[ilugd] Tally Alternatives - Gnucash , Homebank - India Localisation

2010-07-23 Thread vikram ranade
I was looking at alternates to Tally and noticed that the currency setup in
GnuCash has INR as an option.
Does anyone know if the localization for India is complete in Gnucash or
HomeBank?
http://www.gnucash.org/

Some googling revealed that Kalculate may be a good fit as well.
Any experiences ,thoughts?

Thanks!

My suggestion would be to have one small linux box made with a suitably
sized drive
(say 250GB or similar) and install BackupPC(http://backuppc.sourceforge.net/)
on it.
The linux box will not need a monitor or a kdb and can be easily be setup
and monitored
via browser.
We have been using this for some time now with excellent results and good
performance.
Infact our scale of deployment is fairly large with several hundred hosts
being backed up.

Re: [ilugd] Syncing Servers

2009-01-10 Thread vikram ranade
The first step would be to ensure that the data used by the lamp
applications and mail servers is replicated on both the machines
in near real time.
this can be done thru DRBD and a network share like (NFS or iscsi)

DRBD is kind of a RAID 1 over a network. If one of the drives or servers goes
down then the other one assumes its identity
and the application accesses the data over a network as if nothing
happened.

The next is to have a HA daemon such as Heartbeat that monitors the services
that you want to have always running.
This will monitor if the Primary server has failed and in such an event will
make the secondary server the primary server
(meaning that the secondary server will assume the identity of the promary
and will continue to service client/service
 requests)

Hope this helps

I've been using Linux on AMD exclusively for soem years now.
My latest board was an Asus M2N -SLI with an nvidia chipset
works flawlessly on Fedora 5,6,7 ,Ubunty feisty and gutsy.

Sorry CS- Source is not available on Linux and Valve has announced

The CS Server runs natively on Linux though.

Check out Urban Terror...it is similar to CS.

Will keep you posted when i setup a server.

[ilugd] [Gaming] Open source FPS games

2007-10-08 Thread Vikram Ranade
Dear All,
I had the chance to explore the world of opensource first Pe#rson

games this weekend and i was amazed to experience the quality of games
out there!

Back in my windows days I was an avid Counterstrike player. So much so
that i went through
the pain of playing Counterstrike and its variants under wine when i
switched to Linux completely. This was a far from ideal solution and
half the games had annoying issues with sound or mouse control.
The Steam Engine is pretty temperamental with Wine and Linux and I have
wasted many weekends struggling to get decent gaming with
Counter-strike- Source.

Anyhow ,I installed some amazing games
- Urban Terror http://www.urbanterror.net/
- Open Arena http://www.openarena.ws/
- Tremulous http://www.tremulous.net/

These are based on the ioquake3 project http://ioquake3.org/
that is built upon id Software's Quake 3 source code release.
The source code was released on August 20, 2005 under the GPL.
Since then, they have been amazing things with it.

They all have Decent game play, graphics and good AI.
I have earlier bought Counter-strike and half life for 50$ and now these
amazing
quake mods are offering the same performance and gaming experience.

Anyhow,if anyone is into FPS gaming or is already playing these games,
is there a server
list in india where the pings would be a better?

If not,I have been toying with the idea of hosting a Urban Terror server
for some weekend fun. Will post the IP when it is up and running.

Happy shooting!

If not,I have been toying with the idea of hosting a Urban Terror server

Re: [ilugd] backing up large weekly data

2007-08-01 Thread Vikram Ranade
750 GB drives cost 11k each at Nehru Place.

we've just bought a bunch of them for storage.
Personally I recommend a HDD based software raid 5 array.
I have 2 such arrays at home totalling 2.5TB and they have been
working really well for the past 2 years.

We did something similar at work with several 1.5TB arrays for backups
using rsync scripts to pull backups 3 times a day from client machines.

If you want a really cool setup then check out backuppc
it is an automated snapshot style backup system that can work with rsync
to get really good performance (backup speeds).we've been planning to
migrate tho this from our current scripted backup system.it has a nice
web interface and pulls backups from the client machines on an individual
schedule.

2007-06-26 Thread Vikram Ranade
My Father and mother use Linux (FC6) on our home PC with no issues at all.
Infact they did not even feel a change from XP. They edit pictures,do
mail, internet.
I did not have to hand hold them at all.
On the other hand several of our managers at work complain endlessly
about how it
"used to work" in Windows.
It a perception based problem, not to do with functionality of either OS.

The only way to change this perception is to give training, support and
then do it all over again :-) .

Re: [ilugd] drive can be shared

2006-08-19 Thread vikram ranade
I assume you have Windows XP with the Drive E formatted with NTFS.
For NTFS support you will need to install the NTFS driver.
There is a guide for this here --->
http://www.linux-ntfs.org/content/view/127/63/

Incase the Drive E is formatted as FAT32 then you can mount the drive
natively
with the mount command into a directory of your choice.

Hope this helps.

[ilugd] FC5, wireless, NetworkManager issues - solved

2006-05-22 Thread vikram ranade
Hello all,
Just wanted to share an experience with a new FC5 installation that was
a little annoying.
I have a Compaq v4000 presario series notebook that worked flawlessly with
FC4.
After a clean install of FC5,I had a series of odd networking problems that
I
could not figure out.
The in-built Realtek 8139 100Mbit LAN card and the IPW2200BG card would
randomly get assigned as eth0 and eth1 with each reboot.
The created a mess with networking so that each reboot required me to delete
interfaces in system-config-network and make new interfaces that corretly
reflected
the new eth1 and eth0 assignments.
It seems that this is a fedora bug as outlined in this link
http://www.ces.clemson.edu/linux/nm.shtml
I messed around with init scripts to fix the problem without success untill
I found this link -
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/networkmanager-list/2006-March/msg00458.html

problems solved.

Hope this helps anyone who has dual netowkr cards and has faced a similar
problem.

Best regards,
Vikram Ranade

[ilugd] What reliance phone for rconnect?

2005-11-30 Thread vikram ranade
Hi all,
I wanted to buy a reliance handset for connecting to the internet on my
notebook.
Unfortunately my notebook does not have a serial port...only USB.

I know that the LG 2130 and 2030 were supported...but I have no clue of the
newer models are
supported.
Are there any specific (newer, easily available with origional USB cables)
handsets that you could recommend?

thanks,
Vikram

I already downloaded the gentoo 2005.1 universal CD and the 2005.1 packages
Cd so the sources download should be minimal (or am I mistaken?)
I plan to do the (easy) network-less install.
I did try and install Gentoo once (older release) and it took ages on a slow
PC even though i had a T1 net connection. The compile times were simply
crazy.
Will share what i manage to achieve ;-).

[ilugd] Linux friendly Digital camera

2005-09-26 Thread vikram ranade
Was curious if there are any digital camera's that work out of the box with
linux.
I wanted to get hold of a 2~5 Megapixel one for work and I need this to work

By working well i mean that i should be able to mount it as a regular USB
drive thru a USB connector cable to copy the pictures and movies off it.
Anybody had good experiences with a specific model or brand that would guide
me?

The 802.11b adapter is a wireless LAN card and an access point is the

Sudevji,
I assume that you are using ubuntu.I have ubuntu on my notebook and the
wireless card is configured as eth0

here is the contents of /etc/network/interfaces for reference

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /etc/network/interfaces
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# This is a list of hotpluggable network interfaces.
# They will be activated automatically by the hotplug subsystem.
mapping hotplug
 script grep
 map eth0

# The primary network interface
iface eth0 inet static
 # wireless-* options are implemented by the wireless-tools package
 wireless-mode managed
 wireless-essid xx
 address 192.168.2.xxx
 netmask 255.255.255.0 <http://255.255.255.0>

auto eth0
---
I hve configured my network from the gui
(System-->Administration-->Networking)
You will have to only specify a static IP address on each machine abd change
the
wireless-mode managed setting to wireless-mode adhoc

as long as the machines have an IP in the same range/subnet...they should be
able to "talk" to each other.Think of Ad-hoc as a wireless "cross-cable".
Ad-hoc is not ideal way to connect systems...as far as i know the speeds are
not the excellent and the number of systems that can connect is limited to 3
(in terms of concurrent connections.some sort of protocol
limitation). This may have changed in the 802.11g standard...I remember
messing with this in the older 802.11b cards and seeing this limitation.

Hope this helps.

[ilugd] Ubuntu CD from Freedel

2005-09-17 Thread vikram ranade
I just fired up the Ubuntu CD that was being distributed at the Freedel
event at PHDCCI today and it all seemed to be working great during the
install but then after the install was complete and I was anticipating a
nice shiney logon screen, I got a white screen
I figured...hey probably some xorg.conf messup.went into the console and
tried to login as root and then realized that while the setup had prompted
me to define a regular user profile.at no stage during the installation
process was I ever prompted for the root password!
so im stuck with a system with no Xand no way to edit xorg.conf
any clue what could have gone wrong?
Is there some default root passowrd that I need to know..?...or did i simpy
goof up somewhere and pressed enter twice? (blank root password does not
work so it could not have been something as simple as that).

Clueless..
Any help appreciated.
Thanks

Re: [ilugd] PDF Tools in Linux - (for Ubuntu)

2005-09-12 Thread vikram ranade
Apt or synaptic should get you the correct Acroread version.
Maybe the repository that you are downloading from is broken.
I use Acroread, xpdf and OpenOffice 1.13 for all my PDF needs.

Although to be honest I have not tried to merge various pdf documents
or manipulate PDf documents.
I mainly use Open Office to convert .doc and .xls files to pdf.

Re: [ilugd] Mouse Capture as flash

2005-03-28 Thread Vikram Ranade
Use vnc2swf
http://www.unixuser.org/~euske/vnc2swf/
It uses a vnc server output and converts it into an swf format. You can
also splice audio into it.
It is platform independent (in the sense it can capture every OS that
can run a vnc server).

[ilugd] Backup setups

2004-08-17 Thread Vikram Ranade
Hello,
I was just curious about the various data backup systems that are
available for companies that want to
keep large daily backups (400~500GB).

The most widely propagated is naturally Tape Backups. We currently use
DAT tapes that are painfully slow and
have a rather high TCO.
But I personally feel that they are rather expensive (the Sony AIT-4
Tape drive system with 200 GB Tapes
was quoted to me at Rs 2 Lakh) and do not provide enough redundancy
against failure.

Wouldn't it be better to have several (2~3) large (4X250GB with RAID 5)
independent IDE Linux Software Raid
setups on a network for backups?
This way the there would be no single point of failure and if one was to
locate the backup systems
at different locations at the site each with its own UPS backup, they
would provide sufficient redundancy
against hard-disk and other failures in any of the backup systems.
How would this sort of system compare against a conventional Tape Drive
setup?
The cost would definitely be lower than a Tape backup system in my
opinion.
What sort of backup systems are some of you running?
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Vikram

[ilugd] Re:using two vga adapters

2004-08-09 Thread Vikram Ranade
Multi-head displays are supported under X.
I have personally used matrox and nvidia cards in dual and triple
displays.
It all depends on the driver support for dual display. Both matrox and
nvidia support multi-head displays.
check out the nvidia site, they have a sample Xfree86config file that
demonstrates how to setup 2 separate
Graphic cards on the same machine.
I am no linux expert but it has something to do with defining which
PCI/AGP bus address is used by the respective cards.
Each card will run a desktop or you can even club the desktops together
to make a large desktop.
I have tried it with the Matrox G450 DH and a Matrox G400 PCI to get 3
monitor displays and on another occasion with a Gf4 Ti-4200 and a GF2 MX
PCI to get 3 displays.

Hope this helps,
Vikram

Just wondering how it is possible to make sure that only one instance
of a program runs per user under linux.
I am using Evolution for my mail and sometimes by false clicking ,two or

Is there some way to lock this?
I am running Evolution 1.4.4 under Genome 2.4 and Mandrake Linux 9.2
download edition
with the kernel 2.4.22. i686.

my favourite is http://forums.2cpu.com where i am fairly acitve..
it costs a bit...but ...its not a huge amount
i am willing to contribute towards it in terms of money and time
but hey lets have a poll on the site and let the numbers speak for
themselves.
its silly to argue about this in the mailing list.
if an overwhelming majority are in favour then lets do it..
otherwise lets drop the discussion completely (until next time ;)) since it
is a waste
of time to talk about it if everyone or atleast a large enuf percentage are
not interested...
The whole forum idea was just a suggestion .

[ilugd] Re: Possible additional feature for the list

2004-02-18 Thread vikram ranade
I think that a Forum is a great idea...much easier to navigate and reference
older threads to some of the common problems and questions.that are put
forward by members. I think that it is also a great way to increase the
exposure of DLUG to others and showcase us as an active groupany
outsider (like me when i first visited the site) that DLUG is not too
active...

The question is how can this be done...the first step could perhaps be to
setup a poll on the website and see how many people are in favour of the
forum.
if the outcome is favourable and we all decide that a forum is the way to go
then we could see how this could go forward (perhaps hosting it on a
seperate machine and including a link on the home pageI dont know the
costs involved but i would be happy to contribute cash for it)

If anyone has more ideas or suggestions regarding the proposallets hear
them :-D.

bashed, football hooligans crunch, and Miss Whip and Miss Lash ply their

us believe that suffering, whether useful or not, is a fit scourge to the
wanton soul.
