Might I suggest using the cluster for something more mundane. A few uses
from top of my head

- Compressing a 3 gb file using bzip2

- Resizing 500 tiffs and converting them to jpegs with ImageMagick

- Compiling Apache or any other project with a big code base.

- If we can have a game of quake2/doom that would be the best use a
cluster can be put to ;-)

Hi all,

Two area(s) we can use the cluster for:

1. [EMAIL PROTECTED], The Search for ET Intelligence, from
UCB.there's a Linux version of there software
availible for download. We'll have to integrate it with
the ISO's.

2. Mersenne Prime Number search.
They too have a linux download.

We could go further into Genomics, Seismic data
analysis, Web searches, Meteorological data analysis,
Crash test data analysis.. we could go on this way.

With the first two we have easily availible software
and almost no requirements of specialized data sets,
unlike the ones mentioned later.

Also if we're looking for publicity, Prime search has

Well if you can recall what you read you are a help
to us. Do show up fro the informal meeting this
weekend and be part of it.
see the major resource for this proect is you,
yourself. We will need lot of ppl to turn up with
their PC's if their systems meet the minimum
requirements we will be posting once we decide them.

YU DONT'T NEED TO HAVE CLUSTERING KNOWLEDGE TO
BE PART OF THIS PROJECT . All you need is the
drive.

Certainly a brainstorming session is required, and
thats why i am asking all the volunteers to meet. We
have to have a meeting this weekend to get the ball
rolling. I belive delhi haat will be asuitable place
to meet and discuss the course of action. We can meet
this Saturday or sunday (you guyz choose it).
As for the volunteers not having network boot option
i will recomend using cdrom boot instead of network
boot.

Guyz hurry up and decide the time and day for the
meeting.

a brainstorming session is required before the event.
lets plan asap.

also, i would suggest to use
1. standard linux distro with good mpi library (i am fond of lam) with
network boot
2. a bootable cd with preconfigured settings

but then i am not very sure how many machine volunteers bring will have
network boot option?
lets start making a small inventory for this.

yabba dabba dooo! another volunteer!
keep counting, guys. so its final. this event is happening.
should we set up a separate forum / discussion on the website for this,
or continue with this on the regular mailing list? given that this is
just a one-month or two-month thing, i'd recommend we continue
discussing this on this mailing list, under this thread. this way,
everyone knows what's happening and more momentum can be built.

yeah! that's our tenth volunteer for this project. way to go. looks like
this is happening. anindya, since you work at pcqlabs, is it possible we
set this up supercluster up at PCQlabs/cmil. they have all the necessary
infrastructure to do this. and this kind of a closer interaction with
the linux community would also be refreshing and synergetic.

okay, i do know that a certain ajay kumar is a lecturer or a prof. of
maths at st. stephens. he migrated to delhi last year from the top
college in mumbai. he is a TeX dude, and understands linux reasonably
well. also understands and appreciates mathematics software. with that
background, i suppose he would be the ideal guy to mentor, suggest
supercomputing challenges from academia, and basically do something. i
have lost his contact details. am sure there are people on this list
from st. stephen's or have friends who study at st stephens, or
something. please could you get in touch with him, and ask him to come
online on this mailing list. he could coordinate and see this project
thru for us.

You can start downloading clusterknoppix, if you have
good download speed. Contact the llst after you have
done so, we can decide on the number of copies to be

This is a pretty good idea. I had worked a bit on
clusters, and i am volunteering for the event. But
before we go ahead with it a lot of planing has to be
done.
The first thing we have to decide is location.
Location needs to have a good cooling system, power
line needs to industrial type (indian standard) as the
cluster will eat up lot of power (We might need the
location for the whole weekend).
Secondly we have to decide the size and what we have
to do with the supercomputer. This involves some
maths, and i will need a volunteer to help me out in
all the calculations (basically cross check my
calculations).
Third the type of network, this again will be
dependednt on the size of supercomputer and the
processes running on the big box.

Once we decide on these, we can go ahead with few
minor things. We have to decide on the date of event
and start workin for this a month in advance.

2004-04-03 Thread linuxlingam
just read the faq on flashmobcomputing.

http://www.flashmobcomputing.org/misc/faq

in 1998, in germany the fire department blew snowy-cold air into the
room to keep the computers cool! yeouch!

that means, we need a building with enough pre-existing computers, loads
of spare plugs, and good power supply to take the load. it also depends
on how big our cluster is.

for instance, even if we do this with say, 50 to 100 pcs from volunteers
from ilug-d, it is worth it, and a moment in history.
the newspapers and press will cover it.

i also wonder how it will benchmark against india's existing
supercomputers.

:-)
LL

ps: i mentioned i have no knowhow about clusters etc, but wish to
explore this. also, they are doing this with knoppix, as i had guessed
in my previous email. so even windoze users can bring their pcs, network
them, and run a live boot cd of clusterknoppix to create a
supercomputer.

translation: no techie knowledge required for participants and
volunteers. just bring pc. though we would need one or two guys who
handle the logistics and supercomputing benchmarking, etc.

tomorrow to this.

er.. how to run the world's fastest screensaver. :-)
i don't know. we need someone from academia and research or maths to
figure this out. probably a gene, some molecular structures,
mathematical brute-forcing

they also have tools to benchmark whether the supercomputer gets into
the world's top 500.

what i really like is that
1)they have a LAN party at the end of it.
2) you could even bring a non-linux pc. they'll run this thru a bootable
cd. how cool!
3) everyone gets a sticker/decal of participation.
4)everyone gets a teeshirt they took part in this event.

you know, i get the feeling at ilug-delhi, we *could* break the world
record to even become the fastest supercomputer cluster in the world,
but i bet tarun dua's tee-shirts for the flashmobcomputing event of
ilug-d would be in by the end of this decade.

Linux creates first ad-hoc, temporary supercomputer
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=04/04/02/184238

Linux will be used to create a giant, temporary supercomputer from
normal PCs brought by volunteers to an event tomorrow in San
Francisco
billed as the first of its kind. "FlashMob" will showcase technology
enabling ordinary people with standard PCs to create a supercomputer
in
a matter of hours. The FlashMob event is sponsored by Foundry
Networks,
Myricom, and HP.

***

HP-lurkers on the list could help and sponsor, too.
