Dear all

After a long time of reading the mails shared on this list, I have finally
decide to go off the list.

When I found this Linux community in Delhi, I was so excited but I am very
sorry to say this that I found it really disheartening that the people who oat
to be Linux or community supportive can't even get rid of there personal egos.

There were numerous expectations in ma mind when I joined this list but all are
shattered. What I received in favour were an endless spam mails which are
anyhow useless.

I have been roaming around the forums and communities globally but I have never
noticed such arrogant and supremacy complex in any of the community.

I don't even know how you guys gonna take this mail but I would like to just
advise to everyone here that BEFORE YOU SAY THAT YOU SUPPORT OPEN SOURCE, GET
OFF YOUR EGO AND UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF THE WORD

COMMUNITY.

What I understood here is that most of persons here take Open Source as either
of the following:

1. Tools to show how superior they are.

2. They know what other don't.

3. Open Source gonna make them bond or hacker (more sophisticated word).

4. Short-cut to make big bucks.

5. Boasting off.

6. Argumentation for egos

7. and many other depending on individuals

Customizing somebody else's work does not mean at all that you support open
source. Its about contributing to that work. Modifying Drupal or Joomla (just
as examples) to build a website does not mean you contribute to open source
this only means that you are lookin for your own interest.

Its easy to list up all the work India did in past but did any body cared about
present. We don't even have a single Linux flavour which can represent us
globally.

Big bonds on this list (I don't to mention their names, I guess they are smart
enough to understand whom all I am referring) WAKE UP! you guys are not
supporting open source, you are making it stink. Many of you don't even
understand computer architecture. Some of them don't even understand what they
are speaking. And some think they define boundaries.

For all other guys who really working in the right direction, I would like to
wish them good luck and all the best to get there good work going. We will be
in touch for sure, may be somewhere else but this place really stink with the
smell of dirty egos.

It was all nice being here , now I would like to have your kind permission for
a GOOD BYE!!!

Thanks Regards

A list normally should be known for its content and not for the people who

Guys I am not leaving the list (because I think I am also responsible for

Dont you people realize you are being total hippocrites ?

At one end, you kick out a lurker who wants to reach out and contact
one-to-one with the group-- for sending a single off-topic message.

At the other end, you yourselves create traffic of 5-10 messages-- for
nothing ?

Personally I want to ask-- if connecting with like-minded people through
social networking sites is so bad, how come Barack Obama has a website and a
myspace page ?

Instead of revelling in such total groupism-- cursing the darkness- and then
looking for people to kick out-- you people should ask yourself if there's a
way to be more helpful to people who would otherwise be discouraged-- like
the guy in a US university-- who wanted to take classes in Delhi-- but who
was totally discouraged by the individual who in trying to show off his wit
and intelligence insisted on foisting himself upon him.

Mr.Gonsalves, do you realize how disgusting it is when you question some
youngster's chances of succeeding in life just because his english is a
certain way ?

You think you are being funny-- but how would you feel if someone made fun
of your children in a similar manner ? and that too a whole group of males ?

Having seen professionally-- the bad results such groupism brings upon
organizations-- I am sure this group would fare no differently.

This is not a social networking site. It is dedicated for the purpose
 of linux discussions.

If you want to reach out please send e-mails to personal mail ids.

 nothing ?

Personally I want to ask-- if connecting with like-minded people through

No one denies that they are bad what we say is that they have no place on
a FOSS mailing list.
If Barack Obama used this mailing list to canvas for votes it would
still be considered as spam .

Instead of revelling in such total groupism-- cursing the darkness- and

A mailing list has certain rules to follow and if you do not follow
those rules you can be kicked out.
It can not be termed as groupism.
On the other hand sending mails to a mailing list instead of sending it
to each individuals email id seperately is a sign of laziness of the
greatest order and should be condemned.

Mr.Gonsalves, do you realize how disgusting it is when you question some
youngster's chances of succeeding in life just because his english is a
 certain way ?

This has been discussed earlier and your chances of making some one
understand and replying to your email are much lower if the readers can not
understand your writing.
Not using the spell check feature is another sign of laziness and lazy
people are less likely to suceed in finding answers to thier questions than
people who go the extra mile.

You think you are being funny-- but how would you feel if someone made fun
of your children in a similar manner ? and that too a whole group of males
 ?

What does group of males or making fun of children have to do with the
point you are trying to make.
you think that all newbies are children who should be spoon fed like in a
school?

Having seen professionally-- the bad results such groupism brings upon
organizations-- I am sure this group would fare no differently.

Do you now realize how disgusting it is when you question ILUG-D's
chances of succeeding just because of the mails on its mailing list.

 [personal stuff snipped]

Priya, I believe you're looking at the function and the functioning of
this list in a slightly different way from what most people perceive it
to be.

To elaborate, this list is meant to discuss Linux, FOSS and related
issues. This includes technical issues, but the list also serves as a
vehicle for discussing larger social issues. Surprisingly (or perhaps
not so surprisingly), the list is also used to find like-minded people
and organise face to face meetings, etc.

On the other hand, no matter how tempting the social and meeting
opportunities may be, they must not be allowed to subsume the primary
function of the list (Linux, free software and related technologies).
Unfortunately, mass invites from (may I use the term?) idiots who think
nothing of giving their whole address book to a social networking site
are getting more common every day, and we've already been spammed by
various sites, inviting us to join in and participate in the fun.
Similarly, no matter how important it may be for the world to condemn
(say for the sake of argument) the Vadodra riots, the discussion of
that has no place on this mailing list. Which is not to say it must
not be discussed (or social networking sites must be deprecated), just
use an appropriate vehicle for the discussion.

I have nothing against social networking sites (well, I do, but that's
neither here nor there), but you would appreciate that there's a
difference between sending a PERSONAL invite to your friend inviting
him/her to join the site and a RANDOM invite to thousands of people
whom you've never met, and many of whom you're likely to never meet
(because, e.g. they live 7000 KM away from you). The former is quite
acceptable; the latter completely unacceptable.

Further, long-term users of the Internet have an ingrained reaction to
spam (unsolicited bulk mail), and the reaction is usually along the
lines of: Kill the spammer before s/he can send another mail to my
inbox. I personally spend about 1/3 my working day reading and
responding to e-mail. If I have to spend even an hour a day handling
spam, that means I lose 12.5% of my potentially productive time. Given
that, are you surprised if I (and people like me) try to ridicule,
belittle and insult spammers? Given the choice between getting more
work done and making more money, and being nice to (or even tolerating)
spammers, guess which one I'd choose?

Combine the above two, and you would start to get an understanding of
why the list explodes whenever someone commits the two cardinal sins:
(a) giving his/her personal details and addressbooks to a commercial
site and (b) helping a site spam a mailing list. The first harms the
user directly and all users of the Internet indirectly. The second
harms all of us who use e-mail as a tool for fun as well as business.
Perhaps the reactions are extreme, but at least they're understandable.
And the motives that you attribute to people aren't the real motives at
all.

P.S. Who's Barak Obama, and why should his Internet habits have any
impact on my world view?

Regards,

one-to-one with the group-- for sending a single
 off-topic message.

I don't think anyone's kicking out a lurker - there
are hundreds on this list. For a statement to have
been made so forcefully - have you even checked with
the person about why he's quitting?

Personally I want to ask-- if connecting with
 like-minded people through
social networking sites is so bad, how come Barack
Obama has a website and a
 myspace page ?

I don't get the reference here. Social networks are
meant for people to connect with each other based on
common interests - something a presidential hopeful
would like to tap on his bid to get elected. But how
does that even compare with a list where discussions
are mostly about solving problems within a community,
related to a particular topic?

Mailing lists have always had guidelines - some
unwritten, and people are expected to follow them.
Most times, they're enforced by list users rather than
an officious sounding moderator, who then needs to
step in only in the most extreme cases.

Instead of revelling in such total groupism--
 cursing the darkness- and then
looking for people to kick out-- you people should
 ask yourself if there's a
way to be more helpful to people who would otherwise
 be discouraged-- like
the guy in a US university-- who wanted to take
 classes in Delhi-- but who
was totally discouraged by the individual who in
trying to show off his wit
and intelligence insisted on foisting himself upon
 him.

Wow. Really, I'll have to hand it to you - you come
across thinking you're standing on a pedestal crying
out for common good, but you don't bother to check
facts? Not only do I think you interpreted that email
wrongly - which I believe was sent out in full honesty
- you came out in force *Against* it. Astounding.

 and that too
a whole group of males ?

Erk, approaching murky waters. Lets not go in there
shall we?

Having seen professionally-- the bad results such
 groupism brings upon
organizations-- I am sure this group would fare no
 differently.

Have you seen this group professionally then?
Interesting. And what are your conclusions on such
empirical analysis?

Gora ? if you are a 20-something youngster from some
 small town- then stop
being a frog who even after being released in the
 ocean tries to carry his
vision of his well with him-- in time you'll realize
 it's not healthy- and
believe me you, I am professionally qualified to
 judge what constitutes
 mental health and what doesnt.

Haha. As much as Gora would appreciate being mistaken
for a 20 year old, I really don't think making
assumptions and debasing statements about someone
you've obviously never met - is a good idea on a
public list.

Haven't you ever visited ilugd's website? Look @ left side, below the
events calender, there's a proper way to unsubscribe. rest apart,
dosn't rediffmail provides filters?

List admins, please put a notice that everyone gets during subscription,

unsubscribing, you would click on block mail or this is spam links on
webmail to stop mails from coming?

I am particularly pissed by this because it has burned me in the past. A
very prominent webmail provider had banned my mail server because one of
their subscribers decided to click on this is spam to stop mails coming
from a mailing list on my server. It took quite some effort to undo the
damage because we had to dig up proof that the subscriber had in fact
subscribed himself. And he was too lazy or irresponsible to go to the
mailing list address at the bottom of the mails to unsubscribe. We lost
mails for a number of days to that webmail provider before things weer
rectified.

So dont give this advice. You might end up banning ILUGD from that mail
server itself.

Hi

First thing first, never send emails without subject. This is bad manners.

As far as your problem is concerned you can visit the following link

http://rpmseek.com/rpm/caitoo-0.6.6-94.html?hl=comcs=caitoo:PN:0:0:0:0:1247165

On this page there is a link to all the above library files you have

2003-07-31 Thread Robins Tharakan
hi,

frankly your question is too vague...
quite like: i wish to fly... what should i take a glider or the
concorde...?

(although the comparisons are not corresponding to the ones you
stated..)
i'd rather say that you are asking the wrong question.
(traditional) unix systems are generally(!) for a server end... eg.
Solaris, Sco-unix... etc..
linux on the other hand is a variant of unix... but (also) tilted
towards the desktop side...

in short: if you wish to do learning, on the home front, i'd rather say
you need not think, and go straight for linux, especially if your
background in such systems is minimal...

for cds you could contact people on the list itself..
that has lots of docs to read. (after installation that is..)
or visit innumerable sites on the net e.g. www.tldp.org ,
www.linuxnewbie.org etc...

but again, your question is bit too vague for anyone to answer..
and generally (and this goes for most of the new learners) its adviced
that in a list like this (or any other such list) newbies are more than
welcome, but a little effort on their side is very very appreciated...

well: if you ask whether to take Air-India or Sahara from delhi to
timbuktu, i think you'd get a lot more answers..!!
in english what that means is that a simple unix vs linux or a simple
linux learn introduction on google helps quite a bit... atleast in the
initial decision making...

:-)

happy learning.

Since you yourself are pretty unsure about Unix/Linux
and what you want to do with it( you mentioned
certificates), I would suggest you pick up a Linux

tell you whether the book suits your requirement).
Such books normally come with some Linux distributions
on CD(s) and will be available under Rs. 500/-.

2003-07-07 Thread Ambar Roy
There has been messages sent to the members of this list from
[EMAIL PROTECTED] with the bugbear virus. Although I own and use the
royconsultants.com domain I don't use this email id. It was generated by the
virus.

And everyone, please stop your virus scanners from sending mails to the
sender of mails. Most of the newer viruses send messages from fake senders
and sending back virus in mail messages. My incoming mail server got
choked with around 20 such mails :( many even had the virus.

Ambar Roy
PS: I don't have bugbear or any other mail virus on my system.
