STUDY MORE BUT IN THE WILD AS IN CAPTIVITY ITS NOT A NATURAL ENVIRONMENT. 3. YOU MUST KNOW THE FLORAL MORPHOLOGY OF HABENARIA AND PRESENT IT IN THE ARTICLE SO AS TO UNDERSTAND WHERE EXACTLY STIGMA IS LOCATED. I WOULD SAY LOWER INNER PART OF STIGMA WOULD NOT BE A GOOD PLACE FOR THE POLLENS TO GET STICK TO. HABENARIA HAVE LONG STIGMATIC LOBES AND THE MOST FRONTAL PART OF MOST STICKY. 4. ITS VERY INTERESTING THAT BOTH MOTH AND BUTTERFLY VISIT THE FLOWER WHICH NEEDS MORE DETAILED STUDY INCLUDING MALE POLLINATION SUCCESS, FEMALE POLLINATION SUCCESS, FRUITING SUCCESS ETC. WRITE A NEW MANUSCRIPT BASED ON ALL THESE AND I AM SURE IT WILL GO INTO VERY HIGH PROFILE JOURNAL. 5. IF YOU HAVE ACCESS TO GC-MS THEN TRY TO ANALYSE THE FRAGRANCE AND THEN ASK SOME ENTOMOLOGIST TO CHECK THE INSECT AS WHAT THEY GET ATTRACTED TO. Trust me, putting all these together can get your article into journals like The New Phytologist. Please feel free to ask if you need any help. I can design your method if you wish to follow and I dont need any authorship for that. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND you to spend one more year and publish a better article. Re: [efloraofindia:191670] Fwd: Well written piece on tree planting
In a nutshell simple answer for tree planting species is Plant a fruit tree that gives you fruit in few years time. By this way person always chooses the plant that fruits in that area. In Mainpuri district of UP I saw Kathal and Mulberry trees on both side of a canal. Some Engineer planted those trees and today Villagers of that area dont buy KATHAL and every plant is very well safe. Mulberry are very good trees for shade Fruit and birds. Everyone does it. Schools do it. MNCs do it. Widows and mourning relatives do it. Even Nitin Gadkari does it. Last week, the Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced http://www.thehindu.com/sci-tech/energy-and-environment/200-cr-trees-to-be-planted-along-highways-gadkari/article6111239.ece?utm_source=RSS_Feedutm_medium=RSSutm_campaign=RSS_Syndication that he had plans to plant 200 crore trees along 1 lakh km of National Highway.Indians frequently combine this anodyne pursuit with another one – record breaking. In 2012, 9,814 volunteers planted 99,103 saplings http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/home/environment/flora-fauna/New-world-record-for-planting-trees-in-Leh/articleshow/17040038.cms of Ladakhi willow in an hour, breaking the previous record (66,000 done on the occasion of a tycoon’s birthday in Philippines http://punto.com.ph/News/Article/14858/Volume-6-No-20/Headlines/Investments-for-future-generations-66-000-trees-on-MVP%C2%92s-66th-birthday, in case you wondered). We also hold the Guinness Book record for the most number of trees planted in a day by a team http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/records-1/most-trees-planted-in-24-hours-(team)/, but Pakistan has the one for the most number of trees planted by an individual in a day http://www.treehugger.com/culture/pakistani-soldier-plants-20101-trees-in-one-day-sets-new-world-record.html. Noble intentions and tree planting always seem to go together. Sadly, you might want to stop doing it. Experts will tell you that if you really do love the environment, you should take a step back before you lower that next sapling into the ground. TheNational Forest Policy http://envfor.nic.in/sites/default/files/introduction-nfp.pdf (1988) aims to have at least one-third of the country’s total land area under forest or tree cover, but planting trees without careful consideration can in fact do more harm than good. Time for some introspection (or intreespection, as you will). *What tree am I planting?* The aforementioned Ladakhi willow proved a sensible choice http://www.thehindubusinessline.in/bline/2010/10/11/stories/2010101151660300.htm in that particular instance – the roots of these willows bind the soil and prevent erosion. But if the green baby you are inserting into the ground is not native to your region, there’s every possibility they will catch diseases and be zapped by the weather in a way that native trees won’t. They may also require more water and other resources for their maintenance than a city may not be able to afford. Non-native trees can also be harmful to native flora – eucalyptus, which is widely planted in India, strips the soil of moisture and nutrients and renders the soil in the area infertile. They can also be eye-poppingly expensive, costing huge amounts of public money. The government of Punjab, for instance, has been on a spree to plant date palms in the last few years; Amritsar has date palms lining the road from the city to the airport.

Re: [efloraofindia:191652] DSLR vs Mirrorless cameras
Sorry, I missed this email before. Mirrorless cameras are new thing in the market. Many people are not happy with the thought that they are going to loose the competition to a person who can carry all his equipments with mirrorless camera in his vest pocket from macro to 600 mm lens. First Professional who is using it is John Issac a retired UN Photographer. He is using Olympus and getting good results. My another American Friend Mr Dan Lafel is using mirror less camera and he likes it. There is no harm in switching over to these new mirrorless cameras. satyendra On 21 June 2014 19:53, J.M. All of us on this forum are using cameras, preferably DSLR to have good results of close up, some using point and shoot or other compact digital cameras. I have two DSLR Canon 550d and Sony alpha 100, one Panasonic Lumix, and now my Sony Z1 mobile with 20 mp camera. I did not carry these to USA trip for 5 months as my son here has a good Sony alpha 700. The latter developed problem when we were visiting University of California Botanical Garden, and not able to get it repaired we thought of buying a new one and almost short-listed Nikon 3200 (with 24 mp), a good recent DSLR when I read one listing on Amazon with a person having bought it one month ago wanted to sell it because he wanted to shift to mirrorless camera. I request members to share their experience and expertise to help others in deciding between the two types of cameras, especially when we want good photographs of flowers. Here is a website which compares the two. http://photographylife.com/mirrorless-vs-dslr http://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fphotographylife.com%2Fmirrorless-vs-dslrh=9AQHKlgpTenc=AZOCB36QLv4eH5c-fTlWR0V-_cz5qh1DaiFkhEotcwH1_Zjh6sj8Tndo8RIq1yS9xHUB-T4pESQ7R0ynGvywrUwIQFC6b17pTHs5acL2S6mbuxVSlBOwnL9fnXgcvhD4TifCdMrE-utzm3b_dbI3vtaEjD7TtX9HUNnn-3WHErDNYQs=1 Dr. Gurcharan Singh Retired Associate Professor SGTB Khalsa College, University of Delhi, Delhi-110007 Res: 932 Anand Kunj, Vikas Puri, New Delhi-110018. Dear All, I have no idea of the plant but long back means in late 80's I also photographed tribals in mandla - Balaghat district of M.P. cutting some sort of Potato and drying those chips on rocks. I have to find that picture agaian and post it here. Regards. satyendra On 12 January 2014 22:29, Tapas Chakrabarty tchak...@gmail.com wrote: Dear Sir, Thanks for your mail. So many be once plant this climber grows so luxuriantly that it gives good shade (darkness) in the area, so may be thats why its called god of darkness. People tend to give names on their own so its not a big deal. Problem arises when such names get on the references and are then being used scientifically and then later such names create confusion. One such bad example of giving Hindi names to plants is the book on Orchids of Northern Western Ghats. For example, they call Vanda tessellata as RAKSHAS !!!; of course the name of VAMAN AMRI is derived from Dendrobium nanum!! and there are many such examples. I am not big fan of chinese plant nomenclature but you will be surprised to know that they have unique names for all chinese plants. If you know the chinese names then actually you can find out the latin name thats really amazing Thanks again Usha mam for the detailed you have put up. So I felt like writing about it. There are many ways to look at it, but ultimately it is not a happy moment in anycase. Orchid seed germination is strictly dependent on fungal association, so growing on Acacia means it was able to find a fungi (mycorrhiza) that was able to grow on Acacia which is native to Australia. Question is, did the orchids adapt to a new environment or the fungi? Many times we walk in the forests and even if we are very much careful and we dont wish to disturb the natural environment, we do throw things like fruits and vegetables (left overs from our food) saying that it is biodegradable. But can you imagine, an apple doesnt grow in the western ghats, then how does the apple get decomposed there by a fungi or bacteria? Microorganisms are everywhere, they just need a host to propagate. An apple decomposing fungi or bacteria cant propagate if there is no apple and hence no apple tree in the area is a kind of a biocontrol for that fungi or bacteria etc. But its human who alters the environment every where. Even by throwing a bio degradable apple on the floor in a non apple area, we are kind of adding very minor doses of poison to the environment there and its not good for natural habitat. Ever thought, how a pig virus that was supposed to infect only pigs could infect human being causing swine flu? Its not the adaptation of human but the microorganisms. Just somethings to ponder about!! and we must not encourage exotics to take over natural vegetation in India. Few days back I was attending one seminar by a guy from China. Very well said points. Many national parks are suffering from grazing ban, Bharatpur is one. It is really Ugly. Hope forest deptt sees it. Satyendra On 19 October 2012 14:16, shrikant ingalhalikar le...@rediffmail.comwrote: Sorry, I have not been able to post any reply in Rajeshji's thread on this subject. Excuse me for starting a new topic. I feel that the ropeway will be a blessing in many ways and a disadvatage in some ways. 1. I have travelled in a similar ropeway at Auli and at many places outside India. They take you over canopies of forests which otherwise are never accessible. Some places even have canopy walkways to look at trees and birds. Rich forest at Genting Highland in Thailand beautufully stands in glory below the ropes. No doubt eating shacks and mule owners may lose their earning but anyway they mostly come up from plains. They will find an alternative soon. 2. Area surrounding walkway is more than filthy. All blame goes to people and eating shacks. This will improve to the benefit of plant explorers. A garbage dump from top in a valley will soon compete with surrounding mountains. Ropeway can prevent entry of non degradable waste. 3. The pylons for ropeway need very little space and this will in no way harm the flora. 4. Entrance to ropeway can stipulate strict action for plucking. In fact there can be better control on Brahmakamal with the ropeway. As such we must decry the aura around Brahmakamal. It is no way connected with celebrated Kamal, only the outer bracts have a resemblance and the dull inner flowers are toxic to inhale and can even cause fainting at that altitude. These plants are surviving inspite of a local ritual when thousands of inflorescences are plucked and worn as a crown in a festival. Plucking a flower (surely not justified) does not destroy the plant. 5. The mules graze on invasive plants such as polygonum and impatiens and several others. This keeps invasive plants under control. Their dung flows down with frequent rain and thus the walkway remains clean. The plants get the nutrients from the mule-dung. If due to ropeway the mules are totally stopped Hemkund flora will surely suffer due to proliferation of invasive plants. VOF has a ban on grazing. Since my first visit to VOF in 1997 the invasive plants have spread by 2 kms into the valley beyond the entrance footbridge. 6. Due to suuden gain of altitude of 5000 feet from G. dham the altitude sickness at 14200 ft can become more hazardous. Pls permit me to post an ugly picture of Kas with flowers prisoned behind a fence. The debacle of 2012 season is only due to enormous hue and cry created by environmentalists and botanists (exagerated news) on how Kas flora suffered due to tourism. Here the medicine has proved to fatal than the decease itself. Now no one is allowed to go near flowers for preventing plucking or trampling. Recently it was announced that except researchers no one should visit Kas which I find absurd. My comments might bring in wrath of some members but this is my opinion after a long careful study. I hope we evaluate this subject more carefully. With regards, -- -- Satyendra K.Tiwari. Wildlife Photographer, Naturalist, Tour Leader H.NO http://h.no/ 129, P.O.Tala, Distt Umariya. M.P. Dear Ushadi, Infact that's the right way to photograph on Macro mode. If all the pictures are taken in field then pl see the flower close up. Background is completely blank. In small objects to bring out the details this is the best method. On 400 ISO with 200 shutter speed photograph taken with the use of flash on F 32. F 32 providing very good depth of field so most of the picture is in sharp focus. most of the pictures published in Macro Photography teaching books are taken with the help of Tripod to get the maximum depth of field. Re: [efloraofindia:76317] project to rid of mosquitoes with a plant and animal based design system
we had similar experience with white browed fantail bird. she use to sit near the exit pipe and catch each and every mosquito. bulbul and sparrows followed her later and now they r always there. small fishes are best to reduce the larva from any pond. On 7 August 2011 21:30, J.M. Garg jmga...@gmail.com wrote: Forwarding again for any assistance in the matter please. Some earlier relevant feedback: “This is not pertaining to plants or botany, but, I made an accidental discovery last year. The red weaving ants are good predators of mosquitoes provided, the entry or exit point from the breeding area is narrow. I observed that the ants had covered all the exit points from the vent pipe of my septic tank and no sooner a mosquito tried to either enter the vent hole or exit, it was caught by alert ants and promptly dismembered. I stood on the spot for 30 minutes and hardly a couple of them escaped the clutches. Regards. We got a lot of our ideas from this article: http://permaculturetokyo.blogspot.com/2009/07/natures-mosquito-control.html - which involves a design system involving plants and animals. We had the following questions: 1. What is the Citronella macronata tree? The article mentions this is a tree that can be planted as a hedge. Is it found in India? 2. The citronella compound has also been bred into the “lemon geranium” which exudes the same scent (as Citronella Macronata) and is used to repel mosquitoes at the herb layer. Is “lemon geranium” the same as Citronella grass? 3. Is 'catnip' native? Where can we find it? Catnip extract (and so is Rosemary extract) is a good mosquito repellent. 4. Bullrush and Cattail attract dragonfly that eat mosquitoes - what are these and where can I find them? 5. The Chinese have been using Artemisia annua (a.k.a. sweet wormwood) to cure fevers for centuries. Is this available? And if someone can help with this: Are there places around Pune where one could get mass quantities (and cheap) of lemon grass, citronella (grass) and vetiver for planting? Re: [efloraofindia:63988] Camera Query: How to select?
Dear Gurucharan ji and all, I dont remember the model no but one of the Lumix Panasonic shoots in Raw also. These small cameras are very good for this kind of work and even for Landscape for some reason. One of my photographer friend who has written two guide books on Madagaskar and two on Borneo always uses wide angle lens for photographing insects and flowers. I am finding it very useful too so please try wide angle lens too for small objects. I will post few pictures soon. Thanks. Before selecting, the foremost thing is to decide your budget. You may be lured by better cameras once you started knowing about them hence you will have to limit yourself with the budget, i.e., stop looking at anything beyond your budget. You may at times feel like, ok if I add few more thousands to my budget then after 2-3 months I will buy another and better camera!!. But remember, companies keep on releasing new models throughout the year and hence better models keep coming. After 3 months you may realise that there is still a better option which you have to wait for another few months and this goes on.so STOP AND LOOK AT WHAT YOU HAVE AVAILABLE AT THE SHOPS, unless you are planning to go for a very high end camera. One more thing you should remember that buying during festive seasons may give you lot of discounts and other accessory offers. For people living outside India, especially in Europe or USA, the best time to get many offers are during Christmas sale. You really get some extraordinarily cheap rates. Once you have fixed your budget, its time for setting up your priorities: 1. Sensor Size (Bigger the sensor size, better better should be the result. Sensor can usually be of two types, CMOS or CCD. There is no clearcut distinction about which is better, but CMOS use less power, are faster and comparatively cheaper than CCD). 2. Megapixel (at optimum size, 10 megapixel is good enough, you may think of 12 megapixel too, but always remember, that you need an external storage device for all your pictures and a bigger flash card too. Most of us are not planning to get a door size printouts of our pictures, hence limiting yourself to 12 megapixel is a good idea). 3. Body Size (some cameras are heavy and in field at times you really find it to be too heavy and curse yourself for carrying it especially on long or high altitude treks.) 4. Modes: Look out for the MANUAL mode. Any camera with MANUAL mode gives you more option to create your own modes for taking shots. If you are looking for closeup shots then look for availability of MACRO mode and also look for the minimum closeup distance of the lens. Its usually written on the lens or the camera body. Also look for the placement of FLASH on the camera at the minimum closeup distance. Because if you want to use flash on macro mode then it castes a shadow of the hood on the subject. Ability to use flash in macro is always a good option. In compact cameras and prosumers, if you have a camera with lens which doesnt pop out then its always good. This technology is called INTERNAL FOCUSING (IF) and its written on the lens or body for DSLRs. For compact cameras, this is a good option as it doesnot caste shadow of the hood on the subject. 5. Attachment options: Some lower end camera also comes with accessory lens (attaching other wideangle or telezoom lens) and extra flash
