2008-08-30 Thread Saurabh Nanda
I would advise everyone to not buy any Acer notebook. Their build
quality sucks. And believe me, you might think that build quality does
not matter, but for notebooks it does -- you'll realize it later. The
mousepad of my Acer laptop[1] started misbehaving within 2 months of
purchase. Today, after 3 years of sparse usage (mostly lying around at
home) I find out that the keyboard has started misbehaving too.

Don't even get me started on the battery. Even when it was brand new,
I never got more than 1h 15m of battery backup.

Moral: DON'T buy Acer.

I don't have a netbook. I am using an Intel D945GCLF mobo. It ships
with an integrated Atom 230 (1.6GHz), single DDR2 DIMM (max. 2GB), on
board video and sound etc. I have a 2GB RAM config. You can get a
decent config. for under 6K if you assemble it yourself.

Loaded up Ubuntu 8.04.1 and openSUSE 11.0, all devices worked out of
box. Desktop performance was decent - I did not notice any
sluggishnes. IMO, for regular desktop usage (openoffice, browsing,
email) it is a good fit.

Have you tried booting any Linux LiveCD on this machine? Pls. share
your Linux experience i.e. WiFi, modem.

What is your experience with the speed? Reviews of Intel Atom seem very
poor. My concern was about how the computer would cope with multiple
applications running simultaneously. What may happen if one started a linux
distro and virtual box on it to run another OS?

The price in India is Rs 21000 for the linux model which is indeed very
attractive.

I have had mine for about 10 days. Overall I like the machine for my purposes.
The battery lasts about 2 1/2 hours, the screen is awesome, not a bit of
problems connecting with the internet. I also have used my Verizon modem on the
machine and it works just fine. I use Outlook 2003 and Open Office on it
without any problems.

Except for the battery life, I really like the machine. Since the price for
this model has dropped to $349 I think it is a steal.

[ilugd] Any experiences with Acer Aspire One?

2008-08-27 Thread Vikas Rawal
Acer has recently introduced in India a sub-notebook pre-loaded with Linux
(a fedora-based distribution called Linpus lite). The machine runs on an
Intel Atom processor, has 1 gig RAM, 120 GB HDD and an 8.9" screen.

I am considering picking up a piece but would be interested if anyone has
any experience to share. Or any feedback on Intel Atom processors?

The reviews of Intel Atom processors on the internet show very poor
processing performance though they do well in terms of power consumption.
Any comments?

Best,
