From: Swapnil Bhartiya [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dell will be certainly better than any eePC. Isn't that a really shameful plug for Dell? I still remember the days when the troika of Sony, Toshiba and Dell sold ultra-portables for rs 100,000 and above. The success of the EeePC netbooks has prompted everyone else to jump on to the bandwagon. Hence we have Dell, HP, Lenovo all announcing affordable netbooks. I have one, as for the UI, Xandros has done a great job in customizing KDE for this unit. The other option is to install the eeePC Ubuntu and the Ubuntu MID packages. For the non geek user I would say stick with what comes installed. It does have an update feature and I was able to update newer versions of the packages - the average gadget savvy user should be able use the update UI. A couple of days ago I saw it discounted for Rs. 14.5K at a Lamington Road store in Mumbai. it's wi-fi is quite impressive, good at catching weak signals, which other wi-fi devices could not catch in the same vicinity. am considering buying one for myself, for just regular netbooking. what do you say? Have not experimented with the wi-fi yet. From what I have seen the WiFi UI does not have the capability to configure WPA/WPA2 settings - I could have missed it though. As more players enter the prices of the 2nd gen. models are likely to come down. ASUS started with 31.5K (incl. mandatory WinXP tax). Hi, Have not experimented with the wi-fi yet. From what I have seen the WiFi UI does not have the capability to configure WPA/WPA2 settings - I could have missed it though. I have an Asus Eeepc 701. Upgraded RAM to 1GB, added a 4 GB SDHC card. Took out Xandros, installed Ubuntu via USB Stick. Tested Gnome, KDE, Ubuntu Netbook Remix UIs. Everything works, including Wi-Fi with WEP, WPA, WPA2; Skype video etc etc. Am going to get me a 901; Intel Atom Processor, 802.11n, Bluetooth, 9 screen. Available for around 22.5K at Tradelink in Nehru Place. Re: [ilugd] asus eeepc 4gb with linux spotted in delhi
Any feedback whether such devices can be of use for Enterprises? The marketing teams are advising against use of such products for Enterprises. I can't understand why - at least for guys using it for presentations, email, light word processing / spreadsheets and Browser based applications. I think the reason lies in the fact that Enterprise use is interpreted as Windows XP Professional Edition which can integrate and authenticate with Active Directory. The vendors are only providing Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, and which due to Microsoft Policy, is engineered not to be able to authenticate against Active Directory. So why not make Linux on such devices authenticate against Active Directory? Or for that matter we can probably use rdesktop for RDP connection to Enterprise Resources. And can these devices be made to boot from Network and a USB Device?? Probably these machines can also be used as Thin Clients. Any one tried a dual boot?? No wonder some reviews talk of them as Netbooks or some times client devices for Cloud Computing!! anand ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/
