Re: External backup drive recommendations

2021-02-25 Thread Eric Volker
I know I’m late to this party but I felt obliged to respond to the above
recommendations for Seagate. Some of you may be familiar with Louis
Rossman. He is famous for doing board level repairs for Macs on YouTube,
and also for criticizing Apple’s tendency to make newer devices
unrepairable.

Another lesser known aspect of his business is drive recovery. Here he
explains why he frequently has to repair Seagate drives:

I can confirm that I had a bad GPU heat pipe in my 24” 2007 iMac. The GPU would
regularly hit 100ºC when doing anything remotely stressful. Rather than fix
it, I compensated by using Macs Fan Control. It didn’t fix the problem, but got
enough air flow going inside the chassis to keep the GPU from melting into a
puddle.

The iMac eventually died from a bad PSU. RIP.

Dead 24" 2007 iMac - power supply?

2016-11-16 Thread Eric Volker
Well my ancient iMac may have finally bit the dust. I had put it away
for a couple of weeks, and when I tried to plug in the power cable, it
made several clicking noises then stopped. Since then it's been
completely dead, no startup chime, no more clicking noises, nothing. It
seems to me the most likely culprit is the power supply. Is this a sound
diagnosis?

Given the cost of iMac power supplies on eBay, it's probably not worth
the cost of resurrecting it. If that is indeed the problem, I'll
probably salvage the hard drive (2TB) and trash or donate the rest.

Thanks,

Eric

Re: Printer recommendations?

2016-09-29 Thread Eric Volker
I’m going to agree with Bruce on this one. We’ve had a Brother HL-2270DW for a
few years now, and it’s never let us down. It was a little finicky getting the
wireless set up, but once setup it’s an absolute snap to add to a Mac. And the
driver support is still there in El Capitan.

Re: SSD over Firewire 800/400

2016-06-02 Thread Eric Volker
I just wanted to make a final report on this experiment, in case anyone else
wants to try it. I bought a refurbished 500GB G-Technology G-Drive (with
Firewire 800 and USB 3.0) on eBay for $40. I then replaced the 500GB mechanical
drive with my 256GB SSD. I’ll probably put the HDD in my PC laptop.

The El Capitan install I had performed while the SSD was in the Iomega
enclosure was unreadable, so I had to reinstall the OS. Fortunately, that went
smoothly.

Performance isn’t quite where I hoped it would be. The transfer rate is about
60MB/s, where I was hoping for 70+ MB/s. Boot time is only slightly faster.
However, the iMac is much more responsive, and I only see the beachball once in
a blue moon. Xcode launches in 6 seconds instead of 20 seconds. So I’ll chalk
it up as a success.

Thanks for the assistance and success reports.

Eric

Re: SSD over Firewire 800/400

2016-05-25 Thread Eric Volker
J.C.-

I found confirmation online that these Iomega Mac Companion drives will not
boot over Firewire, just USB. It boots great off USB, so it’s not a problem
with the system folder being blessed. Isn’t that from the MacOS 8/9 days? I
haven’t blessed a folder in an eternity…

I think I’m going to try a G-Technology G-Drive and replace the built-in drive
with my SSD. The Amazon reviews seem to confirm that the drives are bootable
over Firewire 800. Has anyone here ever used one of those drives and booted it
from Firewire?

Thanks,

Re: SSD over Firewire 800/400

2016-05-19 Thread Eric Volker
Yes, I see those negative reviews now. I used to have an Iomega MiniMax
sometime in the distant past, and it booted fine off Firewire, so I assumed
it’s successor would do the same. I’m still doing some research into possible
solutions, but so far haven’t come up with anything other than resetting the
SMC and PRAM. I’ve also installed El Capitan twice to the disk, and neither
time would it boot. Does El Capitan support Firewire booting? If anyone has
any other ideas, I’d be grateful for suggestions.

Thing is, it actually feels pretty snappy even over USB 2.0. Boot time isn’t
that much better, but once the desktop loads programs pop up in a fraction of
the time that the did off the internal drive. It’s not mind-blowing, but it is
a significant difference.

Returning it probably wouldn’t be worth it. I paid $14 + shipping for the
enclosure, and I’d be liable for return shipping. So it’s probably not worth
the effort to get $7 back.

Thanks,

Eric

Re: SSD over Firewire 800/400

2016-05-18 Thread Eric Volker
Well I got the enclosure, but things didn’t go as planned. I got a deal on an
enclosure that had once been an Iomega Mac Companion. I installed the SSD,
hooked the enclosure up to my Firewire 800 port and it showed up on the
desktop. I installed El Capitan and rebooted, but when the Mac rebooted it came
up from the internal drive not the external one. Holding down Option while
booting showed only the internal drive. The Firewire drive is visible in the
Startup Disk preference panel, but selecting it accomplishes nothing. Rebooting
it just comes up on the internal drive.

Now for the fun part. It *will* boot if I hook up the drive via USB 2.0.
However, that’s pretty slow and I got this enclosure for the faster Firewire
800 port. Another curiosity is that the disk shows up as “External RAID Media”
in Disk Utility. It is assuredly not RAID, just a single 256GB SSD. Could this
be the problem?

I’m in the process of testing the SSD over USB, but results so far are mixed.
Any thoughts on getting Firewire working?

Thanks,

Eric

Re: Extending the life of an old iMac - Overheating, Windows, etc.

2016-01-30 Thread Eric Volker
>From what I understand of the yellowing process, it’s caused by heat from
the backlights somehow ‘burning’ stripes into the lcd. Simply swapping out
the backlights probably wouldn’t fix it; is replacing the entire LCD
assembly relatively easy? I seem to recall it coming out fairly easily when
I replaced the hard drive. However, they’re not cheap; I seem to recall
prices around $125 on eBay.

As far as the heat pipe is concerned, how hard it is it to find an
appropriate thermal pad? I was hoping I could do it with paste, but it
seems that's out. I may just go ahead and run the CPU fan into the ground
with my fan control software. I found out that there's a Windows version
that runs under BootCamp, making that decision easier.

Bootcamp is preferred because I would like to run some older games on the
nice big screen without the OS X performance penalty. Fortunately, the
yellow stripes are really only visible on solid, light backgrounds and
don't really affect gaming visuals. I've actually managed to get some
recent OS X titles to run on this old beast, like Divinity: Original Sin
and XCom.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Extending the life of an old iMac - Overheating, Windows, etc.

2016-01-27 Thread Eric Volker
I’m actually pretty lucky as far as longevity goes. My old mid-2007 iMac
will still run the latest OS, making it among the oldest devices to do so.
Even so, it has a few problems.

Chief among them is what I think is a bad heat pipe on the GPU - it rapidly
overheats if I play any 3d games. I had already blown out the dust, and it
still overheated. I contacted a local Mac shop and they said the repair was
impossible - the logic board would have to be replaced. I rather doubt
this, but don’t have any way to confirm it. Has anyone out there replaced
their heat pipe in their iMac? I’ve replaced the hard drive in my iMac, but
it was pretty hairy. Can an end-user replace the GPU heatpipe? In the
meantime, I’ve got some fan control software helping keep the Mac cool, but
it’s putting a lot of wear and tear on the CPU fan.

My second question relates to Boot Camp and Windows. The logical version to
install would be Windows 7, but only 32-bit OS’s are supported on this
iMac. Where on earth would I find a 32-bit version of Windows 7?

My third question relates to the screen. It’s gotten these subtle
horizontal yellow streaks on the screen that from what I’ve read are from
the CCFL backlights. Is there any way to get rid of them without replacing
the screen?

Thanks,

Eric

Re: Video Card for an I mac Late 2009

2015-07-29 Thread Eric Volker
I have a mid-2007 24 iMac and have pondered some of these questions
myself. 10.9 and 10.10 were poor choices for my machine, since they push
the graphics card too hard and cause it to overheat UNLESS I run a fan
control program to speed up the system fans. (This may also be due to a
faulty heat pipe in the Mac.) From what I have read, you are stuck with
Mac-specific MXM cards unless you hack the GPU BIOS or the driver/kext.
Hacking the driver is probably the easiest, but if something happens to
your OS you may be stuck without the ability to boot in safe mode.

However, making your Mac faster may be easier than that. Upgrading your
RAM should help, but since you don't seem afraid of opening up your Mac
an SSD would drastically improve your Mac's responsiveness. You might
also be able to get a good boost by attaching a Firewire 800 SSD drive
and booting off of that, though I personally haven't tried that approach.

Upgrading the CPU may be possible, but I think an upgrade to a quad may
be impossible, since I don't think the iMac ever supported the Core 2
Quad. Plus the quad generates a lot more heat than a C2D. See here for
more info:

Weird mouse problem

2013-08-10 Thread Eric Volker
I have a mid-2007 aluminum 24 Intel iMac with Mountain Lion loaded. One
day it simply refused to recognize the USB mouse or keyboard. A reboot
fixed the keyboard problem (currently using Mouse Keys), but the mouse
remained unresponsive. Upon further investigation, I found that no USB
mouse would work in any port, on the back of the iMac or in the keyboard.
The red LED on the bottom of the mouse comes on, but the pointer will not
move, nor will any clicks register. The keyboard seems to work regardless
of which port it's plugged into. It is also constantly prompting to install
a Bluetooth mouse. There are some pending updates which we can't install
because Mouse Keys doesn't seem to function on the update install screen.

This is one of the strangest Mac problems I've run into. I've tried
resetting PRAM, but that didn't do any good. Is there anything else I
should try? Will a Bluetooth mouse actually work?

Thanks,

Eric

Re: Weird mouse problem

2013-08-10 Thread Eric Volker
Never mind, 5 minutes after I posted this I found a solution. Well, a
partial solution anyway. I had been trying a number of Logitech and
Microsoft mice with the Mac and none of them would work. Finally, I decided
to try a Genuine Apple(tm) Mouse - and it worked. I guess the M$ mouse
driver on the Mac got corrupted and was interfering with any non-Apple
mouse. Just a guess though...it's been a very strange couple of days.

Thanks anyway,

Eric

Re: Replacing the HD

Sorry for my late response. I'll try to answer as best I can, based on
my experience upgrading my 2007 iMac.

Is this replacement something I can do myself or would it be better to pay
someone to do so? The ifixit site has a guide but it's marked as moderate
for difficulty, so I'm glad to hear other opinions on the task.

It's not for the faint of heart. I think you have a white iMac, which
I understand is at least a little easier. That said, replacing the
hard drive in my Aluminum mid-2007 model was a pain. It was well worth
it for my fiancee though - she jumped from a 320GB drive to a 2TB
drive.

The drive type is 160 GB 7200 rpm Serial ATA drive...so will any drive with
these specs work? Or are there other constraints I need to consider,
e.g. specified as Mac-compatible? (I'd like to at
least double the capacity if my pretty limited budget can stand it.)

Pretty much any SATA 3.5 inch drive will work (see my 2TB drive above.)

Are there manufacturers I should seek our or avoid? I've always heard good
things about Seagate and Western Digital but beyond that I'm in the dark.

You'll hear surprisingly varying responses from users. I've used
mainly Seagate and Western Digital drives, and have had some of each
brand fail. I've never had a Toshiba or Fujitsu fail, but I've only
used a couple of those. Seagate had some issues with 1.5TB drives I
believe, but that was a while back. Best advice is to buy from a site
that has reviews and will accept returns. Stick with a drive that has
4- or 5- star reviews from lots of people.

About what might I expect to have to pay if I have someone else do the
 installation?

Can't speak to this. I imagine it would be expensive.

Anything else I should keep in mind?

Some of the screws in the iMac are extraordinarily tiny. Keep a
magnetic screwdriver or someone with small hands around (my fiancee
was very handy.)

As always my thanks in advance!

Reassembled 24 iMac, Minor Problem

2011-09-16 Thread Eric Volker
After experiencing numerous overheating problems with my 24 iMac, I
went ahead and disassembled it and blew all the dust out. While I was
in there, I upgraded to a 2TB hard drive. I put it back together, and
everything seems to be working properly. Well, except for one minor
problem. There appears to be a very narrow strip of cloth blocking the
RAM slot screw. I don't know where it came from or how to get rid of
it/move it out of the way. I really don't want to fully disassemble
the thing just to get get the RAM cover back on. Can I get rid of it
with a few strategic cuts of a razor blade? Has anyone else who has
disassembled an iMac seen this before?

Thanks...

Re: New iMac

2011-08-21 Thread Eric Volker
If I'm reading this correctly, iMac refurbs from the Apple store are
still coming with 10.6 installed. See below:

http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC508LL/A?mco=MTkwMjE2MzY

They expire quick, so the ad might be gone already. Still, I'd check
the refurb section and see if you can get a deal on 10.6 iMac.

RE: Compatibility JVC Averio Video Camera HD Mac

2010-09-07 Thread Eric Volker
According to a quick Google search, the JVC Everio saves files in a
non-standard format that uses a .MOD extension. Here I'm assuming that you
can connect to the camera OK, but are seeing your videos saved as .MOD
files. Preliminary research seems to indicate that if you simply rename the
file from whatever.MOD to whatever.MPG, you should be able to open it in
Quicktime. Let us know if you have any problems renaming the file.

Re: September 2006 iMac Core 2 Duo model RAM: 3GB or 4GB?

2010-08-18 Thread Eric Volker
There may be some basis in factfor this claim. IIRC , two identical
ram modules can operate in dual channel mode. So though you would
still only have 3gb ofaddressable ram, access times mightbe faster.
This can provide a big boost in synthetic benchmarks, but rarely have
I seen a significant improvement in real world performance.
