man.
Seriously though, its a newbie meet, not an install-fest. That requires a
totally different administrative setup, approach and expertise. It's a good
idea, but at perhaps the Jan meet.
So I feel we may limit the Linux loading to one machine with
fedora/mandrake/suse for showing the ease of loading Linux and run the
Seven Steps on my machine.

[ilugd] The December Meet

2003-11-20 Thread Ashwin Baindur
Dear all,

We hope to make a small beginning in the right direction with regards to the
theme-based ILUGD meets. The next meet on 21 Dec 03 Sunday (timings later)
at :-
B6, Raksha Bhawan, Man Singh Rd (opposite Indira Kala Kendra) (between
Rajpath and Andhra Pradesh Bhawan.

The theme is - Helping GNUbies.

The following are planned :-
* An introductory talk on the Linux Movement.
* To show Linux on a machine and how the utilities can be easily used :-
Openoffice.org, xmms,mozilla, evolution, A game.
* To show a simple install of a Linux Distribution.
* To show them some books, resources available so that they are aware.
* Showcase some of the steps of LL's Formula For Freedom based Samadhi or
should it be Nirvana?
* To keep a few Knoppix etc CDS available for sale.
* To allow them to meet some of 'the Gang', who can answer some questions.

How all of you can help!
* With ideas. We crystallise by say 01Dec and execute after that.
* With participation - Though I'm a Linux enthusiast, I live in the Windows
world of Government - I'm not a day to day user of Linux - though I hope to
be in my next posting/appointment. I need help with each aspect of the
above.
* With help - Volunteers required please who can showcase the install, the
use of the Seven Steps to Samadhi programmes, speak on Newbie topics.
* With resources - For example, I'd appreciate if you can bring some Linux
books, CDs or something to the meet to show/inspire/educate the Newbie.
* By passing the word to Newbies about this Golden Opprtunity - if we can
get even say a dozen newbies of whom say even three-four get hooked - we'd
have achieved success. Anything more than that would be good success, great
success or extraordinary success (depending on how many come .AND. become
Linux-lovers).

I'd be able to do a little bit of each of the things I've asked help for -
but the success of an ILUGD Meet depends on - how many ILUGDites actually
come, and as importantly, how many get 'involved' in organising the meet.

Now, dear ILUGDites - the cat is out of the bag. Let's put our words into
action and move forward to make the Meet a success.

PS - I promise to deliver on the Jungle Juice ;-) .

This time the theme of the Dec. 21st ILUGD Meet is
7 Steps to the Software Samadhi by LinuxLingam

i happened to see this kind of theme based meets in bangaloere. quite
impressed by the presence there. wish i can see something like that
happening in delhi also. i happened to attaend some meets based on Linux
and WLAN, embedded Linux, Indian Languages on Linux etc. believe me
the
presence was 100 in some of the successfull meets. and i believe there
shudn't be any problem in taking some good ideas from somewhere else. may
be
we can come out with something little better and spend quality time during

[ilugd] Hot News! The Assault of the Momo-Eaters and other Linux issues

2003-11-18 Thread Ashwin Baindur
The minutes of the meet. I've sent them thrice - it seems to /dev/null! Help
me put them up on the list. Regards, Ashwin

Hot News! The Assault of the Momo-Eaters and other Linux issues

New Delhi is under threat ! The latest outrage was committed by a group of
Linux buffs in Dilli Haat on citizens enjoying a tranquil Sunday afternoon
in the salubrious surrounds of Dilli Haat. The ILUGDites, as they call
themselves, demolished every plate of Momos and Pav Bhaji and drank every
cup of Coffee they came across - leaving an aghast citizenry open-jawed and
hungry.

We spoke to Mr Khidki, from the MegaHard corporation who bitterly reproached
the incident ,We shall not allow these cyber terrorists from preventing
peaceful companies from carrying out legitimate profitable business. They
hound us everywhere with their viral licences. Now they trouble us in Dilli
Haat also during our few authorised moments of peace .

The Thana i/c Dilli Haat Goon Squad stated that the following were
identified at the scene by witnesses :-
Self-styled Generallisimo Raju Mathur - wielding threats of an unknown
Weapon of Mass Destruction - codenamed GnuPG.
Supython Sethi - Hi.
Penguinhead Kaushal - The arch enemu of Windowsman.
Kishore 'Moneybags' Bhargava - the fiendish financer.
Tarun 'The Evil Secretary Bird' Dua
Jazzmeet UnWorthy
Xyberdip(aka Nagadeepan)
Ashish 'The Cyber Kid' Mukherjee
Vivek 'Logo Loony' Khurana
Anuj Sharma alias The Man from HCLPEROT
Sudev 'Still Threatening to Learn Linux!' Barar
Wee Wee Wiwek
Chief Big Pony Tail Chandra - How!
A Lolita named Sharma from the Great Beyond with sidekick Bob 'Who needs
Mike?' Adkins
Rajesh Kumar (a very sinister and secretive character indeed - even the FBI
worries about such people with perfectly normal names).
and of course Ashwin Baindur - the Fastest Mouth in the West of India

Well, there they all were. Had the Thought Police but known - they could
have rounded them all up - except for one archenemy who stayed away from the
Matrix - Linux Lingam.

The conspiracy began at a shady corner of the Dilli Haat auditorium - after
Raju scared mooning couples away with a red pill! The gang true to form
turned up in ones and twos to avoid detection. The early birds got sprained
necks from watching out for beautiful birds - who could well have been
planted by the cops to spy on the meet. Thoroughly disappointed at not
finding this to be the case, they then sprained the other side of their
necks trying to decide which of the Dilbert characters heading doggedly for
the fence at the very end of Dilli Haat could possibly be the Highly
Intelligent ILUGDites coming for the meet.

The first agenda item of the meeting was the forming of the Secret Terrorist
Society. The President Designate Raju Mathur and Treasurer Designate Kishore
asked for a Secretary Designate. The two contenders - Tarun and Vivek (not
Wiwek) slugged it out till Tarun got his arm-twisted by the hoi polloi into
accepting the job for a complete 12 months. He is to be aided, despite his
wishes, by Vivek. To sidetrack Vivek from the glory that will be his as
Founding Secretary, Vivek has been tasked with a miracle - to get three
viable logos for the Holy Grail project of ILUGD - The Sacred Penguin Toga
sometimes called a T-shirt. That should keep him busy, hee hee hee!

The second agenda point was who was to be given the plum post of being the
convenor of the next meet. There being a very large number of aspirants,
Ashwin clinched the deal by offering free beer to the Selection Committee.
Jagmohan Dalmiya, watchout! So the next meet will be at Ashwin's. Since
Fauji's can't count beyond five, the meet is going to be basically Gnubie
oriented because they are about the only people Ashwin can impress with his
NO-ledge of Linux. Anyway if there's beer - sab kuch chalta hai.

The third point that Raju had to make is that such 'do perl or die' issues
can only be concluded when the pact is signed in blood! So he expects all
the ILUGDites to donate blood for his favorite vampire - the Red Cross near
Parliament next Sunday. More from him online later.

The meeting then decided on the nefarious activities to be undertaken. The
first is for ILUGDites to strike at Linux Bangalore. After that organised
mayhem at the LINUX Meet in Delhi next February. Ambition! Ambition!

It was after this point that things got out of hand. The people at the
Honest and Fresh Coffee stand were threatened into turning over a large part
of their premises for the orgy of momos and pav-bhaji that ensued - things
began to get quite hot. The stand-owners were finally bribed into silence by
ordering gallons of coffee. The last point to decide before leaving was to
decide that the next meet will be a real 'bash'.

[ilugd] Some Topics we gnubies want to discuss over Momos and Coffee

2003-11-08 Thread Ashwin Baindur
Dear Raj and LL,

A meet is long overdue. The problem appears to be twofold - suitable site
and suitable speakers! So I second Raj's suggestion to have a discussion
fest at Dilli Haat. Some things needing discussion :-

What's fedora exactly about?

The BSA attempt to 'subvert' children and teachers!

The creeping attempts by commerce to take away our digital rights.

Are we as Indians actually capable of collaborating and coming up with some
small eeny-weeny useful project...?

I volunteer to put up a Gnubie related meet in December at my home.
Open-air. A machine in which we install Linux. Good chai and some snakes.
I'd offer beer if you can get Microsoft or SCO to subsidise it ;-). Anyone
willing to help me, I'd appreciate since I'm mostly a Linux squib! (Dont
know what a squib is?...Go re-read your Harry Potter.

By the way, I'm downloading TLDP documents and files to burn on a CD as a
quick ref. No need to spend good money/time for each person to do so. Just
copy from the CD. I also thought to include...
umm, perhaps some tutorials, ebooks, Gutenberg...any ideas, folks?

Regards, Ashwin

PS - Oh yes, do flame me for using Hotmail and Outlook Express.

[ilugd] Minutes of the Kirtan (definitely on topic)

2003-08-26 Thread Ashwin Baindur
Namaskaar Penguin-bhakts,

The Linux community of ILUGD faithfuls met at Guru Raju Mathur's Ashram to
ponder on high ideals and to carry out the ritual sacrifice of a cake and
box of sweets to celebrate the Twelveteenth birthday of our beloved Bhagwan
Linux.

The event was begun with a pravachan by Pandit Tarun Dua who spoke on the
importance of TCO in our lives and how we should calculate costs to keep the
shaitan Maikro-Naram out of our lives. The laity were encouraged to
interact with the Panditji which they did with such abandon as to alarm him.
He cautioned us all against the careless voicing of the name of the demon,
lest like You Know Who or Sauron, we invoke the evils of “openings in the
wall, with panes of wood and glass, for looking out and getting fresh air”.

The faithful then chanted a bhajan sung by Bhai Viksit jisne hame Gaur se
Intrusion Detection Systems ke bare mein bataya, while unbelievers SNORTed
at his verse. His melliflous voice touched everyone and they sat spellbound
as if they were high on ACID while he explained the intricacies of securing
host systems and networks.
After this, the mystic sadhu Spoonman unraveled the dark secrets of
spamassassin and postfix, aided by an Akashwani a la Bharti Telecom who
filled in what mere mortals cannot know about these arcane secrets.

The congregation was soothed by the harmonious notes of Linux Lingam on
his guitar, what did you think? Not wanting to be left out, Guru
Rajuji's Linux box pitched in with musical compositions of it's own, which
forced seer after seer to eagerly explain to the unbelieving congregation
that these were NOT sounds of heavenly digestion BUT a godly karaoke, which
were the creation of Bhagwan Linux himself.

Alas, the enlightening ended too soon, and, disappointedly, the faithful
sacrificed the cake and sweets in a subdued manner. They dutifully recalled
the very first utterings of the prophet Linus Torvalds in the epic
comp.os.minix. Seeing some of the folk still suffering from rumblings of
hungry tummies, Guruji took pity on them and transported these souls to
Shefali, near IIT Barista, where Prashad of chaat and rolls were reverently
partaken by all. Others rumbled in a different way, making the usual dark
allegations about the diversion of offerings of the faithful to the
vicarious pleasures of life by Guruji and his coterie.

All said and done, everyone would have had a good time, if it were not for a
certain Ashwin Baindur who cased the joint, noted each and every person's
alias, number and ID and at the last moment strayed from the straight and
narrow by joining the gang at Shefali for the spoils. Will someone please do
something about him? As Guruji was heard saying “Will no one rid me of this
.?”.

Afterthought – Thanks to Kishore and for the lovely cake and sweets.
Besides the usual geeks and goons, we had amongst us Edwin Walls, an
interesting gentleman, and the vivacious Vandana Gombar, a very Special
Correspondent of...what was that rag, once again?

PS : To those who frown at my light-heartedness about such sacred matters, I
thumb my nose at them, NYAA, and taunt them to write the minutes of the next
meeting themselves.
