[ilugd] Linux User Group at NSIT

2008-01-23 Thread Deepank Gupta
Hi,

We are setting up a Linux User Group at NSIT owing to the increasing
awareness about Open Source in our college due to some wonderful open-source
projects done by students and participation at open source seminars
happening in the past twelve months.

We have got a strong logistics and management team of dedicated students in
place and would also like to provide ILUG-D with a venue for future events.
One of the primary goals of the group will be to transform NSIT into a
strong base for open-source in the coming years.

Please give us your views on the above proposal.

Re: [ilugd] [OT]Wireless Router

2007-09-10 Thread Deepank Gupta
Hi Puneet,

You have two options regarding partitioning - either go for a clean
install by formatting the drive and dividing the whole into two
partitions - One for Ubuntu and one for Windows Vista.

Or a better option would be to resize the disk in Windows Vista as it
includes its own partition-resizing utility and create enough space
for Ubuntu to sit on.

Regarding your query on Wireless routers, you should either go for
NetGear which is a cheaper option which should be around 2k or go for
a slightly higher one byD-Link.

I would be really thankful if any of you could provide me with some helpful

Another question that I have is how do i go about installing Ubuntu on this
laptop. Should i format the drive, install ubuntu and then install the Vista
Home Preimium that comes along with it.
The pre paritioned configuration has a recovery partition also.Whats that
bit for, and does it need to be recreated for Vista to run??

2007-09-02 Thread Deepank Gupta
Hi,

I think that this can be the final schedule :

Niyam - dazzling demo of the artist in open source and some motivational talk.
Kishore - showing of the modern programming languages
Gora - showcase web2.0 as cannot exist without open source - utube,
flicker, google OR career opportunities in open-source and development
methodologies.
Sudev - Brief talk with NSITians ...

Raj, if you would be able to spare some time to come and interact with
NSITians, it will be great. Please tell if there are some more changes
in the schedule are to be done as we will be putting up posters and
all on Monday.

Thanks Regards,
Deepank.

@Gora
Please have a talk on how to join an open source project and talk
about the various development practices used in open-source. I am
saying this because most of the NSITians land in plush jobs after
graduation and also the fact that most of the attendees will be
looking forward to doing some good projects in open-source.

@Vivek
You are very right :). Nescafe will have lots of sales on Wednesday
and I am already having the feeling of deja vu as there was a lot of
heat generated in the August meeting of ILUG over the properiety
formats like Flash and other content generation tools.

Full circle magazine does rock. Its layout is really very very good
and even better than some of the other paid magazines. Anyone can
visit the magazine at the url : http://fullcirclemagazine.org . I have

[ilugd] Agenda for talk at NSIT

2007-09-01 Thread Deepank Gupta
Hi,

We are going to have a talk on Linux and Open-Source at NSIT
Auditorium on 5th September from 3:30 to 5:30 by ILUG in association
with CSI, NSIT. Here is the list of speakers and the tentative topics
on which we would like the talk to be about.

Niyam - Motivating students towards open-source and introduction to freed.
  Kishore - Benifits of open-source.
Gora - How to contribute to open-source and get a project in open-source.
Raj - Networking or Philosophy of GPL
Sudev - Career opportunities in open-source.

We will be having the talks for about 30 minutes each. This is a
tentative list, so please feel free to change them.

NSIT is the sister college of DCE registered under Delhi university,
located in Sector - 3, Dwarka, New Delhi. The talk will be held in the
college auditorium in the adminstrative block.

Thanks for all the support...

Sorry for replying late, was not able to get the internet access.

Niyam - dazzling demo of the artist in open source
Kishore - showing of the modern programming languages?
Gora - showcase web2.0 as cannot exist without open source - utube,
 flicker, google.
Sudev - Show off that new palm size thing client and what you can do
 with it in open source
Raj - Networking or Philosophy of GPL

I think that these set of topics do look better; but if
somebody(Kishore, Gora or Sudev) could also speak about getting good
projects in open-source, career opportunities and about the
development methodology of open-source, it would be really good.
However, the prospect of seeing palm size client looks too good to me.

I could not understand the first one though - Dazzling demo of artist
in open-source. Does that include publishing and image tools for
artists of open-source or something else. I really wanted a
motivational talk by Niyam.

Deepank

Actually if your senior gives you permission to copy his/her thesis
  it's
not a copyright violation. It may, however, be deprecated for other
  reasons (plagiarism, etc.).

if you have permission it is not plagiarism either

These are precisely the things that we are mostly unaware of and I
have myself seen the importance of quoting other people's work and
getting to know about licenses under which the material you are
quoting has been registered. Kamal can be the perfect person to help
us know about various issues related to licenses.

We are going to have a technical fest - Innovision in the first week
of October at NSIT which would be attended by college students from
all over NCR. It will be great if Kamal and other people could come to
give talks on various issues related to open-source. I along with some
of my classmates am also organising a Linux Challenge for a second
year in the row. And some talks by eminent people from ILUG would
perfectly complement it. I had a talk with Dr. Gora and Gaurav about
it too and both of them were very interested in the endeavour.

I hope Kamal, Ajay and others would be able to spare their time for it.

[ilugd] Invitation for a talk at NSIT

2007-08-30 Thread Deepank Gupta
Dear all,

I, a student at NSIT, would like to invite ILUG members for a talk on
Linux in general and freed in particular at NSIT on 5th September,
Wednesday, 3:30 - 5:30 P.M.

Many people in our college are motivated about Linux and open-source.
It will be great if some of the experienced developers and
contributors could come and share their experiences with working in
open-source with my fellow students. I had a wonderful experience
talking to Dr. Gora, Atul Chitnis, Kishore Bhargava, Mrs.Valsa
Williams from Intel, Advocate who has been in open-source years before
I was even born, Ajay, Kapil and Niyam Bhushan who motivated us all
regarding freed. I would like ILUG members to come and share their
thoughts and experiences with the whole of NSIT as they did with me at
the August meet of ILUGD.

Looking forward to meeting you again at NSIT campus in Dwarka.

Hi,

@Gaurav : We would like to have the talk concentrating on the methods
by which open source development is done and how we as students can
involve ourselves with the open-source development. Gaurav, you
yourself can give your example of how you got a job with Dinesh in
United Villages through open-source. In addition to that, Dr. Gora
will definitely want to talk about the localization of Linux in Indian
languages.

Re: [ilugd] Invitation for a talk at NSIT

2007-08-30 Thread Deepank Gupta
Hi Kamal,

It is really great that you have offered to volunteer for a talk at
NSIT. You can really help us decide which licenses to choose while
starting up our own software projects. Often, many new startups face
problems related to licenses, and who would be more qualified than you
to give advise to startups in legal matters.

But I do not think that it will be a right idea to get students into
legal details of open-source as although it makes up a great topic to
hear to for a 3rd or a 4th year student, a 1st year may feel lost in
the talk. Moreover, it would be unfair to squeeze in 4 talks in a span
of 2 hours. If you will be willing, we will schedule a talk solely on
legal issues relating to open-source later in this semester.

@Linuxlingam : Have I made a mistake in addressing Gora Mohanty as a
doctor. I would like to apologise for the misunderstanding.

Thanks to all for the wonderful response from the ILUG community.

Regards
Deepank.
