iMac G3 Bondi - Voodoo 2 card in mezzanine slot

2014-09-08 Thread jonathan . politi . law
Hi group.
I came across an old iMac G3 Bondi Blue with what looks like the old Voodoo
2 video card installed in the mezzanine slot. The computer boots and then
locks up in some version of Linux. My plan is to reformat the drive and
install OS 9 10 as a dual boot. I'd like to take advantage of the video
card upgrade but I don't know if it will be recognized or if there are
drivers that need to be installed (and if so where I can find them). A
search of the internet hasn't yielded any good results. Was hoping there
was someone here who could point me in a direction.
Thanks. Jon.

Apple TV

2011-10-09 Thread Jonathan Rowson
I've had a thought, and was wondering if it was possible, or even needed. If
I were traveling with my Apple TV 2 (for the sake of this question), and I
wanted to connect to my home network from outside the home to watch stuff
from my iTunes, would that be possible? I know I can tunnel back to my mac,
but say I just wanted to watch something on a larger screen and was
traveling light (sans laptop), any thoughts on whether this is possible?

Re: Stupid question #216

2011-01-21 Thread Jonathan Smith
Just to add, Sonnet also offered the EG4-1000-1M-U 1GHz as well as the
EG4-500-1M
500 MHz for the blue and white G3.

However, they have both been discontinued. I wouldn't say they were cheap or
easy to find, unfortunately. I found only one Sonnet on ebay, a 466 and it's
£150.

There are some third party sellers, but in my experience, when they say
10-15 days lead time, it means, we will check with the manufacturer because
we don't stock them.

However, as Felix mentions, the PowerLogix PowerForce G3 ZIF cpu is
currently available and its $109.99.

Re: Anyone else with an eMac 800mhz? Need advice on a current upgrading...

2011-01-07 Thread Jonathan Smith
Hi

Yes, officially 10.4 tiger is your limit, but it is possible to run 10.5 on
the 800mhz. I don't have one, so I can only guess that you will find it to
be sluggish.

The additional 512mb of ram will certainly help or indeed make it possible,
if you decide to run leopard.

Regarding usb. Usb is not upgradable itself. for example, you cannot put a
usb 2 hub into a usb 1 and expect 2. It just doesn't work like that.

You would need a pci card with usb 2 connections, however, you cant use a
pci card on your emac.

The best you can do, unfortunately, is buy another emac, October 2003
onwards, with either the 1.0 or 1.25 GHz cpu.

Mactracker will detail which models come with usb2...

http://www.mactracker.ca/

As far as upgrading your processor is concerned, I don't know. I do know
that apple restricts its hardware in current imacs, so that not just any cpu
can be used. Socket comparability alone is not a guarantee with apple
hardware.

If any were to work, it would most logically be the 1 GHz PowerPC G4 (7445)
cpu that was available at the same time as your 800MHz.

Hope this helps

RAM upgrade for intel

2010-10-28 Thread Jonathan
Hi chaps

I am pondering an upgrade of my mid 2010 27 i5. It has the standard
4gb (2X2) ddr3 1333 sodimm.

I need to be certain of whether I am restricted by dual channelling.
Do I need to buy in pairs? Or can I leave my 2X2gb and add a single
4gb stick?

Cheers

If it does work, I can forget about dual channelling, and so, really,
what's the point. At best, the existing 2x2 may work in asymmetrical
 dual channel mode.

To further your question, the determining factor is chipset and not
processor. At least, that is my understanding.

 Jonathan,

For movies in any format to show up in Front Row, just place them in

For iTunes, though, they must be in an iTunes compatible format

click on them and choose iTunes to play them --they will be
automatically added to your library by default before they start
 playing.

I'm not to keen on FrontRow, iTunes, or QuickTime to play movies, and
 use VLC instead.

 Just my 2 cents.

Mp4 audio nightmare

Does anybody know of a simple way around this, or will I have to fish

downstairs to the router and plugging it in to see if it works ok wired. Any
other suggestions? I'm running the lastest iteration of Snow Leopard. I've
tried Safe Boot without success.

Re: Installing without a DVD drive

2009-12-27 Thread Jonathan Rowson
Hold 'T' while booting to enter Target mode. If I remember this only
works with Macs with native FW 400/800 ports.

Insert the installer disk into your iMac, and reboot, installing the

 Problem solved.

The MacBook owner deleted a bunch of stuff based on its dates and
 times
and thereafter booted to a flashing folder with a ?. When I got it
from her and turned it on, the optical drive made a terrible screechy
noise. I took a loose scrap of plastic out of its innards and the
 next
time I booted, no ugly noise. Good!

Thinking an OS reinstall was called for, I put in the Install disc
 and
away we went. During the checking your disc phase (around 13%),
something happened and a can't check your disc error appeared. I
clicked Ignore and continue and it began to install but failed
 along
the way. Now when it tries to start, it begins to boot but then
 panics
 and says to restart.

So I started my iMac in Firewire mode with the install disc in the
SuperDrive, started the MacBook holding down Option, and found that I
was offered the option of the fratzed internal HD or the HD on my
 iMac.
I'd hoped that the iMac's SuperDrive would be included in the choices
but no such luck. (I guess it isn't booted enough to know that my
 Prefs
says to share the drive.) So I boot from my iMac HD. No problem.
 Things
are fine - wonderful! - EXCEPT no sign of my iMac's optical drive.
 GRRR!

So I reboot the iMac normally. I make .dmg's of the 2 Install discs,
figuring I'll at least be able to access those on my HD. Back to
Firewire boot, start the MacBook via my iMac HD, navigate to
 the .dmg's,
run the Installer, and ... oh, yeah ... it makes me restart the
 MacBook.
This, of course, is worthless. DOH!

So now I'm looking at the instructions at:

 http://www.maciverse.com/install-os-x-snow-leopard-from-usb-flash-drive.html

even though I don't have a suitable USB drive!

Can anyone tell me a better option? How do you install the OS
 without a
DVD drive? Will I have to go into the Apple Store and have them fix
 it?

 I _do_ have a Firewire-equipped enclosure into which I could put a
 HD.

Thanks for reading and thanks for any assistance offered.

Re: Snow Leopard won't play with my printer...

2009-09-14 Thread Jonathan Rowson
I've done this successfully at home quite well. I've got an Airport Extreme
(not the dual band one) with 3 Airport Express base stations (got them NEW
from eBay for about $45 bucks each)
I've got 2 of them acting as a bridge for my DIrecTV HDDVR units. DirecTV
will allow you free on-demand programming IF you have either wireless or
wired networking. Well, they will either sell you a kit or allow you to use
a compatible router (essentially one with a free Ethernet port). In comes
the AE (I just like the form factor and the price was right) and problem
solved. Plus, it also has the dual function of extending my Aiport Extreme
signal through our house (2 story home)

Just use another AirPort Express to extend your network. The Ethernet
port on the AE can serve as a WAN or LAN port. In this case you'd be
using the second AE's port as a LAN port when you connect the Cat 5
cable from it to your printer.

Re: Snow Leopard from Tiger...?

2009-09-07 Thread Jonathan Rowson
Why would you categorize it as a ripoff? It's a ripoff if the product being
sold is totally overpriced for what you get, NOT if it's not what you want.
Remember, value for money is the key. Don't forget that the Boxed Set is NOT
a requirement for upgrading. The Boxed Set is ONLY if you NEED iLife, iWork
AND Leopard.

The box set is a ripoff because it contains software that I DON'T
want; I should not be required to buy unwanted applications just to
upgrade my operating system. Apple is the new Microsoft.

Re: iMac upgrades

2009-08-27 Thread Jonathan

I used to have an old iMac DV 400 and missed OS 9 when I went to 10.x.
I would suggest staying with 9.2 unless there are specific things that
will only run on OS X. That being said, very few things run on 9
anymore, but LOTS of kids proggies, esp older ones, run like a champ
on OS 9.x It was nice to have OS 10.x, but I went back to 9 whenever I
could for the added speed and snappier response in the older machine.

On Aug 26, 2:53 pm, Cyrus Griffin callmemrp...@gmail.com wrote:
 1. 10.4 runs surprisingly well on older Macs, but I would suggest 10.2
if you want to run OSX. That was Apple's first really stable X. It
really all depends on what you want to do on it. If you want to have
the features of later OSX's, then you might go with that. If you still
just want to run all the games that came with it, I would say that
9.2.2 is the best classic OS, since it was the latest version.
 2. Yes, you can just copy them over. Unlike Windows, Mac Apps are
completely independent of the OS. (For the most part, there are
exceptions, and there might be some plugins that you'd need to copy,
 too.)
 3. I'm not sure about that, I believe you only have to install OSX on
the first 8Gb of the HD on the old beige G3's, and the Bondi. Perhaps
someone else would know for sure.
 4. That's a problem... You could get a DVD drive for it, but it would
probably be a slot-loading. That's how I got OSX onto my Bondi, but I
just put back the tray-loader after I installed it. They did release
10.4 on CD's, you might be able to find them on eBay. If you decide to
go with 10.2, that was only released on CD, so you're good to go.
