The problem has been fixed on Mac OS X, try a devel version
(GranParasido 3.0a8 [1]). FF 3 uses the ATSUI backend on the Mac, which
gives you pretty much the same rendering as Safari.

Now I am getting a bit confused here. Ajay wrote about checking for ie
whether the --enable-pango flag exists or not. Not checking it ie
enabling it. I have no doubts that Konqueror is a fine browser capable
of handling Indic display/rendering and printing. However, that is
precisely not the point. In the last 2 cases where I have read (either
on mailing list or IRC) about Firefox b0rking on Indic, screenshots are
in place to show that given a particular base OS and a particular
Firefox release, Indic rendering does work (and these days as does Indic
printing). What could be well served if out of all this Konqueror is
best, Firefox drags a** mail a framework of some sort arises which is
relevant to test cases that can prove whether the particular website
when viewed using Firefox provides a functionally complete viewing
experience. That might turn out to be more than helpful given that the
Firefox roadmap is perhaps aimed at a Cairo integration too (from
existing Pango).

If it is a distribution specific issue, you are practised enough to file
a distribution bug along side filing one upstream. Additionally, there
is a Mozilla Project Day at foss.in/2007 - do raise these issues there
ie if you still want to see Firefox as a browser comparable to if not
better than Konqueror.

it is not distro specific - I have seen the same problem in firefox

no doubt that FF can render properly - I remember some years back
spending about 2 weeks getting the latest pango on my desktop - which
meant upgrading practically everything and then compiling firefox
with pango support and getting it to rend the fonts. I find in etch,
fc6 and above and in ubuntu 7.x, it renders ok by default.
Interesting to see if doze version does the rendering by default.
Anyway, now I automatically use konq for indic rendering, so I have
no problem.

Please stop spreading rumours without having checked it for
yourself. konqueror is a fine browser, but Firefox, with Pango
enabled, works. If you really think that there are problems,
did you bother to file a bug report with the distribution in
question?

To the best of my knowledge, Firefox is Pango-enabled on most
new versions of the major Linux distributions, and works just
fine with Indian languages, as Sankarshan for one has pointed
out.

The original poster's problem seem to have been unfounded
(from what I could gather from his follow-up messages, he
seems to have been trying Firefox on Windows by mistake).
If it was a problem on Linux, the most likely culprit would
be fontconfig problems, which should be blamed on the
distribution, and not Firefox.

Gora

wonderful - so after 3 years or so, firefox guys are uninterested in
the second largest country in the world. How come Konqueror manages it?
Aren't we being a little hard on them? If I were to interpret what
firefox developers might be saying (completely my words), it would go
something like this:

We have checked the code into firefox to enable complex text layout
necessary for some non latin scripts including many from indic, arabic,
south east asian, and arabic languages. For anyone distributing firefox
for these languages, please compile with the options required to enable
CTL. We are not enabling it by default for everyone, because the
performance penalty for the rest of the users does not justify the gains
as most indic (or other such language) speakers browse the web in
english. (More so, they generate most of their web content in english,
and use english language skills as a differentiator to show/feel that
they are educated and high class.)

After that it is the responsibility of the indian foss community and
other government agencies to make sure that ctl builds are available.
For instance ubuntu and many other distributions' firefox build is by
default ctl enabled, and all one needs to do is set the environment
variable.

I have personally never had problems with firefox w.r.t. indic. So, feel
a little bad if the good folks at firefox get bad PR due to
misunderstanding.

If someone feels that it is not enough, they should find the firefox /
ubuntu / redhat / your favorite distribution forums and make a case as
they deem appropriate. I'd be happy to contribute to any discussion
regarding enabling ctl by default in firefox.

Cheers,
Ajay
