[info-tech] Microsoft software

Happy Monday! Quick question for the app -- how specific have you been
in the budget narrative regarding software? Have you listed every
piece of software you plan on purchasing . . . or some of the main
ones and a other as deemed necessary?

2010-04-27 Thread Bruce Ludwig
Good Morning:

I am asking thoughts from our aea and aea8 tech groups.

Would like to know your feelings on switching from a computer lab to mobile
labs in a K-5 setting. I really have mixed feelings and wanted to get more
ideas from the group. We currently have a lab of 24 desktops, we would take
and put 3 in each section 3-5 in their classroom from the computer lab. Our
lab would be a lab of 24 minis on a cart. Thanks for the feedback. Have a
great day.

Ok,
How wordy is everyone getting on the Microsoft application. The cost side is
easy but not sure about the wording. Anyone that has one done and approved and
can share their example would be great. I am not sure how specific I should be
with it and I bet many of you are in the same situation as me.

2010-04-23 Thread Jackie Fonley

working on our application this afternoon . . .

if we do in house PD -- and pay for the person doing that using in
kind money -- was I right in that you then free up money in the

[info-tech] Microsoft Map Point

2010-04-22 Thread Jackie Fonley
Our transportation director purchased a program . . . and asked me to
purchase Microsoft Maps 2010 - because the needs that piece to make it
work. After spending time with Google this afternoon . . . I have
determined that this Microsoft Map Point is the software I am looking
for. I am just looking for information from anyone else using
it . . . and if I even have tracked down the right thing.

Thanks ~ hope you all get to enjoy the weather after work today!

That is a question you should probably discuss with your superintendent.
They are our initial intended audience as they are responsible for approving
purchases. They do need the awareness for the ins and outs of the legal
agreements from which we have access to the monies in the first place.

2009-03-23 Thread A.Bloomquist
I received a phone call this afternoon from a DeElla with the
Microsoft Settlement to say that I would be receiving a report on our
License purchases.

She informed me that the Mac software licenses we purchased are not
eligible.

I wrote an email to John O'Connell and his reply said that he is not
involved in this part of the settlement but he said I known a number
of people who have received vouchers for Mac purchases.

Have any of your heard from Microsoft and do you know anything about
the Apple - Mac licenses not being eligible?

Wanted to check with any of you about this.

I do plan to call the Rust group handling this first thing tomorrow,
Tuesday, and hope to get a better answer.

Ann et all,

From the documentation on the original settlement agreement, Office for

So no new news there.

[info-tech] Microsoft Settlement CY Pres Update

2009-02-04 Thread Scott Fosseen
TO: AEA Media Directors

FROM: John O'Connell

DATE: January 27, 2009

RE: Microsoft Settlement Cy Pres Update

This memo is to provide you with a brief update regarding both the Volume
License notification letters and the Cy Pres program.

VOLUME LICENSE
The Volume Licenses program was open to anyone who purchased Microsoft
Software during the prescribed period covered by the settlement. The date
of the final settlement was August 31, 2007. District had to file their
claims before December 14, 2007.

During a recent conference call, I was informed that Rust Consulting has
sent over 800 of the nearly 1200 volume licenses notification letters to
various governmental agencies. This group includes school districts and
AEAs. The remainder of the letters should be mailed by February 1, 2009.
Members of this group will receive Volume Licensee Vouchers which can be
used for reimbursement on purchases made after April 25, 2007 of any brand
of qualifying computer hardware or software. You can redeem your Volume
Licensee Vouchers for all or part of the price you paid for any purchases of
the following computer products: Any desktop, laptop, or tablet computers
made by any manufacturer for any operating system platform, or any of the
following devices: printers, scanners, monitors, keyboards, or pointing
devices (e.g. mouse, trackball). Qualifying software includes any non-custom
software offered by any software vendor for use on a desktop, laptop or
tablet computer. The qualifying computer hardware or software does not have
to be a Microsoft product. Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) or other
handheld devices, many peripheral (cables, speakers, or other external
device, etc.) and components (internal or external storage units, internal
or external CD-Rom/DVD or other read/write devices, zip drives, tape backup
or storage units, memory, video, or audio cards, motherboards, or CPUs,
etc.) are excluded from the products to which Volume Licensee Vouchers may
be applied. Class members whose total claim is $950 or more must purchase a
computer in order to use Volume Licensee Vouchers for printers, scanners,
monitors, keyboards and pointing devices. More than one Volume Licensee
Voucher can be used for a single purchase. See product Eligibility list for
a more complete list of products. If you have any questions, CALL
1-877-477-0960 OR VISIT www.iowaschoolmicrosoftsettlement.com for more
information.

If the district/agency accepts the notification letter amount of the
reimbursement, they sign the letter and return it. If you do not accept the
letter's amount, the district/agency has 60 days to file additional
information to Rust. This additional information will be reviewed Rust and
a second letter will be sent. The district /agency will have 30 days to
file additional information if they disagree with the second letter.
Estimated final date for the conclusion of the program is July 1, 2009.
This is a tentative date.

CY PRES program Update

According to the settlement, this program is open to qualifying K-12 public
schools in Iowa. A complete list of eligible school buildings is available
on the Department's web site. Once the volume license program has
concluded, the final amount of money available under the Cy Pres program
will be known. As mentioned above the tentative date is currently July 1,
2009.

The application for this program will be available on the secure Department's
website (www.edinfo.state.ia.us) from April 15 to May 15, 2009. School
districts must file for eligible building. A draft of the application will
be available on the Department's web site by March 1, 2009. The list of
eligible software and hardware is posted on the settlement's web site
(www.iowaschoolmicrosoftsettlement.com). If you have any questions regarding
the eligible product list, CALL 1-877-477-0960 OR VISIT the above site for
more information. One problem with the list is that sometimes specific
products are mentioned e.g. HP 6320 Notebook PC, while later in the list
Laptop computers are mentioned below that New Laptop, then New Laptop
computers. In reality any laptop is likely eligible. If in doubt, call or
write and ask the claims administrator. If you are wrong and the claims
administrator rejects your claim for an ineligible product the
district/agency is stuck with the bill.

Districts and AEAs are encouraged to cooperate in designing the applications
and purchases to take advantage of volume purchasing and professional
development activities done under this program linking it to implementation
of a focus area of he Iowa Core Curriculum.

If districts do not ask for an extension of either 180 or 360 days, their
application will be held until a budget can be submitted once the amount of
funding is known which is currently projected to be July 1, 2009. If a
district does ask for an extension and they are ready to apply before the
end of

Just got our letter form the attorneys for the Microsoft Case. They say we have
zero licenses for the time period. I see things differently.

Perhaps the company we bought the licenses through never reported them.
Perhaps, not.

[info-tech] Microsoft Software Inventory Analyzer

2008-08-22 Thread Scott Fosseen
I just ran across this tool while doing some research for a school district
Microsoft Software Inventory Analyzer
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/sam/msia.mspx

It will support a network scan of up to 250 workstation, but only looks for
installed Microsoft applications. I did download and run a scan on my local
machine and it worked really fast. If the network scan runs the same it may
be worth a try on your network to verify your Microsoft License counts.

[info-tech] Microsoft Student Select suggestions

2006-05-04 Thread Harriet Adams

Hi,

Here are some suggestions/recommendations for the
Microsoft Student Select opportunity.

Ifone person is going to
be in chage of the entire district, you should just use the one code -
probably the High School code - and printall of the formsfrom one
building's account as the printouts are not tied to a building. A
POSSIBLE SUGGESTION:

Doing this per building (and
therefore having a different person at each building in charge of the
codes). You would then be able to train someone at each
building (like the building secretary) and they can handle the questions from
that school.

  If a
parent calls four weeks from now saying they want to order, but lost the
sheet, doesthe technology coordinatorwant to handle those requests
or delegate them to the buildingcontact?
  This
is not a one shot offer. Doesthe technology coordinatorwant to do
it again when Office 2007 comes out or dotheywant to delegate
  thatto thebuilding secretary?

Does anyone know where Iowa stands in the law suit against Microsoft?

This is the latest on the IA Attorney General's site.

I have a call in to their Public Information Officer to ask just that question:
where is IA in all this?

Re: Microsoft

The IA Attorney General's Public Information Officer was a bit foggy on the
details, and would check more for us, but not a lot. He recalled that IA won a
lawsuit, but there was no agreement for recompense, it was only for
non-competitive action(s). It
was pretty much dead.

He offered to get somebody to call MN to ask, but figured this must be a
separate action of Minnesota's; originally MN was in on the anti-trust thing
with IA.

He referred me on to this lady, who supposedly has a class action lawsuit
against MS.

They're to call with more info. I'm pursuing this because I just got a quote
from SHI on what it would take to deploy Microsoft in a bigger way. Ouch!

[info-tech] Microsoft Exchange Tools...

2005-02-07 Thread Pearson, Jeremy

Good afternoon-

I was curious for those people using
Microsoft Exchange if they had any neat tools for monitoring and management of
your Exchange server. Looking for anything, hopefully to tell me about my
resource utilization, top users, top hosts, normal things that are useful in
using. Would appreciate any information if you are using something and it
is working well for you. Haven't begun looking, so I thought I would ask
before I re-invent the search for a good tool.

Thanks for any information.

Jeremy
