Looking to do this over a network as i don't have an external drive. Yes, Carbon Copy Cloner does exactly what you want. I recommend CCC as well. It's perfect. OTOH, I seem to remember there's some caveats when cloning a drive over a network (maybe they were solved in recent versions, but I remember I had some trouble a couple of years ago). When using Firewire Target mode, instead, CCC runs flawlessly. If you have a suitable Firewire cable to connect the two Macs, I recommend using this way instead of a network (it's faster as well). -- You received this message because you are a member of the iMac Group, a group for those using Apple iMacs and eMacs. core duo imac project
I've had a 20-inch core duo imac for nearly 2 years. Bought off ebay this has been my only machine for most of this time. Since i got it i have had video and or overheating issues. Only now that i have replaced it as my main machine do i feel confident enough to try to fix it. After being on for awhile i get random horizontal lines and partial lines, video artifacts, program crashes, frozen screens necessitating hard reboots. The more i tax the system the quicker and worse the problems develop. Speeding up the fans with SMC Fan Control helped a little, as did leaving it just in front of a window ac. Even so, these fixes were minimal. Things that have been suggested to me as the problem range from perhaps a loose connection to a failing motherboard. If possible i would like to fix this thing, and figure i may as well try to upgrade it if going that route. So, my questions are these... -from these symptoms, what should i try to replace first? -can i get a core 2 duo board and processor from a 20-inch that would fit into this core duo chasis? -would that combo likely solve the problem, or must i consider changing the screen as well (color seems good with only a handful of bad pixels). -would this be a doable project overall, or be too costly to bother? -is there any way this could be a harddrive-related issue? I ask that because another alternative is to replace the smaller and noisier hd on my newer core 2 duo with the one in my original machine. Thanks for your suggestions! -bill -- You received this message because you are a member of the iMac Group, a group for those using Apple iMacs and eMacs. upgrade to Lion?
Now that i have a core2duo imac i am considering updating the OS from Snow Leopard to Lion. I am wondering what others who have done this think, and was the move worth it? Also, the Lion update seems to have been removed from the Apple site when ML came out. Can one still buy it as a download? Or a usb flash drive? -bill -- You received this message because you are a member of the iMac Group, a group for those using Apple iMacs and eMacs. (model year, CPU speed, Ram quantity, graphic card, OS version...) IMO, every time we talk about problems (especially hardware ones), we should first state our computer configuration - it gives a much better context for understanding what's going on. First thing off the top of my head, is the graphic card. I read several iMacs (usually the ones with more powerful cards) suffered from issues like freezes, crashes, screen artifacts. Then, overheating: - can an iMac get dust inside? If yes, accumulated dust could impede cooling; - maybe the CPU (or something else, like the GPU) lost contact with its cooler; in this case, cleaning it and re-applying thermal paste is usually enough. Lastly, I think the screen has nothing to do with your problem. It sounds like overheating, most likely. -- You received this message because you are a member of the iMac Group, a group for those using Apple iMacs and eMacs. The one change i would like to make is my user name. Is there a way i can do this before, during, or after the install? After the install you can use Migration assistant with one VERY IMPORTANT caveat: you cannot migrate a user from the old disk that has the same name as a user on the new one. So don't set up the new OS, then create the account 'bill' and then try to migrate 'bill' from the old one. Migrating before is not possible, since the disk is unformatted. Really, doing it while the OS is being set up is the most painless way to go about it. Don't over-think this, it's a bit of 'it just works' technology. -- Bruce Johnson University of Arizona College of Pharmacy Information Technology Group Institutions do not have opinions, merely customs -- You received this message because you are a member of the iMac Group, a group for those using Apple iMacs and eMacs.
