RE: [info-tech] Microsoft $$ [Spam score:8%]

2010-04-27 Thread Bruce Ludwig
Good Morning:

I am asking thoughts from our aea and aea8 tech groups.

Would like to know your feelings on switching from a computer lab to mobile
labs in a K-5 setting. I really have mixed feelings and wanted to get more
ideas from the group. We currently have a lab of 24 desktops, we would take
and put 3 in each section 3-5 in their classroom from the computer lab. Our
lab would be a lab of 24 minis on a cart. Thanks for the feedback. Have a
great day.

Much safer to put laptops in the lower grades. We do it. Laptop carts in
the High school hardly last a year before keys are pulled off or they
are destroyed by one or more messed up kid(s). Sad statement isn't it.

[info-tech] Microsoft question

2010-04-27 Thread JON HUESER
Ok,
How wordy is everyone getting on the Microsoft application. The cost side is
easy but not sure about the wording. Anyone that has one done and approved and
can share their example would be great. I am not sure how specific I should be
with it and I bet many of you are in the same situation as me.

Thanks!

RE: [info-tech] Mini Computer Lab

2010-04-27 Thread McKenney, Kurt
My experience with the mobile labs is that they are popular, and kids
especially love to destroy them.

All attempts at accountability tend to be lost causes, and because the
parts are harder to replace than on desktops, they wind up becoming just
so much ballast after time.

There is also the issue of laptops, in addition to costing more than
equivalent desktops, are generally good for less time. I believe that a
laptop is engineered for 3 years while a desktop is engineered for 5,
and by converting the desktop into a dumb terminal, it can be extended
out indefinitely.

On the plus side, the minis are good for the elementary, especially the
younger kids as it is less likely to cause carpal tunnel over time due
to the size appropriate scale.

[info-tech] IPad / ITouch programs for School Administration...

2010-04-27 Thread McKenney, Kurt
Since God has a sense of humor, I am now responsible for an iPad (on
order will be here any day) and an iTouch (can't actually touch it
because the principal has it at home.

I have been asked to find apps for the elementary principal, and likely
the High School, and Middle School principals, and the Superintendent to
make these paperweights into productive devices.

Ok, let's be honest, we are not going to log into the domain. We are not
going to print no matter how much they demand the ability to do so. But
is anyone using the Ipad or Itouch, and if so what apps work for you?

The eWalk software that the AEA has licenses for works well on the

software is for collecting classroom observational data. The eWalk

re: [info-tech] Mini Computer Lab

2010-04-27 Thread Keith Stoeber
We have been using a portable lab K-5 for the last 5 years. It really
works well as we have someone responsible for the lab and makes sure that
they are taken care of. We also have portable labs that have been
dismantled due to lack of supervision. As for the computers in the room,
that depends on the teachers. I found very few used them other than when
they did centers, so they just sat in the room. We ended up pulling all of
them out and now use just the portable lab. If you have any questions let
me know.

Subject: [info-tech] Mini Computer Lab

Sorry for all the other information. Meant to take the other stuff from
the Sioux City School out.

Here it is again.

Good Morning:

I am asking thoughts from our aea and aea8 tech groups.

Would like to know your feelings on switching from a computer lab to mobile
labs in a K-5 setting. I really have mixed feelings and wanted to get more
ideas from the group. We currently have a lab of 24 desktops, we would
take and put 3 in each section 3-5 in their classroom from the computer
lab. Our lab would be a lab of 24 minis on a cart. Thanks for the
feedback. Have a great day.
